Abstract:This paper analyzes the ergodic hypothesis in the context of Boltzmann's late work in statistical mechanics, where Boltzmann lays the foundations for what is today known as the typicality account. I argue that, based on the concepts of stationarity (of the measure) and typicality (of the equilibrium state), the ergodic hypothesis, as an idealization, is a consequence rather than an assumption of Boltzmann's approach. More precisely, it can be shown that every system with a stationary measure and an equilibrium state (be it a state of overwhelming phase space or time average) behaves essentially as if it were ergodic. I claim that Boltzmann was aware of this fact as it grounds both his notion of equilibrium, relating it to the thermodynamic notion of equilibrium, and his estimate of the fluctuation rates.

Abstract:We present a spectral-theoretic approach to time-average statistical mechanics for general, non-equilibrium initial conditions. We consider the statistics of bounded, local additive functionals of reversible as well as irreversible ergodic stochastic dynamics with continuous or discrete state-space. We derive exact results for the mean, fluctuations and correlations of time average observables from the eigenspectrum of the underlying generator of Fokker-Planck or master equation dynamics, and discuss the results from a physical perspective. Feynman-Kac formulas are re-derived using Itô calculus and combined with non-Hermitian perturbation theory. The emergence of the universal central limit law in a spectral representation is shown explicitly on large deviation time-scales. For reversible dynamics with equilibrated initial conditions we derive a general upper bound to fluctuations of occupation measures in terms of an integral of the return probability. Simple, exactly solvable examples are analyzed to demonstrate how to apply the theory. As a biophysical example we revisit the Berg-Purcell problem on the precision of concentration measurements by a single receptor. Our results are directly applicable to a diverse range of phenomena underpinned by time-average observables and additive functionals in physical, chemical, biological, and economical systems.

Explaining Thermodynamic-Like Behaviour In Terms of Epsilon-Ergodicity

Abstract:Why do gases reach equilibrium when left to themselves? The canonical answer, originally proffered by Boltzmann, is that the systems have to be ergodic. This answer is now widely regarded as flawed. We argue that some of the main objections, in particular, arguments based on the KAM-theorem and the Markus-Meyer theorem, are beside the point. We then argue that something close to Boltzmann's proposal is true: gases behave thermodynamic-like if they are epsilon-ergodic, i.e., ergodic on the phase space except for a small region of measure epsilon. This answer is promising because there is evidence that relevant systems are epsilon-ergodic.

Ergodic observables in non-ergodic systems: the example of the harmonic chain

Abstract:In the framework of statistical mechanics the properties of macroscopic systems are deduced starting from the laws of their microscopic dynamics. One of the key assumptions in this procedure is the ergodic property, namely the equivalence between time averages and ensemble averages. This property can be proved only for a limited number of systems; however, as proved by Khinchin [1], weak forms of it hold even in systems that are not ergodic at the microscopic scale, provided that extensive observables are considered. Here we show in a pedagogical way the validity of the ergodic hypothesis, at a practical level, in the paradigmatic case of a chain of harmonic oscillators. By using analytical results and numerical computations, we provide evidence that this non-chaotic integrable system shows ergodic behavior in the limit of many degrees of freedom. In particular, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution turns out to fairly describe the statistics of the single particle velocity. A study of the typical time-scales for relaxation is also provided.

Abstract:Boltzmann's ergodic hypothesis furnishes a possible explanation for the emergence of statistical mechanics in the framework of classical physics. In quantum mechanics, the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) is instead generally considered as a possible route to thermalization. This is because the notion of ergodicity itself is vague in the quantum world and it is often simply taken as a synonym for thermalization. Here we show, in an elementary way, that when quantum ergodicity is properly defined, it is, in fact, equivalent to ETH. In turn, ergodicity is equivalent to thermalization, thus implying the equivalence of thermalization and ETH. This result previously appeared in [De Palma et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 220401 (2015)], but becomes particularly clear in the present context. We also show that it is possible to define a classical analogue of ETH which is implicitly assumed to be satisfied when constructing classical statistical mechanics. Classical and quantum statistical mechanics are built according to the familiar standard prescription. This prescription, however, is ontologically justified only in the quantum world.

