Abstract:The electricity grids with high stability and reliability require a desired balance of energy supply and demand. As the typical sustainable energy, the intermittent solar and wind would result in electricity grid instability. Aqueous batteries have been considered to be appealing stationary power sources for sustainable energy. Advanced aqueous batteries can address the safety concern derived from the employment of highly toxic and flammable organic solvents in lithium-ion batteries together with the poor cycle life presented in commercialized aqueous rechargeable batteries. This review will introduce several kinds of newly developed aqueous batteries, including aqueous Li (Na)-ion batteries, zinc anode-based batteries (Zn-metal oxide, Zn-air, Zn–Br2, and Zn–Ni(OH)2 batteries), and Ni(OH)2 cathode-based batteries (Ni(OH)2–MH and Ni(OH)2-organic composite batteries). The materials, mechanisms, and battery techniques for the above aqueous batteries will be introduced in detail. The status and challenges for the application of aqueous batteries will also be discussed. The status for advanced aqueous batteries are summarized in detail. The challenges for the application of aqueous batteries are discussed.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries have garnered significant attention in recent years as a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries for energy storage, owing to their inherent safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. This study offers a comprehensive review of recent advancements, persistent challenges, and the prospects of aqueous batteries, with a primary focus on energy density compensation of various battery engineering technologies. Additionally, cutting-edge high-energy aqueous battery designs are emphasized as a reference for future endeavors in the pursuit of high-energy storage solutions. Finally, a dual-compatibility battery configuration perspective aimed at concurrently optimizing cycle stability, redox potential, capacity utilization for both anode and cathode materials, as well as the selection of potential electrode candidates, is proposed with the ultimate goal of achieving cell-level energy densities exceeding 400 Wh kg-1. Aqueous batteries show promise for enhancing portable high-energy devices by increasing specific capacity and battery voltage. Researchers have proposed a dual-compatibility battery configuration to optimize redox potential and capacity utilization in both anode and cathode materials, aiming for high cell-level energy density after evaluating current battery technology's impact on energy density.image

Abstract:Strengthening water (H2O) interaction is a universal strategy for reducing H2O reactivity, yet often at the expense of kinetics. Here, we unveiled the controllable modulation of molecular structures in aqueous electrolytes and their tailorable electrochemical performance in high-energy aqueous batteries. The H-bond properties and special distributions are identified as crucial parameters to decouple the electrochemical stability and the transport properties of Li+ in the aqueous-based electrolytes. It is found that the mildly solvating ethylene glycol diethyl ether (DEE) is capable of balancing both high-energy Li-ion batteries with a greatly extended electrochemical window of 1.4-5.2 V vs. Li+/Li and high ionic conductivity of 7.2 mS cm(-1) at room temperature with a low salt concentration (1.57 mol/L). LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 aqueous cells deliver outstanding cycling performance over 300 cycles at 1C. One Ah pouch cell is demonstrated with a high energy density of 76.76 Wh kg(-1) at 0.2C and stable cycling performance at room temperature and a low temperature of -20 degrees C. This work provides new insights and strategies to design advanced electrolytes for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries have become a hot research topic due to their advantages of high safety, low cost, and easy manufacturing. The pursuit of higher energy density for aqueous batteries is the key to their applications that can compete with current commercial batteries. A comprehensive overview focusing on the research progress in high energy density aqueous batteries is discussed. Rechargeable aqueous batteries are considered to be one of the most effective energy storage technologies to balance the cost‐efficiency, safety, and energy/power demands. The further progress of aqueous batteries with high energy density is needed to meet the ever‐increasing energy‐storage demands. This review highlights the strategies proposed so far to pursue the high energy density aqueous batteries, including the aspects of the electrolytes (from concentrated to dilute), the electrode chemistry (from inserted to converted), the cathode materials (from inorganic to organic), the anode materials (from compound to metallic), and the battery configurations (from integrated to decoupled). Critical appraisals of the emerging electrochemistry are presented for addressing the key issues in boosting the energy densities. Finally, the authors render insights into the future development of high‐energy aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries hold significant promise as a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries for energy storage applications. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the charge storage mechanism, electrode materials, electrolyte considerations, and electrode interface challenges in aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The complex charge storage mechanism involving zinc ion movement between the cathode and zinc metal anode is discussed in detail. Anode and cathode material selections and design strategies are explored, highlighting their pivotal roles in determining battery performance, energy density, cycle lifespan, and stability. The critical influence of electrolyte choice and design on battery performance is also elucidated, emphasizing the interplay between high ionic conductivity, stability, temperature range, and cost. The paper further delves into the challenges and advancements related to optimizing the electrode interface, addressing issues such as dendrite growth, electrode passivation, and side reactions. Finally, future research directions and strategies to overcome current limitations are outlined, underscoring the potential of aqueous zinc-ion batteries as a viable and sustainable energy storage solution.

