Abstract:In this paper, a series of cobalt catalysts supported on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets with the loading of 5, 15 and 30 wt-% were provided by the impregnation method. The activity of the prepared catalysts is evaluated in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The prepared catalysts were carefully characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption, hydrogen chemisorption, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectro-scopy, Raman spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction, transmission electron microscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy techniques to confirm that cobalt particles were greatly dispersed on the rGO nanosheets. The results showed that with increasing the cobalt loading on the rGO support, the carbon defects are increased and as a consequence, the reduction of cobalt is decreased. The FTS activity results showed that the cobalt-time yield and turnover frequency passed from a maximum for catalyst with the Co0 average particle size of 15 nm due to the synergetic effect of cobalt reducibility and particle size. The products selectivity results indicated that the methane selectivity decreases, whereas the C5+ selectivity raises with the increasing of the cobalt particle size, which can be explained by chain propagation in the primary chain growth reactions.

Abstract:The performance of carbon-supported cobalt catalysts was compared with that of Co/gamma-Al2O3 reference catalysts for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reaction. The carbon support (CS) was prepared using a hydrothermal method that formed mostly spherical similar to 300-800 nm carbons that were first carbonized at 900 degrees C and then partially graphitized at 1900 degrees C. The FTS study was conducted using a continuously stirred tank reactor, and the cobalt catalysts were promoted with Pt (0.2% Pt-10% Co) to facilitate the reduction of cobalt oxides. Catalysts were prepared by an evaporative method (Co/CS-IWI) and by a chemical vapor deposition technique (Co/CS-CVD). The CVD technique led to a higher CO conversion (26.5%) relative to the conventional evaporative (IWI) method (7.4%) at the same temperature (220 degrees C) and space velocity (1.5 NL/g(cat)h). Remarkably, the Co/CS-CVD displayed a high oxygenate selectivity (similar to 10%) in comparison with cobalt alumina catalysts (i.e., including one having similar Pt and Co loadings, as well as a conventional cobalt alumina catalyst with a higher Co loading of 25% Co) at similar conversion levels. The difference in the CO conversion on a per gram catalyst basis observed between Co/CS-IWI and Co/CS-CVD catalysts was due to the smaller average Co particle size and more uniform distribution resulting from the CVD method.

Abstract:Background: The design and synthesis of catalysts with high stability, activity and selectivity in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) have been attracting extensive research attention. Maintaining high catalytic stability and activity is the best strategy for improving the catalyst efficiency and economic benefits. Methods: In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-coated SBA-15 was utilised as a support material to prepare cobalt-based FTS catalysts. The catalysts coated with g-C3N4 were studied via TEM, XPS, XRD, H2-TPR, TG, N2 adsorption-desorption, and tested in a fixed-bed reactor. Significant findings: The catalysts coated with g-C3N4 were considerably more stable than the Co/SBA-15 catalyst without g-C3N4 coating during a 100 h test period. Furthermore, the CO-conversion performance of the Co/SBA15 catalyst decreased continuously. Notably, the activity of the Co/SBA-15@0.5C3N4 catalyst with a low g-C3N4 loading was higher than that of the Co/SBA-15@1C3N4 catalyst with a relatively high g-C3N4 loading. g-C3N4 can significantly strengthen the interaction between the cobalt species and the support, thereby increasing the catalyst stability. Therefore, a highly stable catalyst with good activity can be achieved by employing a small amount of g-C3N4 for surface modification. The results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for preparing highly stable, cobalt-based catalysts with good activity.

Abstract:Converting syngas to hydrocarbons at much lower temperature with high efficiencies, namely aqueous-phase Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, has great potentials. In this article, we synthesized aqueous-stable cobalt nanoparticles for the reaction. The catalyst has an activity of 7.4 × 10−7 molCO gCo−1 s−1 and C5+ selectivity of 40%, which is the best result in cobalt-catalyzed aqueous-phase Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The catalyst is recyclable after reaction. We also characterized the catalyst by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and in-situ infrared observation to study the catalyst reconstruction process and boron contamination.

