Abstract:An ultrahigh temperature solar processing platform consisting of a High-Flux Solar Simulator (HFSS) and auxiliary equipments is developed to research high-temperature materials and processes. Refractory metals of zirconium (melting point of 1855 degrees C), niobium (2477 degrees C) and tantalum (3017 degrees C) were successfully melted by concentrated light from xenon lamps of the HFSS. The melting experiment was monitored by a charge-coupled device camera, and the temperature was recorded by a near-infrared multi-wavelength pyrometer. Then the processed metals were examined by SEM and EDS to compare the difference before and after the ultrahigh-temperature experiments. In addition, a numerical model combining Monte-Carlo ray-tracing method and finite-element method was established to simulate the melting process, the results of which agreed well with experimental results. Furthermore, melting temperatures measured by the well-calibrated near-infrared multi wavelength pyrometer were close to the melting points of the refractory metals (i.e., +/- 2% relative error). The experimental platform also demonstrates the capability of providing high radiative flux and ultrahigh temperatures (> 2000 degrees C) for the calibration of heat flux gauges and the testing of high-temperature properties of materials. The concentrated solar energy based ultrahigh temperature technology provides an innovative approach for processing refractory materials in general.
In situ high-temperature emissivity measurements of heat-treated, silicon coated stainless steel for solar thermal applications

Abstract:Understanding thermal emissivity at high temperatures is crucial for developing efficient materials for solar thermal applications. We present a new approach for creating an efficient material for solar absorber by developing a nano structured surface on stainless steel substrate through Si deposition and annealing. We prepare five samples by annealing them at five temperatures between 700 °C and 1100 °C. Afterwards, we perform a systematic study of the spectral emissivity at elevated temperatures, focusing on different parameters: angle dependence, wavelength dependence, and temperature dependence. The spectral directional emissivity experiments performed in the mid-infrared range reveal a dielectric behavior of the samples in the short wavelength region ( λ < 6 μm) and metallic behavior in the long wavelength region ( λ > 12 μm). The results indicate an increase in hemispherical and total normal emissivity with measurement temperature (from 200 °C to 700 °C), influenced by oxide/silicide formation due to interdiffusion, and by surface roughness. Notably, samples annealed at 900 °C and 1000 °C demonstrate enhanced thermal stability at 700 °C, showcasing promising characteristics for high-temperature applications. Consequently, this study presents a viable method for developing cost-effective silicon-based solar absorber coatings on stainless steel with tailored properties for solar thermal applications along with its real time high temperature emissivity details.

Abstract:This paper presents the development of instrumentation for the measurement of high-temperature thermal conductivity of bulk and coatings using a modulated photothermal radiometry (MPR) method, where a sample is heated by an intensity-modulated laser to probe into different layers of the sample. While MPR has been previously established, most of the prior studies only focus on the measurement at room temperature. The MPR has not been well studied for measurements of bulk and coating materials at high temperatures, which are increasingly important for a multitude of applications, such as materials used in the concentrating solar power (CSP) plants and the nuclear reactors. MPR is a non-contact technique that utilizes the intrinsic thermal emission from the specimens for thermometry, which is favorable for measurements at high temperatures in harsh environment. The authors designed and utilized a sample holder suitable for high temperature measurement up to 973 K with good temperature uniformity within the sample. The high-temperature MPR setup was validated by measuring bulk materials with known thermal conductivity. The setup and technique were then extended to the measurement of black solar-absorbing coatings of 10 to 50 μm thick on various substrates by modulating the frequency of the laser heating beam and the thermal penetration depth. The studies showed that thermal conductivities of typical solar-absorbing coatings are 0.4 ~ 0.8 W m−1 K−1, indicating a possibly large temperature drop within the coating under high solar irradiation flux, such as over 1000-sun for central solar towers in CSP plants.

