Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (LiS) batteries have been widely studied, and considered as one of the most promising energy storage systems, because of their superior theoretical energy density, non-toxicity, high abundance, and environmental friendliness. However, LiS batteries suffer from problems such as the electrical insulating characteristic of sulfur and unsatisfactorily long cycling life. As a superior type of carbon material, graphene have been intensively investigated as intermediate layers to overcome these problems because of its large surface area, good chemical stability, and excellent electrical conductivity. In this review, we summarize the recent application of graphene-based materials, including simple graphene and graphene-based nanocomposites, as modifying interlayers in LiS batteries. Furthermore, the strategies to enhance their electrochemical performance are summarized and discussed, for example, physical and chemical confinement. Finally, the limitation and challenges of graphene-based materials as interlayers for LiS batteries, as well as their prospects for future research, are proposed. We hope that this review will be helpful for scientists to design and fabricate high-performance LiS batteries based on graphene-based interlayers and boost their practical applications.

Abstract:The increasing demands for the clean energy have steered the rapid development of energy storage devices with high energy and power density as well as high energy utilization efficiency. Lithium (Li)-based batteries are the most potential ones and are being intensively studied owing to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density. Despite the necessary device components including the cathodes, electrolytes and anodes, the use of interlayers is also of great significance for better performance of the battery. In lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, the interlayers enable selective control of polysulfides shuttling, while not disturbing the ion transfer. In-situ formed interlayers (solid electrolyte interphase) or artificial interlayers can also modify the physico-chemical properties or prevent the formation of Li dendrites to stabilize the metallic Li anodes. Interlayers are inert in these devices but they are indispensable to construct a better operation environment for these devices just like what the cell membrane does. In this review, we discuss the most recent applications of emerging interlayer system in Li-based batteries (Li-S batteries and Li metal anode) by proposing the “cell membrane” concept as a model. We aim to use such an analogy to build up a common concept and designing principle of the interlayers for better understanding their work mechanism and fully address the significance of interlayers. This review concludes with some personal perspectives which will shed some light on the emerging requirements of the “cell-membrane-like” interlayer system for guiding future development of advanced Li-based batteries.

Abstract:With the ever-increasing demands of electrochemical energy storage, lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have drawn more attention because of their superior theoretical energy density and high specific capacity. However, practical applications of Li–S batteries suffer from problems such as low conductivity of sulfur and discharged products, severe polysulfide shuttling effect, and large volume change of sulfur during cycling, resulting in sluggish rate performance, and unsatisfactory cycle life. Various nanostructured carbon materials have been served as barrier layers to overcome these problems. In particular, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with unique 1D nanostructure, have been introduced to Li–S batteries as the intermediate layers because of its superior flexibility, excellent electrical conductivity, and good chemical stability. Moreover, CNTs and CNTs-based barrier layers could also curb lithium polysulfides shuttling. In the minireview, we summarize recent works of CNTs-based materials as modifying interlayers for Li–S batteries. In addition, the strategies to enhance electrochemical performances of the batteries are summarized and discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects for future research of CNTs-based materials as interlayer are proposed. We hope this review will be useful for designing and fabricating high-performance Li–S batteries and boost their practical applications.

Abstract:<h2>Summary</h2>Sulfur cathode offers a high theoretical specific capacity of 1,675 mAh g−1 and a high specific energy of 2,600 Wh kg−1 when implemented in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Moreover, sulfur is the redundant by-product of the petroleum industry, ensuring the low cost of LSBs. These features make LSBs particularly competitive among next-generation energy storage systems. However, the sulfur cathode suffers from several challenges such as a large volume change, low electrical conductivity of sulfur, as well as the polysulfide shuttle effect, which result in low utilization and loss of cathode active materials. Insertion of membranes (or so-called interlayers) between the separator and cathode has been demonstrated as a promising approach to alleviate these issues. In this review, recent progress regarding the advanced interlayer systems are summarized. Specifically, we generalize the different types of interlayers, and the operating mechanisms and widespread availability of interlayers in LSBs are concluded. Furthermore, the scientific/technical challenges and perspective are presented.