Abstract:Carbon aerogel was synthesized through an ambient pressure drying route by polymerization of a resorcinol‐formaldehyde precursor and introduced as a new carbon support in Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The investigated variable was the synthesis method of cobalt catalysts, which demonstrated a significant effect on the morphology, reducibility, catalytic activity, and selectivity in FTS. Carbon aerogel (CA) as a novel catalyst support in Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis (FTS) was synthesized by polymerization of a resorcinol‐formaldehyde (RF) precursor through an ambient pressure drying route. The cobalt‐doped CA was synthesized by three main strategies: (a) impregnation of the metal precursor on the CA (Co‐CA‐I), (b) carbonization of cobalt‐doped organic RF aerogel (Co‐CA‐II), and (c) addition of the cobalt precursor to the RF mixture (Co‐CA‐III). The pores and cobalt particle size increased in the order of Co‐CA‐I > Co‐CA‐II > Co‐CA‐III and cobalt particles wrapped between the graphite layers when cobalt was added to the RF mixture. The CA as the catalyst support presented high CO conversion and high stability under FTS conditions. The CH4 selectivity increased by reducing the size of the cobalt particles. Hydrogen spillover from the support to metallic particles was observed in the case of Co‐CA‐I and Co‐CA‐III catalysts. This phenomenon improved the reducibility and also resulted in higher hydrogenated products being produced.

Abstract:The influence of pore texture and nitrogen species of the carbon support for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was investigated using well-defined catalysts derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Two typical MOFs were employed in the carbonization process to prepare the target catalysts, i.e. nitrogen-rich ZIF-67 and nitrogen-free Co-MOF-74. The Co-MOF-74-derived nanocomposite (Co@C) showed a carbon monoxide (CO) conversion of 30%, whereas the ZIF-67-derived nanocomposite (Co@NC) exhibited a CO conversion of 10%. The nitrogen-free Co@C composite showed 65% selectivity for long-chain hydrocarbons (C-5(+)) and 10% selectivity for short-chain hydrocarbons (C-2-C-4) after 100 h on stream; on the other hand, the Co@NC composite showed 31% selectivity for C-5(+) products and 37% selectivity for short-chain hydrocarbons (C-2-C-4) after 100 h on stream. The excellent CO conversion was attributed to the large pore size of the carbon support, which facilitates the diffusion of the hydrocarbons. The high C-2-C-4 selectivity originates from the influence of nitrogen species in the carbon support. This study is expected to open a new avenue for the design of new catalysts for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with high activity and superior selectivity via choosing suitable MOFs precursors.
Effect of Cobalt Catalyst Confinement in Carbon Nanotubes Support on Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Performance

Abstract:Pre-treating the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) support by refluxing in 35 vol% nitric acid followed by heating at the temperature of 600 to 900 °C resulted in the formation of defects on the CNTs. Increasing the temperature of the pre-treatment of the CNTs from 600 °C to 900 °C, enhanced the fraction of cobalt-oxide nanoparticles encapsulated in the channels of CNTs from 31% to 70%. The performance of Co/CNTs in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) was evaluated in a fixed-bed micro-reactor at a temperature of 240 °C and a pressure of 2.0 MPa. The highest CO conversion obtained over Co/CNTs.A.900 was 59% and it dropped by ~3% after 130 h of time-on-stream. However, maximum CO conversion using Co/CNTs.A.600 catalysts was 28% and it decreased rapidly by about 54% after 130 h of time-on-stream. These findings show that the combined acid and thermal pre-treatment of CNTs support at 900 °C has improved the stability and activity of the Co/CNTs catalyst in FTS.

Abstract:Silica network-encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles with an adjustable pore structure as model Fischer–Tropsch synthesis catalysts were successfully prepared. The well-developed shell pore structure of the core–shell catalyst is of great importance for reducing the selectivity of methane, increasing the selectivity of heavy hydrocarbons, and the probability of carbon chain growth. Benefiting from its uniform distribution of cobalt particles and 3D open hierarchical porous shell features, Co@H-mSiO 2 catalysts exhibited excellent stability and activity, achieving up to 61.4% selectivity of C 5 –C 20 hydrocarbon products at 6 SL h −1 g −1 , 220 °C and 1.0 MPa.

