Abstract:Simple modification by thermal treatment is the commonly used approach to enhance the performance of electrospun fibers. This was investigated in the thermal treatment of polybenzoxazine (PBz) fibers blended with sulfur copolymers (SDIB) to determine the effect of varying treatment conditions on the microstructure and morphology of PBz fibers with the effect of incorporating sulfur functional groups on resulting properties. Mechanical properties of PBz are greatly improved by thermally-induced ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the oxazine ring. Blending with sulfur copolymers (SDIB) could have beneficial effects on endowed features on fibers but could also affect the resulting properties of SDIB-blended PBz fibers during crosslinking reactions. Fiber mats were fabricated by electrospinning of PBz (10 wt%) blended with SDIB (10 wt%). Physical modification with varying conditions of sequential thermal treatment were evaluated and compared to the conditions applied on pristine PBz fibers. Changes in morphology and microstructure of fibers after modification were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) while elemental compositions were identified after varying the conditions of thermal treatment. Adjustment of treatment conditions using two-step temperature sequential thermal treatment with higher temperatures of 160 °C and 240 °C showed significant changes in microstructure and morphology of fibers. Lower temperatures of 120 °C and 160 °C exhibited microstructure and morphology of fibers which affected the fiber diameter and fiber networks. Cross-sectional SEM images also confirmed the adversed effect of high-temperature treatment conditions on fibrous structures while low-temperature treatment retained the fibrous structures with more compact and stiff fiber networks. SDIB-blended PBz fibers were also evaluated by TGA and DSC to correlate the changes in structure and morphology with the thermal stability and integrity of blended SDIB/PBz fibers as compared to pristine PBz with the effect of change in treatment conditions. Fiber strength indicated slower weight loss for blended fibers and higher onset temperature of degradation which resulted in more thermally stable fibers.

Abstract:This study demonstrated the processability of sulfur copolymers (SDIB) into polymer blend with polybenzoxazines (PBz) and their compatibility with the electrospinning process. Synthesis of SDIB was conducted via inverse vulcanization using elemental sulfur (S8). Polymer blends produced by simply mixing with varying concentration of SDIB (5 and 10 wt%) and fixed concentration of PBz (10 wt%) exhibited homogeneity and a single-phase structure capable of forming nanofibers. Nanofiber mats were characterized to determine the blending effect on the microstructure and final properties. Fiber diameter increased and exhibited non-uniform, broader fiber diameter distribution with increased SDIB. Microstructures of mats based on SEM images showed the occurrence of partial aggregation and conglutination with each fiber. Incorporation of SDIB were confirmed from EDX which was in agreement with the amount of SDIB relative to the sulfur peak in the spectra. Spectroscopy further confirmed that SDIB did not affect the chemistry of PBz but the presence of special interaction benefited miscibility. Two distinct glass transition temperatures of 97 °C and 280 °C indicated that new material was produced from the blend while the water contact angle of the fibers was reduced from 130° to 82° which became quite hydrophilic. Blending of SDIB with component polymer proved that its processability can be further explored for optimal spinnability of nanofibers for desired applications.

Abstract:Anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants with varying concentrations (0.2–1.2%) were introduced to neutralize beads on lignin nanofibers by decreasing the surface tension of spinning dopes. The surfactants used in this work were sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), N,N,N-trimethyl-1-dodecanaminium bromide (DTAB), and Triton X-100 (TX-100). The effects of viscosity, rheological properties, surface tension, and conductivity of the solutions on the morphology and physicochemical performances of fibers were investigated. As expected, the presence of certain amounts of surfactants eliminated the beads and resulted in the formation of smooth and bead-free fibers with small diameters. Furthermore, the gravimetric capacitance of the carbon mat with 1% SDS was slightly improved from 66.3 to 80.7 F g–1. The results suggested that the surfactants benefit from the electrospinning of lignin and allow for the control over nanofiber morphology without compromising their performance as supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Suspension electrospinning of a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) latex coupled with photo-induced crosslinking in ambient conditions is proposed as a rapid method to prepare ultrafine shape-stable rubber fibrous membranes. Polyethylene oxide (PEO) is used as template polymer and can eventually be removed from the nanostructured membrane by a simple water treatment. A multifunctional thiol crosslinker and an appropriate photo-initiating system are added to the latex to allow the fast and efficient photo-induced crosslinking of the nanofibers, based on thiol addition to the SBR double bonds, as demonstrated by real-time Infrared spectroscopy analyses. It is proved that by varying the PEO template polymer and the thiol crosslinker content, a fine control of the chemical composition, morphology, water solubility, and thermal properties of the nanofibrous membranes is ensured. Moreover, comparable mechanical properties to those of fibrous membranes produced by conventional electrospinning of organic solvent-based solutions are obtained, clearly showing the attractiveness of the present method, especially in terms of process sustainability.

