Abstract:Melt-spinning and stretching (MS-S) method was proposed for preparing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes with excellent mechanical properties. The morphology and properties of PVDF fibers and membranes were investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), field emission scanning electron microscope, mercury porosimeter, and tensile experiment. SAXS results indicated that the stacked lamellar structure aligned normal to the fiber axis was separated and deformed when the fibers were strained, and the long period of the strained fibers increased accordingly. Factors affecting the membrane properties were mainly spin-draw ratio, annealing temperature, time, and stretching rate. Experimental results showed that the average pore size, porosity, and N-2 permeation of the membranes all increased with the increasing spin-draw ratios and annealing temperatures. Annealing the nascent PVDF hollow fibers at 145 degrees C for 12 h was suitable for attaining membranes with good performance. In addition, the amount and size of the micropores of the membrane increased obviously with stretching rate. Tensile experinlEnt indicated PVDF hollow fiber membranes made by MS-S process had excellent mechanical properties. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has been considered as a promising piezoelectric material for advanced sensing and energy storage systems because of its high dielectric constant and good electroactive response. Electrospinning is a straightforward, low cost, and scalable technology that can be used to create PVDF-based nanofibers with outstanding piezoelectric characteristics. Herein, we summarize the state-of-the-art progress on the use of filler doping and structural design to enhance the output performance of electrospun PVDF-based piezoelectric fiber films. We divide the fillers into single filler and double fillers and make comments on the effects of various dopant materials on the performance and the underlying mechanism of the PVDF-based piezoelectric fiber film. The effects of highly oriented structures, core-shell structures, and multilayer composite structures on the output properties of PVDF-based piezoelectric nanofibers are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the perspectives and opportunities for PVDF piezoelectric nanofibers in the fields of health care, environmental monitoring, and energy collection are also discussed.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is among the most attractive piezo-polymers due to its excellent piezoelectricity, lightweight, flexibility, high thermal stability, and chemical resistance. PVDF can exist under different forms of films, membranes, and (nano)fibers, and its piezoelectric property related to its β phase content makes it interesting for energy harvesters and wearable applications. Research investigation shows that PVDF in the form of nanofibers prepared by electrospinning has more flexibility and better air permeability, which make them more suitable for these types of applications. Electrospinning is an efficient technique that produces PVDF nanofibers with a high β phase fraction and crystallinity by aligning molecular dipoles (–CH2 and –CF2) along an applied voltage direction. Different nanofibers production techniques and more precisely the electrospinning method for producing PVDF nanofibers with optimal electrospinning parameters are the key focuses of this paper. This review article highlights recent studies to summarize the influence of electrospinning parameters such as process (voltage, distance, flow rate, and collector), solution (Mw, concentration, and solvent), and ambient (humidity and temperature) parameters to enhance the piezoelectric properties of PVDF nanofibers. In addition, recent development regarding the effect of adding nanoparticles in the structure of nanofibers on the improvement of the β phase is reviewed. Finally, different methods of measuring piezoelectric properties of PVDF nanofibrous membrane are discussed.

Abstract:In this manuscript, wet-electrospinning method was used to electrospin poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) into nanofibrous membranes from its dimethylformamide (DMF) solutions. Here a water bath was used as the coagulation bath to prevent the PVDF nanofiber re-melt, which occurred while solid collector was applied. On the other hand, to prevent PVDF nanofiber re-melt, laponite nanoclay was incorporated into PVDF solutions to improve the electrospinnability without using liquid coagulation bath as well as to enhance the physics properties of PVDF nanofibrous membranes. The results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that nanoclay platelets were well dispersed in fiber matrix. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical property test results indicated that both the thermal stability and mechanical strength of the PVDF electrospun membrane were improved through the incorporation of nanoclay in polymer fiber.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a significant polymer in the formation of nanofiber webs via the electrospinning technique. In this paper, three PVDF-wrinkled fiber webs with different molecular weights (M W s) (180000, 275000, and 530000) were generated via the electrospinning method by using tetrahydrofuran/N,N-dimethylformamide at the solvent ratio of 1:1 as a mixed solvent. The formation mechanism of the wrinkled electrospun PVDF fibers is demonstrated. Furthermore, the relationships between the M W and the surface structure, mechanical properties, crystalline phases, and piezoelectric properties of electrospun PVDF fibers are comprehensively investigated. The results reported that the surface structure, mechanical properties, crystalline phases, and piezoelectric properties of wrinkled electrospun PVDF fibers can be affected intensely by maneuvering the M W . We believe this study can be served as a good reference for the effect of M W on the morphology and properties of electrospun fibers.

