Abstract:The policy of a flexible work schedule has been practiced for years in order to stimulate the redistribution of departure time of commuters. However, its potential influence on travelers’ departure time shifts is infrequently seen in existing studies. This study extended an agent-based positive departure time choice model to gain perspective on travelers’ dynamic reaction toward the flexible work schedule policy. Unlike most rational behavior models, the positive model emphasizes the bounded rationality in people's actual behavior and allows for heterogeneity among travelers. Dynamic traffic assignment is integrated with this proposed model to build up a feedback loop between individual choice (demand side) and network performance (supply side). Scenarios of different percentages of the population with a flexible work schedule are analyzed. It is found that travelers with flexibility in their work schedules tend to depart for work later to avoid peak periods in the morning. The average travel time in the network will decrease by at most 22% when 60% of the travelers have flexible work schedules.

Abstract:We find that rapid worker turnover significantly disrupts the productivity of responsive manufacturers. Our study uses a uniquely rich dataset drawn from China-based FATP (final assembly, testing, and packaging) facilities that produce millions of units of consumer electronic goods weekly yet exhibit high worker turnover exceeding 300% annually. The data cover the firm's weekly production plans, 52,214 workers' compensations and assignments, and assembly station productivity. To study managerial prescriptions, we extend the classical production planning problem to include endogenous worker turnover as an Experience-Based Equilibrium and use advances in reinforcement learning and approximate dynamic programming to estimate and simulate our model. Our empirical analyses exploit instrumental variables, including the firm's demand forecasts as ``demand shifters''. We find that turnover's impact on yield waste is conservatively $146-178M, and that a well-calibrated wage increase reduces the manufacturer's variable production costs (including wages) by up to 21%, or $594M for the product we study. The wage increase reduces the firm's reliance on a larger workforce and overtime to hedge against yield disruptions from turnover; it stabilizes a leaner workforce and improves both production reliability and flexibility. In settings where performance depends on workers repeating known tasks in coordinated groups, our results suggest that firms responsively matching supply to demand can pay a steep price for a disruptively turnover-prone workforce.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: We explored the association between work schedules involving nightshifts and selected measures of health and whether these associations differed among those working in either 3- or 4-shift cycles.METHODS: Employees at a German industrial company who worked on a fixed daytime schedule or on one involving nightshifts were invited to participate in this cross-sectional study. Work schedules involving a nightshift were organized into either 3 or 4 shifts rotated anti-clockwise on a weekly basis. Health characteristics included a range of clinical and physiological measures and self-reported data on stress and sleep quality. We assessed the independent association of work schedules involving any nightshift and these health characteristics in separate regression analyses, adjusting for age, gender, smoking, and alcohol consumption.RESULTS: Nightshift work (N = 133) in general and 3-shift-work (N = 53) in particular was associated with decreased sleep quality (P < 0.001). Compared to those working daytime (N = 632), employees working on a 3-shift cycle had higher adjusted odds of meeting the definition of metabolic syndrome (OR = 2.56 [1.38, 4.75]). Employees working 4-shift cycles were somewhat less likely to have metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.22 [0.73, 2.05]) and had higher parasympathetic activity measured by heart rate variability (OR = 2.20 [1.04, 4.63]).CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest important relationships between shift schedule and a selected group of objective and subjective health measures. Additional research that further clarifies potential mechanisms underlying these relationships is needed.

Night today, day tomorrow: how irregular work shifts interfere with our psychological health

Abstract:The 24/7 economic activity has led to a growing demand for shift workers who now make up about 21% of the working population in Europe. Shift work causes desynchronization of biological and social rhythms and therefore increases the risk for physiological and psychological health issues. Night shifts, but in particular irregular shifts are considered to have numerous harmful effects on health and well-being. In this investigation, 185 shift workers employed at an Austrian railway company, filled in online questionnaires, which included the PSQI, the ESS, and items assessing sleep issues, their impact on life quality, and individual shift schedules. Results show that those shift workers who rated their shifts schedules as irregular reported significantly lower sleep quality according to the PSQI Global Score and the PSQI subscales subjective sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, and sleep duration. The probability of taking sleep medication was higher in shift workers whose schedules include more night shifts. In addition, participants who regularly worked on days after night shifts classified their complaints due to shift work as more severe. Future investigations should include more external and internal factors that influence the perception and handling of different working conditions. Nevertheless, our findings shed light on the particular situation of the railroad workers´population and show how important subjective perceptions are in dealing with shift work. The importance of sleep education and thematically relevant training becomes clear in order to prevent serious consequences on sleep and overall health.

