Abstract:Calcium (Ca2+) is an important major cation in seawater, which is closely related to the oceanic biogeochemistry cycle. Direct and accurate determination of Ca2+ concentration is required for a more comprehensive study of the carbonate system in seawater. Due to the high background concentration of Ca2+ in seawater and small variances of Ca2+ during CaCO3 precipitation and dissolution process, a precision of better than 0.1% (of approximately ± 10 μmol/kg) is very much desired for carbonate chemistry related studies. In this study, a simple, non-toxic and labor-saving technique using ion chromatography (IC) has been developed to determine Ca2+ in seawater with an overall precision of better than 0.1%. Due to lack of available commercial calcium standard in seawater matrix, IAPSO seawater was selected as the reference after calibration. This proposed method can get a result within 15 min and only requires a small sample volume (∼1 ml). The concentrations and flow rates of the eluent have been optimized to achieve the best chromatographic separation (20 mmol/L and 1.0 mL/min were selected in this study). Our work suggests that sample dilutions by weighing have no discernible effect on Ca2+ determinations. However, the measured Ca2+ concentration shows a linear decrease with the increasing Mg/Ca ratio in samples, which could be corrected by a derived formula to achieve high accuracy within 0.1%. This optimized method has been applied to the analysis of Ca2+ distribution in Southwest Indian Ocean and the laboratory study on the calcite precipitation in seawater.

Abstract:Quantification of organolead compounds in environmental water is an essential task considering much higher toxicity and bioavailability of organolead species than inorganic plumbic ions. However, the speciation of ultra-trace organolead compounds at sub ng L-1 levels is challengeable for current instruments incorporating high performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) and even offline enrichment that offer detection limits around several to tens of ng L-1. In this paper, an online solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled HPLC-ICP-MS method was developed for speciation analysis of trace lead in water. Graphene oxide bounded silica particles (GO@SiO2) was utilized as the SPE adsorbent because of its superior performance over graphene bounded silica particles and commercial C18 packing particles. High enrichment factors (1603 for TML and 1376 for TEL) were obtained when lead species in 10 mL sample was adsorbed by 1 mM sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) preconditioned GO@SiO2 at 10 mL min(-1) and then eluted by 5 mu L of 5 mM SDBS. Because of the highly efficient preconcentration, detection limits were downscaled to be 0.018 for TML and 0.023 ng L-1 for TEL with relative standard deviations below 5%. Additionally, the proposed method also yielded rapid separation of Pb(II), TML and TEL (8 min) by using green mobile phases (aqueous solutions of 5 mM sodium 1-pentanesulfonate at pH 2.5 with/without 4 mM tetrabutylammounium hydroxide). Upon successful application to fresh water, TML and TEL were only presented in the river water whereas Pb(II) was only existed in the tap water, along with accuracy validation by good spiked recoveries (93-106%). Abstract:Toxicity, mobility, bioavailability and biofunctions of chromium, cadmium, mercury and lead are heavily dependent upon their specific chemical forms, leading to a high demand to metal speciation analysis rather than total quantification. Simultaneous speciation analysis of multiple metal(loid)s is attractive to a large sample capacity containing unstable analytes due to its economic and environmental advantages over the conventional single elemental strategies. In this work, an analytical method integrating online solid phase extraction into high performance liquid chromatography interfaced with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to simultaneously preconcentrate and quantify Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb forms in pg L-1 levels in water was developed. Cr (III + VI), Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II), methylmercury (MeHg), ethylmercury (EtHg), and trimethyl (TML) and triethyl lead (TEL) were captured by the C18 adsorbent (equilibrated with 10 mL of 1.0 mM 2-hydroxyethanethiol at 10 mL min-1) and eluted by mobile phase (5.0 mM Cys at pH 2.0), then completely separated on the C18 column within 8.0 min and eventually determined by ICP-MS. Low limits of detection (0.001-0.007 ng L-1) and quantification (0.003-0.023 ng L-1), good relative standard deviations (<4%) and high enrichment factors (827-2656 folds) were obtained with good linearities. Three reference materials of total cadmium (GBW08602), total mercury (GBW08603) and total lead (GBW08601) in water were analyzed by the developed method to validate the accuracy with good agreement with certified values and satisfactory recoveries (92-100%). This method was proved feasible by the determination of Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb compounds in drinking water, river water, pond water and tap water.

