Abstract:Availability, renewability, biodegradability, and excellent mechanical strength of lignin result in the growing interest in using it for commodity polymer development. Therefore, several attempts have been made and reported in the literatures to develop polymer from it. Despite several attempts, factors such as self-aggregation, low reactivity, and solubility still have limited the large-scale application of lignin. Therefore, to control these factors, here in this work, we have modified lignin with a reactive functional molecule Epichlorohydrin (ECH) to prepare epoxidized lignin (EL). Later, the copolymer, Lignin-Polylactic acid (Lig-PLA) was synthesized by graft polymerization of Lactic acid (LA) on EL. Synthesized EL, and Lig-PLA copolymer were characterized through FT-IR, XPS, and Solid-state 13C NMR analysis. Higher weight (wt) loss along with high rate of crystallinity from TGA and XRD analysis confirmed increased grafting of LA onto EL while synthesizing copolymers of Lig-PLA with increased amount of LA. The hydraulic hot press technique was used to prepare 250 micron thin Lig-PLA copolymer film. Lig-PLA copolymers prepared with LA ≥ 50 wt% produced polymer films with very good flexibility which confirms that a flexible film can be prepared with high lignin content from this method.

Abstract:The recent advancements on the development of sustainable copolymers from lignin, has led us to explore a novel two‐step methodology for the development of lignin‐derived copolymers for flexible film preparation. In this work, firstly, chemical modification of lignin with itaconic acid (IA) in green solvent followed by grafting with lactic acid (LA) via solvent free polycondensation pathway was used to produce Lig‐g‐PLA copolymers. The effect of various reaction parameters like IA and LA amount, reaction time, solvent, temperature was studied to optimize yield of the reaction. Analytical techniques (FT‐IR, NMR, and XPS) confirmed successful chemical modification of lignin and copolymer (Lig‐g‐PLA) synthesis. The change in flexibility behavior of the polymer thin films (250 microns) prepared through hydraulic hot press method found to be dependent on the LA grafting. Notably, smooth surface of the films prepared with LA amount (IAL:LA 1:3 wt ratio) indicates enhanced compatibility between copolymer molecules due to the grafting of LA. Additionally, films prepared with a higher LA amount (i.e., IAL:LA 1:4 wt ratio) exhibited superior mechanical property with 3 times higher storage modulus as compared to the film prepared with lower LA amount (i.e., IAL:LA 1:2 wt ratio).

Abstract:Effective utilization of abundant industrial lignin has growingly attracted much attention besides potential environmental issues. Although chemical graft polymerization modification is one facile strategy for extending its applications, it remains an intractable challenge to select a highly efficient initiation system. We herein have attempt to understand the CaCl2–H2O2 system in initiating the graft polymerization of acrylic monomers onto acetic acid lignin (AAL) and biobutanol lignin (BBL). The initiation system is found to be highly efficient and selective, as proved by the successful graft of polyacrylates onto them, and a possible mechanism is also proposed. Thermal analysis shows that the graft modification results in a higher glass transition temperature and higher thermal stability of lignin. The graft modification make both AAL and BBL become more hydrophobic than before modification. Abstract:Despite its aromatic and polymeric nature, the heterogeneous, stochastic, and reactive characteristics of softwood kraft lignin seriously limit its potential for thermoplastic applications. Our continuing efforts toward creating thermoplastic lignin polymers are now focused at exploring propargylation derivatization chemistry and its potential as a versatile novel route for the eventual utilization of technical lignins with a significant amount of molecular control. To do this, we initially report the systematic propargylation of softwood kraft lignin. The synthesized derivatives were extensively characterized with thermal methods (DSC, TGA), (1)H, (13)C, and quantitative (31)P NMR and IR spectroscopies. Further on, we explore the versatile nature of the lignin pendant propargyl groups by demonstrating two distinct chain extension chemistries; the solution-based, copper-mediated, oxidative coupling and the thermally induced, solid-state, Claissen rearrangement polymerization chemistries. Overall, we show that it is possible to modulate the reactivity of softwood kraft lignin via a combination of methylation and chain extension providing a rational means for the creation of higher molecular weight polymers with the potential for thermoplastic materials and carbon fibers with the desired control of structure-property relations.

