Abstract:In a series of papers, Ole Peters and his collaborators claim that the 'conceptual basis of mainstream economic theory' is 'flawed' and that the approach they call 'ergodicity economics' gives 'reason to hope for a future economic science that is more parsimonious, conceptually clearer and less subjective' (Peters, 2019). This paper argues that 'ergodicity economics' is pseudoscience because it has not produced falsifiable implications and should be taken with skepticism.

Abstract:A growing body of empirical evidence suggests that the dynamics of wealth within a population tends to be nonergodic, even after rescaling the individual wealth with the population average. Despite these discoveries, the way in which nonergodicity manifests itself in models of economic interactions remains an open issue. Here we shed valuable insight on these properties by studying the nonergodicity of the population average wealth in a simple model for wealth dynamics in a growing and reallocating economy called reallocating geometric Brownian motion (RGBM). When the effective wealth reallocation in the economy is from the poor to the rich, the model allows for the existence of negative wealth within the population. In this work, we show that in the negative reallocation regime of RGBM, ergodicity breaks as the difference between the time-average and the ensemble growth rate of the average wealth in the population. In particular, the ensemble average wealth grows exponentially, whereas the time-average growth rate is nonexistent. Moreover, we find that the system is characterized with a critical self-averaging time period. Before this time period, the ensemble average is a fair approximation for the population average wealth. Afterwards, the nonergodicity forces the population average to oscillate between positive and negative values since the magnitude of this observable is determined by the most extreme wealth values in the population. This implies that the dynamics of the population average is an unstable phenomenon in a nonergodic economy. The Ergodic Hypothesis: A Typicality Statement

Abstract:This paper analyzes the ergodic hypothesis in the context of Boltzmann's late work in statistical mechanics, where Boltzmann lays the foundations for what is today known as the typicality account. I argue that, based on the concepts of stationarity (of the measure) and typicality (of the equilibrium state), the ergodic hypothesis, as an idealization, is a consequence rather than an assumption of Boltzmann's approach. More precisely, it can be shown that every system with a stationary measure and an equilibrium state (be it a state of overwhelming phase space or time average) behaves essentially as if it were ergodic. I claim that Boltzmann was aware of this fact as it grounds both his notion of equilibrium, relating it to the thermodynamic notion of equilibrium, and his estimate of the fluctuation rates.

Abstract:In this paper, we study two standard (Keynesian) dynamic macroeconomic models (one is piecewise linear and the other is nonlinear). Our purpose is twofold: (1)~For each model, we give a complete characterisation for the existence of a topological chaos (of the GDP levels), (2)~Even if a chaos exists, using ergodic theory, we show that it is possible to predict the future GDP levels "on average". This paper gives a new application of a celebrated result in ergodic theory by A. Avila (2014 fields medalist). We believe that our method/strategy in this paper is generic enough to be used to analyse many other (seemingly untractable) chaotic economic models.

Abstract:Ergodicity describes an equivalence between the expectation value and the time average of observables. Applied to human behaviour, ergodic theories of decision-making reveal how individuals should tolerate risk in different environments. To optimize wealth over time, agents should adapt their utility function according to the dynamical setting they face. Linear utility is optimal for additive dynamics, whereas logarithmic utility is optimal for multiplicative dynamics. Whether humans approximate time optimal behavior across different dynamics is unknown. Here we compare the effects of additive versus multiplicative gamble dynamics on risky choice. We show that utility functions are modulated by gamble dynamics in ways not explained by prevailing decision theories. Instead, as predicted by time optimality, risk aversion increases under multiplicative dynamics, distributing close to the values that maximize the time average growth of in-game wealth. We suggest that our findings motivate a need for explicitly grounding theories of decision-making on ergodic considerations.

