Abstract:The coupling of piezoelectric and semiconducting properties gives rise to the effect of piezotronics, which regulates charge carrier transport through the modulation of energy barriers at contact interfaces. With piezoelectric semiconductors as the building blocks, extensive progress has been made, covering the fundamental physics level, the individual device level as well as the integrated system level, effectively establishing a new field of study. By manipulating interfacial processes incorporating ionic charges, free electrons/holes, photons and chemicals, novel interdisciplinary effects have been studied and reported. This article aims at reviewing the milestone progress and offering perspectives of this new field of study in applications for multi-functional sensing systems, human-electronics interfacing, MEMS, energy harvesting and so on.

Abstract:Ferroelectricity has made a huge impact on science and technology since Joseph Valasek (then a Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota) discovered it in 1920, a little longer than 100 years ago. Whereas Dr. Valasek's original research was motivated by the need to develop seismic sensors, at present ferroelectric materials have been extensively studied for applications in high-energy capacitors, energy harvesting systems, night vision sensors, and electrocaloric solid cooling, and, of particular significance, the ferroelectrics are the material-of-choice for numerous electromechanical devices, including underwater acoustic transducers, medical diagnostic and therapeutic transducers, piezoelectric actuators, and ultrasonic motors, to name a few. The progress over the past 100 years has been enormous and it is ongoing: for example, the piezoelectric coefficient d of ferroelectrics has increased from a few pico-Coulomb per Newton to several thousand pico-Coulomb per Newton, which benefits all piezoelectric sensing and actuation devices.

Abstract:Ferroelectrets (also called piezoelectrets) are relatively young members in the family of piezo-, pyro- and ferroelectric materials. They exhibit ferroic behaviour phenomenologically undistinguishable from that of traditional ferroelectrics, although the materials per se are essentially non-polar space-charge electrets with artificial macroscopic dipoles (i.e. internally charged cavities). Since ferroelectrets not only represent a scientific curiosity but also have great application potential, they have attracted tremendous attention from science and industry. The research and development of ferroelectrets has witnessed significant progress in the past few years. New ferroelectrets with large transverse piezoelectric activity, biodegradable ferroelectrets as well as 3-D printed ferroelectrets are reported. Charging methods of high efficiency are proposed based on better understanding of the physico-chemical processes during charging. New insights into the piezoelectricity of ferroelectrets are provided. The development of ferroelectret-based piezoelectric-magnetic multimodal transducer films opens up new avenues for the research of ferroelectrets. Particularly, more and more novel applications of ferroelectrets in flexible pressure sensors, health monitoring, energy harvesting, air-coupled ultrasonic non-destructive testing etc. are reported. Here, these exciting recent advancements in the field of ferroelectret research are reviewed and discussed.

Abstract:Multiferroics refers to a new class of multifunctional materials in which the magnetic and electric orders coexist in a single compound and nontrival magneto-electric coupling is in presence.There will be potential applications in practical industry and information device for those multifunctional materials in which there are also very rich fundamental physics implied.In this paper, we review the past progress and current trends in the studies on multiferroic materials.After a short introduction of the history of the multiferroics,we discuss in detail the classification of various multiferroics according to the mechanism that drives the ferroelectricity,where special attention is given to review the most recent advances in the experimental and theoretical aspects of spin-driven multiferroics.Then we systematically address a new type of elementary excitation, electromagnon,emerged in the multiferroics,and provide an overview of the key experimental phenomena and current theoretical understandings.Finally,we summarize the major scientific challenges and outline the perspective views of the field in the near future.
Large Piezoelectric Effect in a Lead-Free Molecular Ferroelectric Thin Film

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials have been widely used in various applications, such as high-voltage sources, actuators, sensors, motors, frequency standard, vibration reducer, and so on. In the past decades, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) binary ferroelectric ceramics have dominated the commercial piezoelectric market due to their excellent properties near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), although they contain more than 60% toxic lead element. Here, we report a lead-free and one-composition molecular ferroelectric trimethylbromomethylammonium tribromomanganese(II) (TMBM-MnBr3) with a large piezoelectric coefficient d33 of 112 pC/N along polar axis, comparable with those of typically one-composition piezoceramics such as BaTiO3 along polar axis [001] (∼90 pC/N) and much greater than those of most known molecular ferroelectrics (almost below 40 pC/N). More significantly, the effective local piezoelectric coefficient of TMBM-MnBr3 films is comparable to that of its bulk crystals. In terms of ferroelectric performance, it is the low coercive voltages, combined with the multiaxial characteristic, that ensure the feasibility of piezo film applications. Based on these, along with the common superiorities of molecular ferroelectrics like light weight, flexibility, low acoustical impedance, easy and environmentally friendly processing, it will open a new avenue for the exploration of next-generation piezoelectric devices in industrial and medical applications.
Piezo-/ferroelectric phenomena in biomaterials: A brief review of recent progress and perspectives

