Abstract:Herein, we present a facile synthesis of hierarchical carbon frameworks with microporous skeletons and interconnected meso/macropores by employing poly(vinylidene chloride-co-methyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene copolymers as precursors. The obtained porosity can be tuned over a broad range via well-selected block proportions of the precursor, enabling its advantageous applications in target-oriented energy storage systems.

Abstract:Porous carbon has been used in many fields because of its adjustable porosity and morphology. However, the prevailing synthesis of porous carbon from organic precursors suffers from complicated procedure and the emission of pollutants and greenhouse gas. Herein, an environmentally benign and facile strategy is reported to rapidly synthesize hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) from greenhouse gas (CO2) at low temperatures. CO2 reacts with sodium hydride (NaH) to produce foam-like HPC, hydrogen, and sodium carbonate at 320 degrees C in 15 s. No other byproducts or pollutants are produced in the synthesis process. As-synthesized foam-like HPC shows high macro-meso-microporosity, which may facilitate more lithium-ion storage in foam-like HPC. When applied as anode materials for lithium-ions batteries, the foam-like HPC shows a reversible capacity of similar to 630 mAh g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) after 200 cycles and maintains stable reversible capacity of similar to 470 mAh g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1) even up to 500 cycles. This green and efficient strategy offers us an alternative route to synthesize HPCs for energy storage from greenhouse gas.

Abstract:Coal tar pitch (CTP) is a high-quality raw material for producing functional carbon materials owing to its high carbon yield and high degree of condensation. The rational structure regulation of CTP-derived carbon materials is paramount for their special application. Herein, a green template strategy is proposed to fabricate hierarchically porous carbon (HPC) and employ it as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries. It can be demonstrated that the mass ratio of the template (KHCO3) and carbon source (CTP) significantly influences the microstructure and electrochemical performances of HPC. HPC-3 synthesized by a mass ratio of 3:1 shows a coral-like lamellar nanostructure with high specific surface area, developed nanopores, and ample defects, enabling fast and high-flux lithium storage. Thus, the HPC-3 electrode achieves an excellent rate capacity of 219 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1 and maintains a high discharge capacity of 660 mAh g−1 after 1400 cycles at 1 A g−1. This work takes a step towards the high-value-added and green utilization of CTP and offers a promising solution for the sustainable production of advanced carbon electrode materials.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) with optimized ultrafine micropores ( 5 nm) are synthesized for a state-of-the-art Li-ion storage capacity. The HPCs are synthesized by direct carbonization of zinc citrate, while joint templating and activation effects of ZnO result in this hierarchical porous architecture and large specific area. The HPC obtained at 1200 °C (HPC-1200) displays the largest specific area (2245 m 2 g −1 ) and pore volume (3.45 cm 3 g −1 ) combined with an average pore size of 3.63 nm. This unique porous structure results in the highest specific capacity of 1850 mA h g −1 (Li 5 C 6 ) at 0.1 A g −1 , and superior rate performance and cycling stability. More significantly, mechanisms for this maximal capacity are investigated. It is found that mesopores are more effective to increase capacity, while micropores buffer Li-intercalation stress. Energy storage of HPC is surface-controlled with enhanced capacity achieved at enlarged surface area. In addition, the HPC-1200 exhibits excellent performance for assembly of full batteries with noticeable specific energy of 271.4 W h kg −1 achieved at 195.5 W kg −1 , and the full battery is workable for energy-delivery when the specific power increases to 19 kW kg −1 .