Abstract:The accurate characterization of dynamics in an experimental time series is fundamental for understanding the observed behavior of any natural or arti cial system. While numerous methods are available for this task [1], their accuracy more or less depends on the availability of long data sets. This requirement often hinders productive research from experimental data, especially in elds where acquisition of long data sets is impossible due to intrinsic system properties or lack of non-invasive recording techniques that destroy the system's dynamics. Such instances are frequent in biology, especially at the cellular level [2], and can also be encountered in economics [3], astronomy [4], as well as man-made systems in general. Here we propose a new approach for analyzing short time series based on ergodicity of deterministic chaotic systems [5]. A hypothesis on ergodicity and the signal-to-noise paradox

Abstract:This letter raises the possibility that ergodicity concerns might have some bearing on the signal-to-noise paradox. This is explored by applying the ergodic theorem to the theory behind ensemble weather forecasting and the ensemble mean. Using the ensemble mean as our best forecast of observations amounts to interpreting it as the most likely phase-space trajectory, which relies on the ergodic theorem. This can fail for ensemble forecasting systems if members are not perfectly exchangeable with each other, the averaging window is too short and/or there are too few members. We argue these failures can occur in cases such as the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) forecasts due to intransitivity or regime behaviour for regions such as the North Atlantic and Arctic. This behaviour, where different ensemble members may become stuck in different relatively persistent flow states (intransitivity) or multi-modality (regime behaviour), can in certain situations break the ergodic theorem. The problem of non-ergodic systems and models in the case of weather forecasting is discussed, as are potential mitigation methods and metrics for ergodicity in ensemble systems.

Abstract:Ergodicity economics is a new branch of economic theory that notes the conceptual difference between time averages and expectation values, which coincide only for ergodic observables. It postulates that individual agents maximise the time average growth rate of wealth, known widely as growth optimality. This contrasts with the dominant behavioural model in economics, expected utility theory, in which agents maximise expectation values of changes in psychologically transformed wealth. Historically, growth optimality was explored for additive and multiplicative gambles. Here we apply it to a general class of wealth dynamics, extending the range of economic situations where it may be used. Moreover, we show a correspondence between growth optimality and expected utility theory, in which the ergodicity transformation in the former is identified as the utility function in the latter. This correspondence offers a theoretical basis for choosing utility functions and predicts that wealth dynamics are strong determinants of risk preferences.

Odd period cycles and ergodic properties in price dynamics for an exchange economy

Abstract:In the first part of this paper (Sections 1-4), we study a standard exchange economy model with Cobb-Douglas type consumers and give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an odd period cycle in the Walras-Samuelson (tatonnement) price adjustment process. We also give a sufficient condition for a price to be eventually attracted to a chaotic region. In the second part (Sections 5 and 6), we investigate ergodic properties of the price dynamics showing that the existence of chaos is not necessarily bad. (The future is still predictable on average.) Moreover, supported by a celebrated work of Avila et al. (Invent. Math., 2003), we conduct a sensitivity analysis to investigate a relationship between the ergodic sum (of prices) and the speed of price adjustment. We believe that our methods in this paper can be used to analyse many other chaotic economic models.

Abstract:AbstractThis is an invited article for the Discussion and Debate special issue of The European Physical Journal Special Topics on the subject “Can Economics be a Physical Science?” The first part of the paper traces the personal path of the author from theoretical physics to economics. It briefly summarizes applications of statistical physics to monetary transactions in an ensemble of economic agents. It shows how a highly unequal probability distribution of money emerges due to irreversible increase of entropy in the system. The second part examines deep conceptual and controversial issues and fallacies in monetary economics from econophysics perspective. These issues include the nature of money, conservation (or not) of money, distinctions between money vs. wealth and money vs. debt, creation of money by the state and debt by the banks, the origins of monetary crises and capitalist profit. Presentation uses plain language understandable to laypeople and may be of interest to both specialists and general public.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the time average behavior of Markov chains with transition probabilities being kernels of completely continuous operators, and therefore to provide a sufficient condition for a class of Markov chains that are frequently used in dynamic economic models to be ergodic. The paper reviews the time average convergence of the quasi-weakly complete continuity Markov operators to a unique projection operator. Also, it shows that a further assumption of quasi-strongly complete continuity reduces the dependence of the unique invariant measure on its corresponding initial distribution through ergodic decomposition, and therefore guarantees the Markov chain to be ergodic up to multiplication of constant coefficients. Moreover, a sufficient and practical condition is provided for the ergodicity in economic state Markov chains that are induced by exogenous random shocks and a correspondence between the exogenous space and the state space.