Abstract:Co/NGA catalysts were one-step hydrothermal synthesized during the construction of three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel (NGA). The structure and properties of the catalysts were characterized by TGA, Raman, FTIR, XRD,TEM, SEM, XPS and H-2-TPR, and their catalytic performance was tested by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reaction. Characterization and reaction results showed that higher cobalt dispersion was found on the catalyst with higher cobalt loading, and majority of cobalt species in the freeze-dried samples was fcc phase Co degrees. Excessive cross linking originated by high Co2+ concentration during the construction of 3D NGA led to the restraint of mass transfer of reactants to cobalt active sites, and therefore, lower FTS activity was observed on the catalysts with higher cobalt loadings. The fcc phase Co degrees in fresh Co/NGA catalysts was transformed in to hcp phase Co degrees during FTS reaction, and as a result, catalytic activity was increased with increasing time on stream.
Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis: ZIF-8@ZIF-67-Derived Cobalt Nanoparticle-Embedded Nanocage Catalysts

Abstract:The preparation of highly active and stable catalysts for syngas conversion is a major challenge for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Herein, we report a strategy to prepare a highly dispersed Co-embedded porous carbon nanocage (CoPCN) structure derived from a core–shell metal–organic framework (MOF) precursor. High Co loading (over wt 30%) is achieved while maintaining an optimal dispersion and particle size of the active Co phase when a is pyrolyzed at 920 °C. Besides, the porous channels and hollow structures of the CoPCN strengthen the diffusion of reactants and the hydrocarbon product, enhancing the C5+ selectivity and CO conversion. The CoPCN shows high stability in FTS with a CO conversion of 18.3%, 80.2% selectivity for long-chain hydrocarbons (C5+), and 8.9% selectivity for short-chain hydrocarbons (C2–C4) after 100 h time on stream. Compared with other MOF-derived FTS catalysts, CoPCN-920 can achieve higher C5+ selectivity at a lower reaction temperature. Abstract:This review analyzes the literature from the 80's to the beginning of 2020 and covers the use of carbon materials as supports for cobalt-based catalysts used in the Fischer Tropsch reaction. The article is composed of two sections. The first one details the reactivity of carbon supported cobalt catalysts with a particular focus on: i) reaction mechanisms and conditions, ii) effect of cobalt particle size, iii) confinement effects, iv) hydrogen spillover, and v) deactivation mechanisms. In the second part, the different methods of Co/C catalyst preparation are presented, and the influence of several parameters such as the type of supports and its functionalization, the metal loading or the catalyst activation on the catalytic performances is discussed. This work also provides some perspectives in the field.
Lignin-Based Fabrication of Co@C Core–Shell Nanoparticles As Efficient Catalyst for Selective Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis of C5+ Compounds

Abstract:Novel Co@C core-shell nanoparticles were prepared by a straightforward low-temperature carbonization process. The industrially available lignin was used as a low-cost biorenewable carbon source for the first time. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and Raman spectrum. The results showed that the synthesized Co@C catalysts had a well-defined core-shell structure with a moderate degree of graphitization, and the metal Co nanoparticles with the sizes of 20-150 nm were wrapped by several layers of graphitic carbon. This unique core-shell structure is useful in a Fischer-Tropsch reaction since it can provide high adsorption space and the graphite carbon layer defects are beneficial for H-2 dissociative adsorption. Furthermore, the shell of graphitic carbon layers could restrict the aggregation of the cobalt nanoparticles during the activation and reaction processes. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis results showed that the Co@C core-shell catalysts had a high catalytic performance with the highest C5+ selectivity up to 56.8%, which is much higher compared with the traditional Co/AC catalyst (46.2%).
The support effect on the performance of a MOF-derived Co-based nano-catalyst in Fischer Tropsch synthesis

