Abstract:Heteroatom doping is a promising approach to improve the properties of carbon materials for customized applications. Herein, a series of Cu catalysts supported on boron-doped carbon nanotubes (Cu/xB-CNTs) were prepared for the hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) to ethanol. The structure and chemical properties of boron-doped catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, N2 O pulse adsorption, CO chemisorption, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, and NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, which revealed that doping boron into CNT supports improved the Cu dispersion, strengthened the interaction of Cu species with the CNT support, introduced more surface acid sites, and increased the surface area of Cu0 and especially Cu+ sites. Consequently, the catalytic activity and stability of the catalysts were greatly enhanced by boron doping. 100 % DMO conversion and 78.1 % ethanol selectivity could be achieved over the Cu/1B-CNTs catalyst, the ethanol selectivity of which was almost 1.7 times higher than that of the catalyst without boron doping. These results suggest that doping CNTs with boron is an efficient approach to improve the catalytic performance of CNT-based catalysts for hydrogenation of DMO. The boron-doped CNT-based catalyst with improved ethanol selectivity and catalytic stability will be helpful in the development of efficient Cu catalysts supported on non-silica materials for selective hydrogenation of DMO to ethanol.
Boron Modified Bifunctional Cu/SiO2 Catalysts with Enhanced Metal Dispersion and Surface Acid Sites for Selective Hydrogenation of Dimethyl Oxalate to Ethylene Glycol and Ethanol

Abstract:Boron (B) promoter modified Cu/SiO2 bifunctional catalysts were synthesized by sol-gel method and used to produce ethylene glycol (EG) and ethanol (EtOH) through efficient hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO). Experimental results showed that boron promoter could significantly improve the catalytic performance by improving the structural characteristics of the Cu/SiO2 catalysts. The optimized 2B-Cu/SiO2 catalyst exhibited excellent low temperature catalytic activity and long-term stability, maintaining the average EG selectivity (Sel.EG) of 95% at 190 °C, and maintaining the average EtOH selectivity (Sel.EtOH) of 88% at 260 °C, with no decrease even after reaction of 150 h, respectively. Characterization results revealed that doping with boron promoter could significantly increase the copper dispersion, enhance the metal-support interaction, maintain suitable Cu+/(Cu+ + Cu0) ratio, and diminish metallic copper particles during the hydrogenation of DMO. Thus, this work introduced a bifunctional boron promoter, which could not only improve the copper dispersion, reduce the formation of bulk copper oxide, but also properly enhance the acidity of the sample surface, so that the Cu/SiO2 sample could exhibit superior EG selectivity at low temperature, as well as improving the EtOH selectivity at high temperature.

Abstract:In the present work, a Pd catalyst supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is successfully synthesized and its property as the anode material for borohydride oxidation is investigated. Compared with other carbon-supported Pd catalysts, the Pd/MWCNT catalyst exhibits improved polarization properties due to its smaller Pd particles dispersing homogeneously on carbon nanotubes. The hydrogen evolution behavior on the Pd/activated carbon sample is found to be very sensitive to the concentrations of NaOH and NaBH4 in the solution. On the other hand, borohydride oxidation on Pd/carbon black and Pd/MWCNT displays reaction mechanisms near the 4e stoichiometry. It is thus supposed that the primary direct borohydride oxidation on Pd may be a 4e reaction. The simultaneous electro-oxidation of adsorbed hydrogen occurs conditionally, depending on its relative activity with the direct oxidation of BH4−.

Abstract:Cu catalyst often subjects to low stability due to chemical state transformation during carbon-oxygen hydrogenation reaction. In the present work, the copper catalysts embedded in N-doped carbon microsphere (Cu@NC) were fabricated by one-pot hydrothermal method and applied in dimethyl oxalate (DMO) hydrogenation to methyl glycolate (MG). The optimized Cu@10NC catalyst exhibited an excellent stability with DMO conversion of 80.1% and MG selectivity of 80.3% during 220 h long-term evaluation under 1.9 MPa, 210 °C, H 2 /DMO molar ratio of 80 and WHSV of 0.8 g DMO ·g Cu − 1 ·h − 1 , beneficial from the stable Cu + ratio and confinement effect of carbon support during the reaction. The Cu dispersion and Cu + proportion can be finely controlled by varying the N-doping content due to the enhanced interaction between Cu and carbon microspheres. Particularly, graphitic-N is primarily accountable for Cu dispersion, while pyridinic-N is dominantly responsible for the stabilization of Cu + species.