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">There have been overwhelming observations of piezo-/ferroelectric phenomena in many biological tissues and macromolecules, boosting the development of bio-based smart devices and the applications using electromechanical coupling phenomena in biological systems. The electromechanical coupling is believed to be responsible for various biophysical behaviors and remarkable biomaterial properties. Despite the abundant phenomenal observations, the fundamental understanding of the piezo-/ferroelectric effect in biomaterials/systems and the rational design of biobased macroscopic materials with desired piezoelectric responses are still scarce. In this review, we firstly present remarkable historical events on the development of piezo-/ferroelectricity in biomaterials, followed by a brief overview of the fundamental physics of piezo-/ferroelectricity. The developments of biopiezo-/bioferroelectricity in protein-based biomaterials and their implications are highlighted subsequently. In experimental studies, to identify the intrinsic piezo-/ferroelectric properties from other effects or artifacts is usually elusive. This issue is also addressed and discussed in detail, especially using piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) and spectroscopy techniques to investigate the local piezo-/ferroelectric phenomena in nanostructured materials are highlighted emphatically.</p>

Abstract:As an important member of the dielectric family, ferroelectric materials are known for their various physical properties and have been attracted considerable attention from both scientific respect and technology respect. Piezoelectricity is one of the most important properties of ferroelectrics, which has been widely used in many devices for the conversion between electric energy and mechanical energy. For example, the main piezoelectric elements of underwater acoustic transducers, medical imaging systems, piezoelectric actuators, etc., are all ferroelectrics. In this paper, the history of the piezoelectric effect in lead-based perovskite ferroelectrics is introduced, and the relationship among the microstructure, the state of polarization and the piezoelectricity is discussed. In addition, we introduce some important factors for optimizing the piezoelectricity of ferroelectrics, such as morphotropic phase boundary, soft doping, polarization rotation, local structural heterogeneity, etc. It is expected that this paper could shed light on the future design of ferroelectric materials with various functionalities.
Strain‐Induced Tunable Enhancement of Piezoelectricity in a Novel Molecular Multiferroic Material

Abstract:This is the first strain engineering in molecular ionic multiferroics. Under a strain of 2.0%, a tenfold increase in piezoelectric performance and a significant reduction of 50% in the ferroelectric coercive field are observed, which unveils a novel strategy to augment the performance of molecular multiferroics. Multiferroics are appealing because of application potentials in data storage devices, sensors, transducers, and energy harvesters. Molecular multiferroics emerge as a promising alternative to inorganic multiferroics due to flexibility, light weight, low toxicity, solution processing, structural diversity, and chemical tunability. While researches have predominantly focused on perovskite structures, studies on molecular ionic multiferroics remain relatively limited. It is urgent to creatively build a novel platform for studying and developing the coupling and interaction between the stress, electricity, and magnetism. Knowing this, the work focuses on a novel organic–inorganic hybrid multiferroic N‐ethyl‐N‐(fluoromethyl)‐N‐methylethylammonium tetrabromoferrate (III) showing coexisting magnetic and electric orderings. It undergoes antiferromagnetic, ferroelectric, and ferroelastic transitions. Notably, under a strain of 2.0%, the piezoelectric response increases tenfold, and the coercive field of ferroelectric polarization is reduced by half. The strain‐induced enhancement of piezoelectricity is rarely reported in molecular multiferroics. Density functional theory is employed to predict that the mechanism of the large piezoelectric response under strain engineering is related to the cation rotation and phase switching between the stable phase and an energetically competitive metastable phase. This study creates a new paradigm to develop molecular multiferroics and future microelectronic devices for energy conversion.

Abstract:Ferroelectricity, which has diverse important applications such as memory elements, capacitors, and sensors, was first discovered in a molecular compound, Rochelle salt, in 1920 by Valasek. Owing to their superiorities of lightweight, biocompatibility, structural tunability, mechanical flexibility, etc. , the past decade has witnessed the renaissance of molecular ferroelectrics as promising complementary materials to commercial inorganic ferroelectrics. Thus, on the 100th anniversary of ferroelectricity, it is an opportune time to look into the future, specifically into how to push the boundaries of material design in molecular ferroelectric systems and finally overcome the hurdles to their commercialization. Herein, we present a comprehensive and accessible review of the appealing development of molecular ferroelectrics over the past 10 years, with an emphasis on their structural diversity, chemical design, exceptional properties, and potential applications. We believe that it will inspire intense, combined research efforts to enrich the family of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics and attract widespread interest from physicists and chemists to better understand the structure–function relationships governing improved applied functional device engineering.

