Abstract:With the increase of both magnitude and frequency of hydrological extreme events such as drought and flooding, the significance of adequately modeling hydrological extreme events is fully recognized. Estimation of extreme rainfall/flood for various return periods is of prime importance for hydrological design or risk assessment. However, due to knowledge and data limitation, uncertainty involved in extrapolating beyond available data is huge. In this paper, different sources of uncertainty in statistical modeling of extreme hydrological events are studied in a systematic way. This is done by focusing on several key uncertainty sources using three different case studies. The chosen case studies highlight a number of projects where there have been questions regarding the uncertainty in extreme rainfall/flood estimation. The results show that the uncertainty originated from the methodology is the largest and could be >40% for a return period of 200 years, while the uncertainty caused by ignoring the dependence among multiple hydrological variables seems the smallest. In the end, it is highly recommended that uncertainty in modeling extreme hydrological events be fully recognized and incorporated into a formal hydrological extreme analysis.

Abstract:The water retention time in the water distribution network is an important indicator for water quality. The water age fluctuates with the system demand. The residual chlorine concentration varies with the water age. In general, the concentration of residual chlorine is linearly dependent on the water demand. A novel statistical model using monitoring data of residual chlorine to estimate the nodal water age in water distribution networks is put forward in the present paper. A simplified two-step procedure is proposed to solve this statistical model. It is verified by two virtual systems and a practical application to analyze the water distribution system of Hangzhou city, China. The results agree well with that from EPANET. The model provides a low-cost and reliable solution to evaluate the water retention time.

Abstract:Surface hydrologic modeling becomes a problem when insufficient spatial and temporal information is available. It is common to have useful modeling periods of less than 15 years. The purpose of this work is to develop a methodology that allows the selection of meteorological and hydrometric stations that are suitable for modeling when information is scarce in the area. Based on the scarcity of data, a series of statistical tests are proposed to eliminate stations according to a decision-making process. Although the number of stations decreases drastically, the information used is reliable and of adequate quality, ensuring less uncertainty in the surface simulation models. Individual basin modeling can be carried out considering the poor data. The transfer of parameters can be applied through the nesting of basins to have information distributed over an extensive area. Therefore, temporally and spatially extended modeling can be achieved with information that preserves statistical parameters over time. If data management and validation is performed, the modeled watersheds are well represented; if this is not done, only 26% to 50% of the runoff is represented.

Abstract:Entropy theory has been increasingly applied in hydrology in both descriptive and inferential ways. However, little attention has been given to the small-sample condition widespread in hydrological practice, where either hydrological measurements are limited or are even nonexistent. Accordingly, entropy estimated under this condition may incur considerable bias. In this study, small-sample condition is considered and two innovative entropy estimators, the Chao-Shen (CS) estimator and the James-Stein-type shrinkage USS) estimator, are introduced. Simulation tests are conducted with common distributions in hydrology, that lead to the best-performing JSS estimator. Then, multi-scale moving entropy-based hydrological analyses (MM-EHA) are applied to indicate the changing patterns of uncertainty of stream flow data collected from the Yangtze River and the Yellow River, China. For further investigation into the intrinsic property of entropy applied in hydrological uncertainty analyses, correlations of entropy and other statistics at different time-scales are also calculated, which show connections between the concept of uncertainty and variability. The about 1 billion people living in monsoonal basins and the 500 million people living in deltas are particularly vulnerable. Flood compensation are probable in $120 billion per year (only from property damage), and drought pose, among others, constraints to the rural poor, highly dependent on rainwater variability for survival.

Abstract:Uncertainty resulting from climatic and environmental changes creates barriers to the accurate acquisition of information about rivers. In this study, a set of stable stochastic differential equations is developed to simulate the dynamic probability distributions of typical hydraulic geometry variables represented by slope, width, depth, and velocity with variations in bankfull discharge over time for a river system. Random parts of the equations are modelled based on single Gaussian white noise and further on combined Gaussian/fractional white noise with Poisson noise. Consistent estimates of the equation parameters are made using a composite nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method. The proposed models are examined through a Monte Carlo simulation of the lower Yellow River, and the results successfully reveal the potential responses of hydraulic geometries to stochastic disturbance and that average trends largely synchronize with the measured values. Comparisons of the three different models confirm the advantages of fractional jump-diffusion model, and according to further discussion, stream power on the basis of such a model is concluded to serve as the better systematic measure of river dynamics. The proposed stochastic approach is new to the field of fluvial relationships, and its application could help to design and monitor river systems with specified accuracy requirements.

Abstract:Water governing systems are twisted with complex interplays among levels and scales which embody their structures. Typically, the mismatch between human-generated and natural systems produces externalities and inefficiencies reflectable in spatial scales. The largely known problem of fit in water governance is investigated to detect the issues of fit between administrative/institutional scales and the hydrological one in a lake basin. To implement the idea, constraining the level of analysis interlinked to the concentrated levels of administration in spatial scales, the fit of the governing system was analyzed by means of statistical mechanics. Modeling the structure of water demand/supply governing system in a given region through the Curie-Weiss Mean Field approximation, the system cost in relation to its structure and fit was appraised and compared with two other conceptual structures in the Urmia Lake Basin in Iran. The methodology articulated an analysis framework for exploring the effectiveness of the formulated water demand/supply governing system and its fit to the relevant hydrological system. The findings of this study may help developing strategies to encourage adaptations, rescaling/reforms for effective watershed management.

