Abstract:The growing demand for wearable devices has sparked a significant interest in ferroelectret films. They possess flexibility and exceptional piezoelectric properties due to strong macroscopic dipoles formed by charges trapped at the interface of their internal cavities. This review of ferroelectrets focuses on the latest progress in fabrication techniques for high temperature resistant ferroelectrets with regular and engineered cavities, strategies for optimizing their piezoelectric performance, and novel applications. The charging mechanisms of bipolar and unipolar ferroelectrets with closed and open-cavity structures are explained first. Next, the preparation and piezoelectric behavior of ferroelectret films with closed, open, and regular cavity structures using various materials are discussed. Three widely used models for predicting the piezoelectric coefficients (d33) are outlined. Methods for enhancing the piezoelectric performance such as optimized cavity design, utilization of fabric electrodes, injection of additional ions, application of DC bias voltage, and synergy of foam structure and ferroelectric effect are illustrated. A variety of applications of ferroelectret films in acoustic devices, wearable monitors, pressure sensors, and energy harvesters are presented. Finally, the future development trends of ferroelectrets toward fabrication and performance optimization are summarized along with its potential for integration with intelligent systems and large-scale preparation.

Abstract:Ferroelectrets (also called piezoelectrets) are relatively young members in the family of piezo-, pyro- and ferroelectric materials. They exhibit ferroic behaviour phenomenologically undistinguishable from that of traditional ferroelectrics, although the materials per se are essentially non-polar space-charge electrets with artificial macroscopic dipoles (i.e. internally charged cavities). Since ferroelectrets not only represent a scientific curiosity but also have great application potential, they have attracted tremendous attention from science and industry. The research and development of ferroelectrets has witnessed significant progress in the past few years. New ferroelectrets with large transverse piezoelectric activity, biodegradable ferroelectrets as well as 3-D printed ferroelectrets are reported. Charging methods of high efficiency are proposed based on better understanding of the physico-chemical processes during charging. New insights into the piezoelectricity of ferroelectrets are provided. The development of ferroelectret-based piezoelectric-magnetic multimodal transducer films opens up new avenues for the research of ferroelectrets. Particularly, more and more novel applications of ferroelectrets in flexible pressure sensors, health monitoring, energy harvesting, air-coupled ultrasonic non-destructive testing etc. are reported. Here, these exciting recent advancements in the field of ferroelectret research are reviewed and discussed.

Abstract:Herein, the prevailing methods for preparing flexible ferroelectric films are reviewed and summarized. The research progress of flexible ferroelectric devices applied to memories, sensors, photovoltaic devices, energy harvesters, and neuromorphic computing is also be discussed in detail. Finally, the challenges and prospects of flexible ferroelectric devices in future advanced electronics are proposed. Flexible electronic devices have been extensively studied for their advantages of distinguished portability, conformal contact characteristics, and human‐friendly interfaces compared with conventional bulk Si technology. Flexible electronics can be attached to various surfaces like skin and internal organs for human–machine interaction, which has made significant advances in electronics, medicine, neuromorphic computing, etc. Owing to the innovation and maturation of the thin film preparation process, which have promoted the successful preparation of high‐quality flexible ferroelectric films. Herein, the preparation of flexible ferroelectric devices and the progress of their applications in recent years are reviewed. Prevailing methods for preparing flexible ferroelectric films including the van der Waals heteroepitaxy on flexible substrate, delamination of the ferroelectric films on rigid substrate by chemical etching techniques, and direct use of novel 2D ferroelectric materials etc. are summarized. The research progress of flexible ferroelectric devices applied to memories, sensors, photovoltaic devices, and energy harvesters are also be discussed in detail. Moreover, the potential applications of flexible ferroelectric devices in the field of neuromorphic computing are studied, a new trend which contributes to the further development of brain‐like chip systems. Finally, the challenges and prospects of flexible ferroelectric devices in the future advanced electronics are briefly proposed.