Abstract:Hierarchically porous carbon nanomaterials with well-defined architecture can afford a promising platform for effectively addressing energy and environmental concerns. Herein, a totally green and straightforward synthesis strategy for the fabrication of hierarchically porous carbon nanotubes (HPCNTs) by a simple carbonization treatment without any assistance of soft/hard templates and activation procedures is demonstrated. A high specific surface area of 1419 m(2) g(-1) and hierarchical micro-/meso-/macroporosity can be achieved for the HPCNTs. The unique porous architecture enables the HPCNTs serving as excellent electrode/host materials for high-performance supercapacitors and Li-sulfur batteries. Abstract:Customized design of well-defined cathode structures with abundant adsorption sites and rapid diffusion dynamics, holds great promise in filling capacity gap of carbonaceous cathodes towards high-performance Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHC). Herein, we fabricate a series of dynamics-oriented hierarchical porous carbons derived from the unique organic-inorganic interpenetrating polymer networks. The interpenetrating polymer networks are obtained through physically knitting polyferric chloride (PFC) network into the highly crosslinked resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) network. Instead of covalent bonding, physical interpenetrating force in such RF-PFC networks efficiently relieves the RF skeleton shrinkage upon pyrolysis. Meanwhile, the in-situ PFC network sacrifices as a structure-directing agent to suppress the macrophase separation, and correspondingly 3D hierarchical porous structure with plentiful ion-diffusion channels (pore volume of 1.35 cm3/g) is generated in the representative HPC4 via nanospace occupation and swelling effect. Further removal of Fe fillers leaves behind a large accessible specific surface area of 1550 m2/g for enhanced Zn-ion adsorption. When used as the cathode for ZHC, HPC4 demonstrates a remarkable electrochemical performance with a specific capacity of 215.1 mAh/g at 0.5 A/g and a high Zn2+ ion diffusion coefficient of 11.1×10−18 cm2/s. The ZHC device yields 117.0 Wh/kg energy output at a power density of 272.1 W/kg, coupled with good cycle lifespan (100,000 cycles@10 A/g). This work inspires innovative insights to accelerate Zn diffusion dynamics by structure elaboration towards high-capacity cathode materials.

Abstract:Secondary battery as an efficient energy conversion device have been highly attractive for alleviating the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Hierarchical porous carbon materials with multiple sizes pore channels are considered as promising materials for energy conversion and storage applications, due to their high specific surface area and excellent electrical conductivity. Although many reviews have reported on carbon materials for different fields, systematic summaries about hierarchical porous carbon materials for lithium storage are still rare. In this review, we fist summarize the main preparation methods of hierarchical porous carbon materials, including hard template method, soft template method, and template-free method. The modification methods including porosity and morphology tuning, heteroatom doping, and multiphase composites are introduced systematically. Then, the recent advances in hierarchical porous carbon materials on lithium storage are summarized. Finally, we outline the challenges and future perspectives for the application of hierarchical porous carbon materials in lithium storage.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous carbons (HPCs) with multimodal pore systems exhibit great technological potentials, especially in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis, energy storage, and conversion. Here, we establish a simple and general approach to HPCs by carbonization of nonporous coordination polymers that are produced by mixing metal salts with polytopic ligands in alkaline aqueous solutions at room temperature. The proposed approach is applicable to a wide scope of ligand molecules (18 examples), thus affording the synthesized HPCs with high diversity in porosity, morphology, and composition. In particular, the prepared HPCs exhibit high specific surface areas (up to 2647 m2 g-1) and large pore volumes (up to 2.39 cm3 g-1). The HPCs-supported atomically dispersed Fe-Nx catalysts show much-improved fuel cell cathode performance over the micropore-dominated carbon black-supported catalysts, demonstrating the structural superiority of the HPCs for enhancing the mass transport properties.