Abstract:Currently, it is challenging to make biodegradable polylactic acids (PLA) composite films which possess high strength and toughness. To achieve the same, Lignin is unrivalled reinforcing filler which can be used in the bioplastic because of its high mechanical strength and antioxidant properties. Here, lignin has been in situ polymerized with L-lactic acid to create lignin grafted polylactic acid co-polymers which have been later combined with PLA matrix to prepare composites films with improved properties. Various analysis techniques i.e. C 13 NMR, 1 H NMR, and FTIR were conducted on lignin grafted lactic acid copolymer which confirmed the presence of ester linkages between lignin and lactic acid. The findings show that a modest quantity of filler can increase crystallinity, while lowering glass transition temperature and cold crystallization temperature. Additionally, the PLA composite film with 12% filler content exhibited 26.4 MPa tensile strength with 17.91% elongation at break and 1.4 GPa Young's modulus. The films also demonstrated strong antioxidant qualities done through radical scavenging, making them quite viable in packaging applications.

Abstract:Lignin, a valuable polymer of natural origin, displays numerous desired intrinsic properties; however, modification processes leading to the value-added products suitable for composite materials' applications are in demand. Chemical modification routes involve mostly reactions with hydroxyl groups present in the structure of lignin, but other paths, such as copolymerization or grafting, are also utilized. On the other hand, physical techniques, such as irradiation, freeze-drying, and sorption, to enhance the surface properties of lignin and the resulting composite materials, are developed. Various kinds of chemically or physically modified lignin are discussed in this review and their effects on the properties of polymeric (bio)materials are presented. Lignin-induced enhancements in green polymer composites, such as better dimensional stability, improved hydrophobicity, and improved mechanical properties, along with biocompatibility and non-cytotoxicity, have been presented. This review addresses the challenges connected with the efficient modification of lignin, which depends on polymer origin and the modification conditions. Finally, future outlooks on modified lignins as useful materials on their own and as prospective biofillers for environmentally friendly polymeric materials are presented.

Abstract:The present work describes the synthesis, characterisation and antimicrobial activity of lignin-polylactic acid (PLA) blended film. Film was prepared using co-polymerisation reaction of lignin and lactic acid in the presence of stannous chloride as a catalyst and poly(vinyl alcohol) to get the uniform film. The properties of the film was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. The lignin-PLA film demonstrated a significant decrease in swelling ratio and tensile strength in contrast to PLA film. SEM analysis revealed proper blending of lignin into PLA matrix with slightly rough surface. Film was thermostable and amorphous in nature as confirmed from the thermal study and XRD analysis, respectively. Further, significant improvement was observed in antimicrobial activity and biodegradability of PLA film after addition of lignin, which suggest the putative application of lignin-PLA film as the food packaging and mulch film materials.

Abstract:Alkaline lignin and sodium lignosulfonate were chemically modified by using maleic acid for potential application on the production of ultra-flexible gelatin films. The comparison results in morphology and chemical structures of the two types of lignin before and after modification revealed that carboxyl and CC groups were successfully grafted onto the lignin, resulting in the changes in physical-chemical properties. Compared to modified sodium lignosulfonate, modified alkaline lignin (MAL) was much more appropriate in the preparation of gelatin (GEL)/lignin films by endowing the films with transparency and excellent UV light shielding ability. Elongation at break of GEL/MAL films were more than two times that of the pure gelatin film, which greatly addressed the brittleness issues of the pure gelatin films during use, indicating that the modified alkaline lignin could be used as renewable additive with replacement of glycerol. The results in this study also gave evidence that the sources and structure of lignin affect its compatibility with gelatin solution. The higher weight loss rate and lower pyrolysis degradation temperature indicated that the gelatin/lignin films were much more easily thermal degradable at the end of service life. This research provided a potential and efficient approach on the production of renewable and biological films from gelatin and lignin.