Abstract:Ferroelectric materials,one of the current research focuses with numbers of physical advantages such as high integration,low energy consumption and fast response,has broad application prospects in many aspects.Being combined with other physical technologies,the properties of ferroelectric materials can be significantly improved.The development history and prevailing research profile of ferroelectric materials were introduced at first,then the performance characteristics in detail,including five mechanisms:(1) piezoelectric and its application in micro-electromechanical systems;(2) dielectric materials used for energy storage;(3)organic ferroelectric thin films;(4) multiferroic which has two or more primary iron characteristics;(5) ferroelectric resistance switching.In addition,some unresolved technical issues of ferroelectric materials were summarized and the developing trends were prospected.

Abstract:Ferroelectric (FE) materials, including BiFeO3 , P(VDF-TrFE), and CuInP2 S6 , are a type of dielectric material with a unique, spontaneous electric polarization that can be reversed by applying an external electric field. The combination of FE and low-dimensional materials produces synergies, sparking significant research interest in solar cells, photodetectors (PDs), nonvolatile memory, and so on. The fundamental aspects of FE materials, including the origin of FE polarization, extrinsic FE materials, and FE polarization quantification are first discussed. Next, the state-of-the-art of FE-based optoelectronic devices is focused. How FE materials affect the energy band of channel materials and how device structures influence PD performance are also summarized. Finally, the future directions of this rapidly growing field are discussed.

Abstract:Flexible ferroelectric photovoltaic (FePV) films have drawn widespread attention. However, in addition to the low filling factor (FF) and large bandgap of ferroelectrics, the direct fabrication of oxide FePV film on polymer substrate is also a challenging research topic. Here, we demonstrate high-performance FePV devices can be obtained with partially crystallized Zn 0.92- x Cu x (Fe 0.04 Li 0.04 )O (ZCFLO) film directly coted on polyimide substrate utilizing a cheap and simple dip-coating method at low-temperature processing. By introducing the local ferroelectricity and the piezo-photovoltaic effect, enhanced carrier transportation is achieved in designed ferroelectric/amorphous nanostructures, and the photovoltaic performances of the ZCFLO devices are enhanced in broadened spectral range. Under the AM 1.5 G light and the tensile strain of 0.39%, the markedly improved FF (> 86%), large photoresponse (>15 mA/W), giant piezo-photovoltaic (PPV) tensor (~1.94 mA∙W -1 ∙GPa -1 ) and resulted high PCE (>2.9%) were obtained in flexible ZCFLO ( x =0.05) FePV devices. This work not only offers a cost-efficient pathway to design high-performance FePV devices but also further broadens the research scope of piezo-phototronics.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials play an increasingly important role in energy harvesters, sensors, and actuators. Flexible and thin piezoelectric films have been demonstrated to provide advanced functionalities and improved performances. However, the research on flexible inorganic piezoelectric thin films has rarely been systematically summarized. Here, we summarize the recent advances in the flexible inorganic piezoelectric thin films, focusing on their structural designs, fabrication techniques, and applications in various practical scenarios. Specifically, different fabrication techniques suitable for diverse inorganic piezoelectric nanostructures are reviewed, including sol-gel, hydrothermal, electrospinning, and other techniques, and the integration process with flexible substrates is further discussed. Biomedical and industrial applications of the flexible piezoelectric thin films are emphasized. Finally, some existing challenges and future perspectives are discussed.

Abstract:Piezoelectric and ferroelectric films are very promising materials for microelectronic applications. In this paper, some important issues for these materials and applications are reviewed, and recent progresses on integrated ferroelectrics have been given. The physical and chemical preparation methods of the silicon-based piezoelectric and ferroelectric films, such as Sol–Gel, sputtering, metal organic chemical vapor deposition, have been described and compared. To realize a microelectronic device, the integrated circuits compatible ferroelectric/piezoelectric etching method is very important. The wet-chemical etching methods and dry-etching methods, such as reactive ion etching, have been introduced. There are many important applications for the silicon-based piezoelectric and ferroelectric films. One is the micro-sensors or micro-actuators or micro-electro-mechanical-system. Another is the memory devices. Some typical devices using piezoelectric and ferroelectric films have been introduced.

