Abstract:In recent years, government investments in implementing restrictive public policies on the treatment and discharge of effluents from the aquaculture industry have increased. Hence, efficient and cleaner methods for aquaculture production are needed. Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) offers water conservation by recycling the treated aquaculture water for reuse. RAS wastewater treatment using a moving bed bioreactors (MBBRs) process has been considered well suited for maintaining good water quality, thereby making fish farming more sustainable. Currently, improvements were achieved in tackling the influence of salinity, organic matter, disinfectant, and bioreactor start-up process on the MBBR performance efficiency. This review highlights an updated overview of recent development made using MBBR to treat the residual water from RAS. Precisely, nitrification and simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND), and other hybrid processes for nitrogen removal were elucidated. Finally, future challenges and prospects of MBBRs in RAS facilities that need to be considered were also proposed.

Abstract:The recovery of ammonia–nitrogen during wastewater treatment and water purification is increasingly critical in energy and economic development. The concentration of ammonia–nitrogen in wastewater is different depending on the type of wastewater, making it challenging to select ammonia–nitrogen recovery technology. Meanwhile, the conventional nitrogen removal method wastes ammonia–nitrogen resources. Based on the circular economy, this review comprehensively introduces the characteristics of several main ammonia–nitrogen source wastewater plants and their respective challenges in treatment, including municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater, livestock and poultry wastewater and landfill leachate. Furthermore, we introduce the main methods currently adopted in the ammonia–nitrogen removal process of wastewater from physical (air stripping, ion exchange and adsorption, membrane and capacitive deionization), chemical (chlorination, struvite precipitation, electrochemical oxidation and photocatalysis) and biological (classical and typical activated sludge, novel methods based on activated sludge, microalgae and photosynthetic bacteria) classification based on the ammonia recovery concept. We discuss the applicable methods of recovering ammonia nitrogen in several main wastewater plants. Finally, we prospect the research direction of ammonia removal and recovery in wastewater based on sustainable development.

Abstract:Abstract The circular economy requires advanced methods to recycle waste matter such as ammonia, which can be further used as a fuel and a precursor of numerous value-added chemicals. Here, we review methods for the recovery of ammonia from wastewater with emphasis on biological and physicochemical techniques, and their applications. Biological techniques involve nitrification, denitrification, and anammox processes and the use of membrane bioreactors. Physicochemical techniques comprise adsorption, membrane filtration, ion exchange, chemical precipitation, ammonia stripping, electrochemical oxidation, photocatalytic oxidation, bioelectrochemical systems, and membrane hybrid systems. We found that nitrification and anammox processes in membrane bioreactors stand out for their cost-effectiveness, reduced sludge production, and energy efficiency. The use of struvite precipitation is an efficient, environmentally friendly, and recyclable method for ammonia removal. Membrane hybrid systems are promising for ammonia recovery, nutrient concentration, and wastewater treatment, with applications in fertilizer production and water purification. Overall, nitrogen removal ranges from 28 to 100%, and nitrogen recovery ranges from 9 to 100%.

Abstract:Ammonia‐nitrogen is a crucial component of landfill leachate and a major factor in the eutrophication of aquatic bodies. A novel approach was developed using the continuous flat-sheet gas-permeable membranes (GPMs) reactor pretreatment to efficiently remove and recover ammonia‐nitrogen. The total ammonia‐nitrogen removal efficiency reached 74.2 ± 4.5 % and 66.2 ± 4.9 %, respectively, when simulated nitrogenous wastewater and landfill leachate were treated under the following conditions: influent flow rate 25 L/d, pH 11.0, temperature 25 °C, sulfuric acid absorption concentration 2.5 %, and sulfuric acid absorption flow velocity 70 mL/min. In addition, (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 (i.e., a crucial ammonia resource) was recovered efficiently, and the flat-sheet GPMs exhibited stable hydrophobic properties. Specifically, the combination of membrane pretreatment and biological treatment reduced the ammonia‐nitrogen concentration from ~230 mg/L (with direct biological treatment only) to ~40 mg/L, with the removal efficiency benefitting from the increase in the chemical oxygen demand/total ammonia nitrogen (COD/TAN) ratio of the leachate after membrane pretreatment. Furthermore, microorganisms that are capable of ammonia‐nitrogen removal ( Planktosalinus and Rheinheimera ) were selectively enriched. Overall, this study provides a practical method to enhance ammonia‐nitrogen removal and recovery for the treatment of wastewater containing high ammonia‐nitrogen concentrations.

Abstract:Ammonia nitrogen pollution is one of the major factors that cause the eutrophication of water bodies. For this reason,it has become a hot issue in the field of environmental engineering. A series of efficient bio-technologies had been developed for removing nitrogen from ammonia-containing wastewaters. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process,single reactor for high activity ammonia removal over nitrite (SHARON) process,and completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite (CANON) process are typical integrative biological nitrogen removal processes. In this review,principles,characteristics,performance and applications of the three typical processes are analyzed respectively to provide references for the further development of these technologies. The integrative bio- technologies for nitrogen removal possess the advantages of shorter process cycle,simpler operation,less land requirement and lower cost. At present,the autotrophic integrative nitrogen removal processes based on ammonia oxidizing bacteria and anammox bacteria have become the research frontier,and the further research should be focused on cultivating high-quality species and the optimization of reactor.