Abstract:Liquid mulching film is an emerging film material to replace the traditional plastic film, which causes wide public concern. In this study, a graft copolymer (LS-AA) was synthesized from sodium lignosulfonate (LS) by free radical polymerization, which was added as enhancer to the cationic starch (CS) solutions to obtain the CLA based film. The grafting conditions was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) for the preparation of LS-AA, after that the LS-AA was characterized by FTIR, XRD, and TG. The highest grafting rate was obtained under the reaction conditions of 80 °C for 2.6 h with the mass ratio of monomer and LS of 5.5/5 at initiator dosage of 1 %. The fabricated liquid mulching film with addition of LS-AA showed outstanding anti-ultraviolet, biodegradation, anti-erosion, which provided theoretical base and practical references for popularizing and application of liquid mulching film in the dust prevention and sand fixation.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant aromatic polymer in nature, and its depolymerization offers excellent opportunities to develop renewable aromatic chemicals. In the present study, Bacillus sp. PCH94 was investigated for laccase production and lignin depolymerization. Maximum production of laccase enzyme was achieved within 6.0 h at 50 °C on a natural lignocellulosic substrate. Furthermore, Bacillus sp. PCH94 was used to bioconvert lignin dimeric and polymeric substrates, validated using FT-IR, NMR (1H, 13C), and LCMS. Genome mining of Bacillus sp. PCH94 revealed laccase gene (lacBl) as multicopper oxidase (spore coat CotA). Further, lacBl from Bacillus sp. PCH94 was cloned, expressed, and kinetically characterized. LacBl enzyme showed activity for substrates ABTS (40.64 IU/mg), guaiacol (5.43 IU/mg), and DMP (11.93 IU/mg). The LacBl was active in higher temperatures (10 to 100 °C) and showed a half-life of 36 and 27 h at 50 and 60 °C, respectively. The purified LacBl was able to depolymerize kraft lignin into valuable products (ferulic acid and acetovanillone), which have applications in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Overall, the current study demonstrated the role of bacterial laccase in the depolymerization of lignin and opened a promising prospect for the green production of valuable compounds from recalcitrant lignin.

Abstract:Abstract Softwood kraft lignin is a major bioresource relevant to the production of sustainable bio-based products. Continued challenges to lignin valorization, however, include poor solubility in organic solvents and in aqueous solutions at neutral pH. Herein, an alkaline tolerant laccase was used to graft acrylate functionalities onto softwood kraft lignin, which is expected to enhance the reactivity of lignin with isocyanate when producing bio-based polyurethanes. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography were used to confirm successful grafting of the acrylate monomer onto lignin and verify the importance of including tert-butyl hydroperoxide as an initiator in the grafting reaction. Laccase-mediated grafting of softwood kraft lignin under alkaline conditions produced lignin products with approximately 30% higher hydroxyl value and higher reactivity toward isocyanate. The reported enzymatic and aqueous process presents an opportunity for the sustainable valorization of softwood kraft lignin. Abstract:Introducing vinyl groups onto the backbone of technical lignin provides an opportunity to create highly reactive renewable polymers suitable for radical polymerization. In this work, the chemical modification of softwood kraft lignin was pursued with etherification, followed by direct esterification with acrylic acid (AA). In the first step, phenolic hydroxyl and carboxylic acid groups were derivatized into aliphatic hydroxyl groups using ethylene carbonate and an alkaline catalyst. The lignin was subsequently fractionated using a downward precipitation method to recover lignin of defined molar mass and solubility. After recovery, the resulting material was then esterified with AA, resulting in lignin with vinyl functional groups. The first step resulted in approximately 90% of phenolic hydroxyl groups being converted into aliphatic hydroxyls, while the downward fractionation resulted in three samples of lignin with defined molar masses. For the esterification reaction, the weight ratio of reagents, reaction temperature, and reaction time were evaluated as factors that would influence the modification efficacy. 13C NMR spectroscopy analysis of lignin samples before and after esterification showed that the optimized reaction conditions could reach approximately 40% substitution of aliphatic hydroxyl groups. Both steps only used lignin and the modifying reagent (no solvent), with the possibility of recovery and reuse of the reagent by dilution and distillation. An additional second esterification step of the resulting lignin sample with acetic acid or propionic acid converted 90% of remaining hydroxyl groups into short-chain carbon aliphatic esters, making a hydrophobic material suitable for further copolymerization with synthetic hydrophobic monomers.