Abstract:We suggest employing log-ergodic processes to simulate the velocity of money in an ergodic manner. Our approach sheds light on economic behavior, policy implications, and financial dynamics by maintaining long-term stability. By bridging theory and practice, the partially ergodic model helps analysts and policymakers comprehend and forecast velocity of money. The empirical analysis, using historical U.S. GDP and money supply data, demonstrates the model's effectiveness in capturing the long-term stability of the velocity of money. Key findings indicate that the log-ergodic model offers superior predictive power compared to traditional models, making it a valuable tool for policymakers to control economic factors in vital situations.

Abstract:Experimental econophysics is concerned with statistical physics of humans in the laboratory, and it is based on controlled human experiments developed by physicists to study some problems related to economics or finance. It relies on controlled human experiments in the laboratory together with agent-based modeling (for computer simulations and/or analytical theory), with an attempt to reveal the general cause–effect relationship between specific conditions and emergent properties of real economic/financial markets (a kind of complex adaptive systems). Here I review the latest progress in the field, namely, stylized facts, herd behavior, contrarian behavior, spontaneous cooperation, partial information, and risk management. Also, I highlight the connections between such progress and other topics of traditional statistical physics. The main theme of the review is to show diverse emergent properties of the laboratory markets, originating from self-organization due to the nonlinear interactions among heterogeneous humans or agents (complexity).

Abstract:Eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) represents a breakthrough in many-body physics since it allows to link thermalization of physical observables with the applicability of random matrix theory (RMT). Recent years were also extremely fruitful in exploring possible counterexamples to thermalization, ranging, among others, from integrability, single-particle chaos, many-body localization, many-body scars, to Hilbert-space fragmentation. In all these cases the conventional ETH is violated. However, it remains elusive how the conventional ETH breaks down when one approaches the boundaries of ergodicity, and whether the range of validity of the conventional ETH coincides with the validity of RMT-like spectral statistics. Here we bridge this gap and we introduce a scenario of the ETH breakdown in many-body quantum systems, dubbed fading ergodicity regime, which establishes a link between the conventional ETH and non-ergodic behavior. We conjecture this scenario to be relevant for the description of finite many-body systems at the boundaries of ergodicity, and we provide numerical and analytical arguments for its validity in the quantum sun model of ergodicity breaking phase transition. For the latter, we provide evidence that the breakdown of the conventional ETH is not associated with the breakdown of the RMT-like spectral statistics.

Abstract:Why do gases reach equilibrium when left to themselves? The canonical answer, originally proffered by Boltzmann, is that the systems have to be ergodic. This answer is now widely regarded as flawed. We argue that some of the main objections, in particular, arguments based on the KAM-theorem and the Markus-Meyer theorem, are beside the point. We then argue that something close to Boltzmann's proposal is true: gases behave thermodynamic-like if they are epsilon-ergodic, i.e., ergodic on the phase space except for a small region of measure epsilon. This answer is promising because there is evidence that relevant systems are epsilon-ergodic.

