Abstract:Abstract Humanity continues to suffer from deadly diseases. Successes of science are great, but diseases that cannot be treated still exist. The only solution is to continue research in the search for drugs, as well as in methods of treating and preventing the onset of these diseases. This article is an overview of the development of AI on the issue of diabetes in a larger population of the planet over the past couple of years. The article contains information about the latest existing innovations of medical AI that helps in the fight against type 1 and type 2 of diabetes in 2019. A general assessment of existing AI systems and research has been conducted, as well as statistics on the distribution and usage of these technologies in the world today. The main problems that have not yet found a solution in the field of diagnosing and treating diabetes of both types are presented in conclusion.
Transforming Diabetes Care Through Artificial Intelligence: The Future Is Here

Abstract:An estimated 425 million people globally have diabetes, accounting for 12% of the world's health expenditures, and yet 1 in 2 persons remain undiagnosed and untreated. Applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive computing offer promise in diabetes care. The purpose of this article is to better understand what AI advances may be relevant today to persons with diabetes (PWDs), their clinicians, family, and caregivers. The authors conducted a predefined, online PubMed search of publicly available sources of information from 2009 onward using the search terms "diabetes" and "artificial intelligence." The study included clinically-relevant, high-impact articles, and excluded articles whose purpose was technical in nature. A total of 450 published diabetes and AI articles met the inclusion criteria. The studies represent a diverse and complex set of innovative approaches that aim to transform diabetes care in 4 main areas: automated retinal screening, clinical decision support, predictive population risk stratification, and patient self-management tools. Many of these new AI-powered retinal imaging systems, predictive modeling programs, glucose sensors, insulin pumps, smartphone applications, and other decision-support aids are on the market today with more on the way. AI applications have the potential to transform diabetes care and help millions of PWDs to achieve better blood glucose control, reduce hypoglycemic episodes, and reduce diabetes comorbidities and complications. AI applications offer greater accuracy, efficiency, ease of use, and satisfaction for PWDs, their clinicians, family, and caregivers.
Latest advancements in the development of new therapies for type 1 diabetes

Abstract:This study aims to explore new treatments for type 1 diabetes that could serve as an alternative or adjunct to insulin therapy. This is a literature review based on a search of relevant scientific articles in PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases. The scrutiny of publications revealed that the introduction of glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists into insulin therapy can improve disease control and reduce the frequency of hypoglycaemic episodes. While immune therapy is pathogenetically justified, its utility is limited in patients with recent onset of type 1 diabetes. It may, however, find application in prophylaxis in individuals at increased risk of developing this type of diabetes. Concurrently, stem cell therapy is under active investigation in clinical trials and has shown promise in reducing insulin dependence, improving β-cell function and controlling glucose levels. In addition, stem cells have demonstrated efficacy in treating complications of diabetes such as diabetic nephropathy, peripheral neuropathy and diabetic angiopathy. There is compelling evidence supporting the significant potential of gene-editing technology. Intravenous administration of T-regulatory cells, as one method of cell therapy, shows potential in stabilising the course of diabetes and slowing its progression. However, further research is warranted to confirm efficacy. While gene therapy holds promise, much of its research is currently in the preclinical stage. Further development of innovative therapies for type 1 diabetes has the potential to enhance the quality of life of patients, improve disease control and prevent the development of complications (Fig. 1, Ref. 54). Abstract:Diabetes mellitus, stemming from either insulin resistance or inadequate insulin secretion, represents a complex ailment that results in prolonged hyperglycemia and severe complications. Patients endure severe ramifications such as kidney disease, vision impairment, cardiovascular disorders, and susceptibility to infections, leading to significant physical suffering and imposing substantial socio-economic burdens. This condition has evolved into an increasingly severe health crisis. There is an urgent need to develop new treatments with improved efficacy and fewer adverse effects to meet clinical demands. However, novel drug development is costly, time-consuming, and often associated with side effects and suboptimal efficacy, making it a major challenge. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have revolutionized drug development across its comprehensive lifecycle, spanning drug discovery, preclinical studies, clinical trials, and post-market surveillance. These technologies have significantly accelerated the identification of promising therapeutic candidates, optimized trial designs, and enhanced post-approval safety monitoring. Recent advances in AI, including data augmentation, interpretable AI, and integration of AI with traditional experimental methods, offer promising strategies for overcoming the challenges inherent in AI-based drug discovery. Despite these advancements, there exists a notable gap in comprehensive reviews detailing AI and ML applications throughout the entirety of developing medications for diabetes mellitus. This review aims to fill this gap by evaluating the impact and potential of AI and ML technologies at various stages of diabetes mellitus drug development. It does that by synthesizing current research findings and technological advances so as to effectively control diabetes mellitus and mitigate its far-reaching social and economic impacts. The integration of AI and ML promises to revolutionize diabetes mellitus treatment strategies, offering hope for improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare burdens worldwide.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition resulting in insulin deficiency and eventual loss of pancreatic β cell function requiring lifelong insulin therapy. Since the discovery of insulin more than 100 years ago, vast advances in treatments have improved care for many people with type 1 diabetes. Ongoing research on the genetics and immunology of type 1 diabetes and on interventions to modify disease course and preserve β cell function have expanded our broad understanding of this condition. Biomarkers of type 1 diabetes are detectable months to years before development of overt disease, and three stages of diabetes are now recognized. The advent of continuous glucose monitoring and the newer automated insulin delivery systems have changed the landscape of type 1 diabetes management and are associated with improved glycated hemoglobin and decreased hypoglycemia. Adjunctive therapies such as sodium glucose cotransporter-1 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists may find use in management in the future. Despite these rapid advances in the field, people living in under-resourced parts of the world struggle to obtain necessities such as insulin, syringes, and blood glucose monitoring essential for managing this condition. This review covers recent developments in diagnosis and treatment and future directions in the broad field of type 1 diabetes.

