Abstract:This paper provides a state-of-the-art review on practical application and research advances of space structures in China.The main contents of the paper include: the optimization,improvement and innovation on the form of space structures;the collapse mechanism,elastic-plastic analysis and ultimate bearing capacity of nodal joints in space structures;super long span structures;development from heavy roofs to light roofs,from rigid structural systems to flexible systems;research and development of cable domes;simulation on the whole construction process and new construction methods of large space structures;development from fixed roofs to retractable roofs;development from simple design technology to manufacture informative integration technology;advances in theoretical research on space structures and health monitoring and reinforcing technology of space structures.Further research topics for the application and development of long-span space structures in China are finally presented.

Abstract:This paper presents a summary of the author's recent work on the configuration of spatial structures. To better satisfy architecture and engineering requirements, the paper introduces a technique of reconstructing freestyle 3D objects with grid space structures. With this technique, irregular and complex configurations can be easily modelled, which has a great potential in modelling of sculptures and bionic structures. Then several new types of deployable structures, which are based on linkage mechanisms including Bricard linkages and double chain linkages, are proposed. The kinetic behaviour of these deployable structures is investigated by geometrical analysis. And their possible applications in retractable roofs are also explored. Meanwhile, the paper proposes a practical application of structures with changeable configurations – a novelty erection technology based on expandable mechanisms. Finally, the paper presents some new advances in form-finding of tensegrity structures and shape control of tensegrity structures.

Abstract:The last decades have seen major advances in the research, design and construction of steel space structures (space grid structures) in China. This paper provides a review of these developments, with particular attention to the new technologies and new structural forms employed in China. The following topics on new technologies and new structures are given emphasis: long-span and large-area grid structures; composite space trusses; composite reticulated shells; triple-layer space trusses; partial double-layer (single-layer) lattice shells; prestressed grid structures; cable-stayed grid structures; special grid structures; new types of joints; theoretical work and application research. Prospects for steel space structures in the 21st century are presented at the end of this paper.

Abstract:The need to design structures for ever harsher environments, to greater heights and spans, with greater controllability and durability, and of greater economy and safety, calls for creative solutions by today's structural engineers. This paper examines the issue of fostering structural engineering creativity in students, which does not appear to have been discussed in the open literature. The paper begins with a brief discussion of creativity followed by an analysis of the design process as a creative process. This analysis identifies the deficiencies in the current approach of teaching structural analysis which emphasises the mastery of skills for quantitative analysis hut neglects the development of structural insight and an ability for divergent thinking. A number of measures which may be able to rectify these deficiencies are then discussed These include the imparting of qualitative-analysis skills in students, the use of structural paradoxes to develop problem-solving skills, and a stronger emphasis in teaching on links between structural forms and functional attributes and between different structural forms.

Abstract:Space grid structures are widely used in the field of structural engineering due to their good mechanical properties and simple construction procedures. This paper reviews the development of space grid structures and mainly introduces the development of space grid structures in China in recent years. Some typical applications of space grid structures are introduced and the technical developments are summarized. It shows that China not only has a large number of engineering applications of space grid structures, but also a rapid development of related technologies. Finally, some prospects for space grid structures are discussed.

Abstract:High strength steel structures have many advantages and have been applied in many buildings and bridges in the world.To comprehend the mechanical performance and research progress of this new green structures and provide the guidance for further related studies,the engineering applications were introduced briefly,and the recent researches were reviewed,including the high strength steel static material performance and that under cyclic loadings,toughness,sectional residual stress,buckling and hysteretic behavior of high strength steel columns,the ductility and resistance of bolted connections with high strength steel slices,the seismic performance of high strength steel frames,and the finite element analysis(FEA),especially with recent experimental studies conducted in Tsinghua University.All the results showed that high strength steel materials,members and structural systems had obvious superiority,but there were few reasonable design methods in current design specifications in the world.In order to make the application of high strength steel structures safe and more reasonable,new design theory and calculation formulae would be urgently needed.

Abstract:Purpose Structural engineering as a part of civil engineering has over 5,000 years of distinguished history, as documented in this paper. An attempt is made in this paper to define structural engineering as it exists at present, then some historical structures are identified. Design/methodology/approach The advances of structural engineering are discussed in chronological order, encompassing the development of the concept, analysis, the use of innovative construction materials, and construction. The developments which necessitated the change of design philosophies are presented, and the current status of structural engineering is discussed in terms of several specific topics. Opportunities and challenges in the new millennium in structural engineering are then presented in terms of education, service to society, and research. Findings In the past, structural engineering always met the challenges it faced. It helped to improve our quality of life, and its role in society is not expected to change in the near future. Originality/value The paper has provided an over‐view of this important profession – from ancient history to the present day. Based on research over several decades it offers a prediction of the direction in which this profession and the academic research that underpins it is likely to take in the future.

