Abstract:Although lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising next-generation energy-storage systems, their practical applications are limited by the growth of Li dendrites and lithium polysulfide shuttling. These problems can be mitigated through the use of single-atom catalysts (SACs), which exhibit the advantages of maximal atom utilization efficiency (≈100%) and unique catalytic properties, thus effectively enhancing the performance of electrode materials in energy-storage devices. This review systematically summarizes the recent progress in SACs intended for use in Li-metal anodes, S cathodes, and separators, briefly introducing the operating principles of Li-S batteries, the action mechanisms of the corresponding SACs, and the fundamentals of SACs activity, and then comprehensively describes the main strategies for SACs synthesis. Subsequently, the applications of SACs and the principles of SACs operation in reinforced Li-S batteries as well as other metal-S batteries are individually illustrated, and the major challenges of SACs usage in Li-S batteries as well as future development directions are presented.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries offer superior energy density, longer lifespan, and enhanced safety compared to traditional liquid-electrolyte batteries. Their development has the potential to revolutionize battery technology, including the creation of electric vehicles with extended ranges and smaller more efficient portable devices. The employment of metallic lithium as the negative electrode allows the use of Li-free positive electrode materials, expanding the range of cathode choices and increasing the diversity of solid-state battery design options. In this review, we present recent developments in the configuration of solid-state lithium batteries with conversion-type cathodes, which cannot be paired with conventional graphite or advanced silicon anodes due to the lack of active lithium. Recent advancements in electrode and cell configuration have resulted in significant improvements in solid-state batteries with chalcogen, chalcogenide, and halide cathodes, including improved energy density, better rate capability, longer cycle life, and other notable benefits. To fully leverage the benefits of lithium metal anodes in solid-state batteries, high-capacity conversion-type cathodes are necessary. While challenges remain in optimizing the interface between solid-state electrolytes and conversion-type cathodes, this area of research presents significant opportunities for the development of improved battery systems and will require continued efforts to overcome these challenges.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries (Li-S) are regarded as a promising candidate for next-generation energy storage systems due to their high specific capacity (1675 mA h g-1) and energy density (2600 W h kg-1) as well as the abundance, safety and low cost of sulfur materials. However, many disadvantages hinder the further development of Li-S batteries, such as the insulating nature of the active materials, the dissolution of intermediate products, large volume expansion and safety concerns related to metal lithium anodes. During the past decade, tremendous efforts have been made in the design and synthesis of electrode materials. In this review, we briefly discuss the electrochemical mechanism of Li-S batteries and their practical problems. Then, we systematically summarize the current strategies for designing cathode materials with stable and long cycling performance, including sulfur cathodes and Li2S cathodes; subsequently, the current development of solid-state electrolytes and protective strategies for lithium metal anodes are briefly discussed. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives of Li-S batteries are presented.

Abstract:<p>As a prospective next‐generation energy storage solution, lithium–sulfur batteries excel at their economical attractiveness (sulfur abundance) and electrochemical performance (high energy density, ≈2600 Wh kg<sup>−1</sup>). However, their application is impracticable without addressing the following vital issues: i) shuttling effect of lithium polysulfides (LPSs), ii) sluggish redox conversion kinetics of LPSs, iii) large volumetric expansion of S after lithiation (≈80%), and iv) uncontrollable Li dendritic formation. Recently, many strategies have been proposed to solve these issues, which have focused on physical/chemical entrapment of LPSs, catalytic promotion of LPSs conversion and directional regulation of Li plating/stripping. Designing/constructing heterostructured materials is one of the promising approaches to potentially resolve all the above challenges with one material. In this review, the recent advances of heterostructures focused on S cathodes, interlayers and Li anodes are reviewed in detail. First, the fundamental chemistry of Li–S batteries and principles of heterostructures reinforced Li–S batteries are described. Second, the applications of heterostructures in Li–S batteries are discussed comprehensively. Finally, a concise outlook on utilizing the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of heterostructures is delivered, with the aim to provide some inspiration for the design and fabrication of advanced Li–S batteries.</p>

