Abstract:A numerical method is developed to analyze the low-frequency noise of bridge under vehicle load. It is divided into two sections: (1) the analysis of vehicle-bridge interaction system based on finite element method (FEM), when the bridge is modeled by shell element and vehicle is modeled by a theoretical model with four degrees of freedom; (2) the numerical method to predict the low-frequency noise caused by bridge vibration, when the sound pressure is derived using the theory of acoustics and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technology. As an example, the low-frequency noise of a practical bridge is investigated. The numerical results are compared with the measured data in experiments, which indicate the validity of the current method. Finally, the influence of road surface roughness is discussed.

Abstract:This paper is to analyze the vehicle-bridge interaction system based on finite element method (FEM). The vehicle is studied as FEM model as well as the bridge: the bridge structure modeled by shell element considering the bridge deck's vibration, and the vehicle is also modeled by FEM. The coupling effect is implemented by displacement coordination condition and Newmark-β method is used to solve the dynamic equations. Numerical example shows validity of the FEM model of the bridge and vehicle, and the effects of the bridge deck and three-dimensional vehicle model on vehicle-caused vibration of bridge is discussed.
Scanning torsional-flexural frequencies of thin-walled box girders with rough surface from vehicles’ residual contact response: Theoretical study

Abstract:This paper studies theoretically the retrieval of torsional-flexural frequencies of mono-symmetric thin-walled box girder bridges from vehicles' residual contact response for the first time. To start, the three-dimensional vehicle–bridgeequations of motion including the lateral and torsional (coupled) and vertical (uncoupled) vibrations are derived for a moving test vehicle. Then, closed-form solutions for the vehicle and vehicle–bridge contact point are derived. The contact response is selected since it is free of vehicle frequency, which may overshadow the bridge frequencies in FFT spectra. The other disturbing factor is surface roughness, which will be resolved by the residue method, i.e., by using the residual response of two connected vehicles. Through the parametric study, the proposed approach is verified to be feasible. The conclusions include: (1) the contact response performs better than the vehicle response for all the scenarios considered; (2) the surface roughness effect can be virtually eliminated using the residual contact response even for damped bridges with not-so-good pavements; (3) a larger vehicle's eccentricity from bridge's centerline enables the torsional-flexural frequencies to be better identified; and (4) the first several flexural and torsional-flexural frequencies of the girder can always be identified for a wide variety of parameters considered.

Improved Vehicle Scanning Method for Bridge Damage Detection

Abstract:In this paper, the bridge damage is detected by improved vehicle scanning method. In order to extract the narrowband signals from the vehicle response, the improved VSM uses a designed elliptic filter. These narrowband signals generally have a good signal-to-noise ratio. Therefore, the signals can reconstruct vibration modes accurately. For a damaged bridge, the kinks on the vibration modes reveal the damage locations. It has been found this improved VSM yields a better result with a series of vehicles passing over the bridge. In addition, the reconstructed mode shapes reveal a more noticeable kink. It can be used to point out the damage location when compared to the use of existing VSMs. As a result, the improved VSM can distinguish the damage locations directly with little to none post-process. This is unlike the other VSMs generally need to compare baseline model, construct damage index, etc. to determine the damage.

Abstract:As an essential reference to bridge dynamic characteristics, the identification of bridge frequencies has far-reaching consequences for the health monitoring and damage evaluation of bridges. This study proposes a uniform scheme to identify bridge frequencies with two different subspace-based methodologies, i.e., an improved Short-Time Stochastic Subspace Identification (ST-SSI) method and an improved Multivariable Output Error State Space (MOESP) method, by simply adjusting the signal inputs. One of the key features of the proposed scheme is the dimensionless description of the vehicle–bridge interaction system and the employment of the dimensionless response of a two-axle vehicle as the state input, which enhances the robustness of the vehicle properties and speed. Additionally, it establishes the equation of the vehicle biaxial response difference considering the time shift between the front and the rear wheels, theoretically eliminating the road roughness information in the state equation and output signal effectively. The numerical examples discuss the effects of vehicle speeds, road roughness conditions, and ongoing traffic on the bridge identification. According to the dimensionless speed parameter Sv1 of the vehicle, the ST-SSI (Sv1 < 0.1) or MOESP (Sv1 ≥ 0.1) algorithm is applied to extract the frequencies of a simply supported bridge from the dimensionless response of a two-axle vehicle on a single passage. In addition, the proposed methodology is applied to two types of long-span complex bridges. The results show that the proposed approaches exhibit good performance in identifying multi-order frequencies of the bridges, even considering high vehicle speeds, high levels of road surface roughness, and random traffic flows.

Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. Vehicle-induced load, as one of the main excitation factors to bridge vibration and fatigue damage, plays a vital role in the analyzing of the vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI) system, but is still limited in both spatial location and numerical value. This paper presents an improved VBI system to investigate bridge vibration and vehicle vibration considering the coherent roughness and multiple lanes excitation. The vehicle and bridge subsystems and coherent roughness road are developed and are further integrated to form the VBI system based on the displacement relationship between wheels and the bridge. Further, the solution method of the VBI system is given, and the calculation platform is constructed. Meanwhile, the natural frequencies and mode shapes, as well as the mid-span displacement of the bridge, are verified with the results calculated in commercial software. Subsequently, the responses of the VBI system are investigated under different degrees of freedom of vehicle vibration, bridge damping ratio, road roughness class, multiple lanes, and velocity. It can be concluded that road roughness and velocity have a complex nonlinear relationship with the vibration of the VBI system. Finally, the Pareto strategy is applied to find the optimized value of suspension stiffness and damping, and the depth, unit mass, and elastic modulus of the bridge to minimize the system vibration. The results show an obvious improvement in the vibration of the VBI system.
Bridge Modal Identification using Acceleration Measurements within Moving Vehicles

Abstract:Vehicles crossing bridge structures respond dynamically to the bridge's vibrations. An acceleration signal collected within a moving vehicle contains a trace of the bridge's structural response, but also includes other sources such as the vehicle suspension system and surface roughness-induced vibrations. This paper introduces two methods for the bridge system identification using data collected by a network of moving vehicles. The contributions of the vehicle suspension system are removed by deconvolving the vehicle response in frequency domain. The first approach utilizes the vehicle transfer function, and the second uses EEMD method. Next, roughness-induced vibrations are extracted using second-order blind identification (SOBI) method. After these two processes the resulting signal is equivalent to the readings of mobile sensors that scan the bridge's dynamic response. Structural modal identification using mobile sensor data has been recently introduced as STRIDEX algorithm. The processed mobile sensor data is analyzed using STRIDEX to identify the modal properties of the bridge. The performance of the methods is validated on numerical case studies of a long single-span bridge monitored via a network of moving vehicles. The analyses consider three road surface roughness patterns. Results show that the proposed algorithms are successful in extracting pure bridge vibrations, and produce accurate and comprehensive modal properties of the bridge. The study shows that the proposed transfer function method can efficiently deconvolve the linear dynamics of a moving vehicle. EEMD method is able to extract vehicle dynamic response without a-priori information about the vehicle. This study is the first proposed methodology for complete bridge modal identification, including operational natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios using \textit{moving vehicles sensor data}.

Abstract:International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, Ahead of Print. The vehicle scanning method (VSM), originally known as the indirect method, is an efficient method for bridge health monitoring that utilizes mainly the responses collected by the moving test vehicles. This method offers the advantage of mobility, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness as it requires only one or a few vibration sensors mounted on the test vehicle, eliminating the need for deployment of numerous sensors on the bridge. Since its initial proposal by Yang and co-workers in 2004, the VSM has gained intensive attention from researchers worldwide. Over the past two decades, significant progress has been made in various aspects of the VSM, including the identification of bridge frequencies, mode shapes, damping ratios, damages, and surface roughness, as well as its application to railways. Previously, some review papers and the book Vehicle Scanning Method for Bridges were published on the subject. However, research on the subject continues to boom at a speed that cannot be adequately by existing review papers or book, as judged by the fast-increasing number of relevant publications. In order to provide researchers with an overall understanding of the up-to-date researches on the VSM, a state-of-the-art review of the related research conducted worldwide is compiled in this paper. Comments and recommendations will be provided at appropriate points, and concluding remarks, including future research directions, will be presented at the end of the paper.

