Abstract:A fine-tuned mordenite was prepared to overcome the low selectivity of tert-amyl anthracene production in the direct alkylation of anthracene. Herein, a series of boric acid-modified Fe-Zr mordenite materials were prepared, and tert-amyl anthracene was smoothly and efficiently obtained over these catalysts. The boron sites in modified catalyst promoted the alcohol dehydrogenation, which benefited the reaction conversion. Moreover, the existence of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites was the key in alkylation reaction, making 1.0B-Fe-Zr/MOR good reactivity (Conv. 47.8%, Sel. 91.4%). Calculated results correlated the products properties with catalyst structures, verifying that boric acid-modified Fe-Zr/MOR was a successful shape-selective catalyst. The present work opens a new frontier for a sustainable and high-selective method to process anthracene alkylation.

Abstract:A series of boron phosphate (BPO4) modified ion-exchanged CsX zeolites, prepared by impregnation method, were characterized by a variety of means and utilized as catalysts for the side-chain alkylation of toluene with methanol. Both BPO4 and Cs species are highly dispersed on the surface/channel of the BPO4/CsX zeolites. The addition of a small amount of BPO4 has no obvious effect on the basic strength of catalysts, but decreases the number of basic sites slightly. Meanwhile, more weak Lewis acidic sites appear with the increasing BPO4 loading. Compared with CsX, the BPO4 modified CsX catalysts exhibit lower ability for the adsorption/activation of methanol to produce surface intermediates like formaldehyde, unidentate formate and bidentate formate. Catalytic reaction results showed that modification of CsX with boron phosphate can improve both the conversion of toluene and the selectivity of styrene. The inhibition role in producing the unfavorable bidentate formate might be a key factor for finally resulting in the improvement of the catalytic properties of BPO4/CsX catalysts for the side-chain alkylation of toluene with methanol.

Abstract:Activation and desorption of the hydrogen atom in the toluene methyl is a restrictive step for side-chain alkylation of toluene with methanol (SATM). In this work, two dehydrogenation strategies were used to improve the catalytic performance, dehydrogenation component Cu was introduced in PAl-NaX catalyst as well as the acid-base property was adjusted by changing NaOH loading amount. The relationship among the percentage of acid-base sites, low valence Cu species and the catalytic performances was investigated combined with the multiple characterizations, like X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) of NH 3 and CO 2 , etc. together with ternary regression analysis. It is found that the dehydrogenation component Cu, especially low valence Cu species, promotes the selectivity of side-chain alkylation products to a certain degree, but base sites play an even more critical role in enhancing it.

Abstract:Desulfurization of FCC gasoline by alkylation over a solid acid catalyst is considered to be a viable and less costly path to meet environmental regulations of sulfur emissions. However, side reactions in this process lead to significant levels of coke which greatly reduce the catalyst lifetime. In this paper, experiments were designed in both real and simulated gasoline to investigate the effect of different concentrations of methanol on the catalytic behavior of HY zeolite in the alkylation process for desulfurization. The result showed that the presence of an appropriate amount of methanol in FCC gasoline (about 5 wt % of the feed) appeared to improve the catalyst selectivity for the alkylation of thiophenic compounds by decreasing the conversion of olefins to oligomers, which was favorable for prolonging the catalyst lifetime. Moreover, a deep investigation was also carried out by a theoretical calculation method of DFT to explain the reason for the advantageous effect of methanol on the catalyst performance in the desulfurization process.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroboration of terminal alkynes with HBpin to access alpha-alkenyl boronates with good regioselectivity and atom economy is reported. A new ligand has been developed for the cobalt hydride catalyst that has been used for a unique Markovnikov selective insertion of terminal alkynes into metal hydride bond. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance to deliver valuable alkene derivatives.