Abstract:In the last two decades, tremendous attention has been devoted to the development of novel electrodes for boosting the electrochemical performance of batteries. Despite the high energy densities, the novel battery systems, such as Li-S batteries, have encountered several issues that cannot be overcome by the electrode design alone. Therefore, a multi-functional freestanding film is inserted between the anode and cathode, which is normally named as "interlayer", to enhance the electrochemical performance. Thanks to the wide selection of materials, various straightforward, flexible films with controllable physical and chemical properties are rapidly developed and employed as interlayer in rechargeable batteries. This review introduces the design strategies for producing interlayers and describes the essential roles of interlayers in polysulfide adsorption for Li-S batteries and anode protection for alkali-metal batteries and multivalent-ion batteries. Exceptional functionalities of interlayers in providing polysulfide adsorption through physical interaction, H-bond interaction, and chemical interaction in Li-S batteries are summarized. The ameliorating effect of interlayers on metal batteries in suppressing the formation and growth of anode dendrites via mechanically withstanding continuous growth of dendrite, lowering local current density of anodes, reducing the overpotential of nucleation, and offering active sites for uniform ion deposition in the current state-of-the-art are reviewed. Recent advances of interlayers on structural design, component optimization, and function mechanism are critically assessed to elucidate the fundamental understandings in various rechargeable battery systems. Potential opportunities of interlayers for novel energy storage applications are revealed to offer new insights towards the development of advanced batteries.

A Freestanding Flexible Single‐Atom Cobalt‐Based Multifunctional Interlayer Toward Reversible and Durable Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The development of Li-S batteries is greatly hindered by the polysulfide shuttling and sluggish sulfur redox kinetics, leading to low utilization of active materials and rapid capacity decay. Herein, a freestanding multifunctional interlayer, prepared by layer-by-layer assembling of the single-atom cobalt-anchored nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NC@SA-Co) and dual network of carbon nanotube-cellulose nanofiber (CNT-CNF) hybrid, is proposed to effectively enhance the polysulfide immobilization and sulfur redox kinetics. The conductive CNT network acts as the physical barrier to confine the polysulfide diffusion and to facilitate the reuse of polysulfides. The oxygen-group-terminated CNF network allows the hopping of Li+ ion and suppresses the polysulfide crossover due to the strong electrostatic repulsion. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the 2D NC@SA-Co with numerous well-defined single sites of Co-N-4 can effectively serve as an electrocatalyst to boost the reversible reaction of polysulfides. As a result, the assembled Li-S batteries with the multifunctional interlayer deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 1160 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C and an ultralow capacity decay of 0.058% per cycle over 700 cycles. Even with a high sulfur loading of 7.2 mg cm(-2), a high areal capacity of 8.3 mAh cm(-2) can be achieved.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks with tunable pore structures, structural diversity, and functional versatility are essential for boosting high‐energy rechargeable lithium‐sulfur batteries. This review presents the opportunities and challenges of directly using covalent organic frameworks as host materials, modified layers, artificial solid electrolyte interphase layers, and solid‐state electrolytes in lithium–sulfur batteries. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects are thoroughly discussed. Lithium–sulfur batteries are recognized as one of the most promising next‐generation energy‐storage technologies owing to their high energy density and low cost. Nevertheless, the shuttle effect of polysulfide intermediates and the formation of lithium dendrites are the principal reasons that restrict the practical adoption of current Li–S batteries. Adjustable frameworks, structural variety, and functional adaptability of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have the potential to overcome the issues associated with Li–S battery technology. Herein, a summary is presented of emerging COF materials in addressing the challenging problems in terms of sulfur hosts, modified separators, artificial solid electrolyte interphase layers, and solid‐state electrolytes. This comprehensive overview focuses on the design and chemistry of COFs used to upgrade Li–S batteries. Furthermore, existing difficulties, prospective remedies, and prospective research directions for COFs for Li–S batteries are discussed, laying the groundwork for future advancements in this class of fascinating materials.

