Abstract:Porous carbon derived from rice hulls has potential for application in phosphorus-carbon composites as high capacity anode materials for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. The native composition of rice husks produces a porous carbon with a unique doped structure, as well as an efficient pore and channel structure, which may facilitate high and stable lithium storage. After cycling for over 100 cycles, the composite delivered a capacity of about 1293 mAh g-1, as well as a coulombic efficiency of nearly 99% at the current density of 130 mA g-1 with a capacity density of 1.43 mAh cm-2. High specific discharge capacities were maintained at different current densities (∼2224, ∼1895, ∼1642, and ∼1187 mAh g-1 composite at 130, 260, 520, and 1300 mA g-1, respectively). This study may offer a golden opportunity to change the humble fate of rice hulls, and also pave the way toward successful battery application for phosphorus-carbon composite anode materials.

Abstract:The exploration of natural resources as sustainable precursors affords a family of green materials. Exploring highly abundant and available biowaste precursors remaining from food processing throughout a scalable and cost-effective material synthesis path is highly important especially for new materials discovery in emerging energy storage technologies such as lithium–sulphur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, we have produced a series of carbon materials with hierarchical micro-/mesopores from a very cheap and abundant lignocellulosic bio-waste, namely rice husk. The carbonisation of the lignocellulosic fraction leads to the formation of micropores while the removal of the silica present naturally in the rice husk composition allows the formation of mesopores. We can easily tune the ratio of micropores to mesopores by simply tuning the synthesis conditions in order to achieve an optimal performance in Li–S batteries after sulphur infiltration into the resulting porous carbons. Our optimal cathode scaffold for Li–S batteries exhibited a high capacity of 1032 mA h g−1 at a current density of 0.1 C. An ultralow decay rate of 0.055% per cycle was achieved. The appearance of abundant micropores with a higher surface area renders a high initial capacity of sulphur to polysulphides; however, the sufficient mesopore volume is more vital for a lower cyclic decay, which is prerequisite for the generation of solid products and smooth ion diffusion. This work, besides reporting on an efficient method to produce efficient electrode materials from waste to be used in energy storage technologies also provides fresh insights into the required structural features to allow effective cathode materials for high-performance Li–S batteries.

Abstract:The serious shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics hinder the practical implementation of Li-S batteries. Here, we proposed a general method for large-scale synthesis of hierarchical porous SiO2@C host derived from waste rice husks. The prepared SiO2@C-2.5S cathode exhibits superior electrochemical properties, which can be attributed to the physical adsorption of porous carbon shell and chemical anchoring effect of SiO2 nanoparticles. Moreover, the hierarchical porous carbon matrix provides a highly conductive channel for rapid electron and ion transport, and offers enough space for the volume expansion of elemental S during the reaction.

Abstract:There is an ever-increasing interest in the utilization of biomass carbon materials as the host materials of sulfur for Li-S batteries. Herein, an in-situ N (1.67 at%) and O (12.1 at%) dual-doped porous carbon derived from rapeseed meal has been fabricated by KOH activation and subsequent carbonization. The obtained material possesses abundant micropores and mesopores with a relatively high specific surface area of 2434.9 m(2) g(-1) and a large pore volume of 1.49 cm(3) g(-1), contributing to physical and chemical dual-adsorption for polysulfides. The carbon material is composited with sulfur, delivers a high reversible capacity of 1259 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C and exhibits excellent cycling stability (512 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at the areal mass loading of S of 2.4 mg cm(-2)). This work proposes an efficient method to develop carbon-based electrode materials with heteroatom dual-doped hierarchical framework from waste for high performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Hard carbon materials are employed as a novel anode material in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to its large specific surface area, high specific capacity and stable cycle performance. In this work, we report the use of SiO2 as a template to prepare porous hard carbon materials from the environmental-friendly rice husks (RHs), among which the porous carbon material hydrothermally treated for 24h exhibits splendid micro-morphology and excellent electrochemical performance. The charge specific capacity can still reach 679.9 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.2C. Abstract:A nano–sized microporous carbon has been successfully prepared through a carbonization of rice paste followed by heat treatment process and ball–milling. The nano–sized porous carbon with a high specific surface area and abundant micropores can effectively increase the sulfur loading. After loading sulfur, the microporous–carbon/S with a sulfur content of 74.2% exhibited a remarkable initial capacity of 865 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and maintained at 689 mAh g−1 over 100 cycles. Moreover, the composite displayed superior rate capabilities of 1132, 1078, 860 and 674 mAh g−1 at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 A g−1. The outstanding electrochemical capabilities and facile low–cost preparation process make the nano–sized microporous carbon as an excellent candidate for lithium sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Herein, a magnesiothermic reduction strategy is employed to synthesize three‐dimensional structured silicon/carbon (Si/C) material, using rice husk as raw materials. The composition and morphology of Si/C material are investigated by XRD, Raman, SEM and TEM. The unique structure benefits from the naturally conductive network of biomass carbon, and ensures the excellent electrochemistry performance. Utilizing for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) anode material, this Si/C composite behaves good cycling stability (537 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 ), and enhanced rate capacity (640.31,521.6,415.88, and 331.71 mA h g −1 at current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 A g −1 , respectively). Our research exhibits a new strategy for preparing low‐cost and environmental‐friendly Si/C material and possesses enormous potential to be extended to other biomass anode materials.