Abstract:Heteroatom doping is a promising approach to improve the properties of carbon materials for customized applications. Herein, a series of Cu catalysts supported on boron-doped carbon nanotubes (Cu/xB-CNTs) were prepared for the hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) to ethanol. The structure and chemical properties of boron-doped catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, N2 O pulse adsorption, CO chemisorption, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, and NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, which revealed that doping boron into CNT supports improved the Cu dispersion, strengthened the interaction of Cu species with the CNT support, introduced more surface acid sites, and increased the surface area of Cu0 and especially Cu+ sites. Consequently, the catalytic activity and stability of the catalysts were greatly enhanced by boron doping. 100 % DMO conversion and 78.1 % ethanol selectivity could be achieved over the Cu/1B-CNTs catalyst, the ethanol selectivity of which was almost 1.7 times higher than that of the catalyst without boron doping. These results suggest that doping CNTs with boron is an efficient approach to improve the catalytic performance of CNT-based catalysts for hydrogenation of DMO. The boron-doped CNT-based catalyst with improved ethanol selectivity and catalytic stability will be helpful in the development of efficient Cu catalysts supported on non-silica materials for selective hydrogenation of DMO to ethanol.
Boron Modified Bifunctional Cu/SiO2 Catalysts with Enhanced Metal Dispersion and Surface Acid Sites for Selective Hydrogenation of Dimethyl Oxalate to Ethylene Glycol and Ethanol

Abstract:Boron (B) promoter modified Cu/SiO2 bifunctional catalysts were synthesized by sol-gel method and used to produce ethylene glycol (EG) and ethanol (EtOH) through efficient hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO). Experimental results showed that boron promoter could significantly improve the catalytic performance by improving the structural characteristics of the Cu/SiO2 catalysts. The optimized 2B-Cu/SiO2 catalyst exhibited excellent low temperature catalytic activity and long-term stability, maintaining the average EG selectivity (Sel.EG) of 95% at 190 °C, and maintaining the average EtOH selectivity (Sel.EtOH) of 88% at 260 °C, with no decrease even after reaction of 150 h, respectively. Characterization results revealed that doping with boron promoter could significantly increase the copper dispersion, enhance the metal-support interaction, maintain suitable Cu+/(Cu+ + Cu0) ratio, and diminish metallic copper particles during the hydrogenation of DMO. Thus, this work introduced a bifunctional boron promoter, which could not only improve the copper dispersion, reduce the formation of bulk copper oxide, but also properly enhance the acidity of the sample surface, so that the Cu/SiO2 sample could exhibit superior EG selectivity at low temperature, as well as improving the EtOH selectivity at high temperature.

Abstract:The secondary reaction of toluene is difficult to be suppressed in benzene alkylation with methanol over conventional acidic zeolite catalysts. Moreover, the formation of coke yet remains a challenging problem. In this study, Na-Y zeolites were modified with ammonium carbonate (AC), citric acid (CA) and caesium nitrate(CN) to evaluate the alkylation of benzene with methanol, which was also characterized by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, N2 adsorption and Py-IR. For the Na-Y treated with AC-CA-CN, not only the catalytic selectivity for the alkylation of benzene with methanol was improved (the total selectivity of toluene and xylene was 97.9% and toluene selectivity was 86.4%), but also the quantity of coke was greatly decreased.

Abstract:The hydrogenolysis of C–C bonds is one of the most important processes in the petroleum industry. These transformations typically rely on heterogeneous catalysts and take place at high temperatures and high pressures with limited selectivity. Employing homogeneous transition metal catalysts, while allowing the hydrogenolysis of C–C bonds to proceed under much milder conditions, is only suitable for substrates containing strained C–C bonds or directing groups. Here we report that a borenium complex can catalyse the selective hydrogenolysis of unstrained C(aryl)–C(alkyl) bonds of alkylarenes in the absence of directing groups at ambient temperature, affording the corresponding alkanes and arenes. Mechanistic studies suggest a reaction pathway that involves a synergistic activation of dihydrogen by the borenium complex and alkylarenes, followed by retro-Friedel–Crafts reaction to cleave the C(aryl)–C(alkyl) bonds. The synthetic utility of this protocol is demonstrated by the conversion of post-consumer polystyrene into valuable benzene and phenylalkanes with mass recovery rates above 90%. Hydrogenolysis of unactivated C(aryl)–C(alkyl) bonds is a challenging task even in the presence of metal catalysts. Now, an approach using a boron catalyst is described that facilitates the hydrogenolysis of alkylarenes under mild conditions, and its utility is demonstrated by degrading polystyrene waste into benzene and phenylalkanes.