Abstract:The importance and necessity of high temperature dynamic measurement techniques is analyzed in the paper. According to the requirement of solid rocket engine test, infrared radiation thermometry technology, colorimetric measurement technology and multi-wavelength radiation thermometry technology are used in the high temperature dynamic measurement device. The device worked well under harsh environment in the test site. Testing data is analyzed during the experiment and the results match the theoretical calculation. Application analysis of high temperature dynamic measurement techniques is made. It is clearly that optical measurement technology is quite prospected in the model test.

Abstract:The need for advanced materials that can meet application requirements at ultra-high temperatures in oxidizing environments is an area of active research. One challenge facing the high temperature materials community is the ability to conduct controlled ultra-high temperature oxidation tests with minimal to no contamination or reaction with the chamber. A unique resistive heating system (RHS) capable of achieving ultra-high temperatures (> 1700 °C) to enable such experimentation is described. A concern of such a system is the potential presence of thermal gradients in directions not reflective of actual material applications, e.g., the hottest region being in the center of the sample. Experimental results from the oxidation of ZrB 2 specimens at nominal temperatures of 1500°, 1700° and 1800 °C in low pO 2 (0.1–1% O 2 in Ar) environments are presented. Specimen thermal gradients generated during oxidation were evaluated using finite element analysis models. Thermal gradients on the order of the uncertainty in temperature measurements were calculated, confirming the RHS suitability for conducting ultra-high temperature oxidation exposures on ultra-high temperature ceramics.

Abstract:Efficient absorption of solar radiation with minimal thermal losses is required for efficient solar-to-thermal energy conversion. For this purpose, spectrally selective and omnidirectional surfaces are required that have strong, ideally unity, absorption in the solar spectral window for all incident angles and low, ideally zero, emissivity in the spectral range of blackbody radiation at operating temperature. In this article, we propose theoretically and experimentally lithographic free broadband and omnidirectional solar absorber for high-temperature applications made in a dielectric-metal-dielectric-metal fashion. We have used chromium ( Cr ), titanium ( Ti ), and tungsten ( W ) as a metal layer in the designed absorber due to their high thermal stability at high temperatures and compared their performance. The power balance equation is used to calculate the steady-state temperature considering free and forced convection conditions. W -based absorber shows >90% absorption in the solar window below cutoff wavelength for blackbody working at 600 K with <10% emissivity in the thermal window. Finally, we fabricate the W -based sample and experimentally measure the temperature rise of 100 K under one sun condition. The designed absorber can be used for several solar-thermal applications including solar-steam to electricity generation, water purification, space heating, and solar-thermal energy storage.

Abstract:Zirconium oxide (ZrO2) is widely used as the thermal barrier coating in turbines and engines. Accurate emissivity measurement of ZrO2 coating at high temperatures, especially above 1000 °C, plays a vital role in thermal modelling and radiation thermometry. However, it is an extremely challenging enterprise, and very few high temperature emissivity results with rigorously estimated uncertainties have been published to date. The key issue for accurately measuring the high temperature emissivity is maintaining a hot surface without reflection from the hot environment, and avoiding passive or active oxidation of material, which will modify the emissivity. In this paper, a novel modified integrated blackbody method is reported to measure the high temperature normal spectral emissivity of ZrO2 coating in the temperature range 1000 °C to 1200 °C and spectral range 8 μm to 14 μm. The results and the associated uncertainty of the measurement were estimated and a relative standard uncertainty better than 7% (k = 2) is achieved.

Abstract:Concentrating solar power, particularly parabolic trough system with solar concentrations less than 50, requires spectrally selective solar absorbers that are thermally stable at high temperatures of 400degC above to achieve high efficiency. In this work, the solar-thermal performance of a selective multilayer metafilm absorber is characterized along with a black absorber for comparison by a lab-scale experimental setup that measures the steady-state absorber temperature under multiple solar concentrations. Heat transfer analysis is employed to elucidate different heat transfer modes and validate the solar-thermal experiment. Due to the superior spectral selectivity and excellent thermal stability, the metafilm absorber deposited on the cost-effective stainless steel foil could achieve the solar-thermal efficiency 57% at a steady-state temperature of 371degC under 10 suns during the lab-scale experiment with losses, while a highest efficiency of 83% was projected under the same conditions for practical solar thermal applications. The results here will facilitate the research and development of novel solar materials for high-efficiency solar thermal energy conversion.