Abstract:Here, the basic principles and measurement methods for piezoelectric coefficients of ferroelectric polymers are introduced. Approaches to improve piezoelectric property are discussed from the structure manipulation of the amorphous phase, the crystalline phase, and the crystalline–amorphous interface. Especially, the crucial role of the oriented amorphous fraction in enhancing piezoelectricity of poly(vinylidene fluoride)‐based polymers is discussed. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)‐based polymers demonstrate great potential for applications in flexible and wearable electronics but show low piezoelectric coefficients (e.g., −d33 < 30 pC N−1). The effective improvement for the piezoelectricity of PVDF is achieved by manipulating its semicrystalline structures. However, there is still a debate about which component is the primary contributor to piezoelectricity. Therefore, current methods to improve the piezoelectricity of PVDF can be classified into modulations of the amorphous phase, the crystalline region, and the crystalline–amorphous interface. Here, the basic principles and measurements of piezoelectric coefficients for soft polymers are first discussed. Then, three different categories of structural modulations are reviewed. In each category, the physical understanding and strategies to improve the piezoelectric performance of PVDF are discussed. In particular, the crucial role of the oriented amorphous fraction at the crystalline–amorphous interface in determining the piezoelectricity of PVDF is emphasized. At last, the future development of high performance piezoelectric polymers is outlooked.

Abstract:The growing demand for wearable devices has sparked a significant interest in ferroelectret films. They possess flexibility and exceptional piezoelectric properties due to strong macroscopic dipoles formed by charges trapped at the interface of their internal cavities. This review of ferroelectrets focuses on the latest progress in fabrication techniques for high temperature resistant ferroelectrets with regular and engineered cavities, strategies for optimizing their piezoelectric performance, and novel applications. The charging mechanisms of bipolar and unipolar ferroelectrets with closed and open-cavity structures are explained first. Next, the preparation and piezoelectric behavior of ferroelectret films with closed, open, and regular cavity structures using various materials are discussed. Three widely used models for predicting the piezoelectric coefficients (d33) are outlined. Methods for enhancing the piezoelectric performance such as optimized cavity design, utilization of fabric electrodes, injection of additional ions, application of DC bias voltage, and synergy of foam structure and ferroelectric effect are illustrated. A variety of applications of ferroelectret films in acoustic devices, wearable monitors, pressure sensors, and energy harvesters are presented. Finally, the future development trends of ferroelectrets toward fabrication and performance optimization are summarized along with its potential for integration with intelligent systems and large-scale preparation.

Abstract:Compared to the bulk piezoelectric materials counterpart, piezoelectric thin films (PTFs) possess advantages of smaller size, lower power consumption, better sensitivity, and have broad application in advanced micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) devices. However, the performance of MEMS transducers and actuators are largely limited by PTFs piezoelectric properties. In this review, we focus on understanding structure-property relationship of vapor deposited PTFs, with emphasis on the effect of strain energy and electrostatic energy in thin films, especially, energy relaxation induced misfit dislocation and ferroelectric (FS) and ferroelastic (FC) domain formation mechanisms. We then discuss the microstructure of these domains and their influential mechanisms on piezoelectric properties, as well as the domain engineering strategies (i.e., internal and external stimuli). This review will motivate further experimental, theoretical, and simulation studies on FS and FC domain engineering in PTFs.

Abstract:In this paper we overview our recent work on ferroelectric and magnetoelectric coupling behaviors of multiferroic doped BiFeO3 (BFO) and piezoelectric-magnetostrictive composites. Using rapid liquid sintering method we prepare single-phase BFO ceramics of excellent ferroelectric property. The BFO thin films on Pt-coated silicon wafers by pulsed laser deposition show large remnant polarization but serious ferroelectric switching fatigue. A series of piezoelectric-magnetostrictive composite structures in bulk and thin film forms are prepared and giant magnetoelectric coupling effect of them is observed. The experimentally measured results are confirmed by numerical modeling based on piezoelectric and magnetostrictive constitution equations.