Abstract:Abstract The present study contributes to previous research by assessing the validity of the causal structure of the Effort-Reward Imbalance model in relation to the psychosocial mechanisms involved in sickness absenteeism. To this end, data from the German Cohort Study on Work, Age, Health and Work Participation are analysed (lidA Study, n = 6,270). The main hypotheses concerning short- and long-term sick-leave rates are investigated with six hurdle regression models. The results suggest that a high effort-reward imbalance, and high efforts and low rewards at work are associated with an increasing likelihood of sick leave. However, the combination of high effort-reward imbalance and high overcommitment was associated with lower sick-leave rates, in contradiction to the hypothesis postulating cumulative adverse effects of increased effort-reward imbalance and high overcommitment on health-related outcomes. Long-term sick-leave rates among workers of higher occupational and educational status were substantially lower in comparison to those among workers of lower status categories. Even though most hypotheses of the Effort-Reward Imbalance model are suitable for explaining the patterns of absenteeism in this sample, the results point to more complex motivational processes and socioeconomic characteristics of employees moderating and mediating the associations between perceived efforts and rewards at work and absenteeism.
Effects of a flexible work-time design on employee- and company-related aims

Abstract:This article addresses the effects of flexible work-time designs on employee- and company-related aims. Using objective and self-reported quantitative and qualitative data the current study examines the effects of a flexible work-time design that was introduced in a service company in Germany. Building on the learning hypothesis of the job demands – control model, we predicted that a highly flexible work-time design that provides employees with high demands but at the same time also with a high degree of autonomy, and self-determination over their working time leads to positive effects on employee's personal development and learning opportunities. The results supported this hypothesis. However, in addition to employee-related benefits the results also suggested benefits for the company, such as an increase in adherence to company goals. Moreover, the objective data showed a lower degree of absenteeism and higher work quality compared to the control group working with the traditional work-time design. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Presenteeism is problematic since it relates to lower health and productivity. Prior research examined many work and attitudinal variables relating to presenteeism at the individual level. Here, we conceptualize presenteeism as multilevel phenomenon also shaped by the overall attendance behavior (absenteeism and presenteeism) at the work unit. We surveyed employees at a manufacturing plant on presenteeism, health-related lost productive time (HLPT) and absenteeism ( N = 911, 22 units) and collected preceding (past 12–7 and 6 months) objective absence data aggregating it at unit level. Considering the individual-level antecedents only higher physical demands predicted higher absence duration. Presenteeism related positively to physical demands, a burdensome social environment, and organizational identification and negatively to ease of replacement, and core self-evaluations. These relationships were similar for HLPT as outcome. Regarding unit-level factors, preceding unit-level absence frequency (but not duration) negatively related to presenteeism. The negative relationship between core self-evaluations and individual presenteeism decreased under a stronger presenteeism context supporting the hypothesized cross-level effect of unit-level presenteeism context strength. Moreover, individual and unit-level presenteeism correlated, as expected, more strongly with health complaints than absenteeism. Our study demonstrates the value of a contextual, multilevel approach for understanding antecedents and consequences of attendance behavior.