Abstract:PVDF electrospun membranes were prepared by employing different mixtures of solvents and diverse electrospinning parameters. A comprehensive investigation was carried out, including morphology, nanofiber diameter, crystallinity, β-phase fraction, and piezoelectric response under external mechanical strain. It was demonstrated that by using low-toxicity DMSO as the solvent, PVDF membranes with good morphology (bead-free, smooth surface, and uniform nanofiber) can be obtained. All the fabricated membranes showed crystallinity and β-phase fraction above 48% and 80%, respectively; therefore, electrospinning is a good method for preparing PVDF membranes with the piezoelectric properties. Moreover, we considered a potential effect of the solvent properties and the electrospinning parameters on the final piezoelectric properties. When PVDF membranes with different β-phase fractions and crystallinity values are applied to make the piezoelectric transducers, various piezoelectric voltage outputs can be obtained. This paper provides an effective and efficient strategy for regulating the piezoelectric properties of PVDF electrospun membranes by controlling both solvent dipole moment and process parameters. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the influence of a solvent’s dipole moment on the piezoelectric properties of electrospun materials has been reported.

Abstract:Abstract Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fibrous membranes with fiber diameter from nanoscale to microscale were prepared by electrospinning. The structural parameters of PVDF fibrous membrane in terms of fiber diameter, pore size and its distribution, porosity or packing density, thickness, and areal weight were tested. The relationship between solution concentration and structural parameters of fibrous membrane was analyzed. The filtration performance of PVDF fibrous membrane in terms of air permeability and filtration efficiency was evaluated. The results demonstrated that the higher solution concentration led to a larger fiber diameter and higher areal weight of fibrous membrane. However, no regular change was found in thickness, porosity, or pore size of fibrous membrane under different solution concentrations. The air permeability and filtration efficiency of fibrous membrane had positive correlations with pore size. The experimental results of filtration efficiency were compared with the predicted values from current theoretical models based on single fiber filtration efficiency. However, the predicted values did not have a good agreement with experimental results since the fiber diameter was in nanoscale and the ratio of particle size to fiber diameter was much larger than the value that the theoretical model requires.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), a polymorphic material, has useful electro active properties such as piezo-, pyro-, and ferroelectric properties. The piezoelectric crystallization polymorph is the β-phase which has an all-trans (TTTT) conformation, i.e., all of its dipoles aligned in the same direction normal to the chain axis. Elongational deformation was applied to poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) / multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites. Its effect on the conversion of the α-phase crystals into the β-phase crystals and on the piezoelectric propertes was investigated. Elongational deformation of PVDF molecules made it easier for the CF2 groups to arrange themselves in the same conformation by reducing the steric hindrance. However, macro-deformation was dominant in the drawn films, though the interfacial interaction between the functional groups on the MWCNTs and the CF2 dipole of PVDF chains helped the conversion of α-phase. Uniform distribution of MWCNT in the electrospun films helps efficient charge accumulation at the interface between the MWCNTs and the matrix PVDF molecules. Deploarization effect occurred in the pressed film due to the excessive charge accumulation was not observed, resulting in the high conversion of α-phase into β-phase as well as the enhancement of remanent polarization and the mechanical displacement. Added MWCNT helps the film to be extended without rupturing.
Enhancement of PVDF Sensing Characteristics by Retooling the Near-Field Direct-Write Electrospinning System

