Abstract:The Al2O3/ZrO2 (Y2O3) eutectics were prepared by the melt-grown and seeding melt-grown methods, two non-directional solidification methods. We identify the three-dimensional morphology and crystallographic orientations of the Al2O3/ZrO2 (Y2O3) eutectics using the focused ion beam milling with electron backscattered diffraction and the transmission electron microscopy. The results show that in the colony, there are three parts of the ZrO2 (Y2O3) phase composed of interconnected three-level rods. The crystallographic orientation of the colony axis is variable, but the growth directions of the rods show a commonality, <2̅ 0 2 1 >A, in the Al2O3/ ZrO2 (Y2O3) eutectics, which has been also clarified by the interface structure analysis. The analysis of the preferred growth orientation not only enlightens the growth mechanism of Al2O3/ZrO2 (Y2O3) eutectics but also provides a method for the design of novel eutectics.

Abstract:In order to study the forms of boron in Al-B alloys with lower boron content, and expand the application scope of Al-B alloys with lower boron content. Al-1B alloy was prepared by mechanical alloying and vacuum sintering, the formation and evolution mechanism of boron in Al melt were analyzed in detail. Owing to the high concentration gradient of boron at a certain point in the Al melt, AlB 12 is easily formed at first and then peritectic reaction between AlB 12 and Al happened forming AlB 12 @AlB 2 composite structure.The AlB 12 @AlB 2 composite structure is easily reserved and keeps stable in Al-1B alloy. During the boronization process, AlB 2 reacts with transition metal elements, and AlB 12 remains in the Al melt.The study is beneficial for improving the efficiency of boronization treatment. Abstract:Borides with varied morphologies and structures obtained by changing B content in as-cast Ti-45Al-2Mn-2Nb alloys are investigated. With the increase of B content, morphologies of borides change from curved to straight, and flake shape, ribbon shape, needle/rod shape, and blocky appear in turn. Curved boride particles have a lamellar structure composed of TiB2 and B2 layers, accompanied by the random appearance and distribution of Ti3B4 and Bf-TiB layers. Except for the absence of the B2 layer, straight needle-like and blocky boride particles have roughly the same structure as curved boride particles, revealing that the formation of curved boride particles is accompanied by divorced eutectic with the matrix and internal irregular eutectic, while no eutectics occurs in straight boride particles. The lack of B atoms during solidification in alloys with lower B content results in a less regular structure and higher stacking fault density of curved boride particles compared to straight boride particles in alloys with higher B content. In addition, some needle-like boride particles are observed to have pure B27-TiB structure without intergrowth. The difference in morphologies and structures can be attributed to the difference in formation mechanism and crystallographic structures of the borides.

Abstract:High Nb-containing TiAl alloys have been deemed ideal candidates for demanding structural applications under high temperatures due to their appealing mechanical qualities and low density. Nonetheless, its inherent brittleness at room temperature remains a significant impediment to its processability. Herein, different concentrations of boron were added into the Ti45Al8Nb2Cr (Ti4582) alloy by vacuum arc melting to tailor the microstructure and corresponding mechanical properties. The coarse lamellar colonies were significantly refined via boron addition, while excessive boron addition did harm to the mechanical properties. The different morphologies of the borides (Bf or B27) profoundly influenced the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-prepared alloys. Further elemental distribution, phase constitution, lamellar colony size, and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. Noteworthily, trace boron additions effectively improved the mechanical properties of Ti4582-xB alloys with an optimal adjustment in Ti4582-0.2B, showing 673MPa for room temperature ultimate tensile strength (UTS) with elongation of 1.3% and 1623MPa for ultimate compressive strength (UCS) with compressive strain of 32.5%. The improved mechanical properties of Ti4582-xB were mainly attributed to grain refining and second phase strengthening. Moreover, the hindrance and accommodation for dislocations by deformed twins and reinforcements effectively enhanced the mechanical properties.
Effect of Boron on Proeutectic Phase in Fe-0.77C-B Alloy Solidification Microstructure

Abstract:The research on the influence of boron on proeutectic phase of Fe-0.77C-B alloy was made by means of optical microscope and XRD analysis. The results show that the solidification microstructure of the Fe-0.77C-B alloy is made up of proeutectic phase and eutectic structure, and the kind and the amount of the proeutectic phase are determined by boron content. It is confirmed that there is no Fe 2B in the solidification microstructure of the alloy and the proeutectic phase is austenite when boron content is low. However, with the increase of boron, amount of proeutectic austenite decreases. In the sample of 3.09% boron, proeutectic phase is not austenite but Fe 2B.

