Abstract:A theoretical model is established to describe the kinetic processes and laser mechanism for a nanosecond-pulse exciplex pumped Cs vapor laser (XPCsL). A new simulation method is proposed to solve a set of non-stationary rate equations considering high energy levels and the results of simulation are consistent with the experimental data. The effects of cell temperature, pump energy and buffer gas on the output laser pulses are presented and analyzed in detail, which reveal the unique properties of nanosecond-pulse XPCsL.

Abstract:Prior studies on electron emission show possibly beneficial effects of nanoscale phenomena on energy-conversion characteristics. For example, recent work has shown that the electric field around a nanoscale field emission device can increase the average energy of emitted electrons. This geometric effect could be useful in cooling devices based on the Nottingham effect. We consider here the hypothesis that nanoscale effects can favorably influence the energy-conversion efficiency and capacity of thermionic and field emission devices. Required improvements in experimental and computational tools for characterizing such effects include new methods of measuring electron energy distributions (EEDs) from nanoscale emitters and improved modeling of transport between bulk and quantum-confined materials. Accurate emission modeling requires calculation of a self-consistent solution to Schrodinger's equation and Poisson's equation. A particularly promising approach is the non-equilibrium Green's function (NF-GF) formalism. Using NEGF, tractable solutions can be obtained for complex quantum problems because of several features inherent to the approach. For emission modeling, the primary benefit of the NEGF is that boundaries can be treated as bulk sources, which eliminates the need for periodic boundary conditions and enables the coupling of transport between bulk and confined materials. Recent work on EED measurements reveals indications of quantum confinement, as shown by the multiple peaks in the energy distribution. This paper includes representative simulation results and associated electron energy distribution measurements that identify interesting and potentially useful features of thermally excited electron emission phenomena. The paper concludes with recommendations for further study and engineering development.

Abstract:The calculation method for light emission efficiency splits external quantum efficiency (EQE) into internal quantum efficiency (IQE) and light extraction efficiency (LEE) independently. Consequently, the IQE connected to Purcell factor and the LEE are calculated separately. This traditional method ignores the interplays between the Purcell factor and transmittance coefficient in spectral domain, which all strongly depend on emitting directions. In this work, we propose a new figure of merit to describe the light emission process accurately by using the direction-dependent Purcell factor and transmittance coefficient simultaneously. We use a specific LED structure as a numerical example to illustrate the calculation method and optimization procedure.

Abstract:We report the design of a solid-state, micron-sized hemispherical cavity that yields significantly enhanced extraction efficiency with modest Purcell enhancement from embedded quantum emitters. A simple analytical model provides a guideline for the design and optimization of the structure, while finite-difference time-domain simulations are used for full analysis of the optimum structure. Cavity modes with up to 90% extraction efficiency, a Purcell enhancement factor >2, and a quality factor of ≈50 are achieved. In addition, Gaussian-like far-field beam profiles with low divergence are exhibited for several modes. These monolithic cavities are promising for solid-state emitters buried in a high dielectric environment, such as self-assembled quantum dots and optically active defects in diamond.

Abstract:Nanoscale quantum optics explores quantum phenomena in nanophotonics systems for advancing fundamental knowledge in nano and quantum optics and for harnessing the laws of quantum physics in the development of new photonics-based technologies. Here, we review recent progress in the field with emphasis on four main research areas: Generation, detection, manipulation and storage of quantum states of light at the nanoscale, nonlinearities and ultrafast processes in nanostructured media, nanoscale quantum coherence, cooperative effects, correlations and many-body physics tailored by strongly confined optical fields. The focus is both on basic developments and technological implications, especially concerning information and communication technology, sensing and metrology, and energy efficiency.