Abstract:This research aimed to develop a direct-write near-field electrospinning system (DW-NFES) with three-axis positioning of controllable speed, torque and position to produce sizable and high-quality piezoelectric fibers for sensing purposes. Sensor devices with high electrical response signals were developed and tested. To achieve DW-NFES purpose, a servo motor controller was designed to develop a high response rate, accurate positioning, and stable mobile device through the calculation of bandwidth and system time delay. With this retooled system of DW-NFES, controllable and uniform size fibers in terms of diameters, stretching force, and interspaces can be obtained. Sensor devices can be made selectively without a complicated lithography process. The characteristics of this DW-NFES platform were featured by high response rate, accurate positioning, and stable movement to make fibers with high piezoelectric property. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used to explore and enhance their sensing quality through the platform. The parametric study of the process factors on piezoelectric sensing signals mainly included the concentration of electrospinning PVDF solution, high voltage electric field, and collection speed. Finally, the surface morphology and piezoelectric properties of the as-electrospun PVDF fibers were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and characterized by electrical response measurement techniques. The results showed that the fiber spinning speed of the DW-NFES system could be increased to ~125 from ~20 mm/s and the accuracy precision was improved to ~1 from ~50 μm, compared to conventional step motor system. The fiber diameter reached ~10 μm, and the electrospinning pitch reached to as small as ~10 μm. The piezoelectric output voltage of the electrospun fibers was increased ~28.6% from ~97.2 to ~125 mV; the current was increased ~27.6% from ~163 to ~208 nA, suggesting that the piezoelectric signals can be enhanced significantly by using this retooled system. Finally, an external control module (Arduino-MAGE) was introduced to control the PVDF piezoelectric fiber sensors integrated as a sensing array. The behavior of long-term sedentary patients can be successfully detected by this module system to prevent the patients from the bedsores.

Abstract:Coaxial core/shell electrospun nanofibers consisting of ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) and relaxor ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) are tailor-made with hierarchical structures to modulate their mechanical properties with respect to their constituents. Compared with two single and the other coaxial membranes prepared in the research, the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE membrane shows a more prominent mechanical anisotropy between revolving direction (RD) and cross direction (CD) associated with improved resistance to tensile stress for the crystallite phase stability and good strength-ductility balance. This is due to the better degree of core/shell-TrFE-CTFE nanofiber alignment and the crystalline/amorphous ratio. The coupling between terpolymer P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) and copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) is responsible for phase stabilization, comparing the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE with the pristine terpolymer. Moreover, an impressive collective deformation mechanism of a two-length scale in the core/shell composite structure is found. We apply in-situ synchrotron X-ray to resolve the two-length scale simultaneously by using the small-angle X-ray scattering to characterize the nanofibers and the wide-angle X-ray diffraction to identify the phase transformations. Our findings may serve as guidelines for the fabrication of the electrospun nanofibers used as membranes-based electroactive polymers.
Enhancement Research on Piezoelectric Performance of Electrospun PVDF Fiber Membranes with Inorganic Reinforced Materials

Abstract:The electrospun PVDF fiber membranes with the characteristics of light weight, strong signal and measurability, have been widely applied in the fields of environment, energy sensors and biomedical treatment. Due to the weakness of the piezoelectric and service properties, the conventional PVDF fiber membranes cannot meet the operating requirements. Based on the obtained optimal technological parameter of electrospun pure PVDF fiber membranes (P-PVDF) in the previous experiment (unpublished), three inorganic reinforced substances (AgNO3, FeCl3·6H2O, nanographene) were respectively used to dope and modify PVDF to prepare composite fiber membranes with the better piezoelectric performance. The morphology and crystal structure of the hybrid fiber membranes were observed and detected by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The results showed that the dopant could effectively promote the formation of β-phase, which can enhance the piezoelectric performance. The mechanical properties test and piezoelectric performance test exhibited that the static flexural strength, the elastic modulus, and the piezoelectric performance were improved with the addition of dopant. In addition, the influence on the addition of dopant and the doping modification mechanism were discussed. Finally, the conclusions showed that the minimum average diameter was obtained with the 0.3 wt% addition of AgNO3; the piezoelectric performance reached the strongest with the 0.8 wt% addition of FeCl3·6H2O; the mechanical properties were best with the 1.0 wt% addition of nanographene.

Abstract:Many emerging applications strongly demand flexible and efficient electromechanical conversion materials. Polymeric piezoelectric materials, with ability of large area and low temperature processing, are attractive to obtain wide applications for electromechanical sensors, transducers, and mechanical energy harvesters. A major drawback of the polymeric piezoelectric materials is their much lower piezoelectric performance property, such as piezoelectric strain coefficient, than their ceramic counterparts. Here, outstanding piezoelectric performance properties with giant effective strain and voltage coefficients of −116 pm V−1 and −1180 V mm N−1 are achieved in electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride nanofiber films from the precursor solution modified with hydrated salt. The experimental results and theoretical analysis clarify a synergistic interactive role from the hydrated salt and the electric field during electrospinning, effectively leading to polarization enhancement and alignment, and hence the giant macroscopic piezoelectric coefficients in the obtained electrospun fiber films. The demonstrated results and the understanding on the underlying mechanism exhibit the potential and strategy in achieving high‐performance functional materials through dedicated control on their nanostructures and polarizations. Giant effective piezoelectric strain and voltage coefficients are achieved in electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride nanofibers from solution modified by hydrated salt. The investigation clarifies a synergistic interactive mechanism involving the hydrated salt and the electric field during electrospinning leading to polarization enhancement and alignment, showing a strategy in achieving high‐performance functional polymeric materials through dedicated control in their nanostructures and polarizations.