Abstract:The common feature of non‐ergodic systems is an internal timescale that greatly exceeds the external observational timescale tobs . This kinetic state of broken ergodicity occurs in many systems, with profound thermodynamic implications. In this work, we present a review of non‐ergodic physical systems focused on the common origins of non‐ergodic behavior across diverse material systems. We begin with a theoretical discussion of energy landscapes and two treatments of thermodynamics in broken ergodic systems. We then discuss several characteristic material classes that exhibit non‐ergodic behavior, describing the process of ergodic breakdown and its signatures for each. The disordered nature and frustration of different energetic interactions in the example systems are discussed as the possible origin of non‐ergodic dynamics. We conclude with several considerations that can assist in the identification of non‐ergodic behavior. This review intends to unify the behavior of a diverse group of physical systems with a common description to aid future discussions between these fields of study.

Abstract:Ergodic theory provides a rigorous mathematical description of chaos in classical dynamical systems, including a formal definition of the ergodic hierarchy. How ergodic dynamics is reflected in the energy levels and eigenstates of a quantum system is the central question of quantum chaos, but a rigorous quantum notion of ergodicity remains elusive. Closely related to the classical ergodic hierarchy is a less-known notion of cyclic approximate periodic transformations [see, e.g., I. Cornfield, S. Fomin, and Y. Sinai, Ergodic Theory (Springer-Verlag New York, 1982)], which maps any "ergodic" dynamical system to a cyclic permutation on a circle and arguably represents the most elementary form of ergodicity. This paper shows that cyclic ergodicity generalizes to quantum dynamical systems, and provides a rigorous observable-independent definition of quantum ergodicity. It implies the ability to construct an orthonormal basis, where quantum dynamics transports any initial basis vector to have a sufficiently large overlap with each of the other basis vectors in a cyclic sequence. It is proven that the basis, maximizing the overlap over all such quantum cyclic permutations, is obtained via the discrete Fourier transform of the energy eigenstates. This relates quantum cyclic ergodicity to energy level statistics. The level statistics of Wigner-Dyson random matrices, usually associated with quantum chaos on empirical grounds, is derived as a special case of this general relation. To demonstrate generality, we prove that irrational flows on a 2D torus are classical and quantum cyclic ergodic, with spectral rigidity distinct from Wigner-Dyson. Finally, we motivate a quantum ergodic hierarchy of operators and discuss connections to eigenstate thermalization. This work provides a general framework for transplanting some rigorous concepts of ergodic theory to quantum dynamical systems.

Abstract:For this special issue, the article aims at discussing a few econophysics problems studied so far rather successfully. The following "applications" in micro-econo-physics are considered : (i) financial crashes; it is emphasized that one can distinguish between endogenous and exogenous causes; (ii) portofolio control, selection and inherent risk measure; (iii) foreign currency exchanges, also distinguishing endogenous and exogenous money control; (iv) price and asset evolution values. It is shown that some macro-econo-physics problem have been also tackled, like geographic/political constraints, the globalization of the economy and country clustering. Moreover, it is daring to suggest prospect for studies and researches, whence presenting some selection of a few interesting perspectives.

Abstract:The stochastic processes underlying the growth and stability of biological and psychological systems reveal themselves when far from equilibrium. Far from equilibrium, nonergodicity reigns. Nonergodicity implies that the average outcome for a group/ensemble (i.e., of representative organisms/minds) is not necessarily a reliable estimate of the average outcome for an individual over time. However, the scientific interest in causal inference suggests that we somehow aim at stable estimates of the cause that will generalize to new individuals in the long run. Therefore, the valid analysis must extract an ergodic stationary measure from fluctuating physiological data. So the challenge is to extract statistical estimates that may describe or quantify some of this nonergodicity (i.e., of the raw measured data) without themselves (i.e., the estimates) being nonergodic. We show that traditional linear statistics such as the standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV), and root mean square (RMS) can show nonstationarity, violating the ergodic assumption. Time series of statistics addressing sequential structure and its potential nonlinearity: fractality and multifractality, change in a time-independent way and fulfill the ergodic assumption. Complementing traditional linear indices with fractal and multifractal indices would empower the study of stochastic far-from-equilibrium biological and psychological dynamics.