Abstract:Commercial lithium-ion batteries are gradually approaching their theoretical values (200-250 Wh kg-1), which cannot meet the fast-growing energy storage demands. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are anticipated to supersede lithium-ion batteries as the next-generation energy storage system owing to their high theoretical specific capacity (1675 mAh g-1) and energy density (2600 Wh kg-1). Nonetheless, Li-S batteries encounter several challenges, including the inadequate conductivity of sulfur and lithium sulfide, sulfur's volume expansion, and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides, all of which significantly impact the practical utilization of Li-S batteries. Electrospun carbon-based nanofibers can simultaneously resolve these issues with their economical preparation, distinctive nanostructure, and exceptional flexibility. This review presents the most recent research findings on electrospun carbon-based nanofibers materials serving as sulfur hosts and interlayer components in Li-S batteries. We analyzed the impact of the material's structural design on the performance of Li-S batteries and the relative underlying mechanism. Finally, the current challenges and issues faced by carbon-based nanofibers composites in the application of Li-S batteries are summarized, and the future development trajectory are outlined.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries ( LIBs) are extensively used in numerous portable devices such as smart-phones and laptops. However, current LIBs based on the conventional intercalation mechanism cannot meet the requirements of the electronics industry and electric vehicles although they are approaching their theoretical capacity. Therefore, it is extremely urgent to seek for systems with higher energy densities. Among various promising candidates, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with a high theoretical capacity are very attractive. However, the commercial use of Li-S batteries still faces obstacles such as the low electrical conductivity of sul-fur and lithium sulfide and the dissolution of polysulfides. The introduction of nanocarbon materials into Li-S batteries sheds light on the efficient utilization of sulfur by improving the conductivity of the composites and restraining the shuttle effect of polysulfides. Here, we give a brief review of recent progress on carbon/ sulfur composites, especially carbon nanotube-, graphene-and porous car-bon-based hybrids, new insights on the relationships between the structure and the electrochemical performance, and propose some important aspects for the future development of Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Compared with conventional lithium ion batteries (LIBs), lithium sulfur (Li–S) batteries possess advantages such as higher theoretical energy densities and better cost efficiencies, making them promising next-generation energy storage systems. However, the commercialization of Li–S batteries is impeded by several drawbacks, including low cycling stabilities, limited sulfur utilizations, existing shuttle effects of polysulfide intermediates, serious safety concerns, as well as inferior cycling performances of lithium metal anodes. To address these issues, researchers have achieved rapid developments for sulfur cathodes and increased their attention to lithium metal anodes to facilitate the widespread application of Li–S batteries. And among the substrate materials for electrodes in Li–S batteries being developed, carbon-based materials have been especially promising because of their multifunctionality, demonstrating great potential for application in advanced energy storage and conversion systems. In this review, recent advancements of carbon-based frameworks applied to Li–S batteries will be summarized and diverse utilization methods of these carbon-based materials for both sulfur cathodes and lithium metal anodes will be provided. Abstract:The development of advanced energy storage systems is of crucial importance to meet the ever-growing demands of electric vehicles, portable devices, and renewable energy harvest. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, with the advantages in its high specific energy density, low cost of raw materials, and environmental benignity, are of great potential to serve as next-generation batteries. However, there are many obstacles towards the practical application of Li-S batteries such as the electrical insulating nature of sulfur, the volume expansion during lithium insertion, and the shuttle of soluble polysulfide intermediates that induces severe degradation of the cell performance. In this review, the progresses of multi-functional separators/interlayers in Li-S batteries are highlighted. The introduction of multi-functional separators/interlayers with unexpected multiple functionalities is beneficial for better sulfur utilization, efficient polysulfide diffusion inhibition, and anode protection. Multi-functional separator system with ion selective/electrical conductive polymer, sp2 and porous carbon, metal oxide modified separators, as well as interlinked free-standing nanocarbon, micro/mesoporous carbon, and other conductive interlayers have been proposed. The biomass derived materials was also included as interlayer for advanced Li-S batteries. These novel Li-S cell configurations with multi-functional separators/interlayers are especially suitable for Li-S batteries with high capacity, high stability, and high-rate performance. The opportunities of high-performance separators/interlayers and their applications in next-generation Li-S batteries were also involved. New insights on the role of working separators/interlayers in practical Li-S cells should be further explored to obtain the principle and process for advanced components for energy storage devices based on multi-electron conversion reactions.
Electrocatalytic Interlayer with Fast Lithium–Polysulfides Diffusion for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries to Enhance Electrochemical Kinetics under Lean Electrolyte Conditions