Abstract:Traditional graphite anodes have a specific capacity of approximately 372 mAh/g, whereas silicon presents a promising alternative with theoretical capacities reaching up to 4200 mAh/g. However, substantial volumetric changes in silicon during lithiation lead to rapid degradation of capacitance. This study explores the utilization of rice husk, an abundant agricultural waste, as a raw material for Si/C composites. Rice husk inherently contains significant amounts of silicon and carbon, rendering it a sustainable and economical source. The activated carbon was derived from rice husk by carbonization and thermochemically activation with activation temperature of 850 °C and KOH agent. The silicon dioxide was derived from rice husk by subjecting to annealing in a muffle furnace at 650 °C for 4 h following NaOH and HCl solution treatment. The silicon was derived from silicon dioxide by thermomagnesium treatment in a tube furnace at 700 °C for 120 min. SEM, elemental analysis, XRD, Raman, and FT-IR were used to characterize the materials to evaluate their morphological and structural composition. Electrochemical performance evaluation demonstrated improved energy capacity and stability, highlighting rice husk-derived Si/C composites as a viable solution for advancing lithium-ion battery performance. This innovative approach not only lowers production costs but also supports sustainable development by effectively utilizing agricultural waste.

Popcorn Inspired Porous Macrocellular Carbon: Rapid Puffing Fabrication from Rice and Its Applications in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The advancement of electrochemical energy storage is closely bound up with the breakthrough of controllable fabrication of energy materials. Inspired by a popcorn fabrication from corn raw, herein a unique porous macrocellular carbon composed of cross‐linked nano/microsheets by a powerful puffing of rice precursor is described. The rice is directly puffed with a volume enlargement of ≈20 times when it is instantaneously released from a sealed environment with a high pressure of 1.0 MPa at 200 °C. Interestingly, when metal (e.g., Ni) nanoparticles are embedded in the puffed rice derived carbon (PRC), high‐quality PRC/metal composites are achieved with attractive properties of a high electrical conductivity of ≈7.2 × 104 S m−1, a large porosity of 85.1%, and a surface area of 1492.2 m2 g−1. The PRC/Ni are employed as a host in lithium–sulfur batteries. The designed PRC/Ni/S electrode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 1257.2 mA h g−1 at 0.2 C, a prolonged cycle life (821 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles), and enhanced rate capability, much better than other counterparts (PRC/S and rGO/S). The excellent properties are attributed to the advantages of PRC/Ni network with a high electrical conductivity, strong adsorption/blocking ability for polysulfides, and interconnected porous framework.