Abstract:Objectives . Associations between shift-work, musculoskeletal symptoms and absenteeism are poorly investigated in the manufacturing industry. This study aimed to investigate associations between working schedule, musculoskeletal symptoms and days of absenteeism among pulp and paper industry workers. Methods . Musculoskeletal symptoms of 904 workers were assessed through the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. χ 2 tests assessed associations between being a day-worker or shift-worker, the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms and days of absenteeism. Results . A significant association was found between working schedule and symptoms in the lower back in the last 12 months, with shift-workers presenting higher prevalence than day-workers ( p = 0.022). Significant associations were also found between days of absenteeism and symptoms in the shoulders ( p = 0.002), which mostly led to absenteeism of 100–365 days; elbows ( p < 0.001), wrists/hands ( p = 0.045) and ankles/feet ( p = 0.042), which produced absenteeism mostly of 25–99 days; and dorsal region ( p = 0.001), which mainly led to absenteeism of 10–24 days. No associations were found between working schedule and days of absenteeism ( p = 0.265). Conclusion . Shift-work is associated with increased prevalence of lower back symptoms, but seems not to influence days of absenteeism. Shoulders seem to be the region leading to higher days of absenteeism, followed by elbows, wrists/hands, ankles/feet and the dorsal region.

Integrating truck and workforce scheduling in a cross-dock: analysis of different workforce coordination policies

Abstract:Cross-docking is a logistics concept that aims at the realization of a fast turnover of goods at minimum stock levels. To achieve these goals, the shipments at the terminal must be synchronized, i.e., the sequence in which the trucks are processed at the dock doors needs to be determined. The resulting truck schedules influence the internal cross-docking processes. Since cross-docking operations are labor intensive and personnel costs are high, efficient truck and workforce schedules help to reduce costs. We propose an optimization model, which integrates the planning tasks of truck and workforce scheduling in a cross-dock for a single working day. More precisely, based on the demand derived from the trucks' schedules, the model allocates the workers to specific shifts and tasks. We assume that the workforce consists of permanent and temporary workers. Due to the short planning horizon, the number of permanent workers is fixed, while temporary workers can be requested daily from an external personnel service provider. Thus, the model's goal is the minimization of the costs for engaging temporary workers. We extend prior works by explicitly integrating daily working hour regulations and different workforce coordination policies. To evaluate these policies we generate test instances and solve them using a standard solver. Despite the test cases' limited size, we are able to gain managerial insights concerning the applicability of the policies under different organizational circumstances. We show that particularly in systems with peak demands and in the case of stackable pallets, more inflexible polices become advisable.
Influence of extended working hours and physical recovery on absenteeism in the footwear industry from a system dynamics model

Abstract:Objectives. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are recurrent in the footwear industry, resulting in absenteeism. This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the influence of overtime work and physical recovery time on the occurrence of WMSD-related absenteeism using a system dynamics model. As ergonomic methods have limitations in quantitatively simulating the behavior of these relationships, the integration of computational modeling techniques has emerged as a methodological alternative to bridge this gap. Methods. An ergonomic work analysis (EWA) was developed in a production cell of a large company. A model of causal relationships (causal loop diagram) and a simulation model (flow and stock diagram) were then developed, where three scenarios for overtime and physical recovery time were analyzed. Results. Working an additional hour resulted in a 42% increase in physical overload, leading to 7.62 leave requests per year and 78.7 days of employee absenteeism. Increasing the physical recovery time by 15 min reduced the overload to 36.5%, resulting in 6.8 leave requests per year and 71.1 days of employee absenteeism. Conclusions. Properly managing excess workload and providing adequate physical recovery for professionals is necessary to mitigate the productivity impacts of absenteeism in the footwear industry.
The effects of flexible work practices on employee attitudes: evidence from a large-scale panel study in Germany

Abstract:<p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:oasis="http://docs.oasis-open.org/ns/oasis-exchange/table">We explore the effects of flexible work practices (FWPs) on the work attitudes (job satisfaction and turnover intention) and non-work attitudes (leisure satisfaction and perceived health) of employees based on representative large-scale German panel data. Because unobserved individual characteristics can easily act as confounders, we estimate both pooled ordinary least squares models and individual fixed-effects models. Controlling for time-constant individual heterogeneity, we find that the three considered FWPs – flexitime, sabbaticals, and working from home – significantly increase job satisfaction and that sabbaticals and working from home (but not flexitime) significantly decrease turnover intention. In addition, sabbaticals but not flexitime or working from home significantly increase leisure satisfaction. The effects of FWPs on health are mostly weak and statistically insignificant. Models that do not control for such individual heterogeneity either underestimate the positive effects of FWPs or find detrimental effects. Our findings indicate that organizations in Germany can increase job satisfaction and decrease employee turnover intention by offering FWPs.</p>
Recover Overnight? Work Interruption and Worker Productivity