Abstract:Optical and electrical characteristics of AlGaAs lasers with separate confinement heterostructures are modeled by using Synopsys's Sentaurus TCAD, and open source software. We propose a modified exponential $I-V$ dependence to describe electrical properties. A simple analytical, phenomenological model is found to describe optical efficiency, $\eta$, with a high accuracy, by using two parameters only. A link is shown between differential electrical resistivity $r=dU/dI$ just above the lasing offset voltage, and the functional $\eta(U)$ dependence.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanolasers break the diffraction limit for an optical oscillator, which brings new capabilities for various applications ranging from on-chip optical interconnector to biomedical sensing and imaging. However, the inevitably accompanied metallic absorption loss could convert the input power to heat rather than radiations, leading to undesired low external quantum efficiency and device degradation. To date, direct characterization of quantum efficiency of plasmonic nanolasers is still a forbidden task due to its near-field surface plasmon emissions, divergent emission profile, and the limited emission power. Here, we develop a method to characterize the external quantum efficiency of plasmonic nanolasers by synergizing experimental measurement and theoretical calculation. With systematical device optimization, we demonstrate high performance plasmonic nanolasers with external quantum efficiency exceeding 10% at room temperature. This work fills in a missing yet essential piece of key metrics of plasmonic nanolasers. The demonstrated high external quantum efficiency of plasmonic nanolasers not only clarifies the long-standing debate, but also endorses the exploration of them in various practical applications such as near-field spectroscopy and sensing, integrated optical interconnects, solid-state lighting, and free-space optical communication.

Abstract:Crystalline ZnO nanowires were grown on sapphire and silicon substrates using pulsed-laser deposition. The optical properties of nanowire nanolasers, including their absolute light emission intensity and external and internal quantum efficiencies were experimentally determined. The external differential quantum efficiency was measured to be as high as 60% for lasing ZnO nanowires of 7.5 mu m in length, compared to a value of approximately 10% for photoluminescence. The absolute light emission intensity for individual nanowires was found to be in the vicinity of 0.1 mW. By measuring the dependence of external differential quantum efficiency on the cavity length, the internal quantum efficiency of ZnO nanowire nanolasers was determined to be about 85%. Quantum Cascade Surface Emitting Lasers

Abstract:A low-cost single frequency laser emitting in the mid-infrared spectral region and dissipating minimal electrical power is a key ingredient for the next generation of portable gas sensors for high-volume applications involving chemical sensing of important greenhouse and pollutant gases. We propose here a Quantum Cascade Surface Emitting Laser (QCSEL), which we implement as a short linear cavity with high reflectivity coated end-mirrors to suppress any edge emission and use a buried semiconductor diffraction grating to extract the light from the surface. By wafer-level testing we investigate the cavity length scaling, extract mirror reflectivities larger than 0.9, and achieve a pulsed threshold power dissipation of 237 mW for an emission wavelength near 7.5 $\mu$m. Finally, we demonstrate single mode emission with a side-mode suppression ratio larger than 33 dB of a 248 $\mu$m short cavity mounted with the epitaxial layer up and operated in continuous wave at 20 $^\circ$C.

Abstract:In this paper, we design a quantum heat exchanger which converts heat into light on relatively short quantum optical time scales. Our scheme takes advantage of heat transfer as well as collective cavity-mediated laser cooling of an atomic gas inside a cavitating bubble. Laser cooling routinely transfers individually trapped ions to nano-Kelvin temperatures for applications in quantum technology. The quantum heat exchanger which we propose here might be able to provide cooling rates of the order of Kelvin temperatures per millisecond and is expected to find applications in micro- and nanotechnology.

Optimising finite-time photon extraction from emitter-cavity systems

Abstract:We develop methods to find the limits to finite-time single photon extraction from emitter-cavity systems. We first establish analytic upper and lower bounds on the maximum extraction probability from a canonical $\Lambda$-system before developing a numeric method to optimise generic output probabilities from $\Lambda$-systems generalised to multiple ground states. We use these methods to study the limits to finite-time photon extraction and the wavepackets that satisfy them, finding that using an optimised wavepacket ranging between a sinusoidal and exponentially decaying profile can considerably reduce photon duration for a given extraction efficiency. We further optimise the rates of quantum protocols requiring emitter-photon correlation to obtain driving-independent conclusions about the effect of system parameters on success probability. We believe that these results and methods will provide valuable tools and insights for the development of cavity-based single photon sources combining high efficiency and high rate.