Abstract:Borides have been found to play a significant role in determining the mechanical properties of cast TiAl alloys. In order to investigate the influence of cooling rate on the morphology and structure of borides, SEM and HRTEM techniques were utilized to analyze borides in Ti-43Al-4 Nb-1Mo-0.5B (at%) cast plates with varying thicknesses. A higher cooling rate was observed to result in the formation of elongated, curvy borides with high aspect ratios, increased planar faults, and complex structures consisting of a combination of B2 phase and various boride phases. Conversely, a slower cooling rate yielded shorter bar-shaped borides with fewer planar faults. This variation in boride morphology can be attributed to the differing thicknesses of the solute-rich layer, where the eutectic reaction occurs, at the solidification front during fast and slow cooling processes. The Bf-TiB with a habit plane of (010) was identified as the dominant phase at all cooling rates. Borides in the [100] and [001] directions demonstrated a faster growth rate compared to those in the [010] direction. Additionally, HRTEM results indicated the presence of TiB2 while Ti3B4 was absent. This can be explained by the limited phase region of Ti3B4 in both the binary Ti-B and ternary Ti-Al-B phase diagrams, which is the smallest among all phases. These findings enhance the understanding of how cooling rate influences the morphology and structure of borides in TiAl alloys, thus providing insights for optimizing alloy design and manufacturing processes.

Abstract:In this study, tungsten boride coating was grown on pure tungsten substrate by pack boriding method for improved neutron shielding ability. The microstructure, growth kinetics and radiation shielding performance were systematically studied. It is found that the boronized layer shows a dual-phase structure under the boriding temperature of 950–1050 °C. The main layer closes to coating surface is identified to be the WB phase, while the inner layer adjacent to the substrate is W 2 B. Thermodynamics calculation proves the W 2 B is more favored to nucleate and grow adhering to W than α-WB. Once the W 2 B layer was formed, further increasing boron concentration enables to introduce the formation of WB at the interface. On the basis of the calculated WB phase diagram, two separated diffusion models were developed to elucidate the growth of WB with composition gradient and W 2 B with constant composition. The diffusion coefficients of boron in boride phases as well as the activation energy for boron diffusion were estimated. Finally, the large improvement of neutron attenuation ability for tungsten specimen upon boriding treatment was demonstrated. Our findings could provide new directions for developing high performance radiation shielding materials.

Abstract:The eutectic high-entropy alloys have shown promising mechanical behaviours while their softening at elevated temperatures is still a challenge. Generally, the boundaries are the weak parts to be strengthened with increased temperatures in eutectic high-entropy alloys. Here, we found that the minor addition of boron in Ni 30 Co 30 Cr 10 Fe 10 Al 18 W 2 eutectic high-entropy alloy can significantly strengthen the FCC grain boundaries and the FCC/B2 phase boundaries at elevated temperatures. A remarkable tensile yield strength over 581 MPa with elongation of 71% at 800°C is achieved with minor boron addition, corresponding to a 45% increase in yield strength and 129% improvement in ductility compared with the boron-free counterpart. Accompanied by the boron-strengthened phase boundary, sustainable dynamic recovery occurs in the FCC and B2 phases during high-temperature tensile testing, ensuring excellent ductility. Moreover, the benchmark test indicates that the strengthening effect of boron and borides on the boundaries contributes up to 166 MPa to the yield strength of eutectic high-entropy alloy at 800°C. These findings shed light on the development of high-temperature eutectic high-entropy alloys with a microalloying strategy.

Effects of boron content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of twin-roll strip casting borated steel sheets

Abstract:<p>High borated steel sheets containing 0.25 wt% to 4.0 wt% boron including hypoeutectic (0.28 wt% B and 2.11 wt% B), eutectic (2.43 wt% B) and hypereutectic (4.01 wt% B) compositions were tried to be fabricated by a novel strip casting technology, and the effects of boron content on sub-rapid solidification behavior and subsequent microstructural evolution together with mechanical properties was studied. It was found that the morphology of borides depended greatly on the boron content. When increasing boron, the morphological change of borides was network-like → grainy → cluster-like → plate-like. Various orientation relationships between different morphological borides and γ-Fe in as-cast steels were also identified. After subsequent hot-rolling and solution-treating, ultra-fine (<10 μm) borides were obtained in hypoeutectic and eutectic steels. Benefiting from that, excellent mechanical properties was achieved, which was much better than that of steels prepared by traditional ingot casting. Particularly, when the boron content approached eutectic composition, of which the effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties was more sensitive. The steels containing 2.11 wt% and 2.43 wt% boron exhibited different morphological borides with a total elongation of 14.1% and 8.0%, respectively. Moreover, a thin hypereutectic borated steel sheet was also prepared, but the borides were very large and the total elongation was very low. The correlation between microstructure and strength was clarified based on the Hall-Petch behavior and intermetallic strengthening effect. Smaller γ-grains and higher volume fraction of borides were responsible for higher strength. The plastic behavior of steels was influenced by strain-hardening rate that was determined by the volume fraction of γ-Fe matrix. A better sustainable strain-hardening capability was beneficial to extend the stage of uniform deformation and enhance the ductility. In addition, the mechanical properties of steels were also decided by the fracture mechanism that was dominated by the size of borides.</p>