Abstract:Mode shapes recovered for bridges are often distorted by bridge damping when using the vehicle scanning method (VSM). To remedy such an effect, a novel recursive formula utilizing the spatial correlation between the front and rear contact points of a two-axle scanning vehicle is theoretically established. For a bridge subjected to a two-axle moving test vehicle, the dynamic response of the system is first derived in closed form. The vehicle-bridge contact response is used as a substitute for the vehicle response in signal processing, since it is free of the masking effect posed by vehicle frequencies. Using either the Hilbert transform (HT) or wavelet transform (WT), instantaneous amplitudes are extracted for the component response of the bridge of concern. Further, recursive formula that accounts for the spatial correlation between the two contact points is established to recover the undistorted bridge mode shapes. The following are the conclusions: (1) The distortion effect of damping on bridge mode shapes can be effectively removed by the recursive formula against various factors; (2) the WT is more effective in recovering undistorted bridge mode shapes than the HT; and (3) the proposed formula works well for restoring the mode shapes of bridges with rough pavement, by adding an accompanying truck during the vehicle scanning.

Abstract:Bridge modal identification using an instrumented test vehicle as a moving sensor is promising but challenging. A key factor is to extract bridge dynamic components from vehicle responses measured when the bridge is operating. A new method based on an advanced adaptive signal decomposition technique, the successive variational mode decomposition (SVMD), has been developed to estimate the bridge modal parameters from the dynamic responses of a passing test vehicle. When bridge-related dynamic components are extracted from the decomposition, the natural excitation technique and/or random-decrement technique based fitting methods are used to estimate the modal frequencies and damping ratios of the bridge. Effects of measurement noise, moving speed and vehicle properties on the decomposition are investigated numerically. The superiority of SVMD in the decomposition is verified by comparing to another adaptive decomposition technique, the singular spectrum decomposition. The results of the proposed method confirm that the bridge modal frequencies can be identified from bridge related components with high accuracy, while damping ratio is more sensitive to the random operational load. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method for bridge monitoring using a moving test vehicle is further verified by an in-situ experimental test on a cable-stayed bridge. The components related to the bridge dynamic responses are successfully extracted from vehicle responses.

Abstract:Indirect method to identify dynamic properties of bridge by a passing vehicle is attractive recently since it does not require pre-installed sensors on bridge. However, the extracted dynamic properties are not accurate enough to identify local damages due to road surface roughness. To overcome this issue, a method to identify mode shapes and detect local damages in a simply supported bridge by movable sensory system is proposed in this study. Instead of using passing vehicles, two stationary vehicles are adopted in this study to perform as movable sensory system. They stay stationary at two different locations on the bridge subject to ambient environmental excitation, and their vertical accelerations are collected to calculate the vertical displacement of the two contact points between vehicles and bridge. Then they move to another two locations and the same procedures are repeated. After all locations along the bridge are tested, a matrix similar to frequency response matrix can be constructed and SVD method is used to extract the mode shapes. The element stiffness is thereafter evaluated by the fundamental mode shape, which can be then used to detect local stiffness reduction in the bridge. Numerical study has been conducted to validate the proposed method, and the effect of bridge damping, vehicle damping, measurement noise, and traffic flow is investigated. Moreover, field testing was conducted on Li-Zi-Wan Bridge and the results showed that the proposed method can re-construct the mode shapes and evaluate element bending stiffness as accurately as conventional direct approach. The proposed method is convenient and easy to implement in practice; and it is more robust because it is not affected by road surface roughness.