Abstract:This paper investigates the effect of work interruption on workers’ subsequent productivity. We employ a data set of individual productivity and machine conditions, in which each worker faces the chance, on a daily basis, that her machine will break down randomly. Our analysis finds that compared to a workday with smooth production, experiencing a machine breakdown is associated with a 3.3 percentage point decline in the worker’s productivity the following day. We discuss possible explanations for the observed effect, including negative emotions, increased cautiousness in operating the machine, and proficiency loss. Our findings shed light on the importance of understanding and managing interruptions in the workplace, and contribute to a growing literature on the determinants of productivity at the micro level. Abstract:We use a time-based system to help organize, summarize, and analyze research on employee absenteeism published in the last 20 years (1977-1996). Although what is known about some mid-term (4-12 month) origins of absence-taking has been greatly clarified and expanded, less is known about long-term (> 12 months) and short-term (I day-3 months) origins, or about how causes in different time frames relate to each other. Poor performance and “neglectful” behaviors serve as reliable offshoots of absenteeism. The long- and short-term etiology of the latter behaviors is unclear, but their shared variance in the mid-term reflects negative job attitudes. Outcomes of absenteeism have received much less research attention. Although mid-term consequences such as reduced performance, turnover, and organizational expense are well-established, little is known about short- and long-term effects of absence-taking on individuals and their social environments. We conclude with suggestions for more explicit consideration of time frames, causal lags, and aggregation periods in the next decades of absenteeism research.

Modeling departure time choice for non-workers: A random coefficients hazard model

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the factors affecting home-based departure time choice for non-workers and improve the techniques of analysis of departure time decisions by using a random coefficients hazard model to account for unobserved heterogeneity across decision makers. The unknown underlying distribution of unobserved heterogeneity is approximated by a nonparametric and a parametric approach separately. Our empirical results indicate that there are significant effects of unobserved heterogeneity on departure time choice of non-workers and that ignoring its effects results in a substantial bias in the parameter estimates. The empirical results also provide insights into the determinants of departure time choice in the context of activity scheduling.

Abstract:This paper designed an experiment to explore the effects of staggered work hours on the departure time choice behavior of commuters based on a discrete Vickrey’s bottleneck model. The experiment included a benchmark scenario with one work start time and a treatment scenario with two work start times. In the treatment scenario, subjects were classified into two groups with different work start times, and such two groups had interactions because of the small gap between the two work start times. Our experimental results indicated that (i) subjects’ choice behavior deviated from the pure-strategy equilibrium in both scenarios, (ii) subjects’ average travel cost in the benchmark scenario was higher than that of the pure-strategy equilibrium, and (iii) in the treatment scenario, the average travel cost in the group with earlier work start time did not significantly differ from the pure-strategy equilibrium, whereas subjects in the group with later work start time had lower average travel cost than the pure-strategy equilibrium. Finally, we proposed a reinforcement learning model to simulate the departure time choice behavior of the commuters. The simulation results were consistent with the collective behavior of the experimental observations. Our work is expected to shed light on the theoretical study on the departure time choice behavior concerning staggered work hours.

Abstract:Most studies on the indirect costs of an illness and the cost effectiveness of a medical intervention or employer-sponsored wellness program assume that the value of reducing the number of days employees miss from work due to illness is the wage rate. This paper presents a general model to examine the magnitude and incidence of costs associated with absenteeism under alternative assumptions regarding the size of the firm, the production function, the nature of the firm's product, and the competitiveness of the labor market. We conclude that the cost of lost work time can be substantially higher than the wage when perfect substitutes are not available to replace absent workers and there is team production or a penalty associated with not meeting an output target. In the long run, workers are likely to bear much of the incidence of the costs associated with absenteeism, and therefore be the likely beneficiaries of any reduction in absenteeism.

