Abstract:A three-dimensional theoretical model for a new measurement of surface photo-displacement in semiconductor materials is presented. In the theoretical model, two additional photothermal effects, i.e., the air-thermal lens effect above the sample surface and the photoreflectance effect of the sample, are taken into account. It is shown that these additional effects can appreciably influence the diffraction pattern and the detected photothermal signal.

Abstract:We recently demonstrated via experiments in hydrogels and at a single air-water interface the photomolecular effect: photons directly cleaving off water molecular clusters in the visible spectrum where bulk water has negligible absorption. To model single interface experiments, here we re-derive generalized boundary conditions for Maxwell equations by assuming a transition region of the electromagnetic fields across the interface, leading naturally to the Feibelman parameters used before to describe surface photoelectric and surface plasmon effects on metals. This generalization leads to modifications of the Fresnel coefficients and an expression for the surface absorptance that can reasonably explain trends in our single-interface experimental data on the angle and polarization dependence of the beam deflection. Our work provides further support for the existence of the photomolecular effect, suggests that surface absorption should exist in many materials, and lays a foundation for assessing the impacts of such surface absorption based on the Maxwell equations.

Abstract:The issue of surface sensitivity and its relationship with the interpretation of spectral features observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments is investigated. Rather than attempt to make an explicit connection to bulk electronic structure calculations, we take the approach of exploring this issue within the natural context of a vacuum-terminated crystalline slab. Doing so, we reconcile the empirical reality of reliable kz fidelity with acute surface sensitivity of this technique. Abstract:With its roots in kinetic theory, the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) cannot only be used to solve complex fluid flows but also radiative transport in volume. The present work derives a novel Fresnel boundary scheme for radiative transport LBM, based on Fresnel's equation, which depicts the partly reflected radiation on surfaces. Driven from a boundary modeling and discussion on the microscopic level, incorporating Fresnel's equation, it is developed a boundary model for the mesoscopic radiative transport LBM. At an intermediate step, the Fresnel's equation is related to well known partial differential (Robin) equations, based on a bottom-up approach where the P1-Approximation is deployed. To connect the novel boundary scheme to the so derived target equation, a Chapman-Enskog expansion is examined in addition. Both techniques together, point out how to interpret microscopic modeling by the means of macroscopic expressions and as a consequence how, to chose simulation parameters according to the specific boundary. The numerical tests suggest that the proposed boundary is first order convergent. The paper closes with a showcase, where the novel boundary method for radiative transport LBM is applied to a setup with multiple LED spots.

Abstract:At a boundary between two transparent, linear, isotropic, homogeneous materials, derivations of the electromagnetic boundary conditions and the Fresnel relations typically proceed from the Minkowski {E,B,D,H} representation of the macroscopic Maxwell equations. However, equations of motion for macroscopic fields in a transparent linear medium can be written using Ampere {E,B}, Chu {E,H}, Lorentz, Minkowski, Peierls, Einstein-Laub, and other formulations of continuum electrodynamics. We present a representation-independent derivation of electromagnetic boundary conditions and Fresnel relations for the propagation of monochromatic radiation through a piecewise-homogeneous, transparent, linear, magneto-dielectric medium. The electromagnetic boundary conditions and the Fresnel relations are derived from energy conservation coupled with the application of Stokes's theorem to the wave equation. Our representation-independent formalism guarantees the general applicability of the Fresnel relations. Specifically, the new derivation is necessary so that a valid derivation of the Fresnel equations exists for alternative, non-Minkowski formulations of the macroscopic Maxwell field equations.

Abstract:Whether photoemission probes surface or bulk properties has long been a topic of interest and debate. This work employs angle-resolved photoemission to map the electronic structure of Ag films of varying thicknesses prepared on Si(111). As expected, the discrete quantum-well states or subbands observed at small thicknesses merge into a continuum as the film thickness approaches the bulk limit. However, a number of discrete states remain isolated within gaps or pockets in the bulk continuum. While these Ag surface states have been predicted previously by calculations, most are experimentally identified herein only for the first time. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2009

Abstract:Applications have been made of the Bloch wave theory to the Bragg case of high energy electron diffraction for a perfect extended surface and for an inclined surface including a regular ordered array of surface steps. A general discussion is given to the boundary problems concerning the difficulties arising from the deficiency in the number of boundary conditions for solving the reflection diffraction problem uniquely, and also from the restriction imposed by the original assumption that the crystal potential ceases suddenly at the external vacuum-crystal interface. The problem has been addressed by referring to a symmetric two beam Bragg case. A method for incorporating the influence of surface potential and structure has been proposed.
Real space Green's function approach to angle resolved resonant photoemission: spin polarization and circular dichroism in itinerant magnets