Abstract:Over the last 30 years, the study of ferroelectric oxides has been revolutionized by the implementation of epitaxial-thin-film-based studies, which have driven many advances in the understanding of ferroelectric physics and the realization of novel polar structures and functionalities. New questions have motivated the development of advanced synthesis, characterization, and simulations of epitaxial thin films and, in turn, have provided new insights and applications across the micro-, meso-, and macroscopic length scales. This review traces the evolution of ferroelectric thin-film research through the early days developing understanding of the roles of size and strain on ferroelectrics to the present day, where such understanding is used to create complex hierarchical domain structures, novel polar topologies, and controlled chemical and defect profiles. The extension of epitaxial techniques, coupled with advances in high-throughput simulations, now stands to accelerate the discovery and study of new ferroelectric materials. Coming hand-in-hand with these new materials is new understanding and control of ferroelectric functionalities. Today, researchers are actively working to apply these lessons in a number of applications, including novel memory and logic architectures, as well as a host of energy conversion devices.

Abstract:The technological development of piezoelectric materials is crucial for developing wearable and flexible electromechanical devices. There are many inorganic materials with piezoelectric effects, such as piezoelectric ceramics, aluminum nitride and zinc oxide. They all have very high piezoelectric coefficients and large piezoelectric response ranges. The characteristics of high hardness and low tenacity make inorganic piezoelectric materials unsuitable for flexible devices that require frequent bending. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and its derivatives are the most popular materials used in flexible electromechanical devices in recent years and have high flexibility, high sensitivity, high ductility and a certain piezoelectric coefficient. Owing to increasing the piezoelectric coefficient of PVDF, researchers are committed to optimizing PVDF materials and enhancing their polarity by a series of means to further improve their mechanical-electrical conversion efficiency. This paper reviews the latest PVDF-related optimization-based materials, related processing and polarization methods and the applications of these materials in, e.g., wearable functional devices, chemical sensors, biosensors and flexible actuator devices for flexible micro-electromechanical devices. We also discuss the challenges of wearable devices based on flexible piezoelectric polymer, considering where further practical applications could be.

Abstract:Inorganic ferroelectric films exhibit excellent electric and optic properties, which have been widely used in dielectrics, memory, piezoelectric, photoelectric devices, etc. However, conventional synthesis strategies based on rigid single-crystal substrates severely limit their applications in flexible electronics. Realization of flexible inorganic ferroelectric films can introduce the excellent properties of inorganic ferroelectric materials into flexible devices, which is the developing trend for the next generation of electronic devices. In this review, the strategies to fabricate flexible inorganic perovskite structures' ferroelectric films are summarized, including 1) direct growth on flexible substrates, 2) transferring ferroelectric film from a rigid substrate to a flexible one. Subsequently, the applications of flexible inorganic ferroelectric films are briefly introduced. Finally, research status, prospects and future development trend of flexible inorganic ferroelectric films are discussed.

Abstract:As an important member of the dielectric family, ferroelectric materials are known for their various physical properties and have been attracted considerable attention from both scientific respect and technology respect. Piezoelectricity is one of the most important properties of ferroelectrics, which has been widely used in many devices for the conversion between electric energy and mechanical energy. For example, the main piezoelectric elements of underwater acoustic transducers, medical imaging systems, piezoelectric actuators, etc., are all ferroelectrics. In this paper, the history of the piezoelectric effect in lead-based perovskite ferroelectrics is introduced, and the relationship among the microstructure, the state of polarization and the piezoelectricity is discussed. In addition, we introduce some important factors for optimizing the piezoelectricity of ferroelectrics, such as morphotropic phase boundary, soft doping, polarization rotation, local structural heterogeneity, etc. It is expected that this paper could shed light on the future design of ferroelectric materials with various functionalities.