Abstract:Shift work, particularly in the auto industry, presents significant health challenges, notably in how it impacts cardiovascular health due to irregular work schedules and associated sleep disruptions. This prospective study evaluated 4683 workers from a single Romanian automotive enterprise to investigate the relationship between fixed shift work schedules and cardiovascular health outcomes. Our analysis focused on fixed-shift workers, excluding those on rotating shifts to reduce variability and enhance the clarity of the findings. The findings reveal that night shift workers are at a heightened risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) compared to their day shift counterparts. Night shift workers demonstrated a higher CVD incidence (4.3%) compared to day shift workers (2.6%), with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.68 (95% CI: 1.08 to 2.62, p = 0.021). This association remained significant after adjusting for potential confounders, with an adjusted OR of 1.74 (95% CI: 1.09 to 2.75, p = 0.019). Male night shift workers exhibited a significantly higher CVD incidence (4.5%) compared to male day shift workers (3.0%), with an OR of 1.75 (95% CI: 1.07 to 2.89, p = 0.026). Female night shift workers also showed a higher CVD incidence (3.4%) compared to female day shift workers (1.3%), although this was not statistically significant. These findings underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions and effective strategies to mitigate these risks and promote the cardiovascular health and overall well-being of shift workers in the auto industry. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how non-traditional work schedules affect health and provides a basis for implementing protective measures in occupational settings.

Abstract:The complex interplay between temporal factors and employee well-being is a pressing concern in the modern workplace, particularly among industrial shift-workers. Shift work has far-reaching consequences, affecting not only productivity but also psychosomatic health, quality of life, and overall wellness. This study aimed to investigate the impact of shift time pattern on psychosomatic health as well as the sleep quality of industrial workers by established subjective assessment tools with a comprehensive statistical analysis. We conducted a comprehensive study of 5432 Indian industrial workers (iron & steel industries), categorizing them into two groups: regular workers (Test Group-I, 52.1%) and rotational shift-workers (Test Group-II, 47.9%). Participants worked an average of 55.6 and 58.9 h/week, respectively. We assessed psychosomatic health using standardized instruments, including the Fatigue Assessment Scale, Physical Health Questionnaire, and Sleep Disorder Questionnaire. The analysis revealed a significant increase in fatigue symptoms, with 46.3% of TG-I and 46.8% of TG-II workers at elevated risk ( p < 0.01). Similarly, 54.6% of TG-I and 59.9% of TG-II workers exhibited high-risk somatic symptom severity ( p < 0.001), and 29.1% of TG-I and 48.5% of TG-II workers were at elevated risk of sleep disorders ( p < 0.001). These findings starkly contrast with those of the general population. The study highlights the profound physiological and psychological toll of shift work on industrial workers, who often struggle to align their circadian rhythms, manage somatic symptoms, and sleep disorders, leading to elevated fatigue levels. These challenges contribute to mood disturbances, stress, and social isolation, underscoring the urgent need for targeted interventions to mitigate the adverse effects of shift work.

Abstract:This paper presents a causal model of employee absenteeism which modifies and extends the Steers and Rhodes (1978) process model of employee attendance. A summary and critique of the Steers and Rhodes model is offered. The proposed model integrates diverse literatures regarding organization behavior and occupational health. Sources are provided for the acceptable operationalization of variables.

Abstract:Abstract We study relational contracts among managers using unique data that tracks transfers of workers across teams in Indian ready-made garment factories. We focus on how relational contracts help managers cope with worker absenteeism shocks, which are frequent, often large, weakly correlated across teams, and which substantially reduce team productivity. Together these facts imply gains from sharing workers. We show that managers respond to shocks by lending and borrowing workers in a manner consistent with relational contracting, but many potentially beneficial transfers are unrealized. This is because managers’ primary relationships are with a very small subset of potential partners. A borrowing event study around main trading partners’ separations from the firm reinforces the importance of relationships. We show robustness to excluding worker moves least likely to reflect relational borrowing responses to idiosyncratic absenteeism shocks. Counterfactual simulations reveal large gains to reducing costs associated with forming and maintaining additional relationships among managers.