Abstract:Ergodic theory provides a rigorous mathematical description of chaos in classical dynamical systems, including a formal definition of the ergodic hierarchy. How ergodic dynamics is reflected in the energy levels and eigenstates of a quantum system is the central question of quantum chaos, but a rigorous quantum notion of ergodicity remains elusive. Closely related to the classical ergodic hierarchy is a less-known notion of cyclic approximate periodic transformations [see, e.g., I. Cornfield, S. Fomin, and Y. Sinai, Ergodic Theory (Springer-Verlag New York, 1982)], which maps any "ergodic" dynamical system to a cyclic permutation on a circle and arguably represents the most elementary form of ergodicity. This paper shows that cyclic ergodicity generalizes to quantum dynamical systems, and provides a rigorous observable-independent definition of quantum ergodicity. It implies the ability to construct an orthonormal basis, where quantum dynamics transports any initial basis vector to have a sufficiently large overlap with each of the other basis vectors in a cyclic sequence. It is proven that the basis, maximizing the overlap over all such quantum cyclic permutations, is obtained via the discrete Fourier transform of the energy eigenstates. This relates quantum cyclic ergodicity to energy level statistics. The level statistics of Wigner-Dyson random matrices, usually associated with quantum chaos on empirical grounds, is derived as a special case of this general relation. To demonstrate generality, we prove that irrational flows on a 2D torus are classical and quantum cyclic ergodic, with spectral rigidity distinct from Wigner-Dyson. Finally, we motivate a quantum ergodic hierarchy of operators and discuss connections to eigenstate thermalization. This work provides a general framework for transplanting some rigorous concepts of ergodic theory to quantum dynamical systems.

Abstract:In this paper we study the ergodic theory of a class of symbolic dynamical systems $(\O, T, \mu)$ where $T:{\O}\to \O$ the left shift transformation on $\O=\prod_0^\infty\{0,1\}$ and $\mu$ is a $\s$-finite $T$-invariant measure having the property that one can find a real number $d$ so that $\mu(\tau^d)=\infty$ but $\mu(\tau^{d-\epsilon})<\infty$ for all $\epsilon >0$, where $\tau$ is the first passage time function in the reference state 1. In particular we shall consider invariant measures $\mu$ arising from a potential $V$ which is uniformly continuous but not of summable variation. If $d>0$ then $\mu$ can be normalized to give the unique non-atomic equilibrium probability measure of $V$ for which we compute the (asymptotically) exact mixing rate, of order $n^{-d}$. We also establish the weak-Bernoulli property and a polynomial cluster property (decay of correlations) for observables of polynomial variation. If instead $d\leq 0$ then $\mu$ is an infinite measure with scaling rate of order $n^d$. Moreover, the analytic properties of the weighted dynamical zeta function and those of the Fourier transform of correlation functions are shown to be related to one another via the spectral properties of an operator-valued power series which naturally arises from a standard inducing procedure. A detailed control of the singular behaviour of these functions in the vicinity of their non-polar singularity at $z=1$ is achieved through an approximation scheme which uses generating functions of a suitable renewal process. In the perspective of differentiable dynamics, these are statements about the unique absolutely continuous invariant measure of a class of piecewise smooth interval maps with an indifferent fixed point.
Anomalous thermalization in ergodic systems

Abstract:It is commonly believed that quantum isolated systems satisfying the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) are diffusive. We show that this assumption is too restrictive, since there are systems that are asymptotically in a thermal state, yet exhibit anomalous, subdiffusive thermalization. We show that such systems satisfy a modified version of the ETH ansatz and derive a general connection between the scaling of the variance of the offdiagonal matrix elements of local operators, written in the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian, and the dynamical exponent. We find that for subdiffusively thermalizing systems the variance scales more slowly with system size than expected for diffusive systems. We corroborate our findings by numerically studying the distribution of the coefficients of the eigenfunctions and the offdiagonal matrix elements of local operators of the random field Heisenberg chain, which has anomalous transport in its thermal phase. Surprisingly, this system also has non-Gaussian distributions of the eigenfunctions, thus directly violating Berry's conjecture.