Abstract:The idea of structural art has gained an increase in interest due to the pioneering book by David Billington in 1983. With this, a paradigm shift is emerging with the belief that structural engineers can become artists in the design process by cooperatively integrating three tenets: economy, efficiency, and elegance. The objective of this up-to-date review is to present a broad perspective of structural art during the past three decades (1983-2013). Historical engineering projects and the stories of their structural engineers are discussed to identify the key conditions that have contributed to various works of structural art. Further, this review promotes the importance of the structural art concept and equips future engineers by discussing the potential resources and tools that can be utilized to learn more about structural art. Abstract:This paper firstly presents the latest development of high strength/performance structural materials in recent years. The rational applications and examples of high strength/performance structural materials in the structural systems to obtain high performance are discussed and presented. The positive functions of high strength reinforcement used in reinforced concrete frame structures, that can enhance the structural performance against earthquake and reduce the structural seismic damage, are investigated in detail with nonlinear pushover analysis and dynamic analysis. The results show that the high seismic performance of the reinforced concrete frames, including a delayed appearance of plastic hinges at the bottom story columns feet, to form a rational failure mechanism under strong earthquake, and a small. residual. displacement after earthquake that cause an easy retrofitting after earthquake, can be obtained by replacing normal strength reinforcement with high strength reinforcement in the columns. Finally, the development of the safety and design theory for the structures using high strength/performance materials are discussed.

Abstract:This paper reviews some topics related to the advances and applications of structural impact dynamics in recent years. Dynamic behavior of structural members including tubes, beams and plates under axial or transverse loading, and cellular materials and sandwich structures under impact or blast loading are summarized here. The research methodology involves experimental studies, theoretical modeling, as well as numerical simulations. However, as we mainly focus on the longer time dynamic responses of structures and cellular materials, studies of stress wave propagation and the material's strain-rate sensitivity are not included.

Abstract:Based on analyses of the share of documents of structural geology and tectonics in the GeoRef system over 100 years in the last century, and the historical change of international (31 years) and domestic (16 years) document counts of various topics in structural geology and tectonics, the position of structural geology and tectonics in the geosciences is evaluated and the major advaces in fields of plate tectonics, continental dynamics and global dynamics are reviewed. Our attention mainly focuses on the advances in studies of structural analysis, deformation mechanisms and rheology of rocks, contractional tectonics and late- and post-orogenic extensional collapse in orogens, large-scale strike-slip faults and indentation-extrusion tectonics, active tectonics and natural hazards. The relationships of structural geology and tectonics with petrology and geochronology are also discussed in terms of intersection of scientific disciplines. Finally, some suggestions are proposed for the further development of structural geology and tectonics in China.
Recent Research Advances On The Buckling Behavior Of High Strength And Ultra-High Strength Steel Structures

Abstract:High strength (nominal yield strength f(r) >= 420MPa) and ultra-high strength (nominal yield strength f(r) >= 460MPa) steel structures, which have many advantages such as small member sizes, light structure weight, high safety, low engineering cost and environmental protection, have begun to be applied in building, bridge and tower structures. The research on the buckling behavior of such kind steel structures is still at the initial stage, and a few welded section column compression tests were conducted in foreign countries. In this paper, recent research advances on the buckling behavior of high strength and ultra-high strength steel columns, which were conducted by Tsinghua University and Delft University of Technology, are introduced, including the review and experimental study on high strength steel engineering applications, material properties, the residual stress and the buckling behavior of columns, as well as numerical study on the buckling. Based on the research works it is indicated that modem high strength fine grain structural steels have excellent material properties, and the buckling behavior of high strength columns improved a lot in general because of the effects of imperfections such as nonstraightness and residual stresses less severe for high strength steel members, and it has been proven that the residual stress to steel yield strength ratio decreases based on the experimental study. Generally, the research works on buckling behavior of high strength and ultra-high strength steel columns introduced in this paper provide significant basis and research findings for the future study, including the researches on the mechanical behavior and design method of high strength and ultra-high strength steel structures. Besides, it can also be helpful for the application of high strength and ultra-high strength steels to be applied widely in engineering in China.