Abstract:The effects of B addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of a γ′-strengthened CoNi-base superalloy are investigated. The addition of B leads to a substantial increase in the volume fraction of both the eutectic structure and borides. The CoNi-base alloy shows a high solubility limit for the element B. Borides become noticeable in the area surrounding the eutectic structure after the B level exceeds 0.46 at.%. It is found that the compression property and stress rupture life of the 4W2Ta alloys exhibit an initial rise followed by a subsequent drop as the B content gradually increases from 0.08 to 0.78 at.%. The 4W2Ta0.46B alloy demonstrates the most excellent high-temperature strength and stress rupture life, revealing that a moderate amount of B in the alloy noticeably enhances its mechanical properties by enhancing the grain boundary cohesion.

Abstract:The effect of boron addition (50 ppm) on solidification and segregation characteristics of S31254 superaustenitic stainless steel is investigated through experimental research and theoretical calculation. The optimal thermal deformation range of boron‐free and boron‐containing steels is determined by establishing the constitutive equation and the processing map. Boron plays a positive role in improving segregation and hot ductility. Solidification structure and segregation behavior of S31254 superaustenitic stainless steel ingot containing 0 wt% B and 0.005 wt% B are investigated. The results show that serious element segregation and massive eutectics are present in the center of the ingot. By contrast, the addition of boron reduces the secondary dendrite spacing, the degree of elemental segregation, and the σ phase. Further, the effect of boron on the solidification process is studied by using the high‐temperature confocal laser scanning microscope and combined with Thermo‐Calc thermodynamic simulation results. The results show that boron can widen the solidification temperature range and greatly retard the matrix solidification. The role of boron in refining dendrite structure and inhibiting precipitation is further confirmed. The effect of boron on the constitutive equation of S31254 superaustenitic stainless steel has also been researched through isothermal compression testing in the temperature range of 950–1200 °C and strain rate range of 0.01–10 s−1. The activation energy of the boron‐free and boron‐containing S31254 superaustenitic stainless steels based on the constitutive equation are 427.77 and 495.80 kJ mol−1, respectively. Processing maps indicate that the instability domain is significantly reduced and the hot ductility is improved after the addition of B.

Abstract:<p>Eutectic highentropy alloys (EHEAs) have attracted wide attention in the metallic materials community because of its excellent castability, fine and controllable microstructure. However, the design method for eutectic EHEAs is still a challenge. In present work, a new infinite solid solution strategy was proposed to design EHEAs. Using this strategy, a series of EHEAs composed of ordered body centeredcubic (B2) and bodycentered cubic (BCC) phases were successfully developed with nano-structured precipitated phase. Some of the designed alloys in the current work have exhibited excellent compressive mechanical properties.</p>

Abstract:Eutectic modification through minor addition of boron was firstly proposed to improve the malleability of brittle eutectic high-entropy alloys (EHEAs). The proposed approach involves adding small amounts of eutectic modifier, boron (0.2–1.6 at.%), to a brittle dual-phase [face centred cubic (FCC) and σ phase] Fe35Ni25Cr25Mo15 EHEA. Here, we report the role of boron additions in improvement of the mechanical properties of a Fe35Ni25Cr25Mo15 EHEA. It was found that with the increase in boron additions up to 1 at.%, the lamellar eutectic structure consisting of FCC and σ intermetallic phase gradually transited to a dendrite-like eutectic structure. As a result, the compressive fracture strain of the alloy was increased about 3 times with a slight reduction in strength. The mechanisms of eutectic morphology transition induced by boron additions in the Fe35Ni25Cr25Mo15 EHEA and their effects on mechanical properties were studied through microstructural characterization and thermodynamic analyses. The transition of eutectic morphology from lamellar eutectic to dendrite eutectic is believed to be resulted from the increased constitutional undercooling caused by B additions.The solute redistribution of B in the liquid ahead of the solid/liquid interface resulted in a B concentration gradient, which led to the formation of a constitutionally undercooled zone at the front of the σ phase, which destabilized the coupled growth conditions necessary for the formation of the lamellar eutectic structure. As a result, the eutectic morphology was transformed from lamellar eutectic to a dendritic-like eutectic structure. This type of structure exhibits a lower fraction of phase boundaries leading to improved malleability of the brittle EHEA. This insight can be used to design new advanced EHEAs through adjustment of the eutectic morphology.