Abstract:A first principles approach, based on the real space multiple scattering Green's function method, is presented for spin- and angle-resolved resonant photoemission from magnetic surfaces. It is applied to the Fe(010) valence band photoemission excited with circularly polarized X-rays around the Fe L3 absorption edge. When the photon energy is swept through the Fe 2p-3d resonance, the valence band spectra are strongly modified in terms of absolute and relative peak intensities, degree of spin-polarization and light polarization dependence. New peaks in the spin-polarized spectra are identified as spin-flip transitions induced by exchange decay of spin-mixed core-holes. By comparison with single atom and band structure data, it is shown that both intra-atomic and multiple scattering effects strongly influence the spectra. We show how the different features linked to states of different orbital symmetry in the d band are differently enhanced by the resonant effect. The appearance and origin of circular dichroism and spin polarization are analyzed for different geometries of light incidence and electron emission direction, providing guidelines for future experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, diffraction of scalar waves by a screen with a circular aperture is explored, considering the incidence of either a collimated beam or a focused wave, a historical review of the development of the theory is presented, and the introduction of the Fresnel approximation is described. For diffraction by a focused wave, the general case is considered for both high numerical aperture and for finite values of the Fresnel number. One aim is to develop a theory based on the use of dimensionless optical coordinates that can help to determined the general behaviour and trends of different system parameters. An important phenomenon, the focal shift effect, is discussed as well. Explicit expressions are provided for focal shift and the peak intensity for different numerical apertures and Fresnel numbers. This is one application where the Rayleigh–Sommerfeld diffraction integrals provide inaccurate results.

Abstract:When a plane electromagnetic wave in air falls on a flat dielectric boundary, the dielectric body is pulled toward the air as predicted by Poynting a century ago. According to Noether's theorem, the momentum in the direction parallel to the boundary must be conserved among the incident, reflected and transmitted waves. This uniquely determines the expression for the wave momentum in the dielectric medium which agrees with the Minkowski form. The inward force recently predicted and accompanied by Abraham's momentum are not consistent with Fresnel's formulae and basic symmetry principles.

Complex-angle analysis of electromagnetic waves on interfaces

Abstract:Electromagnetic wave is reflected and refracted at interfaces, satisfying Fresnel-Snell law which is required by conservations of energy and momentum. If the incident angle is lower than the critical angle, we can use this Fresnel-Snell law, but the Fresnel-Snell law is modified in the case of existence of dissipation ($\tilde{n} = n + i\kappa, \kappa > 0$) or in the condition of total internal reflection. In the cases, we have to extend the angle of refraction from real number to complex number ($\theta \rightarrow \tilde{\theta} = \theta + i\psi, \psi \neq 0$). In this paper, by using complex-angle approach, we analyse the behaviour of electromagnetic waves in various kind of interfaces: dielectric - dielectric system, dissipative dielectric - dielectric system, and metal - dielectric system. We show that iso-frequency curves in wavenumber space is opened in the case where $n, \kappa > 0$, and closed either when $n \rightarrow 0$ or when $\kappa \rightarrow 0$ ("Lifshitz transition" of electromagnetic waves). Excess momentum (wavenumber) and anomalous spin (circular polarization) emerging with the transition are also discussed.

The $S$-matrix for surface boundary states: an application to photoemission for Weyl semimetals

Abstract:We present a new theory of photoemission for Weyl semimetals. We derive this theory using a model with a boundary surface at $z=0$. Due to the boundary, the self adjoint condition needs to be verified in order to ensure physical solutions. The solutions are given by two chiral zero modes which propagate on the boundary. Due to the Coulomb interaction, the chiral boundary model is in the same universality class as interacting graphene. The interactions cause a temperature dependence of the velocity and and life time. \noindent Using the principle of minimal coupling, we identify the electron-photon Hamiltonian. The photoemission intensity is computed using the $S$-matrix formalism. The $S$-matrix is derived using the initial photon state, the final state of a photoelectron and a hole in the valence band. The photoemission reveals the final valence band dispersion $ \hbar v(\pm k_{y}-k_{0})+\hbar\Omega$ after absorbing a photon of frequency $ \Omega$ ($k_{0}$ represents the shift in the momentum due to the crystal potential). The momentum in the $z$ direction is not conserved, and is integrated out. As a result, the scattering matrix is a function of the parallel momentum . We observe two dimensional contours, representing the $^{"}$Fermi arcs $^{"}$, which for opposite spin polarization have opposite curvature. This theory is in agreement with previous experimental observations.

Abstract:Using the method of Laplace transform the field amplitude in the paraxial approximation is found in the two-dimensional free space using initial values of the amplitude specified on an arbitrary shaped monotonic curve. The obtained amplitude depends on one {\it a priori} unknown function, which can be found from a Volterra first kind integral equation. In a special case of field amplitude specified on a concave parabolic curve the exact solution is derived. Both solutions can be used to study the light propagation from arbitrary surfaces including grazing incidence X-ray mirrors. They can find applications in the analysis of coherent imaging problems of X-ray optics, in phase retrieval algorithms as well as in inverse problems in the cases when the initial field amplitude is sought on a curved surface.