Abstract:In order to study the effect of surfactant addition on solution properties and products, polystyrene ( PS ) ultrafine fibers were prepared by electrospinning method with polystyrene ( PS) as solute and N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent.Ionic surfactant cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and nonionic surfactant Tween 20 were added to the solution, and the effects of these two surfactants on the viscosity, surface tension, conductivity of solution, diameter and morphology of electrospun fabrics were researched.The results show that adding surfactants can effectively increase the conductivity of solution.The effect of ionic surfactants is far greater than that of nonionic surfactantns.PS/DMF solution with ionic surfactant can reduce the surface tension of the solution, which is propitious to produce thinner ultrafine fibers.Little effect on the viscosity of the solution is made by adding surfactants.In all, surfactants can effectively reduce the diameter of ultrafine fiber and inhibit the formation of "beads"structure in fiber products.

Abstract:The present work proposes a versatile and efficient method to fabricate rubber nanofiber membranes with a controlled morphology and tailored functionality, based on the application of photoinduced thiol-ene cross-linking reactions to electrospun mats. Besides preventing the polymer cold flow and freezing the structure obtained by electrospinning, the photocuring step finely controls the morphology of the nanofiber mats, in terms of the fiber diameter up to the nanometer range and of the membrane porosity. Nanofiber membranes are also made chemically resistant, while retaining their flexibility. Finally, the proposed approach allows imparting specific functionalities to the rubber nanofibers: the type and concentration of the functional groups can be precisely tuned by changing process parameters (i.e., thiol/ene stoichiometric ratio and irradiation dose). Active chemical groups that remain available on the surface of the nanofibers can be used for further material modifications, as here proven by two target reactions. This key result is also demonstrated with electrospun membranes embedded into a microfluidic chip, opening the way to advanced functional flexible devices.

Abstract:The synthesis of PPSS as sizing agents and the improvement on the high‐temperature resistance and mechanical properties of carbon fibers. Polyphenylene sulfide sulfone (PPSS) was synthesized by one‐step method and utilized as a sizing agent for carbon fibers. The effects of various monomer ratios, reaction time, and reaction temperature were investigated on the molecular weight of PPSS. The thermal analysis revealed that the product PPSS exhibited a glass transition temperature exceeding 215.5°C, indicating exceptional thermal stability. After PPSS sizing treatment, the grooves on the surface of carbon fibers were filled, resulting in a substantial enhancement of the microinterface properties. The surface energy was increased by 8.2%, while the maximum weight loss temperature was 27.8% higher than that of the commercial carbon fiber. The tensile strength of the carbon fiber after heat treatment reached 2196 MPa, representing a 45.9% increase over that of the commercial carbon fiber.

Abstract:Mainchain-type polybenzoxazines (PBz) are self-crosslinkable polymers possessing high flexibility of molecular designs and property adjustments. The corresponding crosslinked PBz in different forms, such as films, porous membranes, electrospun fiber mats, have been prepared for various applications. This work aims on functionalization of PBz with amide groups and Meldrum's acid moieties, to bring hydrogen bonding interaction and additional covalent crosslinks to the crosslinked PBz. A bisphenol derivative possessing both MA and amide groups (MA/Am-BP) is synthesized from a biomass-based precursor of 3,4-dihydrocoumarine. MA/Am-BP is utilized as a monomer, together with 4,4′-oxydianiline and formaldehyde, for preparation of amide- and Meldrum's acid-functionalized polybenzoxazine (MA/Am-PBz) and the corresponding crosslinked polybenzoxazine (CR_MA/Am-PBz). The benzoxazine- and Meldrum's acid-involved crosslinking reactions have been investigated with temperature-dependent Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. CR_MA/Am-PBz has demonstrated film formability and flexibility. In addition to the attractive thermal properties, including a thermal stability of 340 °C, a char yield of 52 wt% at 800 °C, a storage modulus of 1.44 GPa at 50 °C, and a T g of 295 °C, CR_MA/Am-PBz also exhibits a high tensile strength of 160 MPa, which is superior over the data reported to crosslinked polybenzoxazine films.