Abstract:A hierarchical meso-/micro-porous graphitized carbon with uniform mesopores and ordered micropores, graphitized frameworks, and extra-high surface area of ∼2200 m2/g, was successfully synthesized through a simple one-step chemical vapor deposition process. The commercial mesoporous zeolite Y was utilized as a meso-/ micro-porous template, and the small-molecule methane was employed as a carbon precursor. The as-prepared hierarchical meso-/micro-porous carbons have homogeneously distributed mesopores as a host for electrolyte, which facilitate Li+ ions transport to the large-area micropores, resulting a high reversible lithium ion storage of 1000 mA h/g and a high columbic efficiency of 65% at the first cycle.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials have numerous applications due to their thermal and chemical stability, high surface area and low densities. However, conventional preparing porous carbon through zeolite or silica templates casting has been criticized by the costly and/or toxic procedure. Creating three-dimensional (3D) carbon products is another challenge. Here, we report a facile way to prepare porous carbons from metal-organic gel (MOG) template, an extended metal-organic framework (MOF) structure. We surprisingly found that the carbon products inherit the highly porous nature of MOF and combine with gel's integrated character, which results in hierarchical porous architectures with ultrahigh surface areas and quite large pore volumes. They exhibit considerable hydrogen uptake and excellent electrochemical performance as cathode material for lithium-sulfur battery. This work provides a general method to fast and clean synthesis of porous carbon materials and opens new avenues for the application of metal-organic gel in energy storage.

Abstract:Fabrication of hierarchically porous carbon materials (HPCs) with high surface area and pore volume has always been pursued. However, the currently effective template methods and acid/base activation strategies suffer from the drawbacks of either high costs or tedious steps. Herein, HPCs with 3D macro-mesopores and short-range meso-micropores were fabricated via an easy and sustainable two-step method from biomass. Macro-mesopores were constructed by slightly accumulation/aggregation of carbon spheres ranging from 60 nm to 80 nm, providing efficient mass diffusion pathways. Short-range mesopores and micropores with high electrolyte accessibility were developed in these spheres by air activation. The obtained HPCs showed surface area values up to 1306 m 2 /g and high mesopore volume proportion (63.9%). They demonstrated excellent capacitance and low equivalent series resistance (ESR) as supercapacitor electrode materials, suggesting the efficient diffusion and adsorption of electrolyte ions in the designed hierarchically porous structure.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) materials have been synthesized via a combined freeze drying and carbonization process, that using egg white protein (EW-protein) as a precursor, NaCl as a template. Two competitive effects, salting out and salting in of EW-protein, were conveniently tuned by changing the NaCl concentrations, resulting in controllable hierarchical structures, surface areas and pore size distributions of HPC. The optimal product of HPC-4 displays a 3D honeycomb-like network (100-200 nm), inner cubic mesopores (20-50 nm) and high large surface area of 1745.64m(2) g(-1). As an anode material of Li-ion battery, HPC-4 presents reversible capacity of 1131 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g(-1), good rate capability, and a reversible capacity of 553 mA h g(-1) after 1000 cycles at high current density of 10 A g(-1). Abstract:Tailoring the porous structure of carbon materials is one essential approach to improve the energy storage performance of carbon-based electrode materials. Herein, hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) with different meso-structure are synthesized via a one-pot pyrolysis process with SiO2 and ZnCl2 as template and activator, respectively. The energy storage capacities of the obtained HPC samples are investigated as bi-functional electrode both for supercapacitor and LIBs. The results show that different meso-structure of HPCs can effectively affect the energy storage performance. In the range of 15 ∼ 50 nm, smaller size of mesopore can result better electrochemical performance of HPCs. And the optimized HPC sample (HPC-15) manifests high specific capacitance of 432F g−1 and good cyclic stability in the supercapacitor application. When used as anode of LIBs, the HPC-15 presents a high capacity of 820 mAh g−1. In addition, COMSOL simulation is employed to study the effect of pore structure on mass transfer during electrochemical process. The HPC-15 is calculated to have the highest total porosity (εp) and effective diffusivity of K+ (De = 6.776 × 10-10 m2 s−1), thus leading to its best electrochemical performance.