Thermodynamics of chaotic relaxation processes

Abstract:The established thermodynamic formalism of chaotic dynamics, valid at statistical equilibrium, is here generalized to systems out of equilibrium, that have yet to relax to a steady state. A relation between information, escape rate, and the phase-space average of an integrated observable (e.g. Lyapunov exponent, diffusion coefficient) is obtained for finite time. Most notably, the thermodynamic treatment may predict the phase-space profile of any finite-time integrated observable from the leading and subleading eigenfunctions of the Perron-Frobenius/Koopman transfer operator. Examples of that equivalence are shown, and the theory is tested analytically on the Bernoulli map, while numerically on the perturbed cat map, the Hénon map, and the Ikeda map, all paradigms of chaos.

Abstract:Eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) represents a breakthrough in many-body physics since it allows to link thermalization of physical observables with the applicability of random matrix theory (RMT). Recent years were also extremely fruitful in exploring possible counterexamples to thermalization, ranging, among others, from integrability, single-particle chaos, many-body localization, many-body scars, to Hilbert-space fragmentation. In all these cases the conventional ETH is violated. However, it remains elusive how the conventional ETH breaks down when one approaches the boundaries of ergodicity, and whether the range of validity of the conventional ETH coincides with the validity of RMT-like spectral statistics. Here we bridge this gap and we introduce a scenario of the ETH breakdown in many-body quantum systems, dubbed fading ergodicity regime, which establishes a link between the conventional ETH and non-ergodic behavior. We conjecture this scenario to be relevant for the description of finite many-body systems at the boundaries of ergodicity, and we provide numerical and analytical arguments for its validity in the quantum sun model of ergodicity breaking phase transition. For the latter, we provide evidence that the breakdown of the conventional ETH is not associated with the breakdown of the RMT-like spectral statistics.

Robust ergodic properties in partially hyperbolic dynamics

Abstract:We study ergodic properties of partially hyperbolic systems whose central direction is mostly contracting. Earlier work of Bonatti, Viana about existence and finitude of physical measures is extended to the case of local diffeomorphisms. Moreover, we prove that such systems constitute a C^2-open set in which statistical stability is a dense property. In contrast, all mostly contracting systems are shown to be stable under small random perturbations.

A Maximum Entropy Principle in Deep Thermalization and in Hilbert-Space Ergodicity

Abstract:We report universal statistical properties displayed by ensembles of pure states that naturally emerge in quantum many-body systems. Specifically, two classes of state ensembles are considered: those formed by i) the temporal trajectory of a quantum state under unitary evolution or ii) the quantum states of small subsystems obtained by partial, local projective measurements performed on their complements. These cases respectively exemplify the phenomena of "Hilbert-space ergodicity" and "deep thermalization." In both cases, the resultant ensembles are defined by a simple principle: the distributions of pure states have maximum entropy, subject to constraints such as energy conservation, and effective constraints imposed by thermalization. We present and numerically verify quantifiable signatures of this principle by deriving explicit formulae for all statistical moments of the ensembles; proving the necessary and sufficient conditions for such universality under widely-accepted assumptions; and describing their measurable consequences in experiments. We further discuss information-theoretic implications of the universality: our ensembles have maximal information content while being maximally difficult to interrogate, establishing that generic quantum state ensembles that occur in nature hide (scramble) information as strongly as possible. Our results generalize the notions of Hilbert-space ergodicity to time-independent Hamiltonian dynamics and deep thermalization from infinite to finite effective temperature. Our work presents new perspectives to characterize and understand universal behaviors of quantum dynamics using statistical and information theoretic tools.

Abstract:Chaotic dynamics is always characterized by swarms of unstable trajectories, unpredictable individually, and thus generally studied statistically. It is often the case that such phase-space densities relax exponentially fast to a limiting distribution, that rules the long-time average of every observable of interest. Before that asymptotic timescale, the statistics of chaos is generally believed to depend on both the initial conditions and the chosen observable. I show that this is not the case for a widely applicable class of models, that feature a phase-space (`field') distribution common to all pushed-forward or integrated observables, while the system is still relaxing towards statistical equilibrium or a steady state. This universal profile is determined by both leading and first subleading eigenfunctions of the transport operator (Koopman or Perron-Frobenius) that maps phase-space densities forward or backward in time.