Abstract:This paper investigates the effect of damping on the torsional-flexural frequencies of monosymmetric thin-walled beams via the scanning by a single-axle test vehicle. A bi-directional damping model is adopted to account for the vertical and torsional-flexural motions of the beam, as they are mechanically uncoupled. To start, the closed-form solutions are derived for the vehicle, the beam and the vehicle-bridge contact responses. Based on the hypothesis of rigid cross sections, the rocking contact response is derived, which enables the torsional-flexural frequencies of the beam to be separated from the vertical ones. Both uniform and bi-directional damping properties are considered for the beam. The pollution effect of pavement roughness is overcome by using the residual contact response generated by two connected single-axle test vehicles. Through the parametric analysis, it is confirmed that: (1) the rocking contact response enables the first few torsional-flexural frequencies to be separately retrieved; (2) the damping ratio in each direction only affects the detectability of the frequencies, especially those of the high modes, in that direction for monosymmetric cross sections; (3) the residual contact response exhibits some robustness in identifying the frequencies of thin-walled beams with surface roughness and environmental noise effect; (4) a test vehicle moving in the side lane (with larger eccentricity from bridge's centerline) at a speed of 10 m/s (36 km/h) is recommended for the field test.

Abstract:The health monitoring of bridge under moving vehicles demands a high-efficient time-varying characteristic analysis method to extract the frequency fluctuations caused by vehicle-bridge dynamic interaction effect. Characteristics identification of structures becomes a challenging task especially when time-varying vibration modes are involved. For this purpose, an instantaneous frequency identification technique based on modified S-transform reassignment is presented in this paper. Firstly, the general approximation between structural instantaneous frequency and S-transform is deduced. The Gaussian window is employed in S-transform and a novel first-order frequency function with two parameters is added into the Gaussian window function to improve the time–frequency resolution. The added function makes the Gaussian window scalable-sliding and the optimal values of the parameters are selected based on time–frequency concentration criterion. Considering the Rényi entropy as the measurement of criterion, the information performance extracted from S-transform spectrogram is evaluated. Then the time–frequency reassignment technique is applied to improve the readability of S-transform spectrogram to assure the accuracy of the extracted instantaneous characteristics, which enhances the time–frequency concentration efficiently. The proposed method is verified by numerical simulation, the results obtained by the spectrograms derived from short-time Fourier transform, wavelet transform, modified S-transform and reassigned modified S-transform are compared. Afterwards, the time-varying frequency components related to the vehicle-bridge interaction are extracted from the response signal. Numerical simulations involving different parameter analysis and laboratory experiments are conducted to validate the flexibility of the technique in vehicle-bridge system. The effect of vehicle weight, speed and road surface roughness on the identified results are discussed. Both numerical and experimental results have demonstrated that a higher time–frequency concentration in the spectrogram can be observed of the proposed modified S-transform reassignment method than other time–frequency methods, and subsequently a higher accuracy of instantaneous frequency identification is achieved which provides a good tool for time-varying characteristic analysis in bridge health monitoring.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel bridge damage identification method employing Cohen's d as an effect size indicator, predicated on the detection of bridge damage through the coupled vibration between a vehicle and the bridge. By analyzing the dynamic response of the bridge as a vehicle passes over, this method effectively extracts the modal parameters of the bridge and facilitates the identification of bridge damage. Numerical models of the bridge under various damage conditions, including no damage, mid-span damage, and damage at the 1/4 and 3/4 span locations, have been constructed to substantiate the efficacy and precision of the effect size as a damage indicator. Furthermore, to address the challenge of accurately identifying damage at boundaries, which is often confounded by boundary effects, a boundary subdivision method has been defined for the detection of boundary damage. Through the implementation of a real-bridge test based on indirect measurement technology, the self-vibration frequency of the bridge was successfully extracted. This empirical data was then compared and analyzed against results from ANSYS numerical simulations, thereby validating the practicality and accuracy of the proposed method. In the final analysis, the influence of random traffic flow on the bridge damage identification results was examined. The findings indicate that the vibrations in simply supported beam bridges are intensified due to the impact of random traffic flow, which aids in enhancing the accuracy of damage identification. The introduction of this method provides a new quantitative tool for bridge health monitoring, enabling the rapid and accurate identification of bridge damage without interrupting traffic. It holds significant value for engineering applications in bridge maintenance and safety assessment.