Abstract:Bifunctional catalysts are widely applied for many important reactions as the synergetic effect of two types of active sites remarkably improves catalysis performance. However, their bifunctionality has not been fully exploited since the proximity of bifunctional catalysts is hard to control. Herein, we demonstrate a bifunctional ZSM-5@Al2O3 catalyst with a core-shell structure and a nano-scale proximity by in-situ growth of γ-Al2O3 nanosheets on the surface of ZSM-5 crystals for methanol conversion. The nano-scale proximity endows the catalyst with higher reaction activity and C2–C3 olefins yield (53 %) in comparison to the catalysts with micro-scale proximity (20 %) and millimeter-scale proximity (27 %), which can be attributed to the fluent transport of the reaction intermediates between two types of active sites. This strategy for constructing bifunctional catalysts with nano-scale proximity is conducive to understanding the relationship between proximity and catalytic performance in methanol conversion.

Abstract:Modified Y type catalyst (M-Y) shows great potential for the preparation of toluene attribute to catalyst topology and synergistic effect of Lewis acid and Brönsted acid in the alkylation reaction. However, it still remains a big challenge to build a reaction mechanism. Thereby, based on the study of HZSM-5, H-beta and M-Y catalysts structure and physical properties, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption/desorption, Fourier transform infrared absorption spectra and Pyridine adsorption infrared. The activity of catalysts was tested in benzene alkylation with methanol and was found to be in the following increasing order: Na-Y (no effect) < H-Y << HZSM-5 < H-beta < M-Y.

Abstract:A series of boron isomorphously framework-substituted ZSM-5 (Bx–Al–ZSM-5, Si/Al=200, B/Al=X) were synthesized and used to selectively transform methanol to propylene (MTP). The catalytic stability can be significantly influenced by B incorporation. In comparison with the conventional ZSM-5, the B1–Al–ZSM-5 catalyst afforded a 7-time-long catalytic life under a space velocity of WHSV 1.8h−1 (700h for B1–Al–ZSM-5 and 100h for ZSM-5, respectively). The enhancement of catalytic stability can be attributed to the increase of weak acid sites on the ZSM-5 catalysts.

Abstract:The development of stable, highly active, and inexpensive catalysts for the ozone catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is challenging but of great significance. Herein, the micro-coordination environment of Al in commercial Y zeolite was regulated by a specific dealumination method and then the dealuminated Y zeolite was used as the support of Cu-Mn oxides. The optimized catalyst Cu-Mn/DY exhibited excellent performance with around 95% of toluene removal at 30 °C. Besides, the catalyst delivered satisfactory stability in both high-humidity conditions and long-term reactions, which is attributed to more active oxygen vacancies and acidic sites, especially the strong Lewis acid sites newly formed in the catalyst. The decrease in the electron cloud density around aluminum species enhanced electron transfer at the interface between Cu-Mn oxides. Moreover, extra-framework octahedrally coordinated Al in the support promoted the electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI). Compared with single Mn catalysts, the incorporation of the Cu component changed the degradation pathway of toluene. Benzoic acid, as the intermediate of toluene oxidation, can directly ring-open on Cu-doped catalysts rather than being further oxidized to other byproducts, which increased the rate of the catalytic reaction. This work provides a new insight and theoretical guidance into the rational design of efficient catalysts for the catalytic ozonation of VOCs.

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) catalyst has recently been reported to be highly selective in oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) for olefin production. In addition to propene, ethylene also forms with much higher overall selectivities to C2-products than to C1-products. In this work, we report that the reaction pathways over the h-BN catalyst are different from the V-based catalysts in ODHP. Oxidative coupling reaction of methyl, an intermediate from the cleavage of C─C bond of propane, contributes to the high selectivities to C2-products, leading to more C2-products than C1-products over the h-BN catalyst. This work not only provides insight into the reaction mechanisms involved in ODHP over the boron-based catalysts but also sheds light on the selective oxidation of alkanes such as direct upgrading of methane via oxidative upgrading to ethylene or CH x O y on boron-based catalysts.