Abstract:The catalyst plays a central role in the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) process, and the choice of catalyst support significantly impacts FTS catalyst performance by enhancing its attributes. In this study, the effects of utilizing various metal oxides-CeO 2 , ZrO 2 , and TiO 2 -on a cobalt-based FTS nanocatalyst are investigated by evaluating the catalyst's reducibility, stability, syngas chemisorption, intermediate species spillover, charge transfer, and metal–support interaction (MSI). This evaluation is conducted both theoretically and experimentally through diverse characterization tests and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Characterization tests reveal that the ceria-supported catalyst (Ceria Nano Catalyst, CNC) demonstrates the highest reducibility, stability, CO chemisorption, and spillover, while the zirconia-supported catalyst (Zirconia Nano Catalyst, ZNC) exhibits the highest hydrogen chemisorption and spillover. The MD simulation results align well with these findings; for instance, ZNC has the lowest hydrogen adsorption enthalpy (Δ H Ads. ), whereas CNC has the lowest Δ H Ads. for CO. Additionally, MD simulations indicate that the titania-supported catalyst (Titania Nano Catalyst, TNC) possesses the highest MSI value, closely resembling that of ZNC, albeit with a minor difference. The TNC catalyst's performance in other tests is also similar to that of ZNC. Finally, FTS performance tests illustrate that the ZNC catalyst achieves the highest CO conversion at 88.1%, while the CNC catalyst presents the lowest CO conversion at 82.2%. Notably, the CNC catalyst showcases the highest durability, with only a 4.4% loss in CO conversion and an 8.55% loss in C 5+ yield after 192 h of operation.

Carbon coated cobalt catalysts for direct synthesis of middle n-alkanes from syngas

Abstract:A series of carbon coated core–shell cobalt catalysts with different thickness of shell were easily prepared by C 2 H 2 dissociation. The characterization results showed that dissociation temperature plays an important role in determining the thickness of carbon shell. There were two kinds of carbon species on the surface of coated catalysts: deposited carbon and graphitic carbon. Only deposited carbon could be obtained during lower temperature coating, while both deposited carbon and graphitic carbon were found during higher temperature coating. Deposited carbon blocked the active sites, while graphitic carbon didn't block the active sites but only limited the diffusion of the products. The coated catalyst possessed better dispersion and reduction, and retains more elemental Co after surface passivation. The performance test results of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (T = 220 °C) indicated that: (1) the core–shell catalyst without reduction still showed high activity, and showed high selectivity of C 5 ∼ C 12 (48.5%); (2) after reduction, it had the same activity as the uncoated catalyst, and showed high selectivity of C 13 ∼ C 20 (41.7%), and high selectivity of C 5 ∼ C 20 (66.9%); (3) more than 90% of the products were n-alkanes.

Abstract:Herein, we report the high Fischer–Tropsch synthesis performance of the Co-based catalysts supported on graphitized ordered mesoporous carbon (GMC-900) by using a facile strategy. Compared with CMK-3 and active carbon (AC), the obtained GMC-900 by using pollution-free soybean oil as a carbon source exhibited enhanced catalytic performance after loading Co species due to its highly crystallized graphitic structure and uniform dispersion of CoO. As a result, Co/GMC-900 was an effective catalyst with the maximum C 5+ selectivity of 52.6%, which much outperformed Co/CMK-3 and Co/AC. This research provides an approach to produce advanced Co-based catalysts with satisfactory performance for efficient Fischer–Tropsch synthesis.