To excite sufficient vibrations of bridges for more effective modal experiments to take place, traveling vehicles were utilized in many bridge field inspection campaigns in history. However, the dynamics of a bridge subjected to the traveling vehicles are of changed resonant properties compared with those of the same structure with the ambient excitation in nature. Therefore, the field modal experiments employing vehicle excitations might unfavorably lead to shifted measurement results of low-order natural frequencies for long-span bridges of large mass. Using Xinjiang Bridge (a single-tower pre-stressed concrete cable-stayed bridge with spans [math]) as the engineering background, this paper validates this technical notion based on reliable physical experiments and numerical simulations and seeks a practical approach to deal with the issue. It is found that the maximum deviation between the low-order modal frequencies measured on Xinjiang Bridge for the vehicle excitation case and those measured for the ambient excitation case (the accurate values) reaches 0.65[math]Hz, and the deviation between the lower limit of the usual vehicle excitation's energy band and the modal frequency measured (factor 1) and the traveling vehicles' speed (factor 2) are the two key factors influencing the modal frequency shifts. An empirical model to compensate for modal frequencies' deviations is formulated considering the two key factors accordingly, which is of high-practical significance in future applications of the modal experiments using vehicle excitations to other long-span bridges.

Automatic modal parametric identification of bridge based on mobile sensing

Abstract:Here, an automatic modal parametric identification method of bridge based on mobile sensing was proposed. The mobile sensing unit could include a power car and a rigid small trailer. The power car was equipped with data acquisition and transmission equipment and Beidou time service module. The rigid trailer was equipped with vibration acceleration transducers. The connection between the power car and the trailer could have good vibration isolation effect, and effectively obtain vibration signals at different positions of bridge structure itself. During modal tests, the mobile sensing unit could automatically obtain bridge structural vibration information at different measured points in turn, and the phase time synchronization could be realized between bridge vibration information collected on the mobile sensing unit and that obtained on a fixed reference unit through Beidou time service module. The automatic modal parametric identification method based on the stochastic subspace method could quickly extract structural modal information from vibration information obtained both on the fixed reference unit and the mobile sensing unit. It was shown that the proposed method can obtain structural vibration information with higher spatial resolution, and then obtain accurate structural vibration modal shape information. The mobile sensing unit was applied in modal tests of a through tied arch bridge to acquire good modal identification effect.

Abstract:This study presents a flexible approach for bridge modal identification using smartphone data collected by a large pool of passing vehicles. With each trip of a mobile sensor, the spatio-temporal response of the bridge is sampled, plus various sources of noise, e.g., vehicle dynamics, environmental effects, and road profile. This paper provides further evidence to support the hypothesis that through trip aggregation, such noise effects can be mitigated and the true bridge dynamics are exhibited. In this study, the continuous wavelet transform is applied to each trip, and the results are combined to estimate the structural modal response of the bridge. The Crowdsourced Modal Identification using Continuous Wavelets (CMICW) method is presented and validated in an experimental setting. In summary, the method successfully identifies natural frequencies and absolute mode shapes of a bridge with high accuracy. Notably, these results are the first to extract torsional mode shape information from mobile sensor data. Moreover, the influence of vehicle speed on the estimation accuracy is investigated. Finally, a hybrid simulation framework is proposed to account for the vehicle dynamics within the raw mobile sensing data. The proposed method is successful in removing vehicle dynamic effects and identifying modal properties. These results contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the practice of mobile crowdsensing for physical properties of transportation infrastructure.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for accurately estimating the natural frequencies of bridges by simultaneously measuring the acceleration vibration data of vehicles and bridges and applying modal analysis theory. Vibration sensors synchronized with GPS timing were installed on both vehicles and bridges, achieving stable and high-precision time synchronization. This enabled the computation of the bridge's Frequency Response Functions (FRFs) for each mode, leading to a refined estimation of natural frequencies. The validity of the theory was confirmed through numerical simulations and experimental tests. The simulations confirmed its effectiveness, and similar trends were observed in actual bridge measurements. Consequently, this method significantly enhances the feasibility of bridge health monitoring systems. The proposed method is suitable for road bridges with spans ranging from short- to medium-span length, where the vehicle is capable of exciting the bridge.