Abstract:Perovskite ferroelectrics (PFs) have been the dominant piezoelectric materials for various electromechanical applications, such as ultrasonic transducers, sensors, and actuators, to name a few. In this review article, the development of PF crystals is introduced, focusing on the crystal growth and piezoelectric activity. The critical factors responsible for the high piezoelectric activity of PFs (i.e., phase transition, monoclinic phase, domain size, relaxor component, dopants, and piezoelectric anisotropy) are surveyed and discussed. A general picture of the present understanding on the high piezoelectricity of PFs is described. At the end of this review, potential approaches to further improve the piezoelectricity of PFs are proposed.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials, possessing numerous remarkable properties including high electrical conductivity, optical transparency and mechanical strength, have supplied a fertile soil for theoretical research and practical application in electronics and optoelectronics. Due to a persistent need of strain sensors, microelectromechnical system (MEMS), nanorobots and active flexible electronics, piezotronic and piezo-phototronic effect of 2D materials have been attracting growing attentions in latest years. Therefore, a comprehensive and intensive understanding of piezotronic and piezo-phototronic effect of 2D materials is required. Here we review the recent progress in theoretical analysis and experimental observation of piezotronic and piezo-phototronic effect of 2D materials enabled by non-centrosymmetric crystal structure. After introducing the fundamental physics of piezotronic and piezo-phototronic effect concisely, the origination and analysis of the piezoelectricity in 2D materials are discussed in detail. Furthermore, we focus on the application in piezotronic and piezo-phototronic effect of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) including transistor, nanogenerator, humidity sensor and photodetector. Moreover, some other 2D piezoelectric materials (PEMs) are also been summarized owing to their potential applications in piezotronics and piezo-phtotronics. Finally, some perspectives are put forward on the following opportunities and challenges for future research in this emerging field.

Abstract:Multiferroic composites possess the coupling effect among mechanical, electrical, and magnetic ordering, showing potential applications in compact, fast, and low-power magnetoelectric devices. Owing to the increasing application demand, the researches of device design, micro-/nano-fabrication, and performance test of magnetoelectric devices have made continuous progress. In this review, we briefly introduce several prototype devices based on magnetoelectric coupling, analyze the noteworthy application techniques, and summarize the working mechanisms and performances of devices including tunable inductors, RF/microwave filters, magnetoelectric memories, energy harvesters, magnetoelectric sensors, magnetoelectric antennas, etc. Besides, we discuss the issues and challenges in researches of multiferroic magnetoelectric devices, and present the perspectives for improving the device performance.

Abstract:The magnetoelectric (ME) effect, which involves the interaction of magnetic and electric fields within a material, has a significant potential for various applications. Our study addresses the limitations of conventional magnetostriction-based ME materials by demonstrating an alternative approach that achieves substantial ME effects in core-shell-type nanocomposites at room temperature. By synthesizing ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles onto piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) particles, we identified a distinct ME mechanism. In magnetorheological (MR) fluids, the magnetic-field-induced aggregation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, combined with the piezoelectricity of PVDF, leads to a pronounced ME effect, significantly enhancing the performance and stability of MR fluids. This research highlights a crucial observation of distinct ME effects, which could suggest potential pathways for advancements in practical applications including microfluidics, vibration dampers, tactile technologies, and biomedical and bioengineering fields.

Abstract:Abstract Piezoelectric materials have been analyzed for over 100 years, due to their ability to convert mechanical vibrations into electric charge or electric fields into a mechanical strain for sensor, energy harvesting, and actuator applications. A more recent development is the coupling of piezoelectricity and electro-chemistry, termed piezo-electro-chemistry, whereby the piezoelectrically induced electric charge or voltage under a mechanical stress can influence electro-chemical reactions. There is growing interest in such coupled systems, with a corresponding growth in the number of associated publications and patents. This review focuses on recent development of the piezo-electro-chemical coupling multiple systems based on various piezoelectric materials. It provides an overview of the basic characteristics of piezoelectric materials and comparison of operating conditions and their overall electro-chemical performance. The reported piezo-electro-chemical mechanisms are examined in detail. Comparisons are made between the ranges of material morphologies employed, and typical operating conditions are discussed. In addition, potential future directions and applications for the development of piezo-electro-chemical hybrid systems are described. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent studies on how piezoelectric materials and devices have been applied to control electro-chemical processes, with an aim to inspire and direct future efforts in this emerging research field.

Boosting Piezoelectric Response and Electric-Field Induced Strain in PMN-PT Relaxor Ferroelectrics

Abstract:High-performance piezoelectric materials are essential for diverse electromechanical devices, from actuators to sensors and transducers. Here, we synthesized Ce2O3-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.29PbTiO3 (xCe-PMNT29) solid solutions via conventional solid-state methods. In the x = 2.5% modified composition, we achieved a notable electrostrain-hysteresis trade-off, enhancing electrostrain (0.2%), equivalent piezoelectric coefficient d33* (1701pmV–1 at 3kVcm–1), and reducing strain hysteresis to 8.1%. Additionally, direct high-temperature piezoelectric characterizations revealed real-time variations in piezoelectric coefficient (d33) and the actual depolarization temperature, with d33 reaching 859 pC N−1 at 53 °C and planar electromechanical coupling coefficient (kp) exceeding 70% within 30−85 °C. Leveraging x-ray diffraction (XRD) and piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM), we elucidated synergistic effects between complex nanodomains and local structural heterogeneity, enhancing piezoelectric activity. This study presents a promising approach for improving electromechanical performance and electrostrain in ferroelectrics, with significant potential for practical piezoelectric applications.