Abstract:The influence of boron introduction on the performance of 20wt.% Cu/HMS catalysts for the catalytic hydrogenation of dimethyloxalate was systematically investigated. It is shown that the boron loading, boron source and the preparation method all have great effect on the catalytic behaviors of the catalyst. Characterization methods including N2-physisorption, X-ray diffraction, H2-temperature-programmed reduction, N2O titration, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were carried out to elucidate the structure evolution of the catalyst with the introduction of boron. Experimental results showed that the B2O3 modified catalyst prepared via the ammonia-evaporation-induced synthesis method exhibited the highest conversion and ethylene glycol selectivity because of the higher metallic copper surface area and copper dispersion. The optimum Cu/B mole ratio, which strongly affects the surface composition of the catalyst, was found to be 2/1. 100% DMO conversion and 98% EG selectivity could be obtained over the CuB/HMS(2/1) catalyst under 2.5h−1 liquid hour space velocity, which is almost four times higher than that of the one without boron introduction.

Abstract:Utilizing hexagonal boron nitride (BN) with elevated surface area and numerous exposed edges as a support can significantly enhance the catalytic performance. In this study, defect-rich boron nitride sheet (BNS) was facilely prepared via ball-milling of BN and a Cu/BNS catalyst was developed for dimethyl oxalate (DMO) hydrogenation to ethylene glycol (EG). The treated BNS owned increased edge defects and surface area. These edge defects can disperse and further stabilize the Cu species via the formation of interfacial B-O-Cu bonds, resulting in the high dispersion of Cu species and enhanced interaction between the metal and the support, and thus contributing to the anchoring of the Cu nanoparticles. Consequently, the Cu/BNS catalyst exhibited remarkable catalytic performance and stability, with a high EG selectivity of 98.84 % and stability of 750 h. This work provides a new perspective for the development of two-dimensional boron nitride as a support material for heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) is a key step in the economical and eco-friendly synthesis of high value-added alcohols from syngas. In this study, a pyridinic-N-rich ultrathin carbon was employed as a support to construct a silicon-free Cu catalyst for highly efficient DMO hydrogenation. N-doped ultrathin carbon support with a two-dimensional structure provided sufficient anchoring sites for Cu species. More critically, abundant pyridinic-N (72.3%) maintained Cu in an electron-deficient state via electronic interactions between Cu and the carbon support, thereby preserving the vital active sites Cu + during the hydrogen-rich reaction. The new silicon-free Cu catalyst (Cu/0.1 N-UC) demonstrated an ethanol selectivity that was 1.8 times higher than that of the commonly used Cu/SiO 2 catalyst. Additionally, the Cu/0.1 N-UC catalyst displayed superior stability and could convert the primary product to ethylene glycol by adjusting the reaction temperature. This study offers a novel approach for the development of promising silicon-free Cu catalysts for DMO hydrogenation.

Abstract:The addition of boron (B) as a promoter to the Ag/SiO2 catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) to methyl glycolate (MG) was investigated. A comparison of the preparation method for incorporation of B found that the addition during the ammonia evaporation deposition–precipitation synthesis of the Ag/SiO2 catalyst (Ag–B/SiO2) was inferior to incipient wetness impregnation introduction of the Ag/SiO2 catalyst (B/Ag/SiO2). Moreover, the effects of B contents (0.5–5 wt %) on the physicochemical properties and catalytic performance of the B/Ag/SiO2 catalysts were investigated by XRF, N2-physisorption, XRD, FTIR, TEM, EDX mapping, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, XPS, and catalytic testing. The results indicated that both the catalytic activity and stability of the Ag/SiO2 catalyst were noticeably enhanced after the introduction of B. The B/Ag/SiO2 catalyst with 1 wt % B showed the best catalytic performance of 100% DMO conversion and 88.3% MG selectivity, which could be attributed to the highest dispersion of the active metal and the smallest Ag particle size stabilized by the strong interaction between silver and boron species.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Converting the syngas derived dimethyl oxalate (DMO) intermediate to versatile simple diols (Ethylene glycol, EG) has been deemed as a promising chemical synthesis technology, owing to the economic and sufficient raw materials virtues. Nonetheless, the optimizing catalyst for this route is still challenging. In this work, The Cu doped Co/ZnO based CoCu/ZnO catalysts for dimethyl oxalate (DMO) selective hydrogenation to ethylene glycol (EG) were successfully synthesized from the oxalic precipitation method derived precursor undergo thermal process. RESULTS The Cu content shows significant influence on the Co dispersion and chemical features, further determining the resultant structural and morphology properties of the as‐prepared samples. For DMO gas‐phase hydrogenation, the CoCu20/ZnO catalyst prepared in presence of the 20.0 wt.% Cu additive exhibits 100.0 % DMO conversion and 93.0% EG yield, superior to that of the other catalysts due to adequate active Co0 sites released adjacent to the Cu species. Moreover, the CoCu/ZnO catalyst shows outstanding thermal stability in DMO selective hydrogenation for more than 120 h. CONCLUSIONS The H2 activation ability and capability of the surface Co species depends critically on the Cu content, further regulating the reaction pathways of the DMO hydrogenation. Abstract:Mo/HMCM-22 is one of the candidate catalysts for realizing methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) reaction. However, serious coke deposition would deactivate the catalyst, resulting in a rapid decrease of aromatics yield. Here, we adjusted the acidity of MCM-22 zeolite by doping boron into the framework. Boron species replace some of framework aluminum and prompt aluminum to locate in sinusoidal channel. It optimizes the ratio of strong/weak Brønsted acid, as well as enhances the interaction between molybdenum and HMCM-22 to facilitate the dispersion of molybdenum species. After 10 h of MDA reaction, the yield of aromatics over Mo/H[B]MCM-22 (SBR 30) is 3.5 times higher than that of Mo/H[B]MCM-22 (SBR 5). It decreases by only 4.8 % in comparison to the initial yield. Meanwhile, Mo/H[B]MCM-22 (SBR 30) shows significantly better resistance to coke deposition. Therefore, the established structure–activity relationships provide valuable insights for future research on the modification of zeolite acidity in methane dehydroaromatization reaction.