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are promising energy-storage devices because of their high theoretical energy densities. For practical Li-S batteries, reducing the amount of electrolyte used is essential for achieving the high energy densities. However, reducing the electrolyte amount leads to severe performance degradation, mainly because of sluggish deposition of discharge products (Li2S) and the accompanying passivation issue that arise from the insulating nature of Li2S. In this study, a lightweight, robust interlayer, with a 3D open structure and a low surface area is designed and fabricated. The structure facilitates electrolyte infiltration without trapping too much electrolyte. Moreover, the electrocatalytic Co nanoparticles embedded in the skeleton surface within the interlayer effectively promote Li ion diffusion, polysulfides conversion, and Li2S deposition, and therefore enhance the electrochemical kinetics under lean electrolyte conditions. The mechanisms involved in the interlayer effects are investigated by microstructural characterizations, electrochemical performance tests, density functional theory calculations, and in situ X-ray diffraction characterization. These results show the feasibility of using an interlayer strategy to improve the electrochemical performances of Li-S batteries under lean electrolyte conditions to potentially increase the practical energy densities of Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are attracting much attention due to their high energy densities. However, Li-S batteries often suffer from low Coulombic efficiency, severe degradation of cyclic capacity, and low utilization of active sulfur material because of the low electrical conductivity of sulfur and the severe shuttle effect. To solve these issues, various nanostructured carbon-based materials have been developed to serve as the sulfur host materials, modify separators and protect lithium (Li) anode due to their good conductivity, large surface area, and electrochemical stability. In this review, a brief introduction of electrochemical principles and prospects of the Li-S batteries are discussed firstly. Then the recent achievements and challenges of nanostructured carbon-based materials in Li-S batteries are summarized. The nanostructured carbon-based materials focus on active carbon, carbon nanotubes, graphene and their composites. The role of these carbon-based materials in Li-S batteries emphasize on the design of sulfur host materials, the modification of functional separators as well as the protection of the Li anode. Furthermore, various flexible Li-S batteries based on freestanding nanostructured carbon/sulfur electrodes are also presented. Finally, the further developments and prospects in this field are also discussed.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are recognized as an encouraging alternative for future power storage technologies. However, their practical application is hindered by several significant challenges, including slow redox kinetics, the shuttle effect, and the formation of lithium dendrites. Here a binder-free, self-supporting multifunctional interlayer composed of lithium lanthanum titanate (LLTO) with amorphous carbon nanofiber matrices for Li-S batteries has been constructed. This multifunctional interlayer has been designed to facilitate the redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), promote the nucleation of lithium sulfide (Li2S), and hinder the formation of lithium dendrites. The electrocatalytic properties of the interlayer were subjected to systematic evaluation through electrochemical testing, and the lithium deposition was assessed by examining the surface evolution of lithium metal in symmetric cells. The LLTO carbon matrices interlayer sustained a high specific capacity of 703.3 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 C, with a sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm-2. Furthermore, it demonstrated a high capacity of 905.9 mAh g-1 with a decay rate of 0.069% per cycle over 1000 cycles at a current density of 5 C with sulfur loading of 1 mg cm-2. This investigation highlights the potential of LLTO carbon composite materials as multifunctional interlayers, which could facilitate the optimization of advanced Li-S batteries.