Abstract:The development of novel multifunctional materials has been attracting continuous attention in recent years. In this work, fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with a designed quasi-molecular structure were introduced into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers to realize electro-mechano-photoluminescence coupling effects. The N-H and O-H groups in the CDs formed hydrogen bonds with C-F groups in PVDF, which not only ensured the uniform arrangement of the CDs in the nanofiber matrix, but also facilitated the polarization of the PVDF. The β phase in PVDF was improved from 80% to 86% by doping of the CDs. Moreover, due to the asymmetric molecular structure of the carbon dot, it possessed an intrinsic dipole moment of 4.62 Debye. The self-assembly of the CDs on the nanofibers with a similar energy-favorable conformation improved the long-range spatial ordering in the nanocomposite. The CDs could also act as working dipoles, and contributed to the piezoelectric output of the whole device. Under a repeated finger imparting, the output voltage was enhanced from 6 V of the pure PVDF to 15 V of the nanocomposite. Furthermore, the CDs endowed the fiber with fluorescence capacity. The composite nanofiber exhibited bright fluorescence with excellent homogeneity. Through monitoring of the fluorescent intensity, visualized strain sensing and information encryption could be realized, which showed high potential of the nanofiber as a multifunctional nanocomposite.

Abstract:The effect of hydrothermal process on the morphology and piezoelectric performance of zinc oxide/polyvinylidene fluoride (ZnO@PVDF) composite nanofibers is rarely studied. In this work, highly aligned ZnO nanorods were epitaxially grown on the electrospun PVDF nanofibers to form ZnO@PVDF composite nanofibers with a pine-needle-like bionic structure. Nanofibers before and after hydrothermal reaction were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and piezoelectric analysis. Results demonstrated that hydrothermal reaction conditions, including mass ratio of ZnCl2 to HMTA, ammonium hydroxide volume, hydrothermal reaction time and temperature should be carefully controlled and cooperated with each other to produce ZnO nanorods with ideal microstructure and piezoelectric performance. FTIR and XRD results confirmed the transformation of β phase in PVDF nanofibers from α phase in PVDF powder due to the elongation under strong electric field during electrospinning. Results of SEM and XRD certified the successful growth of ZnO nanorods with hexagonal wurtzite structure, which plays an important role in facilitating the percentage of β phase and the resulted piezoelectric capacity of ZnO@PVDF composite nanofibers. All of these characterizations suggest that the proposed pine-needle-like ZnO@PVDF composite nanofibers demonstrate promising potential in the wide application of electromechanical energy conversion.

Abstract:In recent years, driven by the pressing demand for sustainable energy solutions, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), a promising piezoelectric material, has garnered considerable attention for its application in energy-harvesting devices. PVDF stands out as the material of choice in piezoelectric generator technology owing to its remarkable flexibility, superior processability, long-term stability, and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, PVDF-based generators exhibit inferior piezoelectric responses compared to traditional piezoelectric ceramic materials, thereby constraining their performance in large-scale deployments. To address this limitation, researchers have been exploring innovative strategies to enhance the piezoelectric properties of PVDF. Among these, electrospinning technology emerges as a pivotal approach due to its ability to impart mechanical stretching and in situ polarization to the polymer during fabrication. This paper comprehensively reviews recent advancements in optimizing the output performance of PVDF-based piezoelectric nanofiber membranes through the integration of filler doping technology with electrospinning. We delve into the effects of various filler types on the properties of electrospun PVDF-based piezoelectric nanofiber membranes and explore their underlying mechanisms. These fillers significantly bolster the output performance of PVDF-based piezoelectric devices by augmenting PVDF's piezoelectric activity, fostering dipole orientation, and elevating the dielectric constant. Notably, the incorporation of fillers not only elevates the piezoelectric coefficient but also optimizes the microstructure, facilitating an efficient conversion between mechanical and electrical energy. Furthermore, we envision the promising application prospects of PVDF piezoelectric nanofibers in cutting-edge fields, such as health monitoring, environmental monitoring, and energy-harvesting systems. These domains urgently require piezoelectric materials that combine high sensitivity, stability, and cost-effectiveness, where PVDF-based piezoelectric nanofibers, with their distinctive advantages, are poised to demonstrate significant application potential and societal value.