Abstract:Cu/ZrO2 catalysts with or without boron modification were prepared, characterized, and evaluated in the hydrogenation of sec-butyl acetate (SBA) to 2-butanol. Cu/ZrO2 catalysts were active for the hydrogenation of SBA but suffered serious deactivation due to the leaching of Cu. Introduction of boron onto Cu/ZrO2 catalysts improved the dispersion of Cu species, the surface Cu+/Cu-0 ratios, and the catalyst stability owing to the enhanced interaction between Cu species and support. However, it decreased the intrinsic activity of Cu towards the hydrogenation of SBA and complicated the reaction network by accelerating acid-catalyzed isomerization and transesterification processes as a result of the strengthened acidity by boron. A further kinetic analysis unravelled that the reaction orders for SBA and H-2 are 0.58 and 0.83, respectively, and the apparent activation energy is 47 kJ/mol. Such understanding of the structural evolution of CuB/ZrO2 catalysts and the consequent catalytic performances with the B contents may provide insights useful for the design of Cu catalysts with desirable stability for hydrogenation of SBA and other esters.
Alkaline earth modified activated carbon supported Cu catalysts with enhanced selectivity in the hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate to methyl glycolate

Abstract:In this work, the effect of alkaline earth metal modification on the catalytic performance of activated carbon supported Cu was investigated. The experimental results showed that the introduction of Ca and Sr improved the selectivity of methyl glycolate (MG) during hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) in gas phase. The optimal loading amount of Ca was 0.1 wt%, and under the optimal conditions (temperature 240 °C, pressure 2 MPa, hydrogen–ester ratio of 80, feedstock 15% DMO methanol solution, and WLHSV DMO = 0.9 h −1 ) the selectivity of MG was as high as 94%, and the conversion of DMO was 97%. The optimal loading of Sr was 0.2 wt% with MG selectivity up to 89% and DMO conversion of 98%. The results of catalyst characterization showed that both Ca and Sr modifications were beneficial to further reduce the particle size of Cu, improve the dispersion of Cu, increase the basicity of the catalyst, and improve the stable presence of Cu + during the reaction process. Cu + was beneficial to the stabilization of the MG species, in which Cu + accounted for more in the Ca-modified catalysts Cu + /(Cu + + Cu 0 ) = 0.65, and in the Sr-modified ones Cu + /(Cu + + Cu 0 ) = 0.51. Therefore, both Ca and Sr modified catalysts showed improvement in the selectivity of MG.