Abstract:Owing to high specific energy, low cost, and environmental friendliness, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries hold great promise to meet the increasing demand for advanced energy storage beyond portable electronics, and to mitigate environmental problems. However, the application of Li-S batteries is challenged by several obstacles, including their short life and low sulfur utilization, which become more serious when sulfur loading is increased to the practically accepted level above 3-5 mg cm(-2). More and more efforts have been made recently to overcome the barriers toward commercially viable Li-S batteries with a high sulfur loading. This review highlights the recent progress in high-sulfur-loading Li-S batteries enabled by hierarchical design principles at multiscale. Particularly, basic insights into the interfacial reactions, strategies for mesoscale assembly, unique architectures, and configurational innovation in the cathode, anode, and separator are under specific concerns. Hierarchy in the multiscale design is proposed to guide the future development of high-sulfur-loading Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been considered as promising candidates for large scale high-energy-density devices due to the potentially high energy density, low cost, and more pronounced ecological compatibility. However, the complex Li-S conversion reactions, unsatisfactory battery performance, and unsafe metallic Li anode restrict the development of Li-S batteries to achieve commercialization. This review mainly focuses on three aspects which are the remaining challenges, recent advances, and applications in Li-S batteries. Firstly, this review portrays Li-S conversion chemistry involving the multi-step and multi-electron reaction mechanism, as well as the remaining challenges. Then the scientific strategies and very recent advances of the cathode, electrolyte, lithium anode, and other constituent parts of Li-S batteries are detailly summed up, as well as their advantages and limitations. For the sake of promoting the Li-S batteries practicalization, next section is primarily concerned with problems, the corresponding solutions, and application scenarios of practical pouch cells. Finally, the important findings as guidelines and some future directions as trends for developing emerging Li-S batteries are briefly summarized.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been regarded as the candidate for the next-generation energy storage system due to the high theoretical specific capacity (1675 mAh/g), energy density (2600 Wh/kg) and the abundance of elemental sulfur, but the application of Li-S batteries is impeded by a series of problems. Recently, all-solid-state Li-S batteries (ASSLSBs) have drawn great attention because many drawbacks such as safety issues caused by metallic lithium anodes and organic liquid electrolytes can be overcome through the use of solid-state electrolytes (SEs). However, not only the problems brought by sulfur cathodes still exist, but more trouble arouses from the interfaces between SEs and cathodes, hampering the practical application of ASSLSBs. Therefore, in order to deal with the problems, enormous endeavors have been done on ASSLSB cathodes during the past few decades, including engineering of cathode active materials, cathode host materials, cathode binder materials and cathode structures. In this review, the electrochemical mechanism and existing problems of ASSLSBs are briefly introduced. Subsequently, the strategies for developing cathode materials and designing cathode structures are presented. Then there follows a brief discussion of SE problems and expectations, and finally, the challenges and perspectives of ASSLSBs are summarized.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted increasing interest due to their high theoretical energy density and low-cost sulfur. Challenges are still faced in the development of sulfur cathodes, due to the insulating properties of sulfur and lithium sulfide, diffusion of soluble polysulfides and slow redox kinetics of electrochemical conversion reactions. Hollow-structured materials with features such as high specific surface area, tunable pore structure, and controllable morphology and composition have shown great potential to be applied in high performance sulfur cathodes for LSBs. To promote further breakthroughs in this amazing field, this review highlights on the recent advances of hollow-structured sulfur cathodes, with an emphasis on polar inorganic/organic materials that exhibit strong interactions with polysulfides, thus suppressing the unfavourable shuttle effect, and/or efficient catalytic activity towards sulfur conversion reactions, thus improving the redox kinetics. Material design principles, experimental methods and the subsequent effects on electrochemical performance are discussed. The remaining challenges and perspectives associated with sulfur cathode design and battery evaluation are also presented.