Abstract:We provide a systematic theoretical, experimental, and historical critique of the standard derivation of Fresnel's equations, which shows in particular that these well-established equations actually contradict the traditional, macroscopic approach to electrodynamics in media. Subsequently, we give a rederivation of Fresnel's equations which is exclusively based on the microscopic Maxwell equations and hence in accordance with modern first-principles materials physics. In particular, as a main outcome of this analysis being of a more general interest, we propose the most general boundary conditions on electric and magnetic fields which are valid on the microscopic level.

Abstract:We present a complete derivation of the formula of Smythe [Phys.Rev.72, 1066 (1947)] giving the electromagnetic field diffracted by an aperture created in a perfectly conducting plane surface. The reasoning, valid for any excitating field and any hole shape, makes use only of the free scalar Green function for the Helmoltz equation without any reference to a Green dyadic formalism. We compare our proof with the one previously given by Jackson and connect our reasoning to the general Huygens Fresnel theorem.

Abstract:The conventional formulation of the Fresnel wave and ray surfaces typically involves the implicit use of Euclidian metrics in order to justify treating vectors and covectors as indistinguishable. This tends to disguise the fact that one of the surfaces lives in the cotangent spaces to the spatial (or space-time) manifold, while the other lives in the tangent spaces. Moreover, no mention is made of how to get from tangent spaces to cotangent spaces in the absence of a metric. The following analysis shows how to resolve those issues within the framework of pre-metric electromagnetism. The way that electromagnetic waves imply spatial frames, coframes, and metrics will be explained.

Abstract:The well-known relation for energy conservation at the boundary of two dielectrics R + T = 1 does not hold in the case of lossy systems, if for R and T the conventional relations are used. It has to be corrected to R + T = 1 + Δ. The additional term is derived for the s- and p-components from Maxwell’s equations by proper use of the Poynting vectors. Δ depends on the angle of incidence, the complex refractive indices and the polarization. The correct transmission factor for lossy transitions reads . The correction term is very small for dielectrics used in thin film technology, but becomes important for metallic layers.

Abstract:We present an analytic, Mie theory-based solution for the energy-loss and the photon-emission probabilities in the interaction of spherical nanoparticles with electrons passing nearby and through them, in both cathodoluminescence and electron energy-loss spectroscopies. In particular, we focus on the case of penetrating electron trajectories, for which the complete fully electrodynamic and relativistic formalism has not been reported as yet. We exhibit the efficiency of this method in describing collective excitations in matter through calculations for a dispersive and lossy system, namely a sphere described by a Drude permittivity. Subsequently, we use the analytic solution to corroborate the implementation of electron-beam sources in a state-of-the-art numerical method for problems in electrodynamics, the discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method. We show that the two approaches produce spectra in good mutual agreement, and demonstrate the versatility of DGTD via simulations of spherical nanoparticles characterized by surface roughness. The possibility of simultaneously employing both kinds of calculations (analytic and numerical) facilitates a better understanding of the rich optical response of nanophotonic architectures excited by fast electron beams.

Abstract:Starting with Maxwell’s equations, we derive the fundamental results of the Huygens-Fresnel- Kirchhoff and Rayleigh-Sommerfeld theories of scalar diffraction and scattering. These results are then extended to cover the case of vector electromagnetic fields. The famous Sommerfeld solution to the problem of diffraction from a perfectly conducting half-plane is elaborated. Far-field scattering of plane waves from obstacles is treated in some detail, and the well-known optical cross-section theorem, which relates the scattering cross-section of an obstacle to its forward scattering amplitude, is derived. Also examined is the case of scattering from mild inhomogeneities within an otherwise homogeneous medium, where, in the first Born approximation, a fairly simple formula is found to relate the far-field scattering amplitude to the host medium’s optical properties. The related problem of neutron scattering from ferromagnetic materials is treated in the final section of the paper.

Abstract:Typically the use of the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction formula as a photon propagator is widely accepted due to the abundant experimental evidence that suggests that it works. However, a direct link between the propagation of the electromagnetic field in classical optics and the propagation of photons where the square of the probability amplitude describes the transverse probability of the photon detection is still an issue to be clarified. We develop a mathematical formulation for the photon propagation using the formalism of electromagnetic field quantization and the path-integral method, whose main feature is its similarity with a fractional Fourier transform (FrFT). Here we show that, because of the close relation existing between the FrFT and the Fresnel diffraction integral, this propagator can be written as a Fresnel diffraction, which brings forward a discussion of the fundamental character of it at the photon level compared to the Huygens-Fresnel principle. Finally, we carry out an experiment of photon counting by a rectangular slit supporting the result that the diffraction phenomenon in the Fresnel approximation behaves as the actual classical limit.