Abstract:The increasing prevalence of diabetes, high avoidable morbidity and mortality due to diabetes and diabetic complications, and related substantial economic burden make diabetes a significant health challenge worldwide. A shortage of diabetes specialists, uneven distribution of medical resources, low adherence to medications, and improper self-management contribute to poor glycemic control in patients with diabetes. Recent advancements in digital health technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI), provide a significant opportunity to achieve better efficiency in diabetes care, which may diminish the increase in diabetes-related health-care expenditures. Here, we review the recent progress in the application of AI in the management of diabetes and then discuss the opportunities and challenges of AI application in clinical practice. Furthermore, we explore the possibility of combining and expanding upon existing digital health technologies to develop an AI-assisted digital health-care ecosystem that includes the prevention and management of diabetes.

We are no longer confined to descriptive data analysis because we may acquire a larger by recognizing and anticipating patterns coming from inductive reasoning, owing to medical learning. Abstract:Diabetes is a chronic condition which affects the glucose metabolism in the body. In lieu of any clinical “cure,” the condition is managed through the administration of pharmacological aids, insulin supplements, diet restrictions, exercise, and the like. The conventional clinical prescriptions are limited by their life-long dependency and diminished potency, which in turn hinder the patient’s recovery. This necessitated an alteration in approach and has instigated several investigations into other strategies. As Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is known to be an autoimmune disorder, targeting the immune system in activation and/or suppression has shown promise in reducing beta cell loss and improving insulin levels in response to hyperglycemia. Another strategy currently being explored is the use of nanoparticles in the delivery of immunomodulators, insulin, or engineered vaccines to endogenous immune cells. Nanoparticle-assisted targeting of immune cells holds substantial potential for enhanced patient care within T1D clinical settings. Herein, we summarize the knowledge of etiology, clinical scenarios, and the current state of nanoparticle-based immunotherapeutic approaches for Type 1 diabetes. We also discuss the feasibility of translating this approach to clinical practice.

Abstract:The discourse amongst diabetes specialists and academics regarding technology and artificial intelligence (AI) typically centres around the 10% of people with diabetes who have type 1 diabetes, focusing on glucose sensors, insulin pumps and, increasingly, closed-loop systems. This focus is reflected in conference topics, strategy documents, technology appraisals and funding streams. What is often overlooked is the wider application of data and AI, as demonstrated through published literature and emerging marketplace products, that offers promising avenues for enhanced clinical care, health-service efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This review provides an overview of AI techniques and explores the use and potential of AI and data-driven systems in a broad context, covering all diabetes types, encompassing: (1) patient education and self-management; (2) clinical decision support systems and predictive analytics, including diagnostic support, treatment and screening advice, complications prediction; and (3) the use of multimodal data, such as imaging or genetic data. The review provides a perspective on how data- and AI-driven systems could transform diabetes care in the coming years and how they could be integrated into daily clinical practice. We discuss evidence for benefits and potential harms, and consider existing barriers to scalable adoption, including challenges related to data availability and exchange, health inequality, clinician hesitancy and regulation. Stakeholders, including clinicians, academics, commissioners, policymakers and those with lived experience, must proactively collaborate to realise the potential benefits that AI-supported diabetes care could bring, whilst mitigating risk and navigating the challenges along the way.

