Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of bi-functional chain transfer agent, DMDO (1, 8-dimercapto-3, 6-dioxaoctane) at varying amounts on pressure-sensitive adhesive performance and determination of odor level according to VDA 270 test standard comparing to NDM species synthesized in the same manner. DMDO was incorporated at 0.15, 0.25 and 0.4% s/m ratio and NDM was incorporated at 0.25% s/m ratio into butyl acrylate and acrylic acid copolymer latexes via seeded semi-batch emulsion polymerization procedure. With the intended design, pressure-sensitive adhesive performance was investigated depending on the change in molecular weight. Since the increasing amount of DMDO obtained shorter polymer chains and consequently lower molecular weight, the peel adhesion and initial tack values were also increased enhancing better adhesive properties. NDM resulted in the highest initial tack value. However the peel adhesion value was between the peel adhesion values of DMDO-0.15% and DMDO-0.25%. According to the odor test results 0.15% and 0.25% DMDO content had an acceptable odor level whereas the one with 0.4% had very unpleasant and unacceptable odor like NDM at 0.25% for industrial scale uses.