Abstract:Current heat transfer fluids for concentrated solar power applications are limited by their high temperature stability. Other fluids that are capable of operating at high temperatures have very high melting points. The present work is aimed at characterizing potential solar heat transfer fluid candidates that are likely to be thermally stable (up to 500 °C) with a lower melting point (∼100 °C). Binary and ternary mixtures of nitrates have the potential for being such heat transfer fluids. To characterize such eutectic media, both experimental measurements and analytical methods resulting in phase diagrams and other properties of the fluids are essential. Solidus and liquidus data have been determined using a differential scanning calorimeter over the range the compositions for each salt system and mathematical models have been derived using Gibbs Energy minimization. The Gibbs models presented in this paper sufficiently fit the experimental results as well as providing accurate predictions of the eutectic compositions and temperatures for each system. The methods developed here are expected to have broader implications in the identification of optimizing new heat transfer fluids for a wide range of applications, including solar thermal power systems.

Abstract:Due to economic and environmental requirements there is a strong need both to increase the efficiency and to monitor the actual status of gas turbines, rocket engines and deep drilling systems. For these applications, micromachined pressure sensors based on a robust substrate material (e.g. sapphire) as well as strain gauges made of platinum for long-term stable operation are regarded as most promising to withstand harsh environments such as high temperature levels, aggressive media and/or high pressure loads. For pre-evaluation purposes, a novel, custom-built measurement set-up is presented allowing the determination of electro-mechanical thin film properties up to 850 °C. Key components of the measurement set-up are the one-sided clamped beam made of Al2O3 ceramics which is deflected by a quartz rod and a high precision encoder-controlled dc motor to drive the quartz rod. The specific arrangement of the infrared halogen heaters in combination with the gold coated quartz half shells ensures a high degree of temperature homogeneity along the beam axis. When exposed to tensile as well as compressive load conditions, the corresponding gauge factor values of 1 µm thick platinum thin films show a good comparison at room temperature and in the temperature range from 600 up to 850 °C where the effects originating from grain boundaries or from the film surfaces are negligible. Between 150 and 600 °C, however, a strong deviation in the gauge factor determination depending on the mechanical load condition is observed, which is attributed to the gliding of adjacent grains.

Abstract:Abstract Hypersonic vehicles and aircraft engine blades face complex and harsh environments such as high heat flow density and high temperature, and they are generally narrow curved spaces, making it impossible to actually install them for testing. Thin-film heat flux sensors (HFSs) have the advantages of small size, fast response, and in-situ fabrication, but they are prone to reach thermal equilibrium and thus fail during testing. In our manuscript, an ITO–In 2 O 3 thick film heat flux sensor (HFS) is designed, and a high-temperature heat flux test system is built to simulate the working condition of a blade subjected to heat flow impact. The simulation and test results show that the test performance of the thick-film HFS is improved by optimizing the structure and parameters. Under the condition of no water cooling, the designed HFS can realize short-time heat flux monitoring at 1450 °C and long-term stable monitoring at 1300 °C and below. With a maximum output thermopotential of 17.8 mV and an average test sensitivity of 0.035 mV/(kW/m 2 ), the designed HFS has superior high-temperature resistance that cannot be achieved by other existing thin (thick) film HFSs. Therefore, the designed HFS has great potential for application in harsh environments such as aerospace, weaponry, and industrial metallurgy.