Abstract:Carbon-oxygen bond hydrogenation serves as a versatile fundamental reaction extensively applied in chemicals synthesis, but rational design of heterogeneous catalysts with satisfactory catalytic performance and stability remains a big challenge. Herein, a ZrO2-x modified Cu nanocatalyst with unique interfacial structure Cu-O-Zr3+-Vö (Vö denotes oxygen vacancy), was elaborately designed and prepared via a facile in situ structural transformation from layered double hydroxide precursors, confirmed by a comprehensive study including HADDF-STEM, in situ EXAFS and quasi in situ XPS measurements. The optimized catalyst (Cu/ZrO2-x-S3) exhibits an extremely high catalytic performance toward dimethyl oxalate (DMO) hydrogenation to ethylene glycol (EG), with a yield of 99.5 %. Notably, the turnover frequency (TOF) value and space time yield of EG reach up to 42.4 h−1 and 1.05 gEG⋅gcat−1⋅h−1, respectively. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest level compared with previously reported Cu-based catalysts under similar conditions. In addition, the in situ investigations (in situ DMO-FTIR, in situ DMO-EXAFS) and catalytic evaluations substantiate interfacial sites serve as active center: the Zr3+-Vö facilitates adsorption and activation of CO/CO groups; whilst H2 molecule undergoes dissociation at the interfacial Cu species, followed by hydrogen spillover onto Cu-O-Zr for hydrogenation of activated CO/CO bonds. This interfacial synergistic catalysis offers a new reaction pathway with decreased activation energy, accounting for the resulting superior catalytic performance, which can be extended to other carbon-oxygen bonds hydrogenation systems.

Abstract:Growing interest has been shown in controlling the selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation to produce specific compounds and fuels with additional value. However, it is challenging to selectively generate target products due to the complexity and diversity of the products in CO2 hydrogenation reaction. Herein, we reported a finding in the CO2 hydrogenation reaction: selectivity could be totally reversed by just altering support interface types on Cu-based catalysts. Cu/ZnO-MgO catalysts showed high CH3OH selectivity, while Cu/ZnO-CoO catalysts exhibited good selectivity of CH4. According to in-depth characterization, varied basicity sites most likely as results of the different support interface types. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations pointed that support interface types altered the adsorption position of H2COO* on catalysts and affect the adsorption and activation of intermediates, and thus resulted in noticeably varied product selectivity. This study demonstrated the value of regulating CO2 hydrogenation selectivity via support interface types on Cu-based catalysts, which can aid in the rational design of catalysts for not only CO2 hydrogenation but also other significant reactions.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO2 offers a promising method to mitigate the green-house gas and recycle CO2 into value-added chemicals. Cu-based aerogels hold the potential as high-performance catalysts due to the three-dimensional morphology, high porosity, and self-supporting skeletons. Herein, we successfully applied Cu/Nb2O5 composite aerogel into CO2 hydrogenation, which achieved high production rate and selectivity towards methanol. Further mechanism study demonstrated that abundant interfaces between Cu and Nb2O5 were formed throughout the porous networks of Cu/Nb2O5 aerogel, acting as the active sites for the adsorption, activation, and selective conversion of CO2. Besides, the production of methanol was via the formate pathway over Cu/Nb2O5. This work opens up an appealing approach for the design of efficient catalysts with rich active sites for hydrogenation of CO2.

Tuning CO 2 hydrogenation selectivity via support interface types on Cu-based catalysts

Abstract:Growing interest has been shown in controlling the selectivity of CO 2 hydrogenation to produce specific compounds and fuels with additional value. However, it is challenging to selectively generate target products due to the complexity and diversity of the products in CO 2 hydrogenation reaction. Herein, we reported a finding in the CO 2 hydrogenation reaction: selectivity could be totally reversed by just altering support interface types on Cu-based catalysts. Cu/ZnO-MgO catalysts showed high CH 3 OH selectivity, while Cu/ZnO-CoO catalysts exhibited good selectivity of CH 4 . According to in-depth characterization, varied basicity sites most likely as results of the different support interface types. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations pointed that support interface types altered the adsorption position of H 2 COO* on catalysts and affect the adsorption and activation of intermediates, and thus resulted in noticeably varied product selectivity. This study demonstrated the value of regulating CO 2 hydrogenation selectivity via support interface types on Cu-based catalysts, which can aid in the rational design of catalysts for not only CO 2 hydrogenation but also other significant reactions.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction towards hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) provides a green alternative route for H 2 O 2 production, but it lacks efficient catalysts to achieve high selectivity and activity simultaneously under industrial-relevant production rates. Here we report a boron-doped carbon (B-C) catalyst which can overcome this activity-selectivity dilemma. Compared to the state-of-the-art oxidized carbon catalyst, B-C catalyst presents enhanced activity (saving more than 210 mV overpotential) under industrial-relevant currents (up to 300 mA cm −2 ) while maintaining high H 2 O 2 selectivity (85–90%). Density-functional theory calculations reveal that the boron dopant site is responsible for high H 2 O 2 activity and selectivity due to low thermodynamic and kinetic barriers. Employed in our porous solid electrolyte reactor, the B-C catalyst demonstrates a direct and continuous generation of pure H 2 O 2 solutions with high selectivity (up to 95%) and high H 2 O 2 partial currents (up to ~400 mA cm −2 ), illustrating the catalyst’s great potential for practical applications in the future.