Abstract:Aqueous ion batteries are receiving increasing attention as a means of achieving carbon neutrality due to their advantages in terms of low cost, safety, and environmental friendliness. Unlike aqueous multivalent metal cation batteries, monovalent metal cations in aqueous ion batteries have been favored by researchers for their lower reduction potentials, smaller hydration ion radii and hydration enthalpies, and faster ion migration rates. However, the research on aqueous monovalent cation batteries is still in the experimental exploration stage due to several limitations. The lower operating voltage and energy densities of aqueous monovalent cation batteries are mainly due to the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of the electrolyte, limited compatible electrode materials, and unresolved challenges such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This paper aims to address the issues related to aqueous monovalent lithium/sodium ion batteries. A specific discussion will be provided on the electrode materials, the dissolution structure of the electrolyte, and the design strategy of the battery. Additionally, this paper will also present insights into the challenges faced during the research process and the prospects for the development of aqueous lithium/sodium ion batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries using inorganic compounds as electrode materials are considered a promising solution for grid-scale energy storage, while wide application is limited by the short life and/or high cost of electrodes. Organics with carbonyl groups are being investigated as the alternative to inorganic electrode materials because they offer the advantages of tunable structures, renewability, and they are environmentally benign. Furthermore, the wide internal space of such organic materials enables flexible storage of various charged ions (for example, H+, Li+, Na+, K+, Zn2+, Mg2+, and Ca2+, and so on). We offer a comprehensive overview of the progress of organics containing carbonyls for energy storage and conversion in aqueous electrolytes, including applications in aqueous batteries as solid-state electrodes, in flow batteries as soluble redox species, and in water electrolysis as redox buffer electrodes. The advantages of organic electrodes are summarized, with a discussion of the challenges remaining for their practical application.

Abstract:Aqueous aluminum−ion batteries have many advantages such as their safety, environmental friendliness, low cost, high reserves and the high theoretical specific capacity of aluminum. So aqueous aluminum−ion batteries are potential substitute for lithium−ion batteries. In this paper, the current research status and development trends of cathode and anode materials and electrolytes for aqueous aluminum−ion batteries are described. Aiming at the problem of passivation, corrosion and hydrogen evolution reaction of aluminum anode and dissolution and irreversible change of cathode after cycling in aqueous aluminum−ion batteries. Solutions of different research routes such as ASEI (artificial solid electrolyte interphase), alloying, amorphization, elemental doping, electrolyte regulation, etc. and different transformation mechanisms of anode and cathode materials during cycling have been summarized. Moreover, it looks forward to the possible research directions of aqueous aluminum−ion batteries in the future. We hope that this review can provide some insights and support for the design of more suitable electrode materials and electrolytes for aqueous aluminum−ion batteries.