Abstract:Lignin is an abundant natural feedstock that offers great potential as a renewable substitute for fossil-based. Its polyaromatic structure and unique properties have attracted significant research efforts. The advantages of an enzymatic over chemical or thermal approach to construct or deconstruct lignins are it operates in mild conditions, requires less energy and usually uses non-toxic chemicals. Laccase is a widely investigated oxidative enzyme that can catalyze the polymerization and depolymerization of lignin. Its dual nature causes a challenge in controlling the overall direction of lignin-laccase catalysis. In this review paper, the factors that affect laccase-catalyzed lignin polymerization were summarized, evaluated, and compared in order to identify key features that favor lignin polymerization. In addition, a critical assessment of the conditions that enabled production of novel lignin hybrids via laccase-catalyzed grafting were presented. To assess the industrial relevance of laccase-assisted lignin valorization, patented applications were surveyed and industrial challenges and opportunities were analyzed. Finally, our perspective in realizing the full potential of laccase in building lignin-based materials for advanced applications was deduced from analysis of the limitations governing laccase-assisted lignin polymerization and grafting.

Citric acid crosslinked ternary blended (polyvinyl alcohol, lignin, lemongrass essential oil/nanoemulsions) biopolymeric hydrogel films: structural, functional, antioxidant, antifungal and biodegradable properties

Abstract:Rice straw is chemically constituted of three major biopolymers i.e. cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin which hold immense potential for conversion into various high-value materials. In the present study, attempts were made to valorize lignin, an aromatic phenolic polymer, via fabricaton of biopolymeric films. For this, alkali lignin was extracted from rice straw and lemongrass essential oil nanoemulsions were prepared with mean droplet diameter (spherical shape as revealed by transmission electron micrograph) and polydispersity index, 123.4 nm and 0.125, respectively. Citric acid crosslinked ternary blended i.e. polyvinyl alcohol, lignin, lemongrass essential oil/nanoemulsions biopolymeric hydrogel films were fabricated and their physical, structural and functional properties were assessed. The highest tensile strength and elongation at break were 24.31 MPa and 33.08% for OL3 (oil with 3000 ppm lignin) and NL2 (nanoemulsion with 2000 ppm lignin), respectively. NL2 films exhibited highest %DPPH radical scavenging activity (78.05%), highest % inhibition in size (74%) and number (95.94%) of colony forming units of Aspergillus niger. All the synthesized films showed appreciable biodegradability in soil with maximum % weight loss experienced in NL2 films (91.11%). These biopolymeric hydrogel films can be explored for use as sustainable alternatives to synthetic plastic wraps used extensively in food packaging industries to minimize plastic consumption.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Lignin as an abundant biological macromolecule isolated from the plant cell wall, and it cannot be efficiently utilized until suitable modifications to its structures were made. Therefore, we proposed a strategy to prepare an all biomass-based Lignin-graft-poly(Lauryl methacrylate, LMA) by grafting LMA monomers on the organosolv lignin through ARGET ATRP. The results of FT-IR and <sup>1</sup>H NMR analysis demonstrated that PLMA molecular chains were successfully grafted on the lignin. Lignin improved copolymer's thermal stability and had a negligible effect on crystallization of PLMA molecular chains, according to our findings in the test of TGA and DSC. The rheological properties of the copolymer were found depending on the length of molecular chains of copolymer and lignin inside it. Both height and phase images of AFM suggest that lignin constituted a nanoscale aciculas and embedded in the microscale spheral dot composed by grafted PLMA molecular chains. Furthermore, the integrated consideration of results of all characterizations suggests a relative independent micro-component, which was composed by central lignin and peripheral PLMA, aggregates with each other to build the OL-g-PLMA copolymers. It hopes that the copolymer will be used as an additive for improving mechanical performance and UV blocking of other biopolymers.