Abstract:The state estimation of water distribution system is systematically summarized, which includes parameter estimation, calibration assessment and data (sample) design. In the past twenty years, many researchers proposed some theory analysis and numerical technologies based on optimization, statistic theory and field experiments. In recent years, uncertainty theory is applied in the calibration assessment of water distribution network and the sample design. The accuracy standard for state estimation of water distribution network in foreign countries is introduced. Although the theory about the state estimation of water distribution network has made a great progress, there is lack of the application researches, and few examples of large scale water distribution system calibration are reported. The focus of state estimation is the application research in the future.

Abstract:In this study, data on water shortage events were collected from customer service systems. An analysis was conducted to establish the relationship between customers’ complaints and the water pressure flow conditions. A mathematical model was developed to estimate the probability of water shortage events based on water head. The Sigmoid function is commonly used as an activation function in neural networks. The function of the model is the same as the Sigmoid function, and its critical parameters correspond to the service head requirements of water facilities. By considering the interaction between human emotions and artificial systems, this study provides novel insights into improving the operational control and construction of water distribution systems.
Development of Strategy for SWAT Hydrologic Modeling in Data-Scarce Regions of Peru

Abstract:In this study, methods were developed to create and evaluate the performance of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) in southern Peru where commonly used input data sources were not available. Soil classes were defined based on regional soil taxonomy and suitability maps combined with soil profiles. Local land cover and remotely sensed satellite data were used to develop a land cover database. Water balance analysis of the reservoir as well as satellite evapotranspiration data were used for model performance assessment. Results showed that these strategies provided reliable predictions of hydrology in this region, with the uncertainty quantified based on the range of inputs. Overall, this semiarid watershed was base flow driven and average annual surface runoff contribution to streamflow was less than 9%. Assessment of water pathways and their uncertainties based on the uncertainty of estimated inputs also showed that 62% of precipitation was removed by evapotranspiration with up to 16% uncertainty. The methods introduced in this study can be applied to other data-scarce watersheds, and findings provide insights on the hydrology of the Peruvian Andes region.

Abstract:For decades, water shortage, flooding, and water deterioration problems have led to a variety of adverse impacts on socioeconomic development and human life.Challenges of water quality and quantity management adhering to the principle of sustainable development have been of significant concerns to many researchers and decision makers [1][2][3][4][5][6].These issues are highly complicated, involving a large number of social, economic, environmental, technical, and political factors, coupled with complex spatial variability and cascading effect [7,8].Climate change and human interference could affect the related management systems at a regional scale and lead to more significant spatial and temporal variations of water quantity and availability as well as the associated environmental and ecological conditions.Such complexities force researchers to develop more robust mathematical methods and tools to analyze the relevant information, simulate the related processes, implement mitigation strategies, assess the potential impacts/risks, and generate sound decision alternatives.Therefore, it is desired that mathematical techniques be developed to aid decision makers in formulating and adopting cost-effective and environment-benign water management plans and policies.The paper "River flow estimation from upstream flow records using support vector machines" by H. Abstract:Water resource modelling plays a crucial role in water resources management, but it involves many inherent uncertainties. This research investigates how epistemic uncertainties affect reservoir water budgets, projecting forward over a 30 year period using Monte Carlo simulation. It encompasses long-term variations in water demand, reservoir volume, precipitation, evaporation and inflow, while also considering siltation processes, reservoir dredging, population growth, reduced water consumption, and the hydrological impacts of climate change. The research focuses on fifty reservoirs in a semi-arid region of Brazil. The findings demonstrate that some reservoirs consistently met their demands with high level reliability, even within a wide range of uncertainty. Conversely, reservoirs with morphohydric indices indicating a tendency toward water scarcity are significantly affected by input variability introduced through uncertainty analysis. An empirical model is proposed to estimate the probability of these reservoirs achieving the reference volume reliability of 90%, while considering the uncertainties of: annual average inflow, reservoir maximum volume and annual demand. Sensitivity analysis reveals that reservoir inflow and demand are the two most influential variables affecting a reservoirs’ ability to meet its demand. For over exploited reservoirs, variations in these variables strongly impact the volume reliability. This research provides a valuable tool for estimating the likelihood of reaching a 90% volume reliability, while taking into account the inherent uncertainties in the modeling process. Additionally, it identifies key variables that have the most influence on the reservoirs’ ability to meet its demand. Notably, this study conducts uncertainty and sensitivity analyses in the context of physical and hydrological reservoir features for a large number of reservoirs, adding novelty to the research field.