Abstract:The review mainly focuses on the design of high sulfur loading cathodes. It summarizes the major problems and challenges facing high sulfur loading LiS batteries and proposes some effective approaches to achieve high‐performance LiS batteries with high sulfur loading cathodes, which may guide the design of high actual energy density LiS batteries. Lithium‐sulfur batteries hold great potential for next‐generation energy storage systems, due to their high theoretical energy density and the natural abundance of sulfur. Although much progress has been achieved recently, the low actual energy density of LiS batteries is still the key challenge in implementing their practical applications. Because the energy density greatly depends on the areal capacity of their sulfur cathodes, the sulfur content and sulfur loading play an important role in meeting the conditions necessary for practical applications. Therefore, escalating the areal capacity of sulfur cathodes is essential to promote LiS technology from laboratory‐scale devices to industrial (or commercial) systems. In this review, the recent progress in high sulfur loading of LiS batteries (>4 mg cm−2) is highlighted from various aspects, including sulfur hosts, binders, separators, and interlayers. In particular, sulfur hosts derived from carbon, polymer, transition metal oxide/ sulfide, metal‐organic framework, and other novel materials, which can promote high sulfur loading, are discussed in detail. Moreover, unique free‐standing structures and configurational innovation of separators and interlayers are overviewed. Based on the current achievements, future efforts for developing high‐loading LiS batteries are proposed to pave the way for their commercial applications.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are considered to be rather latest and high-performance storage batteries due to their high theoretical specific capacity (1675 mAt.g(-1)), high energy density (2600 Wh.kg(-1)), environmental friendliness, low cost, and safety. These features make them important in the field of mobile electric vehicles and portable devices. However, because of rapid capacity attenuation with poor cycle and rate performances, these batteries are far from ideal for commercial applications. This paper reviews the entire and latest studies in lithium-sulfur batteries. Cathodes, electrolyte, separators, and anodes protection are introduced in detail. The existing lithium-sulfur batteries defects and problems are analyzed. Finally, we provide some insights into the future direction and prospects of lithium batteries.

Abstract:Amid burgeoning environmental concerns, electrochemical energy storage has rapidly gained momentum. Among the contenders in the ‘beyond lithium’ energy storage arena, the lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery has emerged as particularly promising, owing to its potential to reversibly store considerable electrical energy at low cost. Whether or not Li–S energy storage will be able to fulfil this potential depends on simultaneously solving many aspects of its underlying conversion chemistry. Here, we review recent developments in tackling the dissolution of polysulfides — a fundamental problem in Li–S batteries — focusing on both experimental and computational approaches to tailor the chemical interactions between the sulfur host materials and polysulfides. We also discuss smart cathode architectures enabled by recent materials engineering, especially for high areal sulfur loading, as well as innovative electrolyte design to control the solubility of polysulfides. Key factors that allow long-life and high-loading Li–S batteries are summarized.

Abstract:As the demand to energy storage devices for portable electronics and electric vehicles increase, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted much attention for its extremely high energy density.However, the low coulombic efficiency, rapid fading capacity, and poor cycle performance of lithium anode hinder the demonstration of practical Li-S cells.The advanced functional separator/interlayer system have been proposed and verified to retard the shuttle of polysulfides and extend the cycling life of a Li-S cell.In this review, the progress on multifunctional separators/interlayers for lithium sulfur batteries are summarized, including permselective separator inhibiting polysulfide shuttles, separator with low interfacial resistance, and composite electrolyte stabilizing anode and retarding the formation of Li dendrites.New insights into challenge and opportunities of multifunctional separator/interlayer system are also prospected.