Abstract:Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic health condition resulting from pancreatic beta cell dysfunction and insulin depletion. While automated insulin delivery systems are now available, many people choose to manage insulin delivery manually through insulin pumps or through multiple daily injections. Frequent insulin titrations are needed to adequately manage glucose, however, provider adjustments are typically made every several months. Recent automated decision support systems incorporate artificial intelligence algorithms to deliver personalized recommendations regarding insulin doses and daily behaviors. This paper presents a comprehensive review of computational and artificial intelligence-based decision support systems to manage T1D. Articles were obtained from PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and ScienceDirect databases. No time period restrictions were imposed on the search. After removing off-topic articles and duplicates, 562 articles were left to review. Of those articles, we identified 61 articles for comprehensive review based on algorithm evaluation using real-world human data, in silico trials, or clinical studies. We grouped decision support systems into general categories of (1) those which recommend adjustments to insulin and (2) those which predict and help avoid hypoglycemia. We review the artificial intelligence methods used for each type of decision support system, and discuss the performance and potential applications of these systems.

Abstract:The scientific diagnosis and treatment of patients with diabetes require frequent blood glucose testing and insulin delivery to normoglycemia. Therefore, an artificial pancreas with a continuous blood glucose (BG) monitoring function is an urgent research target in the medical industry. The problem of closed-loop algorithmic control of the BG with a time delay is a key and difficult issue that needs to be overcome in the development of an artificial pancreas. Firstly, the composition, structure, and control characteristics of the artificial pancreas are introduced. Subsequently, the research progress of artificial pancreas control algorithms is reviewed, and the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of proportional-integral-differential control, model predictive control, and artificial intelligence control are compared and analyzed to determine whether they are suitable for the practical application of the artificial pancreas. Additionally, key advancements in areas such as blood glucose data monitoring, adaptive models, wearable devices, and fully automated artificial pancreas systems are also reviewed. Abstract:Insulin pumps and other smart devices have recently made significant advancements in the treatment of diabetes, a disorder that affects people all over the world. The development of medical AI has been influenced by AI methods designed to help physicians make diagnoses, choose a course of therapy, and predict outcomes. In this article, we thoroughly analyse how AI is being used to enhance and personalize diabetes treatment. The search turned up 77 original research papers, from which we've selected the most crucial information regarding the learning models employed, the data typology, the deployment stage, and the application domains. We identified two key trends, enabled mostly by AI: patient-based therapy personalization and therapeutic algorithm optimization. In the meanwhile, we point out various shortcomings in the existing literature, like a lack of multimodal database analysis or a lack of interpretability. The rapid improvements in AI and the expansion of the amount of data already available offer the possibility to overcome these difficulties shortly and enable a wider deployment of this technology in clinical settings.

Abstract:Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a complex metabolic disorder that burdens the healthcare system, requires early detection and treatment. Recent strides in digital health technologies coupled with artificial intelligence (AI) may have the potential to revolutionize T2DM screening, diagnosis of complications, and management through the development of digital biomarkers. This review provides an overview of the potential applications of AI-driven biomarkers in the context of screening, diagnosing complications, and managing patients with T2DM. The benefits of using multi-sensor devices to develop digital biomarkers are discussed. The summary of these findings and patterns between model architecture and sensor type are presented. Additionally, we highlight the pivotal role of AI techniques in clinical intervention and implementation, encompassing clinical decision support systems, telemedicine interventions, and population health initiatives. Challenges such as data privacy, algorithm interpretability, and regulatory considerations are also highlighted, alongside future research directions to explore the use of AI-driven digital biomarkers in T2DM screening and management.

Abstract:Background: Artificial intelligence methods in combination with the latest technologies, including medical devices, mobile computing, and sensor technologies, have the potential to enable the creation and delivery of better management services to deal with chronic diseases. One of the most lethal and prevalent chronic diseases is diabetes mellitus, which is characterized by dysfunction of glucose homeostasis. Objective: The objective of this paper is to review recent efforts to use artificial intelligence techniques to assist in the management of diabetes, along with the associated challenges. Methods: A review of the literature was conducted using PubMed and related bibliographic resources. Analyses of the literature from 2010 to 2018 yielded 1849 pertinent articles, of which we selected 141 for detailed review. Results: We propose a functional taxonomy for diabetes management and artificial intelligence. Additionally, a detailed analysis of each subject category was performed using related key outcomes. This approach revealed that the experiments and studies reviewed yielded encouraging results. Conclusions: We obtained evidence of an acceleration of research activity aimed at developing artificial intelligence-powered tools for prediction and prevention of complications associated with diabetes. Our results indicate that artificial intelligence methods are being progressively established as suitable for use in clinical daily practice, as well as for the self-management of diabetes. Consequently, these methods provide powerful tools for improving patients' quality of life.