Abstract:An online enrichment-separation system of C-18 and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) with now injection (C18-FI-ICP/MS) was established for the determination of trace heavy metals in seawater. The optimized experimental parameters including pH,C-18 column, concentration of methol in elute and the velocity of elute were investigated, This system was applied to the online preconcentration, separation and determination of trace heave metals in seawater samples successfully. The detection limit (3 sigma) for Cd, Ph, Co, Ni and Zn was 0.03, 0.09, 0.1, 0.1, 0.3 mug/L respectively. The RSD of Cd, Ph, Co, Ni, and Zn for six measurements of seawater was 6.8%, 3.4%, 1.3%, 2.6%, 0.5%, respectively. The accuracy was verified with spiked recovery test. The recovery for five elements was 91.3%, 95.1%, 100.4%, 100.3%, 95.2%, respectively.

Abstract:Considering the unique characteristics of rare earth elements (REEs), the presence of REEs beyond specific limits will adversely affect the environment and it can be employed as a powerful probe for investigating hydrogeochemical processes. This requires sensitive determination of REEs in natural seawater. A matrix separation and pre-concentration technique using the mini-column packed with crab shell particles (CSPs) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) as a means of determination has been developed. The aim of the proposed method was to simultaneously determine 16 REEs (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) at trace or ultra-trace concentrations in seawater. The biosorption capacity of CSPs was found to achieve 1.246–1.250 mg g −1 for all elements. In order to optimize performance of the method, the effects of analytical parameters concerning oscillation time, solution pH, salt concentration and eluent concentration were explored. Under the optimal conditions, the detection limits of REEs ranged 0.0006–0.0088 μg L −1 , and relative standard deviations ( n = 7) varied between 0.55 and 1.39%. The accuracy of developed method was evidenced by applying it to the analysis of REEs in seawater samples, with the overall recoveries at a level of 95.3 and 104.4%. Together, this work provides a promising and cost-effective CSPs-based pretreatment approach for REEs detection in sea environment.

Abstract:Quantification of ultra-trace inorganic and organic species of lead and mercury in unpolluted environmental water is crucial to estimate the mobility, toxicity and bioavailability and interactions. Simultaneous pre-concentration of Pb and Hg species in pg L-1 levels followed by multi-elemental speciation analysis makes great sense to a large set of unstable samples because of time advantages. Herein simultaneous enrichment and speciation analysis of ultra-trace lead and mercury in water was developed by online solid-phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SPE-HPLC-ICP-MS) for this aim. Pb(II), trimethyl lead (TML), triethyl lead (TEL), Hg(II), methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) were baseline separated in 11 min under gradient elution using 5 mM L-cysteine (Cys) at pH 2.5 in the 0-1 and 4-15 min and 5 mM Cys + 0.5 mM tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide solution at pH 2.5 in the 1-4 min. Lead and mercury species in 10 mL intact water samples were adsorbed on a 1 cm C18 enrichment column preconditioned with 10 mL of 1 mM 2-mercaptoethanol at 10 mL min-1, and then directly desorbed by the mobile phases. High enrichment factors (459 for Pb(II), 1248 for TML, 1627 for TEL, 2485 for Hg(II), 1984 for MeHg and 1866 for EtHg) were obtained with good relative standard deviations (<5%), leading to low LODs (0.001-0.011 ng L-1) and LOQs (0.004-0.036 ng L-1). Good accuracy of this method was validated by two certified reference materials of total lead in water (GBW08601) and total mercury in water (GBW08603) along with spiked recoveries (89-93%). The method was applied to analyze trace lead and mercury species in river, lake, tap and rain water, and purified and mineral water. Inorganic lead of 13-68 ng L-1 and inorganic mercury of 21-49 ng L-1 were measured in the nine water samples whereas TML, TEL and MeHg were not detected with 2-5 ng L-1 EtHg presented only in one river water and tap water. Abstract:This work establishes a hyphenated methodology coupling HPLC with ICP-MS for simultaneous speciation analysis of arsenic, mercury and lead for the first time. Four arsenicals (As(III), DMA, MMA and As(V)), four mercurials (Hg(II), MeHg, EtHg and PhHg) and three lead compounds (Pb(II), TML and TEL) were simultaneously analyzed within only 8 min with acceptable resolution (2.0-8.2 for As, 1.6-6.1 for Hg and 2.7-4.0 for Pb). The detection limits were 0.036-0.20 for As-species, 0.023-0.041 for Hg-species, and 0.0076-0.14 mu g L-1 for Pb-species. The developed method was applied for the measurement of five lotus seed samples, indicating the presence of DMA (19.6-28.2 mu g kg(-1)), TML (1.4-2.9 mu g kg(-1)), MeHg (1.2-4.8 mu g kg(-1)) and EtHg (0.8-2.2 mu g kg(-1)). This method provides a promising tool for studying the toxic, metabolic and bioavailable behaviors of arsenic, mercury and lead.