Nanoscale domain imaging and local piezoelectric coefficient d33 studies of single piezoelectric polymeric nanofibers

Abstract:In this work, it is shown that the electrospun poly(vynilidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers have polymer chains re-oriented along the fiber axis and the β-phase content reaches 72.7%, therefore being able to be implemented into electroactive device components. Further, nanoscale domain imaging and local piezoelectric coefficient d33 of the nanofibers have been intensively studied using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). The piezoelectric response (PR) imaging and butterfly amplitude loop have been demonstrated to confirm that the nanodomains result from the out-of-plane displacement and the d33 has an uneven distribution with the higher values on the fiber periphery.
Comprehensive Characterization of PVDF Nanofibers at Macro- and Nanolevel

Abstract:This study is focused on the characterization and investigation of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers from the point of view of macro- and nanometer level. The fibers were produced using electrostatic spinning process in air. Two types of fibers were produced since the collector speed (300 rpm and 2000 rpm) differed as the only one processing parameter. Differences in fiber’s properties were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with cross-sections observation utilizing focused ion beam (FIB). The phase composition was determined by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. The crystallinity was determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and chemical analysis of fiber’s surfaces and bonding states were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Other methods, such as atomic force microscopy (AFM) and piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM), were employed to describe morphology and piezoelectric response of single fiber, respectively. Moreover, the wetting behavior (hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity) was also studied. It was found that collector speed significantly affects fibers alignment and wettability (directionally ordered fibers produced at 2000 rpm almost super-hydrophobic in comparison with disordered fibers spun at 300 rpm with hydrophilic behavior) as properties at macrolevel. However, it was confirmed that these differences at the macrolevel are closely connected and originate from nanolevel attributes. The study of single individual fibers revealed some protrusions on the fiber’s surface, and fibers spun at 300 rpm had a core-shell design, while fibers spun at 2000 rpm were hollow.

Abstract:Porous poly(vinylidene fluoride) fibers were prepared by electrospinning from solutions in dimethylformamide, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and water. The PVDF fiber mats were then converted into electrospun carbon fiber paper using a low temperature chemical stabilization treatment (“dehydrofluorination”) followed by carbonization at 1000°C. The resulting self-supporting carbon fiber paper exhibits unusually high surface area, in excess of 380m2/g as measured by the nitrogen adsorption method, and a hierarchical pore structure. The largest pores are formed by the interstices between fibers; intermediate-sized pores arise from liquid–liquid phase separation during electrospinning to form polymer-rich and solvent-rich domains within the fibers; the smallest pores form upon decomposition of the PEO during carbonization. The electrospun carbon paper performs well as an electrode for driving the redox chemistry of ferrocene/ferrocenium. This is attributed to the high surface area of the electrode and the ease of diffusion of the redox-active species within the porous structure. The ratio of the dehydrofluorination agent (1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene) to vinylidene fluoride during dehydrofluorination was found to be the key to retaining the as-spun pore morphology during carbonization. The structure and morphology were further characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:This review introduces the methods of modifying the piezoelectric properties of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) materials and compares the piezoelectric properties of each method. Then, the applications of PVDF piezoelectric properties are introduced, including flexible sensors, smart electronic skin, energy harvesters, and wearable textiles. Finally, the electrospinning methods and current problems are summarized. With the great demand for flexible self‐powered sensors and nanogenerators, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is widely investigated for outstanding piezoelectric and dielectric constant. In the pursuit for increasing β content, electrospinning is exhibited to be an effective method without external high voltage pooling or mechanical stretching and thus is considered a cost‐effective and simple method, because the molecular dipoles in the PVDF can be aligned during the process of electrospinning with high voltage field and stretching. The methods for improving piezoelectric characteristics are briefly introduced in this review, electrospinning fibers including uniaxial fibers, highly aligned fibers, core–shell fibers and Janus fibers are revealed, and research on theoretical modeling is carried out for efficiency in the design of piezoelectric nanogenerator. Last, studies on prospective applications based on electrospun PVDF and its copolymer PVDF‐TrFE, from sensors to smart skin, from energy harvesters to electronic textiles, are being conducted.
