There is a major need for such techniques, since the traditional way of designing mathematical models – based on researchers’ insights – can no longer keep pace with the ever-increasing data flow. To catch up, many application areas have begun relying on data science, i.e., on techniques for extracting models from data, such as data mining, machine learning, and innovative statistics. Abstract:This new edition of Numerical Ecology with R guides readers through an applied exploration of the major methods of multivariate data analysis, as seen through the eyes of three ecologists. It provides a bridge between a textbook of numerical ecology and the implementation of this discipline in the R language. The book begins by examining some exploratory approaches. It proceeds logically with the construction of the key building blocks of most methods, i.e. association measures and matrices, and then submits example data to three families of approaches: clustering, ordination and canonical ordination. The last two chapters make use of these methods to explore important and contemporary issues in ecology: the analysis of spatial structures and of community diversity. The aims of methods thus range from descriptive to explanatory and predictive and encompass a wide variety of approaches that should provide readers with an extensive toolbox that can address a wide palette of questions arising in contemporary multivariate ecological analysis. Abstract:AbstractWe live in a “big” world with “big” information needs and “big” economic data in the form of texts, charts, and numbers. However, although the information set that one may use to analyze a company or to make financial decisions contains both text and numbers, traditionally, theoretical and applied economic research overemphasized the importance of numbers in the decision-making process. In recent years, advances in hardware and software technologies but most importantly the development of advanced text mining and machine learning algorithms has made the efficient utilization of financial text data a reality. In this paper, we review and present several techniques used for financial text analysis and we highlight some potential problems that may arise during the implementation phase of text mining for accounting/financial applications.

Abstract:Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a comprehensive collection of methods for exploring relationships among observed and latent variables, and it has broad applications in various fields such as psychology, sociology, epidemiology, marketing, and business. In their recent book titled Structural Equation Modeling Using R/SAS: A Step-by-Step Approach with Real Data Analysis , Dr. Ding-Geng Chen and Dr. Yiu-Fai Yung provide a nice guide covering many topics on SEM and their applications. This book introduces statistical rationale and fundamental methods for SEM; more importantly, it showcases the methods using many real-world examples and focuses on their implementations with both the R and SAS software. As introduced in this book's preface, the literature has many books on SEMs, but most of them require a high level of mathematical background or depend on software packages that are expensive and not very accessible to researchers who need SEM tools. This book's practical approach with popular and accessible software tools like R and SAS is a significant advantage. With this feature, I think this book provides an excellent tool for a broad spectrum of readers, from beginners to those seeking advanced knowledge in SEM.

Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting

Abstract:Based upon my experience in research, teaching, writing textbooks, and editing handbooks and journals, this review paper discusses how financial econometrics, mathematics, statistics, and financial technology can be used in research and teaching for students majoring in quantitative finance. A major portion of this paper discusses essential content of Lee and Lee (Handbook of financial econometrics, mathematics, statistics, and machine learning, World Scientific, Singapore, 2020). Then Lee (From east to west: memoirs of a finance professor on academia, practice, and policy, World Scientific, Singapore, 2017), Lee et al. (Financial econometrics, mathematics and statistics, Springer, New York, 2019a; Machine learning for predicting default of credit card holders and success of kickstarters. Working paper, 2019b), and Lee and Lee (Handbook of financial econometrics and statistics, Springer, New York, 2015) are used to enhance the content of this paper. In addition, important and relevant papers, which have been published in different journals are also used to support the issues discussed in this paper. I have found the applications of financial econometrics, mathematics, statistics, and technology have improved drastically over the last five decades. Therefore, both practitioners and academicians need to update their skills in this area to compete in both financial market and academic research.

Abstract:This book is a handbook for students of Master's in finance, who want to learn risk management. It corresponds to the lecture notes of my course “Risk Management & Financial Regulation” at the University of Paris Saclay. This title highlights the role of financial regulation. Indeed, it appears that financial regulation is an important component to understand the practice of risk management in finance. This is particularly true in the banking sector, but it is also valid in other financial sectors. At first sight, it may be curious to teach for example the standards developed by the Basel Committee. They are freely available and any student may consult them. However, the regulation is so complex and the documentation produced is so abundant that students (but also professionals) may be lost when they want to have an overview on a specific topic or seek particular information. Therefore, I consider that the primary role of a course in risk management is to understand in general terms the financial regulation and be able to navigate between the various regulatory standards.

Abstract:Semiparametric Regression with R by Harezlak, Ruppert, and Wand is a truly heroic book! To many of us, statistics can be roughly dichotomized into parametric and nonparametric. Semiparametric statistics aim to bring together the best of these two worlds by modeling the components of scientific interest parametrically for the ease of interpretation and the "nuisance" components nonparametrically to avoid unnecessary model misspecification. Yet its adoption into applied data analysis has been slower than expected compared to some other areas (e.g., high-dimensional linear models or machine learning). This could be attributed to the lack of an easy-to-follow textbook on this topic. Fortunately, HRW fill this huge void, a much overdue for practitioners awaiting guidance from the experts. A related book with more emphasis on the theoretical aspects can be found in Ruppert et al. ( 2003 ).

Abstract:R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics, which provides a wide variety of statistical tools (modeling, statistical testing, time series analysis, classification problems, machine learning, ...), together with amazing graphical techniques and the great advantage that it is highly extensible. Nowadays, there is no doubt that it is the software par excellence in statistical courses for any level, for theoretical and applied subjects alike. Besides, it has become an almost essential tool for every research work that involves any kind of analysis or data visualization. Furthermore, it is one of the most employed programming languages for general purposes. The goal of this work is helping to share ideas and resources to improve teaching and/or research using the statistical software R. We will cover its benefits, show how to get started and where to locate specific resources, and will make interesting recommendations for using R, according to our experience. For the classroom we will develop a curricular and assessment infrastructure to support both dissemination and evaluation, while for research we will offer a broader approach to quantitative studies that provides an excellent support for work in science and technology.