Abstract:Organic electrode materials take advantages of potentially sustainable production and structural tunability compared with present commercial inorganic electrode materials. However, their applications in traditional rechargeable batteries with nonaqueous electrolytes suffer from the premature failure and safety concerns. In comparison, aqueous rechargeable batteries based on organic electrode materials have received extensive attentions in recent years for low-cost and sustainable energy storage systems due to their inherent safety. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary on the recent progress in advanced organic electrode materials for aqueous rechargeable batteries. We start from the overview of working principles and general design strategies of organic electrode materials in aqueous rechargeable batteries. Then the research advances of organic electrode materials in various aqueous rechargeable batteries are highlighted in terms of charge carriers (monovalent ions, multivalent ions, and anions). We emphasized the characteristics of organic electrode materials in various charge carriers. Finally, the critical challenges and future efforts of aqueous organic rechargeable batteries are discussed. More organic electrode materials with better electronic conductivity and fast reaction kinetics are still needed to build advanced aqueous batteries for commercial applications.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have attracted extensive attention ascribing to affordability, intrinsic safety, and environmental benignity, which have revealed ideal alternative to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage systems . Nevertheless, the design of aqueous zinc-ion batteries is plagued by obstacles, such as dissolution of cathode materials, dendrites and side reactions of anode, and electrolyte consumption as compared to commercial lithium-ion batteries. In this regard, from the perspective of predominant issues encountered with aqueous zinc-ion batteries, this comprehensive review aims to systematically summarize the design principles and optimization strategies associated with the cathode, anode, electrolyte, and separator. Meanwhile, the impact of design strategies on electrochemistry, and the relationship between issues and strategies are revealed for guiding the rational design of advanced aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Eventually, a series of critical challenges, constructive solutions, and future trends toward cathode, anode, electrolyte and separator are dedicatedly proposed. We envisage that this review would endow researchers a readily accessible means to rapidly acquaint with optimization strategies and design principles for advanced aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Aqueous rechargeable batteries (ARBs) have become a lively research theme due to their advantages of low cost, safety, environmental friendliness, and easy manufacturing. However, since its inception, the aqueous solution energy storage system has always faced some problems, which hinders its development, such as the narrow electrochemical stability window of water, poor percolation of electrode materials, and low energy density. In recent years, to overcome the shortcomings of the aqueous solution-based energy storage system, some very pioneering work has been done, which also provides a great inspiration for further research and development of future high-performance aqueous energy storage systems. In this paper, the latest advances in various ARBs with high voltage and high energy density are reviewed. These include aqueous rechargeable lithium, sodium, potassium, ammonium, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum batteries. Further challenges are pointed out. Graphic Abstract Aqueous can be better in terms of safety, friendliness, and energy density.

Abstract:Although the lithium-ion battery using aqueous solution as electrolyte has low energy density, it may solve both the safety and large cost problems for lithium-ion batteries that use highly toxic and flammable organic solvents, and the poor cycling life associated with commercialized aqueous rechargeable batteries including lead-acid and nickel-metal hydride batteries, showing promising application in stationary power sources for smart grid. The present work reviews the latest advances in the exploration and development of battery systems and related materials. Also the main challenges in this field are briefly discussed and some constructive views and possible solutions are provided. On the other hand, present work also reviews the recent progress of the application of Li-metal anode, and analyzes its advantage, disadvantage and challenge.

Abstract:Amidst the global trend of advancing renewable energies toward carbon neutrality, energy storage becomes increasingly critical due to the intermittency of renewables. As an alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), aqueous batteries have received growing attention for large-scale energy storage due to their economical and safe features. Despite the fruitful achievements at the material level, the reliability and lifetime of aqueous batteries are still far from satisfactory. Alike LIBs, integrating smartness is essential for more reliable and long-life aqueous batteries via operando monitoring and automatic response to extreme abuses. In this review, recent advances in sensing techniques and multifunctional battery-sensor systems together with self-healing methods in aqueous batteries is summarized. The significant role of artificial intelligence in designing and optimizing aqueous batteries with high efficiency is also highlighted. Ultimately, it is extrapolated toward the future and present the humble perspective for building smarter aqueous batteries.

Abstract:As one of the most promising electrochemical energy storage systems, aqueous batteries are attracting great interest due to their advantages of high safety, high sustainability, and low costs when compared with commercial lithium-ion batteries, showing great promise for grid-scale energy storage. This invited tutorial review aims to provide universal design principles to address the critical challenges at the electrode–electrolyte interfaces faced by various multivalent aqueous battery systems. Specifically, deposition regulation, ion flux homogenization, and solvation chemistry modulation are proposed as the key principles to tune the inter-component interactions in aqueous batteries, with corresponding interfacial design strategies and their underlying working mechanisms illustrated. In the end, we present a critical analysis on the remaining obstacles necessitated to overcome for the use of aqueous batteries under different practical conditions and provide future prospects towards further advancement of sustainable aqueous energy storage systems with high energy and long durability.