Abstract:High-temperature particle receivers are being developed to achieve temperatures in excess of 700 °C for advanced power cycles and solar thermochemical processes. This paper describes designs and features of a falling particle receiver system that has been evaluated and tested at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility at Sandia National Laboratories. These advanced designs are intended to reduce heat losses and increase the thermal efficiency. Novel features include aperture covers, active air flow, particle flow obstructions, and optimized receiver shapes that minimize advective heat losses, increase particle curtain opacity and uniformity, and reduce cavity wall temperatures. Control systems are implemented in recent on-sun tests to maintain a desired particle outlet temperature using an automated closed-loop proportional–integral–derivative controller. These tests demonstrate the ability to achieve and maintain particle outlet temperatures approaching 800 °C with efficiencies between 60 and 90%, depending on incident power, mass flow, and environmental conditions. Lessons learned regarding the testing of design features and overall receiver operation are also presented.

Abstract:Thermal interface materials are crucial to minimize the thermal resistance between a semiconductor device and a heat sink, especially for high-power electronic devices, which are susceptible to self-heating-induced failures. The effectiveness of these interface materials depends on their low thermal contact resistance coupled with high thermal conductivity. Various characterization techniques are used to determine the thermal properties of the thermal interface materials. However, their bulk or free-standing thermal properties are typically assessed rather than their thermal performance when applied as a thin layer in real application. In this study, we introduce a low-frequency range frequency domain thermoreflectance method that can measure the effective thermal conductivity and volumetric heat capacity of thermal interface materials simultaneously in situ, illustrated on silver-filled thermal interface material samples, offering a distinct advantage over traditional techniques such as ASTM D5470. Monte Carlo fitting is used to quantify the thermal conductivities and heat capacities and their uncertainties, which are compared to a more efficient least-squares method.
Measurement of High-Temperature Spectral Emissivity Using Integral Blackbody Approach

Abstract:Spectral emissivity is one of the most critical thermophysical properties of a material for heat design and analysis. Especially in the traditional radiation thermometry, normal spectral emissivity is very important. We developed a prototype instrument based upon an integral blackbody method to measure material's spectral emissivity at elevated temperatures. An optimized commercial variable-high-temperature blackbody, a high speed linear actuator, a linear pyrometer, and an in-house designed synchronization circuit was used to implemented the system. A sample was placed in a crucible at the bottom of the blackbody furnace, by which the sample and the tube formed a simulated reference blackbody which had an effective total emissivity greater than 0.985. During the measurement, a pneumatic cylinder pushed a graphite rode and then the sample crucible to the cold opening within hundreds of microseconds. The linear pyrometer was used to monitor the brightness temperature of the sample surface, and the corresponding opto-converted voltage was fed and recorded by a digital multimeter. To evaluate the temperature drop of the sample along the pushing process, a physical model was proposed. The tube was discretized into several isothermal cylindrical rings, and the temperature of each ring was measurement. View factors between sample and rings were utilized. Then, the actual surface temperature of the sample at the end opening was obtained. Taking advantages of the above measured voltage signal and the calculated actual temperature, normal spectral emissivity under the that temperature point was obtained. Graphite sample at 1300 degrees C was measured to prove the validity of the method.
Experimental Demonstration of Dynamic Thermal Regulation using Vanadium Dioxide Thin Films

Abstract:We present an experimental demonstration of passive, dynamic thermal regulation in a solid-state system with temperature-dependent thermal emissivity switching. We achieve this effect using a multilayered device, comprised of a vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin film on a silicon substrate with a gold back reflector. We experimentally characterize the optical properties of the VO2 film and use the results to optimize device design. Using a calibrated, transient calorimetry experiment we directly measure the temperature fluctuations arising from a time-varying heat load. Under laboratory conditions, we find that the device regulates temperature better than a constant emissivity sample. We use the experimental results to validate our thermal model, which can be used to predict device performance under the conditions of outer space. In this limit, thermal fluctuations are halved with reference to a constant-emissivity sample.