Abstract:Ferroelectric polymers are the most promising electroactive materials with outstanding properties that can be integrated into a variety of flexible electronic devices. Their multifunctional capabilities, ability to bend and stretch, ease of processing, chemical stability, and the high biocompatibility of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)‐based polymers make them attractive for applications in flexible memories, energy transducers, and electronic skins. Here, recent advance in the research of PVDF‐based flexible electronic devices is reviewed, including nonvolatile memories, energy‐harvesting devices, and multifunctional portable sensors.

Abstract:Piezo-/ferroelectric materials form an important class of functional materials that convert energies between electrical and mechanical energies, thus are critical for numerous applications. This chapter starts with an introduction of the piezo-/ferroelectric materials, followed by a detailed discussion on the recent progress on lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-based ceramics, relaxor-based piezoelectric single crystals, lead-free perovskite piezoelectric materials, high-temperature piezoelectric materials and textured piezoelectric ceramics. At last, the current and potential applications of piezo-/ferroelectric materials are presented.

Abstract:As multifunctional electroactive materials, ferroelectric polymers are unique owing to their exceptionally high dielectric strength (>600 MV/m), high flexibility, and easy and low-temperature fabrication into required shapes. Although polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)-based ferroelectric polymers have been known for several decades, recent findings reveal the potential of this class of electroactive polymers (EAPs) to achieve giant electroactive responses by tuning the molecular, nano, and meso-structures. This paper presents these advances, including giant electrocaloric effect, giant electroactuation, and large, hysteresis-free polarization response. New developments in materials benefit applications, such as environmentally benign and potentially highly energy-efficient electrical field controlled solid-state refrigeration, artificial muscles, and high-energy and power density electric energy storage devices. The challenges in developing these materials to realize these applications, and strategies to further improve the responses of EAPs will be also discussed.

Abstract:Ferroelectrics are a type of material with a polar structure and their polarization direction can be inverted reversibly by applying an electric field. They have attracted tremendous attention for their extensive applications in non-volatile memory, sensors and neuromorphic computing. However, conventional ferroelectric materials face insulating and interfacial issues in the commercialization process. In contrast, two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric materials usually have excellent semiconductor performance, clean van der Waals interfaces and robust ferroelectric order in atom-thick layers, and hold greater promise for constructing multifunctional ferroelectric optoelectronic devices and nondestructive ultra-high-density memory. Recently, 2D ferroelectrics have obtained impressive breakthroughs, showing overwhelming superiority. Herein, firstly, the progress of experimental research on 2D ferroelectric materials is reviewed. Then, the preparation of 2D ferroelectric devices and their applications are discussed. Finally, the future development trend of 2D ferroelectrics is looked at.

Abstract:Compared to the bulk piezoelectric materials counterpart, piezoelectric thin films (PTFs) possess advantages of smaller size, lower power consumption, better sensitivity, and have broad application in advanced micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) devices. However, the performance of MEMS transducers and actuators are largely limited by PTFs piezoelectric properties. In this review, we focus on understanding structure-property relationship of vapor deposited PTFs, with emphasis on the effect of strain energy and electrostatic energy in thin films, especially, energy relaxation induced misfit dislocation and ferroelectric (FS) and ferroelastic (FC) domain formation mechanisms. We then discuss the microstructure of these domains and their influential mechanisms on piezoelectric properties, as well as the domain engineering strategies (i.e., internal and external stimuli). This review will motivate further experimental, theoretical, and simulation studies on FS and FC domain engineering in PTFs.

Abstract:We present recent studies in the fundamentals and applications of the relaxor ferroelectric polymers, i.e., Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) terpolymers and high energy electron irradiated P(VDF-TrFE) copolymers. We show that the dynamic processes in these relaxor ferroelectric polymers are very similar to these observed in various polar-glasses. We further show that the large and reversible polarization change in these polymers leads to giant electrostriction and large electro-optic effect. By employing active electric boundary conditions, we demonstrate that the large electromechanical responses in these electroactive polymers can be made use of effectively for energy harvesting with high harvested electric energy density and efficiency. Terpolymer composites with ZnS nanoparticles provide an advanced E-O polymer which refractive index can be varied widely by small amount of ZnS in the composites while maintaining the large E-O effect of the matrix.