Abstract:Direct conversion of carbon monoxide into fuel through Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is economically and environmentally beneficial as an alternative clean energy source. However, the activity and product selectivity need further investigation. In this work, a Co-MOF-71 (Co(1,4-BDC) (DMF)) was prepared solvothermally and pyrolyzed under nitrogen flow at low pyrolysis temperature to obtain a highly mesoporous Co@C-500 catalyst. The obtained catalyst exhibits high cobalt loading (53 wt%), high reducibility, optimum nanoparticle size (10.49 nm), and well-dispersed active sites. The catalytic activity of the catalyst was tested under different reaction conditions using a stainless steel fixed-bed reactor. The optimal performance showed a high CO conversion (82.7%), high C5+ selectivity (82.77%) with C5–C12 gasoline range hydrocarbons (71.9%), low C2–C4 selectivity (13%), and low methane selectivity (3.7%). Furthermore, the catalyst has a high C5+ yield of 68%, with the gasoline fraction (C5–C12) being the main product (59.1% yield). The catalyst shows superior FTS performance compared with other reported Co-containing catalysts, especially after being tested for more than 120 h without deactivation. Therefore, this work could contribute to the design of high-efficiency MOF-derived Co-FTS catalysts that could be used in the production of green and sustainable transportation fuel (gasoline).Graphical Abstract

Abstract:It is highly desirable but challenging to accelerate the dissociative adsorption of CO and lower the energy barriers of C-C coupling in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), both of which are prerequisite for high productivities of long-chain hydrocarbons. Herein, we report the fabrication of N-doped carbon nanotubes assembled hollow polyhedrons with embedded hollow Co (H-Co) nanoparticles (NPs) (H-Co@NCNHP) for highly efficient FTS. H-Co@NCNHP affords an extremely high C5+ space time yield of 1.67 x 10(-5) mol g(cat)(-1) s(-1), outperforming most of Co-based catalysts reported to date. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that, as compared with solid Co NPs with symmetric arrangement of d-orbital electrons, H-Co NPs induce the electron rearrangement of d orbitals (especially d(z2)) toward the Fermi level, promoting the d-2 pi* /p coupling between Co active sites and adsorbed CO/intermediates.

Abstract:Supported metal catalysts have found numerous applications in many catalytic reactions, including Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis. Metal dispersion, metal reducibility, catalytic performance, and catalyst stability are usually strongly affected by the interaction of the active phase and support. A strong metal–support interaction has been previously reported for titania-supported catalysts. In this work, a series of titania-supported cobalt catalysts promoted via the deposition of a layer of carbon nitride were prepared, characterized, and tested in FT synthesis. The catalytic performance of freshly activated catalysts was an interplay of cobalt dispersion and reducibility. The deposition of carbon nitride on the surface of titania resulted in a noticeable enhancement of cobalt dispersion, whereas it hindered cobalt reducibility to some extent. The nonpromoted cobalt catalysts exhibited a noticeable deactivation in FT synthesis. The catalyst deactivation was due to the progressive encapsulation of the cobalt active phase by TiO2 during the reaction. A carbon nitride layer on the TiO2 surface stabilized cobalt nanoparticles and prevented the encapsulation of active sites by the TiO2 species. The stability was significantly enhanced on all titania-supported cobalt catalysts promoted with carbon nitride.

Abstract:Highly dispersed Co nanoparticles with proper interaction with mesoporous support are benefit for the suppression of self-aggregation, which enhances its Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTs) activity. However, construct such Co based supported catalysts with high activity and stability in FTs by conventional mesoporous support, especially the common used mesoporous SiO2, has proven challenging due to their undesirable hydrothermal stability and poor reducibility. Herein, we developed a unique core@double-shell Co@SiO2@C structure with optimized interface of the mesoporous catalyst by introducing graphitic carbon layer which can weaken the interaction between metallic Co and silica. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, together with Nitrogen adsorption-desorption characterization result, proved the well-defined core@double-shell structure of graphitic carbon modified catalyst. The Co@SiO2@C-2 material produced after optimizing the calcination temperature to 600°C process large surface area and pore volume, and show higher CO conversion (62.2%) and C5+ selectivity (62.2%) than Co3O4@SiO2 in a period of 100h. The significant improvement in the FTS performance of Co@SiO2@C is not only attributed to a good synergistic effect by a combination of the Co dispersion and reducibility. The unique core@double-shell structure with graphitic carbon modified interior pore-walls also contributes to the formation of heavy hydrocarbon, as well as the protecting with the metallic Co particles away from oxidation and aggregation.