Abstract:A method combining inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was developed for multielement determination of 50 species of major, minor, micro, and trace, rare earth, and rare elements in geological samples. The geological samples of stream sediment, soil, and rock were dissolved with HCl-HNO3-HF-HClO4. The instrumental operating parameters were optimized, and the best analytical parameters were determined. The influences of ICP-OES and ICP-MS interferences were investigated. The optimal spectral lines and best isotopes were chosen, and the internal standard elements of 185Re and 103Rh were selected to compensate for signals drifting and for matrix effects. Therefore, the standard solutions were prepared by simultaneously dissolving the certified reference material (CRM) with the samples. The elements of Ti, V, Mn, Ba, Sr, Li, Be, Sc, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb were determined by both ICP-MS and ICP-OES, which show a good correlation between measured values. The methods were used to determine the CRM of stream sediment (GBW07301a, GBW07365), soil (GBW07408, GBW07452) and rock (GBW07107, GBW07121 and GBW07122), and the determined results were in agreement with the certified values for simultaneous determination of 50 elements for bulk geological samples.

Abstract:Ion-pair reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (RP-HPLC-ICP-MS) has been used to determine two inorganic iodine species (I- and IO3-) and two organic iodinated amino acids (MIT and DIT) in seaweed and seawater samples within 5 min. The mobile phase used for a reversed phase C-18 column was as follows: 2.0 mM tetraethylammonium hydroxide, 10 mM L-phenylalanine and 1% methanol (pH 8.9). Values of 1.5 mL min(-1) for the flow rate of the mobile phase and 25 degrees C for the column temperature were selected for rapid separation of iodine species. The detection limits for IO3-, I-, MIT and DIT were 0.061, 0.052, 0.079 and 0.24 mu g L-1, each, and the repeatabilities of peak height and peak area (20 mu g L-1 for iodide and iodate, 40 mu g L-1 for MIT, 100 mu g L-1 for DIT) were all lower than 4%. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method was successfully applied for the speciation analysis of iodine in seaweed and seawater samples. Recoveries of IO3,- I-, MIT and DIT in seaweed and seawater samples were between 90 and 110%. All results prove its advantages including high sensitivity, environmentally friendly, low time consumption, which are beneficial for routine analysis of iodine speciation in environmental and food fields.
Study on ICP-AES Determination Method for 18 Trace Elements in Highly Calcareous Sediments from the South China Sea

Abstract:Calcium and magnesium often interfere the measurements of other elements in using inductive coupling plasm atomic emission spectrometer(ICP-AES) to analyze the trace elements in highly calcareous sediments from the South China Sea.In this paper,a series of procedures including optimization of instrument operating parameters,deduction of background,correction of spectral line interference and matching of datum are proposed for eliminating the element interference and the datum effects of calcium and magnesium and raising the sensitivity and precision of this method.An ICP-AES method suitable for determining the trace element contents in highly calcareous marine sediments is established by making a great deal of experiments on sediment samples from the South China Sea and verifying the experimental results with state standard samples.The detection limit and relative standard deviation(RSD) of the method are 1.55 to 271 μg/L and 4.54%(n=6),respectively.