Abstract:The unique hierarchical structures over multiple length scales (micrometer-to-nanometer levels) possessed by the natural biosubstances make them to be ideal substrates for the syntheses of functional nanostructured artificial materials. In this work, nanostructured silicon/carbon and silica/carbon nanocomposites derived from rice husks were obtained, which showed enhanced electrochemical performances as being employed as anodic materials for lithium-ion batteries. The homogeneous silicon/carbon composite was synthesized via a one-pot carbonization/magnesiothermic-reduction process of the rice husk, which was composed of fine silicon nanocrystals embedded in the carbon matrix. As being applied as an anodic material, it delivered a high reversible capacity of 560 mAh g(-1) as cycled at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) over 180 cycles with good structural stability. Direct carbonization of the rice husk resulted in the silica/carbon nanocomposite, and it was found that, as being employed as an anodic material, the higher carbonization temperature led to better electrochemical performances such as the cycling stability (650 mAh g(-1) after 150 cycles at 100 mA g(-1) for the sample carbonized at 900 degrees C) and rate capacity. Silver nanoparticles were further composited with the silicon/carbon and silica/carbon hybrids to make the corresponding ternary nanocomposites, resulting in improved electrochemical performances.
Coralline-Like N-Doped Hierarchically Porous Carbon Derived from Enteromorpha as a Host Matrix for Lithium-Sulfur Battery

Abstract:Coralline-like N-doped hierarchically porous carbon (CNHPC) was prepared through a hydrothermal carbonization process using a sea pollutant enteromorpha as the starting material. The addition of a small amount of glucose during carbonization improved the yield of carbon, and the inherent N contents, especially for pyrrolic N and pyridinic N atoms. After loading 40 wt. % sulfur, the CNHPC/S composite, as a cathode in a Li-S battery, exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 1617 mAh g-1 (96.5 % of theoretical capacity) at 0.1 C and a capacity loss of 0.05 % per charge-discharge cycle after 500 cycles at 0.5 C with a stable Coulombic efficiency of 100 % in carbonate based electrolyte. Such a great performance can be attributed to the coralline-like hierarchically porous infrastructure and inherently abundant N doping. Given the conversion of waste pollutants into valuable energy-storage materials and the easy process, this work features a promising approach to prepare C/S cathodes for Li-S batteries. The special structural and textural characteristics of CNHPC might be attractive to other practical applications such as supercapacitors and catalysis.

Abstract:Lithium sulfur (Li-S) battery has been regarded as the promising energy storage device. However, this technology faces great challenges from both anode and cathode, which are mainly caused by the nature of materials. Here, we report a kind of multifunctional carbon derived from biomass like rice husk for optimizing both lithium (Li) metal anode and sulfur (S) cathode for Li-S batteries. It has been proved that the surface functionalized rice husk derived carbon could effectively achieve the controllable deposition of Li. Notably, the nucleation overpotential is reduced and the Coulombic efficiency is also improved. As for the cathode, the biomass carbon with high specific surface area and natural SiO2 nanoparticles is benificial for confining sulfur and sulfides. As a result, when the modified Li metal anode paired with carbon/sulfur composite, the battery delivers improved discharge capacity, rate capability and cycling stability. Moreover, the overpotential between charge and discharge process in Li-S batteries is obviously lowered compared with bare Li foil. This novel and straightforward design via employing sustainable biomass for constructing both anode and cathode materials may do great help to achieve the commercialization of Li-S batteries.
Biomass Waste Inspired Highly Porous Carbon for High Performance Lithium/Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The synthesis of highly porous carbon (HPC) materials from poplar catkin by KOH chemical activation and hydrothermal carbonization as a conductive additive to a lithium-sulfur cathode is reported. Elemental sulfur was composited with as-prepared HPC through a melt diffusion method to form a S/HPC nanocomposite. Structure and morphology characterization revealed a hierarchically sponge-like structure of HPC with high pore volume (0.62 cm³∙g −1 ) and large specific surface area (1261.7 m²∙g −1 ). When tested in Li/S batteries, the resulting compound demonstrated excellent cycling stability, delivering a second-specific capacity of 1154 mAh∙g −1 as well as presenting 74% retention of value after 100 cycles at 0.1 C. Therefore, the porous structure of HPC plays an important role in enhancing electrochemical properties, which provides conditions for effective charge transfer and effective trapping of soluble polysulfide intermediates, and remarkably improves the electrochemical performance of S/HPC composite cathodes.