Abstract:Statistical prediction is often required in reservoir simulation to quantify production uncertainty or assess potential risks. Most existing uncertainty quantification procedures aim to decompose the input random field to independent random variables, and may suffer from the curse of dimensionality if the correlation scale is small compared to the domain size. In this work, we develop and test a new approach, K-means clustering assisted empirical modeling, for efficiently estimating waterflooding performance for multiple geological realizations. This method performs single-phase flow simulations in a large number of realizations, and uses K-means clustering to select only a few representatives, on which the two-phase flow simulations are implemented. The empirical models are then adopted to describe the relation between the single-phase solutions and the two-phase solutions using these representatives. Finally, the two-phase solutions in all realizations can be predicted using the empirical models readily. The method is applied to both 2D and 3D synthetic models and is shown to perform well in the P10, P50 and P90 of production rates, as well as the probability distributions as illustrated by cumulative density functions. It is able to capture the ensemble statistics of the Monte Carlo simulation results with a large number of realizations, and the computational cost is significantly reduced.

Abstract:We present a novel statistical treatment, the "metastatistics of extreme events", for calculating the frequency of extreme events. This approach, which is of general validity, is the proper statistical framework to address the problem of data with statistical inhomogeneities. By use of artificial sequences, we show that the metastatistics produce the correct predictions while the traditional approach based on the generalized extreme value distribution does not. An application of the metastatistics methodology to the case of extreme event to rainfall daily precipitation is also presented.

Study on the planning methods of sustainable utility of water resource for arid area

Abstract:Based on the sustainable development theory, general principles and methods of planning for continued water resources utilization in arid regions are studied. Guidelines of multiple objective, interaction, dynamics and risks, public acceptability etc. are summarized with special emphasis on the uncertainty of the water resources system and planning itself. An operating method for the integration of interactive multi-objective optimization and dynamic simulation are proposed. Means of sectional static multi-year operation is presented and a water resources decision support system has been developed accordingly. Application of this system to practical cases illustrates the feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:The actuality of the study is caused by the needs of water resources state assessment, which natural supply is insufficient. The article analyzes the quality of surface water and groundwater using processed statistical data and the results of mathematical modeling in the GIS environment. The results showed that the quality of water sources under current anthropogenic load is normal, but subsequent monitoring of the situation is required. There is no significant relationship between the quality of surface water and groundwater.

Abstract:The quality of water ascertains the ‘integrity’ of water for specific purposes. Tests and quality of examination of water can provide sufficient information about the waterway health. If tests are conducted over a span of time period, the water quality changes can be realized. There are several testing parameters like pH value, temperature, salinity, turbidity, phosphates and nitrates, which can help assess the water quality. Also, aquatic macro-invertebrates can give a proper water quality indication. Surface water contaminated can pose a high risk to the entire human population and it remains a challenging task to investigate and resolve the problem for public health authority. Intensification of agricultural activities, change in climatic conditions, coastal area quick urban development, and resultant freshwater source declining have contributed considerably to the surface water contamination risk and the augmentation of waterborne disease incidences. The quality of surface water monitoring needs frequent problem detection to reduce any negative effect on public health. The epidemiology study applies geospatial and remote sensing technologies to distinguish the temporal and spatial environmental variability determinants to assess the epidemiology of certain diseases. By providing an integrated and systematic approach to risky water management for the public health and safety, a proper epidemiology method can be used and proved to be an efficient device to evaluate the quality of surface water and any related health risks. SWRMS- Spatial water resource monitoring system provides important and beneficial information to support water management. Requisite innovative features involve the explicit water redistribution description and use of river water and groundwater systems, to achieve more spatial details like key irrigated area features and wetlands, to improve hydrometer observation accuracy and assimilating the observations. A review of research and operational applications reveals that satellite view can enhance spatial detail and accuracy in estimating hydrological model. Every operating system uses land cover classification, dynamic forcing, and a parameterization priory of vegetation dynamics, which is partially or completely based on remote sensing, while satellite observations are utilized in varying stages for data assimilation and model evaluation. The satellite observation, utility by data assimilation varies as a dominant hydrological function. This review paper identifies the spatial and temporal precipitation products, including the application of a higher remote sensing product range, along with operational challenges while research satellite mission continuity with data services, finding computationally-efficient data assimilation techniques. The entire observations critically relies on the detailed information availability and understanding the remotely-sensed spatial and temporal scaling.

Abstract:The anticipated water scarcity in the first half of this century is one of the international issues of most concern, which needs to be adequately addressed. However, even though the issue has an international impact and worldwide monitoring is critical, there are limited global estimates at present. In this study, annual water availability has been derived from annual runoff estimated by land surface models using total runoff integrating pathways (TRIP) with 0.5° by 0.5° longitude/latitude resolution globally. The global distribution of abstraction was esti- mated for each sector at the same spatial resolution based on country-based statistics of municipal water use, industrial water use, and agricultural intakes, using a global geographical information system with global distribution of population and irrigated crop land area. The total population under water stress estimated for 1995 corresponded very well with earlier estimates. However, the number is highly dependent on how one assumes the volume of water from upstream of a region, which can be considered as "available" water resources within the region. Therefore it is important, even for global scale analysis, to evaluate the regional water quality deterioration and the real consumption of water resources in the upper part of the stream, as well as the accessibility of water. Further studies should be promoted by an integrated approach to improve the accuracy of future projections on both the natural and social aspects of water resources.