Abstract:A hyphenated method for mercury speciation analysis by the coupling of high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with the online strong anion exchange column (SAX) preconcentration was developed. The Hg analytes (Hg(+), MeHg, EtHg and Hg(2+)) were absorbed on the SAX column preconditioned with sodium 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate, and then rapidly eluted (less than 16s) by 5μL 3% (v/v) 2-mercaptoethanol. The enrichment factors of 1025 for Hg(+), 1084 for MeHg, 1108 for EtHg and 1046 for Hg(2+) were obtained using 6mL sample in a 1.5-min enrichment procedure. Rapid separation of the four mercurial compounds was achieved within 5min on a 50-mm C18 column using 0.5% (v/v) 2-mercaptoethanol as the mobile phase. The detection limits for Hg(+), MeHg, EtHg and Hg(2+) were 0.015, 0.010, 0.009 and 0.016ng L(-1), each, and the relative standard deviations of peak height and peak area (5ng L(-1) for each Hg species) were all below 5%. Mercury speciation in three freshwater, two drinking water and two seawater samples were then analyzed by the proposed method. MeHg and Hg(2+) concentrations down to 0.14 and 0.56ng L(-1) were detected in the drinking waters.

Abstract:In the present study, ICP-MS with a new hybrid simultaneous preconcentration combining solid phase extraction using chelating resin and iron hydroxide coprecipitation in one batch at a single pH adjustment (pH 6.0) were developed for multielement determination of trace metal ions in seawater. In multielement determination, the present method makes it possible to determine Cr(III), As(V), Se (IV), and other 14 trace metal elements (Ti, V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, Ge, Cd, Sb, Sn, W, Pb, and U) in seawater. Moreover, for speciation analyses of Cr, As, and Se, the pH dependence on recovery for the different chemical forms of Cr, As, and Se was investigated. In speciation analyses, Cr, As, and Se were determined as the total of Cr (III) and a part of Cr (VI), total of As (III) and As (V), and Se(IV), respectively. Determination of total of Se and Cr(VI) remains as future task to improve. Nevertheless, the present method would have possibility to develop as the analytical method to determine comprehensively most metal elements in all standard and guideline values in quality standard in environmental water in Japan, that is, most toxic metal elements in environmental water.
Elimination of Matrix Effect and Spectral Interference by Two Compactly Combined Separations in the Determination of Cd in Geological Samples with High Mo, Zr or Sn Contents by Icp-Ms

Abstract:The determination of Cd in geological samples with high Mo, Zr or Sn contents by ICP-MS suffered from matrix effects and severe spectral interferences. In this work solvent and solid phase extractions ( SPE) were combined and both matrix and spectral interference free determinations were realized. After solvent extraction with an acidic extractant, interferences from Sn and Zr were reduced over 1000 fold, and Mo about 250 fold, while matrix elements could be e. ectively removed by a SPE column. A linear working curve could be obtained between Cd concentrations of 0.2 - 20 mu g L-1, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9992. Cd recoveries in both separation systems were shown to be near 100%, and a total enrichment factor could reach 22. Feasibility of the established method was demonstrated by analyzing three soil geological standard reference materials with high Mo, Zr or Sn contents. The results showed that the established method was accurate, fast, low in procedural blank value, and good in Cd recovery.
Determination of ultra-trace level Cr(VI) in seawater using large-volume direct injection by LC-ICP-MS with in-line matrix elimination

Abstract:In this study, we aimed to improve the detection of hexavalent chromium (Cr( VI )) in seawater by using large volume injection and in-line matrix elimination device in conjunction with LC-ICP-MS. Firstly, the sample solution was introduced into the chromatographic separation system through a 1000 μL quantitative loop. Then, the chromatographically separated solution was precisely introduced into the ICP-MS for analysis at the time of the Cr( VI ) peak (2.8–4.2 min) by the valve switch in the in-line matrix elimination. And the separation of Cr( VI ) was performed on a Dionex IonPac AG7 analytical column (50 mm × 4 mm, 10 μm) with 60 mmol L −1 NH 4 NO 3 as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0 mL min −1 for 5 min. The detection limits (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) were found to be 0.002 and 0.007 μg L −1 , respectively. Method precision and accuracy were satisfactory at 3.5% relative standard deviations (RSDs) for 0.1 μg L −1 of Cr( VI ), and 90% ∼ 105% recoveries for real samples. The developed method was successfully applied for the analysis of Cr( VI ) in environmental seawater samples.