Abstract:With the advantages of high conductivity and low cost, porous carbons have been considered as the most attractive materials as hosts of sulfur cathode in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). However, LSBs always suffer short cycle life due to the "shuttle effect" of lithium polysulfide species (polysulfides), which are intermediate products during the charge/discharge processes. The weak interaction between carbon and polysulfides results in the dissolution of polysulfides from the cathodes, loss of active material and eventually fast capacity fading. To overcome these drawbacks, we employed a biomass-derived carbon as the host material in sulfur cathodes. Results from X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen sorption reveals that this biomass-derived product is amorphous carbon and is composed of both large (>10 nm) and small ( 800 mAh/g and retain >80% of initial capacity after 200 cycles. Especially, the activated carbons exhibited 80% capacity retention after 400 cycles. The promising LSB performance could be ascribed to the unique porous architecture of biomass-derived carbons. The meso/micropores in biomass-derived carbons could provide more sites to anchor sulfur and polysulfides, while macropores provide channels for fast transport of ions. This was corroborated by the results from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and absorption measurements.

Abstract:Inspired by the structure of peony flower, a nanostructured peony-like ZnO was bionically designed. This bionic structure has larger specific surface area and lamellar spacing, which provides more active sites for ion storage, and the combination with natural biomass rice husk carbon can effectively alleviate volume expansion, improve conductivity, and perform excellent cycle performance and rate performance in the battery. After 100 cycles at 0.2 C rate, the discharge specific capacity of this composite structure in LIB reaches 819.9 mAh g −1 . At the current density of 139.5 mAh g −1 , the reversible capacity in PIB reached 119 mAh g −1 after 50 cycles, and the capacity was stable at 91.9 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles.

Abstract:We developed a simple and scalable chemical method to obtain phosphorus-doped porous carbon (P-PCRH) by optimized acid treatment and thermal annealing of rice husk with triphenylphosphine (TPP). After doping with phosphorus (doping level of similar to 4.14 at% P), the P-PC-RH electrode increases by almost half the reversible capacity (757 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at 100 mA g(-1)) of porous carbon without phosphorus doping (PC-RH-x, x = 2, 4, 6). When cycled at a high current of 2000 mA g(-1), it still delivers a reversible specific capacity of 382 mA h g(-1). The improved electrochemical performance of P-PC-RH is attributed to the synergetic effect of the 3D interconnected porous structure and phosphorus doping, which can maintain perfect electrical conductivity throughout the electrode and enhance electrochemical activities for lithium storage.

Abstract:Excellent cyclic performance carbon-coated porous silicon(c-PS) intended for the fabrication of lithium ion battery anode were synthesized by high temperature solid-state sintering process and hydrothermal method using glucose as carbon source.The phase composition and micro-morphology of the samples were characterized by the X-ray diffractometer(XRD);and scanning electron microscope(SEM);and different mass ratios of Si/C were discussed.The structural stability of porous silicon are sustained;and the electrical conductivity and volume change during repeated cycles of lithium insertion/extraction of composite materials are significantly improved after modification of amorphous carbon.After 100 cycles,the c-PS maintained a reversible capacity of approximately 608.7 mA·h/g with a capacity attenuation rate of 0.41% per cycle after 10 cycles.

Abstract:Biomass-derived porous carbon BPC-700, incorporating micropores and small mesopores, was prepared through pyrolysis of banana peel followed by activation with KOH. A high specific BET surface area (2741 m2 g-1 ), large specific pore volume (1.23 cm3 g-1 ), and well-controlled pore size distribution (0.6-5.0 nm) were obtained and up to 65 wt % sulfur content could be loaded into the pores of the BPC-700 sample. When the resultant C/S composite, BPC-700-S65, was used as the cathode of a Li-S battery, a large initial discharge capacity (ca. 1200 mAh g-1 ) was obtained, indicating a good sulfur utilization rate. An excellent discharge capacity (590 mAh g-1 ) was also achieved for BPC-700-S65 at the high current rate of 4 C (12.72 mA cm-2 ), showing its extremely high rate capability. A reversible capacity of about 570 mAh g-1 was achieved for BPC-700-S65 after 500 cycles at 1 C (3.18 mA cm-2 ), indicating an outstanding cycling stability.