Abstract:The microstructure and the shape memory effect of Cu-13.0Al-4.0Ni high temperature shape memory alloys doped with different contents of boron (0.25 wt%, 0.5 wt%, 1.0 wt%, and 2.0 wt%) were studied in this paper. According to the obtained results, it was observed that the microstructure and the shape memory effect were sensitive to the addition of boron, and the addition of boron not only enhanced the mechanical properties of the Cu-13.0Al-4.0Ni alloy, but also greatly improved the shape memory effect of the alloy. The fracture of martensite changed from intergranular fracture to transgranular cleavage fracture. Abstract:Boron-rich tungsten borides tend to adopt mechanically unfavorable layered structures but experimentally exhibit excellent mechanical properties rivalling traditional superhard solids. Unravelling the contraindicated structure-property relationship, however, has been impeded by their structural ambiguities because of the difficulty in probing boron and atomic deficiency of these borides. Here, we study crystal structures of boron-rich tungsten borides WB3+x and WB2+x by neutron diffraction based on high-quality samples prepared by a high-pressure method, leading to definitive structural resolutions for both borides with unique compositions of WB5.14 and WB2.34. Combined with theoretical calculations, their structural stability is revealed to be closely related to atomic deficiency, which is governed by the valence-band filling with an optimal valence-electron concentration of ∼10 per cell. The presence of interstitial boron trimers at the vacant W:2b sites in WB5.14 alters the crystal symmetry, making the Wyckoff 2d site more favorably occupied by W, rather than the 2c site, as previously misassigned. The staggered planar boron layers and wrinkled boron bonding in WB2.34 are identified to be crucial for stabilizing its structure. These findings unveil the longstanding structural mysteries of boron-rich tungsten borides and offer powerful insights for rational design of borides by defect chemistry.

Abstract:The effects of static electric fields applied on the directional solidification of Al–Cu eutectic alloy are studied. The eutectic morphology and lamellar structure are observed in three experimental conditions, both with positive and negative electric fields. The experimental results show that positive and negative electric fields increase the lamellar spacing and the number of laminates. Electric fields increase the grain size but decrease the volume fraction. The analysis shows that the electric fields accelerate atom diffusion in liquid, which increases the lamellar spacing and grain size. The experimental results show that the electric fields have similar effect on the surface and inner surface of the specimen.

Abstract:We demonstrate the structure evolution of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) flakes grown on molten Cu in atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition by regulating the flux of precursor. We found that under lower precursor flux, tuned by temperature that controls the sublimation rates, the hBN grains change from triangle to truncated triangle shape with additional B-terminated edges, which could be understood through kinetic Wulff construction, while under higher flux, they form circular shape following deposition-controlled growth and predicted by a phase field modeling. In addition to the monolayer morphology from a single nucleation, adlayer patterns with centered aggregation and diffusive features at high precursor flux are observed and simulated by a two-dimensional (2D) diffusion-reaction model, where the random diffusion and deposition are revealed to be the dominating kinetics. The nucleation density and growth velocity could also be modulated by the ammonia borane heating temperature, where 80 °C is found to be optimal for the largest hBN grain size. Our transmission electron microscopy study shows that a misalignment of coalescing grains occurs on such molten Cu substrate, deviated from those observed on molten Au. Our results provide a new tool for the shape and grain size control of 2D materials and the understanding of their growth kinetics for large scale production.

Abstract:The discovery of borospherenes unveiled the capacity of boron to form fullerene-like cage structures. While fullerenes are known to entrap metal atoms to form endohedral metallofullerenes, few metal atoms have been observed to be part of the fullerene cages. Here we report the observation of a class of remarkable metallo-borospherenes, where metal atoms are integral parts of the cage surface. We have produced La3B18- and Tb3B18- and probed their structures and bonding using photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Global minimum searches revealed that the most stable structures of Ln3B18- are hollow cages with D3h symmetry. The B18-framework in the Ln3B18- cages can be viewed as consisting of two triangular B6 motifs connected by three B2 units, forming three shared B10 rings which are coordinated to the three Ln atoms on the cage surface. These metallo-borospherenes represent a new class of unusual geometry that has not been observed in chemistry heretofore.