Abstract:In the near future it is necessary to establish a disposal for high level nuclear waste (HLW) in deep and stable geological formations. In Germany typical host rocks are salt or claystone. Suitable clay formations exist in the south and in the north of Germany. The geochemical conditions of these clay formations show a strong difference. In the northern ionic strengths of the pore water up to 5M are observed. The determination of parameters like Kd values during sorption experiments of metal ions like uranium or europium as homologues for trivalent actinides onto clay stones are very important for long term safety analysis. The measurement of the low concentrated, not sorbed analytes commonly takes place by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A direct measurement of high saline samples like seawater with more than 1% total dissolved salt content is not possible. Alternatives like sample clean up, preconcentration or strong dilution have more disadvantages than advantages for example more preparation steps or additional and expensive components. With a small modification of the ICP-MS sample introduction system and a home-made reprogramming of the autosampler a transient analysing method was developed which is suitable for measuring metal ions like europium and uranium in high saline sample matrices up to 5M (NaCl). Comparisons at low ionic strength between the default and the transient measurement show the latter performs similarly well to the default measurement. Additionally no time consuming sample clean-up or expensive online dilution or matrix removal systems are necessary and the analysation shows a high sensitivity due to the data processing based on the peak area.

Abstract:A new sorbent, maleic acid grafted polytetrafluoroethylene fiber (MA-PTFE), was prepared and evaluated for on-line solid-phase extraction coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for fast, selective, and sensitive determination of (ultra)trace rare earth elements (REEs) in environmental samples. The REEs in aqueous samples at pH = 3.0 were selectively extracted onto a microcolumn packed with the MA-PTFE fiber, and the adsorbed REEs were subsequently eluted on-line with 0.9 mol l−1 HNO3 for ICP-MS determination. The new sorbent extraction system allows effective preconcentration and separation of the REEs from the major matrix constituents of alkali and alkali earth elements, particularly their separation from barium that produces considerable isobaric interferences of 134Ba16O1H+, 135Ba16O+, 136Ba16O1H+, and 137Ba16O+ on 151Eu+ and 153Eu+. With the use of a sample loading flow rate of 7.4 ml min−1 for 120 s preconcentration, enhancement factors of 69–97 and detection limits (3s) of 1–20 pg l−1 were achieved at a sample throughput of 22 samples h−1. The precision (RSD) for 16 replicate determinations of 50 ng l−1 of REEs was 0.5–1.1%. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of (ultra)trace REEs in sediment, soil, and seawater samples.

Abstract:Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been employed to determine the rare earth elements (REEs) in soils. For the prompt sample decomposition, a microwave digestion was successfully used with a mixture of HF + HCl + HNO3 + EDTA. The potential of the method was evaluated by the determination of REEs in Standard Reference: Materials (GSS-2, GSS-4). The results agreed well with the certified values. The accuracy, dilution factors, spectroscopic interferences and matrix suppression effects were studied in detail. Precision was better than 5%. The experimental results showed that the proposed method was simple, precise and accurate.

Abstract:Two analytical techniques, atomic absorption spectroscopy and ion chromatography, have been used to analyse the heavy element content in water and sediments from the Ismaelia Canal, Egypt. The water samples were collected from a depth of 1.5 m below the surface while the pH of the samples was adjusted by nitric acid to prevent the adsorption of the elements onto the walls of the sample container. The elements studied were copper, lead, iron, nickel, cobalt, cadmium and manganese. For the analysis using ion chromatography, two different eluants, pyridine dicaroboxylic acid and oxalic acid, were used. Agreement in the concentrations of the elements was obtained between ion chromatography and atomic absorption spectroscopy measurements.

Abstract:This paper presents new quantitative data for the spectral interferences obtained by high resolution 40.68 MHz radial viewing inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (HR-ICP-OES) in the determination of Zn, Cd, Sb, Cu, Mn, Pb, Sn, Cr, U, and Ba in environmental materials in the presence of a complex matrix, containing Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, and Ti. The Q -concept for quantification of spectral interferences was used. The optimum line selection for trace analysis of a variety of multicomponent matrices requires the choice of prominent lines, which are free or negligibly influenced by line interference problems. The versatility of Q -concept as basic methodology was experimentally demonstrated in the determination of trace of elements in soil and drinking water. The detection limits are lower in comparison with corresponding threshold concentration levels for soil and drinking water in accordance with environmental regulations. This paper shows the possibilities of present day ICP-OES equipment in the direct determination of trace elements (without preconcentration of impurities) in environmental samples.
