Abstract:A combination of structural distortions, Coulomb interaction, and strong spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in a material, leads to improved and exceptional physical characteristics such as large magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE), unusual magnetic behavior, and high Curie temperature ( T C ), which has definite potential applications in spintronics. Here, the electronic and magnetic properties of the rare earth elements ( R E = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd) doped Ca 2 FeOsO 6 double perovskite oxides are explored using ab-initio calculations. The undoped system is a ferrimagnetic (FiM) Mott-insulator with an energy band gap of 0.914 eV, where computed partial spin magnetic moments of + 4.12/ − 1 . 58 μ B on Fe/Os ions and further confirms the FiM ordering of the system. Moreover, the pristine structure demonstrates a large MAE constant of 2.95 × 1 0 7 erg/cm 3 having ac-plane ([101]) as an easy magnetic axis. Along with this, a high T C of 334 K employing the Heisenberg model is found, which is almost in line with the experimentally recognized value of 320 K. By changing the RE cation at the Ca-site, the consequence of steric impacts on the structure stability, electronic structure, MAE, and T C has been analyzed. The negative values of enthalpy of formation, ensure the thermodynamic stability of the doped structures, while the calculated elastic parameters and phonon spectrums confirm their mechanical and dynamical stability, respectively. Strikingly, an insulator to n- and p-type metal transition is obtained for Ce- and Pm-doped DPOs, respectively, where Os 5d states are playing the major role in each case. Furthermore, it is found that RE-doping enhanced the structural distortions due to large ionic radii as compared to host ion (Ca), which has positive influences on the MAE and T C amplitude.