Abstract:An increasingly growing market for electricity energy will be projected to double by 2050. Renewable energies, such as solar and wind, can be an effective way to address the challenge. However, the incompatibility between generation and consumption of electricity arises a considerable trouble when a huge amount of electricity coming from renewable sources finds no users, which could result in miserable failure of an aging grid. To secure the grid, the utilization and development of efficient energy storage technologies are highly demanded. Among the energy storage system (ESS), aqueous Zinc (Zn) batteries based organic material cathode have been regarded as an attractive candidate on account of its outstanding superiorities compared with inorganic compounds. Although it has gained huge success in lab-scale, the long-standing challenges like inferior energy density, low power density, narrow operation temperature range and poor cycling life still restrict their practical application in aqueous Zn batteries (AZBs). In this minireview, we firstly provide a comprehensive insight into the different storage mechanisms that are proposed in varieties of organic cathodes. Based on the clear understanding on mechanisms, we further summarize the major progress and offer several promising research directions on promoting electrochemical performance of Zn-organic batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries are promising alternatives to non-aqueous lithium-ion batteries due to their safety, environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness. However, their energy density is limited by the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of water. The "Water-in-salts" (WIS) strategy is an effective method to broaden the ESW by reducing the "free water" in the electrolyte, but the drawbacks (high cost, high viscosity, poor low-temperature performance, etc.) also compromise these inherent superiorities. In this review, electrolyte and interphase engineering of aqueous batteries to overcome the drawbacks of the WIS strategy are summarized, including the developments of electrolytes, electrode-electrolyte interphases, and electrodes. First, the main challenges of aqueous batteries and the problems of the WIS strategy are comprehensively introduced. Second, the electrochemical functions of various electrolyte components (e.g., additives and solvents) are summarized and compared. Gel electrolytes are also investigated as a special form of electrolyte. Third, the formation and modification of the electrolyte-induced interphase on the electrode are discussed. Specifically, the modification and contribution of electrode materials toward improving the WIS strategy are also introduced. Finally, the challenges of aqueous batteries and the prospects of electrolyte and interphase engineering beyond the WIS strategy are outlined for the practical applications of aqueous batteries. Abstract:<p>With increasing demands for safe, high capacity energy storage to support personal electronics, newer devices such as unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as the commercialization of electric vehicles, current energy storage technologies are facing increased challenges. Although alternative batteries have been intensively investigated, lithium (Li) batteries are still recognized as the preferred energy storage solution for the consumer electronics markets and next generation automobiles. However, the commercialized Li batteries still have disadvantages, such as low capacities, potential safety issues, and unfavorable cycling life. Therefore, the design and development of electromaterials toward high‐energy‐density, long‐life‐span Li batteries with improved safety is a focus for researchers in the field of energy materials. Herein, recent advances in the development of novel organic electrolytes are summarized toward solid‐state Li batteries with higher energy density and improved safety. On the basis of new insights into ionic conduction and design principles of organic‐based solid‐state electrolytes, specific strategies toward developing these electrolytes for Li metal anodes, high‐energy‐density cathode materials (e.g., high voltage materials), as well as the optimization of cathode formulations are outlined. Finally, prospects for next generation solid‐state electrolytes are also proposed.</p>

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries currently hold the largest share of the electrochemical energy storage market, and they play a major role in the sustainable energy transition and industrial decarbonization to respond to global climate change. Due to the increased popularity of consumer electronics and electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries have quickly become the most successful rechargeable batteries in the past three decades, yet growing demands in diversified application scenarios call for new types of rechargeable batteries. Tremendous efforts are made to developing the next-generation post-Li-ion rechargeable batteries, which include, but are not limited to solid-state batteries, lithium–sulfur batteries, sodium-/potassium-ion batteries, organic batteries, magnesium-/zinc-ion batteries, aqueous batteries and flow batteries. Despite the great achievements, challenges persist in precise understandings about the electrochemical reaction and charge transfer process, and optimal design of key materials and interfaces in a battery. This roadmap tends to provide an overview about the current research progress, key challenges and future prospects of various types of rechargeable batteries. New computational methods for materials development, and characterization techniques will also be discussed as they play an important role in battery research.

Abstract:Building a low-carbon society supported by sustainable energy is a worldwide topic. The aqueous lithium-ion battery (LIB) has been demonstrated to be one of the most promising stationary power sources for sustainable energies such as wind and solar power. The aqueous LIB may solve both the safety problem associated with the lithium-ion batteries which use highly toxic and flammable organic solvents, and the poor cycling life associated with commercialized aqueous rechargeable batteries including lead-acid and nickel-metal-hydride systems. During the past decades, many efforts have been made to improve the performance of the aqueous lithium-ion battery. The present work reviews the latest advances in the exploration and development of battery systems and relative materials. Also the main approaches, achievements, and challenges in this field are briefly commented on and discussed.