Abstract:In this study, the effect of lignin esterification with fatty acid chloride on the properties of lignin and lignin/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites was investigated. Lignocellulose (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) was treated using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) with choline chloride (ChCl)/lactic acid (LA). From the DES-soluble fraction, DES-lignin (DL) was isolated by a regeneration process. Lignin esterification was conducted with palmitoyl chloride (PC). As the PC loading increased for DL esterification, the Mw of esterified DL (EDL) was increased, and the glass transition temperature (Tg) was decreased. In DL or EDL/PLA composite films, it was observed that EDL/PLA had cleaner and smoother morphological characteristics than DL/PLA. The addition of DL or EDL in a PLA matrix resulted in a deterioration of tensile properties as compared with neat PLA. The EDL/PLA composite film had a higher tensile strength and elastic modulus than the DL/PLA composite film. DL esterification decreased water absorption with lower water diffusion coefficients. The effect of lignin esterification on improving the compatibility of lignin and PLA was demonstrated. These results are expected to contribute to the development of high-strength lignin composites.

Abstract:Lignin and cellulose derivatives have vast potential to be applied in polymer materials. The preparation of cellulose and lignin derivatives through esterification modification is an important method to endow cellulose and lignin with good reactivity, processability and functionality. In this study, ethyl cellulose and lignin are modified via esterification to prepare olefin−functionalized ethyl cellulose and lignin, which are further used to prepare cellulose and lignin cross−linker polymers via thiol–ene click chemistry. The results show that the olefin group concentration in olefin−functionalized ethyl cellulose and lignin reached 2.8096 mmol/g and 3.7000 mmol/g. The tensile stress at break of the cellulose cross−linked polymers reached 23.59 MPa. The gradual enhancement in mechanical properties is positively correlated with the olefin group concentration. The existence of ester groups in the cross−linked polymers and degradation products makes them more thermally stable. In addition, the microstructure and pyrolysis gas composition are also investigated in this paper. This research is of vast significance to the chemical modification and practical application of lignin and cellulose.

Abstract:This article aimed to study the effects of chitosan fiber and a newly modifying agent, based on organosolv lignin, on mechanical and thermal performances and the enzymatic degradation of PLA/chitosan biocomposites. A newly modifying agent based on polyacrylic acid-grafted organosolv lignin (PAA-g-OSL) was synthesized via free radical copolymerization using t-butyl peroxide as the initiator. The biocomposites were prepared using an internal mixer and the hot-pressed method at various fiber loadings. The results demonstrate that the addition of chitosan fiber into PLA biocomposites remarkably decreases tensile strength and elongation at break. However, it improves the Young's modulus. The modified biocomposites clearly demonstrat an improvement in tensile strength by approximately 20%, with respect to the unmodified ones, upon the presence of PAA-g-OSL. Moreover, the thermal stability of the modified biocomposites was enhanced significantly, indicating the effectiveness of the thermal protective barrier of the lignin's aromatic structure belonging to the modifying agent during pyrolysis. In addition, a slower biodegradation rate was exhibited by the modified biocomposites, relative to the unmodified ones, that confirms the positive effects of their improved interfacial interaction, resulting in a decreased area that was degraded through enzyme hydrolysis.