Abstract:Rechargeable Li-S batteries have become attractive for next-generation energy storage technology due to their high specific energy, low cost, and materials earth abundance. However, the Li-S technology has not been successfully commercialized because of several outstanding challenges including fast capacity fading, low Coulombic efficiency, and limited rate capability. Over the past few years, considerable efforts have been devoted to solving the challenges associated with the sulfur cathode. In thismini review, we summarize our recent advances in Li-S cathodes, such as the understanding of the nano-size effect in sulfur materials, the design of polymer functional additives, and the realization of a novel in situ wrapping approach for Li-S cathodes. Abstract:Lithium-ion sulfur batteries as a new energy storage system with high capacity and enhanced safety have been emphasized, and their development has been summarized in this review. The lithium-ion sulfur battery applies elemental sulfur or lithium sulfide as the cathode and lithium-metal-free materials as the anode, which can be divided into two main types. One is anode-type, where elemental sulfur is applied as the cathode, and the anode provides lithium ions. The other one is cathode-type, where lithium sulfide as the cathode provides lithium ions, and lithium-metal-free materials (e.g., graphite, silicon/carbon) function as the anode. Recently, some new lithium-ion sulfur battery systems have also been proposed, and are discussed in this review as well. The lithium-ion sulfur batteries not only maintain the advantage of high energy density because of the high capacities of sulfur and lithium sulfide, but also exhibit the improved safety of the batteries due to a non-lithium-metal in the anode. This review paper aims to track the recent progress in the development of lithium-ion sulfur batteries and summarize the challenges and the approaches for improving their electrochemical performances, including the lithiation methods to prepare lithium-metal-free anodes in anode-type lithium-ion sulfur batteries and the lithium sulfide cathode modification approaches in cathode-type lithium-ion sulfur batteries. Furthermore, the challenges and perspectives for future research and commercial applications have also been enumerated.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium−sulfur (Li−S) batteries are one of the most promising next-generation energy storage systems due to their extremely high energy densities and low cost compared with state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. However, the main obstacles of conventional Li−S batteries arise from the dissolution of lithium polysulfides in organic liquid electrolytes and corresponding safety issues. To address these issues, an effective approach is to replace conventional liquid electrolytes with solid-state electrolytes. In this review, recent progress in the development of solid electrolytes, including solid polymer electrolytes and inorganic glass/ceramic solid electrolytes, along with corresponding all-solid-state Li−S batteries (ASSLSBs) and related interfacial issues at the electrode/electrolyte interface, will be systematically summarized. In addition, the importance of various solid-state lithium ion conductors in ASSLSBs will be discussed followed by detailed presentations on the development of various forms of sulfur-based positive electrode materials (e.g., elemental sulfur, lithium sulfide, metal sulfides, lithium thiophosphates, and lithium polysulfidophosphates) along with key interfacial challenges at the electrode/solid electrolyte interface (cathode/SE and anode/SE). Abstract:Due to the ever-growing demand for high-density energy storage devices, lithium-ion batteries with a high-capacity cathode and anode are thought to be the next-generation batteries for their high energy density. Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is considered the promising cathode material for its high theoretical capacity, high melting point, affordable volume expansion, and lithium composition. This review summarizes the activation and lithium storage mechanism of Li2S cathodes. The design strategies in improving the electrochemical performance are highlighted. The application of the Li2S cathode in full cells of lithium-ion batteries is discussed. The challenges and new directions in commercial applications of Li2S cathodes are also pointed out.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered highly promising as next-generation energy storage systems due to high theoretical capacity (2600 W h kg −1 ) and energy density (1675 mA h g −1 ) as well as the abundant natural reserves, low cost of elemental sulfur, and environmentally friendly properties. However, several challenges impede its commercialization including low conductivity of sulfur itself, the severe "shuttle effect" caused by lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) during charge-discharge processes, volume expansion effects and sluggish reaction kinetics. As a solution, polar metal particles and their compounds have been introduced as the main hosts for sulfur cathode due to their robust catalytic activity and adsorption capability, effectively suppressing the "shuttle effect" of LiPSs. Bimetallic alloys and their compounds with multi-functional properties exhibit remarkable electrochemical performance more readily when compared to single-metal materials. Well-designed bimetallic materials demonstrate larger specific surface areas and richer active sites, enabling simultaneous high adsorption capability and strong catalytic properties. The synergistic effect of the "adsorption-catalysis" sites accelerates the adsorption-diffusion-conversion process of LiPSs, ultimately achieving a long-lasting Li-S battery. Herein, the latest progress and performance of bimetallic materials in cathodes, separators, and interlayers of Li-S batteries are systematically reviewed. Firstly, the principles and challenges of Li-S batteries are briefly analyzed. Then, various mechanisms for suppressing "shuttle effects" of LiPSs are emphasized at the microscale. Subsequently, the performance parameters of various bimetallic materials are comprehensively summarized, and some improvement strategies are proposed based on these findings. Finally, the future prospects of bimetallic materials are discussed, with the hope of providing profound insights for the rational design and manufacturing of high-performance bimetallic materials for LSBs.

Abstract:In this review, we begin with a brief discussion of the operating principles and scientific/technical challenges faced by the development of lithium/sulfur cells. We then introduce some recent progress in exploring cathodes, anodes, and electrolytes for lithium/sulfur cells. In particular, several effective strategies used to enhance energy/power density, obtain good efficiencies, and prolong cycle life will be highlighted. We also discuss recent advancements in techniques for investigating electrode reactions in real time and monitoring structural/morphological changes of electrode materials under cell operating conditions to gain a better understanding of the mechanistic details of electrode processes. Finally, the opportunities and perspective for future research directions will be discussed.
