Abstract:Various surface techniques have been developed to improve the corrosion resistance of metals. It has been noted that the TiO2 film, as a photoanode, might provide metals cathodic protection under illumination. An attempt has been made in this work to deposit a nano-TiO2 composite coatings on 316L stainless steel to enhance the barrier corrosion resistance and hydrophobicity. The modification of nano-TiO2 composite coatings on metal for enhancing and lasting its photogenerated cathodic protection has been emphasized. By a modified so-gel method, ultra fine particles of TiO2 sol was fabricated at the room temperature. The nano TiO2 coatings were coated on the surface of the stainless steel by the dip-coating or spin-coating method. A hydrothermal post-treatment method was developed to obtain crack-free coatings and to optimize the surface structure and properties. At the same time, the effects of hydrothermal post-treatment on the morphology, particle size and hydrophobic properties were investigated. By the electrochemical tests and xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization, the corrosion resistance of nano TiO2 coated 316L stainless steel was extensively investigated in different solutions. The influences of coating thickness, [Cl] and pH on corrosion resistance of the nano-TiO2 coatings were studied. It is shown that under the dark condition, the coatings with the thickness of 375~464 nm exhibit a best quality in corrosion protection, when the concentration of NaCl is less 1 mol/L and pH is in the range of 4~12. Furthermore, during the immerging of nano TiO2 coated 316L stainless steel electrode in the 0.5 mol/L NaCl solution (pH=4.6), the protective property of the coatings become more improvement as a longer time within the first 96 hours and then keeps a steady protective property for 1008 h. The corrosion rates of coated metal is decreased by approximately 100~1000 times. The coatings immerged in the NaCl solution for 1008h were analyzed by XPS measurement. The spectrum shows that the surface of the coatings contains mostly Ti, O and C. There are fewer atoms of Fe and Cr in the coatings at the 200nm depth. By the hydrothermal reaction method, the superhydrophilic coated Ti metal was firstly prepared. It shows that the coatings is of a super hydrophilic and lipophilic property for a long time under the illumination or in dark condition. The results of the electrochemical and photoelectrochemical tests indicate that the coatings have a good quality of corrosion protection as a barrier coatings and of photoinduced cathode protection as a photoanode. The surface of nano TiO2 coatings was improved by a hydrothermal post-treatment, and then super-hydrophobic coatings was fabricated by self-assembly of FSA-13 on the improved rough surface. It is indicated that during the first 1h in the exposed experiment, the hydrophobic coatings exhibit a better protective property than that of the TiO2 coatings. However, as the exposure prolonging, the protective property of the hydrophobic coatings are nearly the same as that of the TiO2 coatings. Using a TiO2 sol coatings as a photoanode, the performances of the photocathodic protection were investigated by combining photoelectrochemical with corrosion electrochemical measurements. The results show that the TiO2 coatings with 375~464nm thickness not only have a good protective property as a barrier coatings but also exhibit a good photo-generated cathodic protection of metals under ultraviolet (UV) illumination. By the sol-gel method and spin-coating process, the nano TiO2-SnO2 composite films were prepared on the Indium-Tin Oxide (ITO) glass. The photoelectrochemical setup consisted of a photoelectrochemical cell and a corrosion cell. The solution in two cells was 0.5 mol/L NaCl solution (pH=4.6). The influence of photogenetated potential of flims on polarization potential of the 316L electrode were discussed under UV illumination. The charge distribution and electron transfer on the interface of the films and electrolyte were explained by the change of the open potential following on or off UV illumination and the behaviors of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Using sol-gel method and dip-coating process, TiO2 and TiO2/TiO2-V2O5/TiO2 composite films were coated 316Lss. The morphology and structure of the films were analyzed by AFM and XRD. The corrosion resistance of the composite films with and without UV illumination were evaluated by the photochemical and electrochemical measurements. It is indicated that the composite coatings act as duple protection performances, that is, on UV illumination the composite films as a photoanode provide a cathodic protection for 316Lss, and when the UV light shut off the photoexcited potential goes slowly up to – 0.14V during 6 hours, which implys that the nano composite coatings are able to keep photo-generated cathodic protection even in dark condition.