We find that there is an infinite sequence of eigenstates with the characteristics of quantum many-body scars, that is, exceptional eigenstates with observable expectation values that lie far from thermal values, and we show that these states are one-quasiparticle states. We argue that in the thermodynamic limit the eigenstates cover the entire area between two diverging lines: the line of one-quasiparticle states, whose direction is dictated by relativistic kinematics, and the thermal average line. Almost everywhere ergodicity in quantum lattice models

Abstract:We rigorously examine the ergodic properties of quantum lattice models with short range interactions, in the C* algebra formulation of statistical mechanics. Ergodicity results, in the context of group actions on C* algebras, assume that the algebra is asymptotically abelian, which is not the case for time evolution. The Lieb-Robinson bound tells us that the spatial extent of the time evolution of operators is exponentially small outside a light-cone, defined by the Lieb-Robinson velocity. More precisely, this means that the algebra of observables is asymptotically abelian only in a space-like region. This implies a form of ergodicity outside the light-cone, but what happens within it? We show that the long-time average of connected correlation functions of observables, along space-time rays of almost every speed, vanishes. This holds in any state that is invariant under space-time translations and that satisfies weak clustering properties in space. Further, we show that the long-time limit of the n-th moment, with respect to the state, of a ray-averaged observable converges to the n-th power of its ensemble average, which means that there are no fluctuations of ray averages in the long time limit. This is a statement of ergodicity. The ray averages can also be performed in a way that accounts for oscillations, showing that correlations (and moments) of the ray averaged observables cannot sustainably oscillate in the long time limit. Finally, we show that in the GNS representation of the algebra of observables, for any KMS state with the above properties, the long-time limit of the ray averaged commutator converges (in the strong operator topology (SOT)) to 0 and the ray average of any observable converges (in the SOT) to a multiple of the identity. This indicates that observables get "thinner" almost everywhere within the light-cone.

Average Behaviour in Discrete-Time Imprecise Markov Chains: A Study of Weak Ergodicity

Abstract:We study the limit behaviour of upper and lower bounds on expected time averages in imprecise Markov chains; a generalised type of Markov chain where the local dynamics, traditionally characterised by transition probabilities, are now represented by sets of `plausible' transition probabilities. Our first main result is a necessary and sufficient condition under which these upper and lower bounds, called upper and lower expected time averages, will converge as time progresses towards infinity to limit values that do not depend on the process' initial state. Our condition is considerably weaker than that needed for ergodic behaviour; a similar notion which demands that marginal upper and lower expectations of functions at a single time instant converge to so-called limit-or steady state-upper and lower expectations. For this reason, we refer to our notion as `weak ergodicity'. Our second main result shows that, as far as this weakly ergodic behaviour is concerned, one should not worry about which type of independence assumption to adopt-epistemic irrelevance, complete independence or repetition independence. The characterisation of weak ergodicity as well as the limit values of upper and lower expected time averages do not depend on such a choice. Notably, this type of robustness is not exhibited by the notion of ergodicity and the related inferences of limit upper and lower expectations. Finally, though limit upper and lower expectations are often used to provide approximate information about the limit behaviour of time averages, we show that such an approximation is sub-optimal and that it can be significantly improved by directly using upper and lower expected time averages.

Abstract:The celebrated Evans-Searles, respectively Gallavotti-Cohen, fluctuation theorem concerns certain universal statistical features of the entropy production rate of a classical system in a transient, respectively steady, state. In this paper, we consider and compare several possible extensions of these fluctuation theorems to quantum systems. In addition to the direct two-time measurement approach whose discussion is based on (LMP 114:32 (2024)), we discuss a variant where measurements are performed indirectly on an auxiliary system called ancilla, and which allows to retrieve non-trivial statistical information using ancilla state tomography. We also show that modular theory provides a way to extend the classical notion of phase space contraction rate to the quantum domain, which leads to a third extension of the fluctuation theorems. We further discuss the quantum version of the principle of regular entropic fluctuations, introduced in the classical context in (Nonlinearity 24, 699 (2011)). Finally, we relate the statistical properties of these various notions of entropy production to spectral resonances of quantum transfer operators. The obtained results shed a new light on the nature of entropic fluctuations in quantum statistical mechanics.
