Abstract:This paper presents a summary of the author's recent work on the configuration of spatial structures. To better satisfy architecture and engineering requirements, the paper introduces a technique of reconstructing freestyle 3D objects with grid space structures. With this technique, irregular and complex configurations can be easily modelled, which has a great potential in modelling of sculptures and bionic structures. Then several new types of deployable structures, which are based on linkage mechanisms including Bricard linkages and double chain linkages, are proposed. The kinetic behaviour of these deployable structures is investigated by geometrical analysis. And their possible applications in retractable roofs are also explored. Meanwhile, the paper proposes a practical application of structures with changeable configurations – a novelty erection technology based on expandable mechanisms. Finally, the paper presents some new advances in form-finding of tensegrity structures and shape control of tensegrity structures.

Abstract:This paper presents some works on the configuration in spatial structures. Abstract:This paper provides a state-of-the-art review on practical application and research advances of space structures in China.The main contents of the paper include: the optimization,improvement and innovation on the form of space structures;the collapse mechanism,elastic-plastic analysis and ultimate bearing capacity of nodal joints in space structures;super long span structures;development from heavy roofs to light roofs,from rigid structural systems to flexible systems;research and development of cable domes;simulation on the whole construction process and new construction methods of large space structures;development from fixed roofs to retractable roofs;development from simple design technology to manufacture informative integration technology;advances in theoretical research on space structures and health monitoring and reinforcing technology of space structures.Further research topics for the application and development of long-span space structures in China are finally presented.

Abstract:The idea of structural art has gained an increase in interest due to the pioneering book by David Billington in 1983. With this, a paradigm shift is emerging with the belief that structural engineers can become artists in the design process by cooperatively integrating three tenets: economy, efficiency, and elegance. The objective of this up-to-date review is to present a broad perspective of structural art during the past three decades (1983-2013). Historical engineering projects and the stories of their structural engineers are discussed to identify the key conditions that have contributed to various works of structural art. Further, this review promotes the importance of the structural art concept and equips future engineers by discussing the potential resources and tools that can be utilized to learn more about structural art. Abstract:Research Objective: Discuss the reassessment of the structural conception in the process of teaching and learning two architects, with views not aprimoramento and association with a new reality in the field of construction. Theoretical Framework: Construct a brief history on the design of structures for graduate courses in architecture, using surveys pointed out in the main works published in the area, to highlight the importance of readjusting the two courses to new market demands. Methodology: The applied methodology is not present article and bibliographic research, which consists of the analysis of literature related to thematic addressed systematically on the subject of teaching-learning of structures for graduate courses, in architecture. It is important to highlight that bibliographic research, in accordance with rigorous scientific standards, becomes essential for the construction of quality scientific work, updated, consistent and theoretically founded. Foram used books, newspapers, articles and Internet sites, among other sources. Results: There are several problems not in the teaching of structures in schools of architecture and urbanism, such as purely expository classrooms and teaching programs distant from current professional practice, which leads us to conclude that the Structural Chain of Two Courses presents gaps in its composition, for not making integration between other disciplines, not being updated with new market demands or the adoption of didactic resources with qualitative knowledge on structural behavior, or which results directly in failures in the technological training of architects. Theoretical and Practical Contributions: Faced with new market demands and surveys put forward during the research, or present work possibly relevant to the topic.

Abstract:Recent events, in particular the COVID-19 pandemic, have demonstrated the need for digital tools allowing people to meet, interact, and collaborate. Software-enabled systems must facilitate not only collaborative work, but also humanitarian needs like healthcare, online learning from kindergarten to postgraduate levels, and social networking. Such systems must be developed considering personal needs, the diversity of the population, their privacy needs, and physical safety. Moreover, this new generation of software-enabled systems must provide us a more sustainable world, from smart homes to industries and cities. All these challenges highlight critical considerations on what software-enabled systems to develop in the coming years, and especially on how to design these systems to offer a more Sustainable Digital Society. The software engineering community is facing these challenges when developing solutions, in contemporary areas such as Cyber Physical Systems, Internet of Things, and Cloud/Edge-computing. Evidence shows that one of the most critical success factors for the design and development of these systems has been raising the level of abstraction by focusing on their software architecture. The architecture of a software system describes its static and dynamic structures in terms of its software components, their inter-connection and properties as well as the rationale explaining its design and evolution. A prescriptive architecture can be an artifact devised by an architect to make a decision about what design to choose among alternatives, as well as an artifact dynamically composed by a running system that uses it to make decisions about selecting alternative configurations to deal with runtime change. This special issue aims at establishing a step forward to architecting the software systems demanded by a Sustainable Digital Society. Among others, this special issue aims at contributing with theories, methods, techniques, and tools that software architects and engineers need in order to ensure that the architectures of these software-enabled systems demanded by our digital society will be understandable, verifiable, adaptable, and evolvable to meet their even changing functional and quality requirements. Contributions present evidence highlighting how they pursue and contribute to a Sustainable Digital Society. Moreover, case studies compiling both success and failure experiences contribute to this Special Issue for exploitation in future research.