Millisecond Time-Scale Measurements of Heat Transfer to an Open Bath of He II

Abstract:We explore steady state and transient heat transfer from a narrow, rectangular stainless steel heater strip cooled from one side by an open bath of He~II. Setup validation is done by fitting the Kapitza heat transfer expression $Q = a_\mathrm{K} \left( {T_\mathrm{s}}^{n_\mathrm{K}} - {T_\mathrm{b}}^{n_\mathrm{K}} \right)$ to steady state measurements, finding fit parameters within the expected range; $a_\mathrm{K}$ = 1316.8$\pm10\%$ $\mathrm{W}\mathrm{m}^{-2}\mathrm{K}^{-1}$, $n_\mathrm{K}$ = 2.528$\pm10\%$. We find critical heat flux in line with estimates from literature, and the time between a step in heating and the onset of film boiling follows the expected $\propto Q^{-4}$ dependence. During the first millisecond after a step in applied heating power density our measurements show a slower thermal rise time than that found by a time-dependent one-dimensional model of our setup using the steady state Kapitza heat transfer expression as the cooling boundary condition. However, the results compare favourably with transient measurements in literature. After the first millisecond, agreement between measurement and model is excellent. We do not find conclusive evidence of an orientation dependence of the Kapitza heat transfer mechanism, nor heat transfer differences that can be attributed to local surface variations along the same heater.

Abstract:This study develops a measurement system and a method for measuring the normal spectral emissivity and temperature of low thermal conductivity materials at high temperatures. A self-design heating device using a synergistic heating treatment including a high-power laser and a radiation heating cavity is introduced, and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer is utilized to measure the radiation signal of sample. Based on the temperature hypothesis model, which considers normal spectral emissivity keeps constant within small temperature difference less than 10.0 K, a method is proposed for realizing the inversion of normal spectral emissivity and temperature with the multispectral radiation signal. A genetic algorithm-based technique with big mutations is used to estimate the normal spectral emissivity and temperature of sample at high temperatures. The variation of blackbody radiation signals with the blackbody radiance is analyzed to verify the linearity for the detector of FTIR spectrometer. The apparent normal spectral emissivity of an alumina ceramic fiber is determined in the spectral range of 2.5-25.0 μm at 673-1273 K. Furthermore, the uniformity of temperature distribution on the sample surface and inside the sample is numerically evaluated. The standard uncertainty in the experiment at 1273 K is less than 4.0% in the investigated bands.

Abstract:Temperature measurements inside semi-transparent materials are important in many fields. This study investigates the measurements of interior temperature distributions in a one-dimensional semi-transparent material using multi-wavelength pyrometry based on the Levenberg–Marquardt method (LMM). The investigated material is semi-transparent Zinc Sulfide (ZnS), an infrared-transmitting optical material operating at long wavelengths. The radiation properties of the one-dimensional semi-transparent ZnS plate, including the effective spectral–directional radiation intensity and the proportion of emitted radiation, are numerically discussed at different wavelengths (8.0–14.0μm) and temperature distributions (400–800K) to provide the basic data for the temperature inversion problem. Multi-wavelength pyrometry was combined with the Levenberg–Marquardt method to resolve the temperature distribution along the radiative transfer direction based on the line-of-sight spectral radiation intensities at multiple wavelengths in the optimized spectral range of (11.0–14.0μm) for the semi-transparent ZnS plate. The analyses of the non-linear inverse problem show that with less than 5.0% noise, the inversion temperature results using the Levenberg–Marquardt method are satisfactory for linear or Gaussian temperature distributions in actual applications. The analysis provides valuable guidelines for applications using multi-wavelength pyrometry for temperature measurements of semi-transparent materials.

Abstract:In this work, we develop an instrument to study the ablation and oxidation process of materials such as C/SiC (carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide composites) and ultra-high temperature ceramic in extremely high temperature environment. The instrument is integrated with high speed cameras with filtering lens, infrared thermometers and water vapor generator for image capture, temperature measurement, and humid atmosphere, respectively. The ablation process and thermal shock as well as the temperature on both sides of the specimen can be in situ monitored. The results show clearly the dynamic ablation and liquid oxide flowing. In addition, we develop an algorithm for the post-processing of the captured images to obtain the deformation of the specimens, in order to better understand the behavior of the specimen subjected to high temperature.