Abstract:It is quite desirable but challenging to prepare highly active materials for various energy storage applications at low cost. Here, an efficient strategy to produce nitrogen-enriched hierarchical porous carbon (N-HPC) is reported by facile pyrolysis of magnesium citrate and subsequent NH<inf>3</inf> treatment. As-prepared N-HPC presents a developed hierarchical micro- and trimodal meso-porosity with a high specific surface area of 1290 m2 g-1 and pore volume of 3.04 cm3 g-1. It also shows an abundant nitrogen doping of 3.6%. When used for electrochemical electrodes in supercapacitors and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, significantly enhanced performances have been obtained compared with commercially available activated carbon. In supercapacitor testing, the N-HPC electrode shows a specific capacitance of 101 F g-1 in a nonaqueous electrolyte. And the capacitance retains 67% even at a 200-fold charge/discharge rate. Moreover, its performance in Li-S batteries is more outstanding. It enables a very high sulfur loading (76.2% by weight) and the resulting N-HPC/S cathode shows high discharge capacities of 1153 mA h g-1<inf>sulfur</inf> (or 702 mA h g-1<inf>electrode</inf>) at 0.2C and 671 mA h g-1 even at 4C. And it still remains 600 mA h g-1 over 300 charge/discharge cycles at 1C with an average coulombic efficiency of 99.0%. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015.
Facile Strategy to Low-Cost Synthesis of Hierarchically Porous, Active Carbon of High Graphitization for Energy Storage.

Abstract:To achieve high energy/power output, long serving life, and low cost of carbon-based electrodes for energy storage, we have developed a unique synthesis method for the fabrication of hierarchically porous carbon of high graphitization (HPCHG), derived from pyrolysis of an iron-containing organometallic precursor in a molten ZnCl2 media at relatively low temperatures. The as-prepared HPCHG has a large specific surface area (>1200 m2 g-1), abundant micro/mesopores, and plenty of surface defects. When tested in a supercapacitor (SC), the HPCHG electrode delivers 248 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and a high capacitance retention of 52.4% (130 F g-1) at 50 A g-1. When tested in a sodium-ion battery (SIB), the HPCHG electrode exhibits a reversible capacity of 322 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 while maintaining ∼75% of the initial stable capacity after 2000 cycles with the applied current density as high as 5000 mA g-1, implying that the HPCHG electrode is very promising for energy storage.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) holds promise for the application of supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries because of its rapid mass transfer capability. In this work, we propose a facie method to prepare a new class of HPCs by choosing water hyacinth leaves (WHL) as the carbon source. The obtained WHL-based HPC possesses an ultrahigh surface area (2959 m g−1) primarily donated by numerous small-sized nanopores on the nanoparticles, and an aerogel-like macroporous structure aggregated by three-dimensionally interconnected nanoparticles. This hierarchically porous structure coupling with the high surface area can simultaneously enable fast ion transfer and provide plentiful active places for energy storage. Consequently, WHL-based HPC demonstrates a much higher capacitance and lithium storage capacity of 256 F g−1 and 590 mAh g−1 compared to commercial activated carbons and graphite, respectively. Meanwhile, the enhanced mass diffusion/transfer endows the obtained HPC with superior high rate performance.

Abstract:Structural hierarchy plays an important role in the biological world and for functional materials with optimized properties and high efficiency. As promising candidates for various energy storage systems, hierarchical porous carbon/graphene materials have been intensively investigated over the past decades, while the favorable regulation of their hierarchical porosity remains a challenge. Herein, porous CaO serves as both the catalyst and template for a versatile chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of hierarchical porous graphene. The as-fabricated material exhibits abundant microsized in-plane vacancies, mesosized wrinkled pores, and macrosized strutted cavities, thereby contributing to a strong surface entrapment, short ion diffusion pathways, rapid mass transport, low interfacial resistance, and robust framework. It is demonstrated as a favorable scaffold for lithium-sulfur battery cathodes with superior rate capability, high coulombic efficiency, and excellent stability. A high capacity of 357 (656 ) is manifested at the current rate of 5.0 C, exhibiting a 74% retention of the capacity at 0.1 C. The first use of CaO-templated CVD growth of graphene reported herein opens up new perspectives on the effective fabrication of hierarchical porous graphene materials on metal oxide catalysts with promising applications in energy storage, catalysis, adsorption, drug delivery, and so on.