Abstract:In the past decades, lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have demonstrated huge practical potential due to their ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity, low price, and environmental friendliness. However, LSBs are still faced with the problems of volumetric expansion, slow reaction kinetics, and short working life due to the shuttling of polysulfides. The introduction of a free-standing interlayer is a good way to solve the problems because of the physical confinement, chemical entrapment, and conversion. This review summarizes the common fabrication methods of free-standing interlayers, including the power-originated and film-originated methods. The modification of the as-prepared free-standing interlayers is also accomplished into physical treatment, atomic doping, and compound introduction. Finally, we conclude and compare the different fabrication methods of free-standing interlayers and their modifications and put forward the outlook of the high-performance free-standing interlayers.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising electrochemical energy storage systems because of their high theoretical energy density, natural abundance, and environmental benignity. However, several problems such as the insulating nature of sulfur, high solubility of polysulfides, large volume variation of the sulfur cathode, and safety concerns regarding the lithium anode hinder the commercialization of Li-S batteries. Graphene-based materials, with advantages such as high conductivity and good flexibility, have shown effectiveness in realizing Li-S batteries with high energy density and high stability. These materials can be used as the cathode matrix, separator coating layer, and anode protection layer. In this review, the recent progress of graphene-based materials used in Li-S batteries, including graphene, functionalized graphene, heteroatom-doped graphene, and graphene-based composites, has been summarized. And perspectives regarding the development trend of graphene-based materials for Li-S batteries have been discussed.

A sulfur-infiltrated mesoporous silica/CNT composite-based functional interlayer for enhanced Li–S battery performance

Abstract:The design and construction of functional interlayers for lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries has attracted much attention and was demonstrated to be effective to alleviate the notorious “shuttle effect.” An often neglected issue is that the introduction of interlayer will reduce the overall energy density of the battery. In this work, we report a sulfur-infiltrated mesoporous silica/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite as an interlayer for Li–S batteries. The mesoporous silica with large surface area (842 m2 g−1) and pore volume (0.85 cm3 g−1) can not only ensure abundant exposed sites for polysulfide capture but also accommodate a large amount of sulfur inside the pore structure. CNT was composited with silica to enhance the electronic conductivity of the interlayer, which is beneficial for fast sulfur redox reaction kinetics and improved utilization of sulfur. Compared to the pristine and CNT-modified separator, the mesoporous silica/CNT composite-modified separator enables better cycling stability and rate performance. More importantly, it was demonstrated that separately incorporating sulfur into a cathode and interlayer enables better battery performance than locating all the sulfur in the cathode. At a total sulfur loading of 4 mg cm−2 (3 mg cm−2 sulfur on the cathode and 1 mg cm−2 on the mesoporous silica/CNT interlayer), a high initial discharge capacity of 1410 mAh g−1 and a retained capacity of 952 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles were exhibited. This work provides important guidance for future design of functional interlayers for practical Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries are in the spotlight because their outstanding theoretical specific energy is much higher than those of the commercial lithium ion (Li‐ion) batteries. Li‐S batteries are tough competitors for future‐developing energy storage in the fields of portable electronics and electric vehicles. However, the severe "shuttle effect" of the polysulfides and the serious damage of lithium dendrites are main factors blocking commercial production of Li‐S batteries. Owing to their superior nanostructure, electrospun nanofiber materials commonly show some unique characteristics that can simultaneously resolve these issues. So far, various novel cathodes, separators, and interlayers of electrospun nanofiber materials which are applied to resolve these challenges are researched. This review presents the fundamental research and technological development of multifarious electrospun nanofiber materials for Li‐S cells, including their processing methods, structures, morphology engineering, and electrochemical performance. Not only does the review article contain a summary of electrospun nanofiber materials in Li‐S batteries but also a proposal for designing electrospun nanofiber materials for Li‐S cells. These systematic discussions and proposed directions can enlighten thoughts and offer ways in the reasonable design of electrospun nanofiber materials for excellent Li‐S batteries in the near future.