Abstract:There are great differences between architectural design and structural design in the aspects of thinking mode and design objective. The design of practical projects always develops along with compromise between the two professions. This working pattern is not considered as an effective way for structures in taking its good effects in architectural design, and may probably lead to waste. Penetration of contemporary digital technologies in architectural industry makes it possible for the architectural and structural design to be integrated on the digital platform. In the 2014 Tsinghua parametric design workshop, forms of folding plate structure are explored along with the teaching process of Grasshopper. Form generation and structural simulation are carried out on the Grasshopper platform. Laser cutting and 3D printing technologies are also employed in elements fabrication. This article introduces the technical issues and thinking related to this experimental project.

Abstract:Contemporary architectural design is flourishing in China,and new structural design concepts and techniques for the construction brings a lot of inspirations and creative thinking into architectural design.However,there are also architectural works with unreasonable yet costly structure system,which considers no historical context and makes negative impact on the creativity of today's architectural design.On the other hand,following foreign architectural masterpieces blindly exerts a strong influence on Chinese market and this phenomenon raises academic concern.Therefore,it is necessary to recognize the inherent nature of how the internal structural elements of a building deliver the living expression of the external artistic representaiton.This study attempts to remind domestic architects to adhere to the sound structural principles in the creative design process to achieve artistic impact with value,quality and performance.Through the study of artistic architectural design of historical meaning and its contribution to the progress of civilization,the modern masterpieces which have achieved the balance of technical and artistic expression,can be further investigated and analyzed.The authors call for an objective evaluation framework be developed to illustrate the interaction of such "technical" and "artistic" expressions,which architects may apply in their creative design process to contribute a higher level of harmony to our living environment.

Abstract:In this work, the progress of structural materials is reviewed, the strengthening mechanisms of different types of structures are highlighted, and the impact of architecture design on the performance of advanced materials is discussed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of structural innovation of advanced materials in improving material properties are discussed. The natural design and coupling of biological structures are the root of realizing the high strength, toughness, and unique functional properties of biomaterials. Advanced architecture design is applied to many materials, including metal materials, inorganic nonmetallic materials, polymer materials, and so on. To improve the performance of advanced materials, the designed architecture can be enhanced by bionics of biological structure, optimization of structural parameters, and coupling of multiple types of structures. Herein, the progress of structural materials is reviewed, the strengthening mechanisms of different types of structures are highlighted, and the impact of architecture design on the performance of advanced materials is discussed. Architecture design can improve the properties of materials at the micro level, such as mechanical, electrical, and thermal conductivity. The synergistic effect of structure makes traditional materials move toward advanced functional materials, thus enriching the macroproperties of materials. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of structural innovation of advanced materials in improving material properties are discussed.

Abstract:This is a book that shows how to “see” structures as being integral to architecture. It engages a subject that is both about understanding the mechanical aspects of structure as well as being able to relate this to the space, form, and conceptual design ideas that are inherent to the art of building. Analyzing the structural principles behind many of the best-known works of architecture from past and present alike, this book places the subject within a contemporary context. The subject matter is approached in a qualitative and discursive manner, illustrated by many photographs and structural behavior diagrams. Accessible mathematical equations and worked-out examples are also included so as to deepen a fundamental understanding of the topic. This new, color edition’s format has been thoroughly revised and its content updated and expanded throughout. It is perfect as either an introductory structures course text or as a designer’s sourcebook for inspiration, for here two essential questions are addressed in parallel fashion: “How do structures work?” and “What form do structures take in the context of architecture – and why so?” A rich, varied and engaging rationale for structural form in architecture thus emerges.