Abstract:Functional core-shell structured composite mats were prepared by means of electrospinning two types of polymer solutions in a coaxial system. A series of core-shell structured nanofiber with various concentrations of a polyacrylonitrile (PAN, shell) and a polyurethane (PU, core) were investigated. By means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and tensile mechanical test, the resultant nanofibers were characterized. In addition, water vapour transmission rate (WVT) and pliability of the resulting nonwoven mats were measured. The results of this study is presented herein.

Abstract:Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyurethane (PU) blend nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning blend solutions of PAN and PU in N,N-dimethylformamide. The morphology, properties and structure of electrospun PAN/PAN nanofibers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Thermo gravimetric analyses (TGA), mechanical properties measurement and differential scanning- calorimetry (DSC). FT-IR indicated that intermolecular interactions are formed between PAN and PU and the SEM images demonstrated that point-bonded structures in the fiber mats rose with increasing PU composition. Furthermore, the elongation and tensile strength of the PAN/PU blend nanofiber mats were significantly increased compared with PAN due to the point-bonded structures.

Abstract:In this study, composite nanofibers of polyaniline doped with dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (PANI-DBSA) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) were prepared via an electrospinning process. The surface morphology, thermal properties and crystal structure of PAN/PANI-DBSA nanofibers are characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Thermo gravimetric analyses (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). SEM images showed that the morphology and diameter of the nanofibers were affected by the weight ratio of blend solution. FT-IR, DSC and TGA demonstrated that there were strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the molecules of PAN and PANI-DBSA.

Abstract:This work reports the use of sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ), and metformin (MET) as pore-inducers in poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)/polylactic acid (PLA)-based electrospun microfibers. SEM analysis confirmed the formation of homogeneous PBAT/PLA fibers. However, the incorporation of the salt molecules led to the formation of beads. The salts also increased the amorphous character of the fibers, but they did not affect their thermal stability. All salts but CaCl 2 increased the surface area of the fibers. Nevertheless, they were not efficient in creating fibers with high surface areas, especially because the surface areas observed were lower than 2 m2 g -1 . The salts improved the mechanical performance of the fibers and, in terms of adsorption isotherms, all matrices but PBAT/PLA-CaCl 2 displayed complex multilayer adsorption profiles.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to present the poly(caprolactone) (PCL) functionalization by the covalent grafting of poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) on electrospun scaffolds using the "grafting from" technique and evaluate the effect of the coating and surface wettability on the biological response. The "grafting from" technique required energy (thermal or UV) to induce the decomposition of the PCL (hydro)peroxides and generate radicals able to initiate the polymerization of NaSS. In addition, UV irradiation was used to initiate the radical polymerization of NaSS directly from the surface (UV direct "grafting from"). The interest of these two techniques is their easiness, the reduction of the number of process steps, and its applicability to the industry. The selected parameters allow controlling the grafting rate (i.e., degree of functionalization). The aim of the study was to compare two covalent grafting in terms of surface functionalization and hydrophilicity and their effect on the in vitro biological responses of fibroblasts. The achieved results showed the influence of the sulfonate functional groups on the cell response. In addition, outcomes highlighted that the UV direct "grafting from" method allows to moderate the amount of sulfonate groups and the surface hydrophilicity presents a considerable interest for covalently immobilizing bioactive polymers onto electrospun scaffolds designed for tissue engineering applications using efficient post-electrospinning chemical modification.

Abstract:Polyacrylonitrile-based nanofibers prepared by electrospinning have attracted much attention in recent years for both fundamental research and industry. Those nanofibers with specific functions are reviewed in this paper. PAN-based nanofibers modified with carbon nanotube or biomacromolecules are suitable carriers for enzyme immobilization. PAN-based nanofibers functionalized with sugar moieties can be prepared by electrospinning process combining copolymerization or surface immobilization. These glycosylated nanofibers are very useful in protein isolation. Luminescent nanofibers can be electrospun from acrylonitrile-based copolymers with porphyrin pendants. The nanofibers may act as a support well for catalysis.
Effect of Experimental Parameters on Morphological, Mechanical and Hydrophobic Properties of Electrospun Polystyrene Fibers

Abstract:Polystyrene (PS) dissolved in a mixture of N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and/or tetrahydrofuran (THF) was electrospun to prepare fibers with sub-micron diameters. The effects of electrospinning parameters, including solvent combinations, polymer concentrations, applied voltage on fiber morphology, as well as tensile and hydrophobic properties of the fiber mats were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of electrospun fibers (23% w/v PS solution with applied voltage of 15 kV) showed that a new type of fiber with double-strand morphology was formed when the mass ratio of DMF and THF was 50/50 and 25/75. The tensile strength of the PS fiber film was 1.5 MPa, indicating strong reinforcement from double-strand fibers. Bead-free fibers were obtained by electrospinning 40% (w/v) PS/DMF solution at an applied voltage of 15 kV. Notably, when the ratio of DMF and THF was 100/0, the maximum contact angle (CA) value of the electrospun PS films produced at 15 kV was 148°.

Abstract:Nanoporous fibers are used to induce the network structure and enhance the mechanical properties of styrene‐butadiene‐styrene asphalt. Electrospinning is used to control the interface structure of macro‐polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers, and nano‐porous fibers (E‐PAN) which possess enhanced adhesion and interface effects. Herein, E‐PAN was prepared via electrospinning and was in turn incorporated into styrene‐butadiene‐styrene (SBS) asphalt to prepare PAN modified asphalt. The effect of E‐PAN addition on the performance of modified asphalt was explored. Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and AFM tests confirmed that E‐PAN exhibited a highly rough nano‐porous skeleton without any prominent structural damage during the preparation process. The three major indexes, dynamic shearing rheometer, MSCR, rotational viscosity, and thermogravimetric analysis tests results showed that E‐PAN modified asphalt exhibited excellent viscoelasticity, anti‐rutting and anti‐fatigue properties and thermal stability (THRI of 192.7°C). FT‐IR test of the four components of modified asphalt confirmed that E‐PAN chemically crosslinked with the saturates and aromatics in the base asphalt and SBS, which resulted in a uniform and well‐developed network structure. In addition, Brauner‐Emmett‐Teller and fluorescence microscopy results confirmed that E‐PAN got fully swollen in a behavior similar to that of SBS in the base asphalt, and hence helped SBS to form an excellent network structure in asphalt. E‐PAN played the important role of stress buffer, mutual entanglement, and good thermal insulation inside the asphalt.

Abstract:Due to their excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance, Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers are applied as one of most potential reinforcement in resin matrix composite. However, the poor adhesion with resin limits their application in advanced composite materials. In this study, PBO fibers were first modified by direct fluorination to improve the interface adhesion between fibers and resin. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were applied to characterize the change of chemical structure and surface topography of fluorinated fibers. The results show that polar groups of C-F and -COOH are produced and surface roughness is enhanced, which increases the interface bonding strength of PBO fibers/epoxy by 48%. The fluorination reaction mechanism of PBO fibers is investigated on the basis of chemical structure change. It's suggested that oxazole ring reacts with fluorine gas preferentially over benzene ring, and addition reaction dominates when fluorine reacts with benzene ring.

Abstract:This article presents research on the influence of a coupling agent -methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MEMO) and cross-linking agent dicumyl peroxide (DCP) on thermal and nanomechanical properties of neat and waste polyethylene (WPE) as well as their blend. Modification of nanosilica by silanization was performed under supercritical conditions of carbon dioxide-ethanol mixture. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), indentation as well as scratch testing at nanoscale were employed for characterization of the polymer matrix with unmodified and modified nano-SiO2 particles. Low amounts of the peroxide and silanized nano-SiO2 particles in the composite formulation significantly improved thermal and tribo-mechanical behavior at nanoscale. POLYM.