Abstract:The estimated global population growth of 81 million people per year, combined with increased rates of urbanization and associated industrial processes, result in volumes of high strength ammonia wastewater that cannot be treated in a cost-effective or sustainable manner using the floc-based conventional activated sludge approach of nitrification and denitrification. Biofilm and aerobic granular sludge technologies have shown promise to significantly improve the performance of biological nitrogen removal systems treating high strength wastewater. This is partly due to enhanced biomass retention and their ability to sustain diverse microbial populations with juxtaposing growth requirements. Recent research has also demonstrated the value of hybrid systems with heterogeneous bioaggregates to mitigate biofilm and granule instability during long-term operation. In the context of high strength ammonia wastewater treatment, conventional nitrification–denitrification is hampered by high energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Anammox-based processes such as partial nitritation–anammox and partial denitrification–anammox represent more cost-effective and sustainable methods of removing reactive nitrogen from wastewater. There is also growing interest in the use of photosynthetic bacteria for ammonia recovery from high strength waste streams, such that nitrogen can be captured and concentrated in its reactive form and recycled into high value products. The purpose of this review is to explore recent advancements and emerging approaches related to high strength ammonia wastewater treatment.

Abstract:<p>Water contamination is a growing environmental issue. Several harmful effects on human health and the environment are attributed to nitrogen contamination of water sources. Consequently, many countries have strict regulations on nitrogen compound concentrations in wastewater effluents. Wastewater treatment is carried out using energy- and cost-intensive biological processes, which convert nitrogen compounds into innocuous dinitrogen gas. On the other hand, nitrogen is also an essential nutrient. Artificial fertilizers are produced by fixing dinitrogen gas from the atmosphere, in an energy-intensive chemical process. Ideally, we should be able to spend less energy and chemicals to remove nitrogen from wastewater and instead recover a fraction of it for use in fertilizers and similar applications. In this review, we present an overview of various technologies of biological nitrogen removal including nitrification, denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), as well as bioelectrochemical systems and microalgal growth for nitrogen recovery. We highlighted the nitrogen removal efficiency of these systems at different temperatures and operating conditions. The advantages, practical challenges, and potential for nitrogen recovery of different treatment methods are discussed.</p>

Abstract:The nitrogenous compounds present in wastewaters create severe biotic stress and alter the biodiversity when discharged into aquatic ecosystems. Biological nitrogen removal (BNR) encompassing well-established and emerging technologies offer an effective process for removal of nitrogen from wastewater and side-streams. The present study provides a comprehensive review of BNR based technologies that include conventional N/DN, PN-ANAMMOX, and simultaneous deammonification and denitrification. In addition to detailed mechanisms, this study covers bioreactor configurations, operational parameters, efficacies, and process control strategies. Furthermore, recent developments, key prospects, challenges, and ongoing research trends are discussed. The economic aspects of BNR processes have been scarcely reported in the literature; thus, this review also includes the life-cycle assessment of BNR processes to ascertain the feasibility for wastewater treatment plants of different capacity. This review will be beneficial to researchers and practitioners in improving the performance of current BNR systems to develop sustainable and cost-effective nitrogen removal processes for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:This review critically assesses nitrogen removal technologies applied in the reject water treatment, across different stages of technological development, with a focus on their economic and environmental impacts. The prevalent use of biological processes raises concerns due to potential environmental impacts caused by N2O emissions. However, partial nitritation-anaerobic ammonium oxidation demonstrated economic benefits and the potential for positive environmental outcomes when properly operated and controlled. Furthermore, reject water, in many cases, provides sufficient nitrogen concentrations for nitrogen recovery processes, such as ammonia stripping, substituting production of industrial fertilizers and contributing to a circular economy. Nonetheless, their financial competitiveness is subject to various conditions, including the nitrogen concentration or reject water flow. As the environmental benefits of bioprocesses and economic benefits of nitrogen recovery processes may vary, it is crucial to further optimize both and investigate novel promising technologies such as electrochemical systems, denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation or direct ammonia oxidation.

Abstract:Nitrogen-rich wastewater is a major environmental issue that requires proper treatment before disposal. This comprehensive overview covers biological, physical, and chemical nitrogen removal methods. Simultaneous nitrification–denitrification (SND) is most effective in saline water when utilizing both aerobic and anoxic conditions with diverse microbial populations for nitrogen removal. Coupling anammox with denitrification could increase removal rates and reduce energy demand. Suspended growth bioreactors effectively treated diverse COD/N ratios and demonstrated resilience to low C/N ratios. Moving biofilm bioreactors exhibit reduced mortality rates, enhanced sludge–liquid separation, increased treatment efficiency, and stronger biological structures. SND studies show ≥90% total nitrogen removal efficiency (%RETN) in diverse setups, with Defluviicoccus, Nitrosomonas, and Nitrospira as the main microbial communities, while anammox–denitrification achieved a %RETN of 77%. Systems using polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate as a growth medium showed a %RETN ≥ 75%. Air-lift reflux configurations exhibited high %RETN and %RENH4, reducing costs and minimizing sludge formation. Microwave pretreatment and high-frequency electric fields could be used to improve the %RENH4. Adsorption/ion exchange, membrane distillation, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration exhibit promise in industrial wastewater treatment. AOPs and sulfate-based oxidants effectively eliminate nitrogen compounds from industrial wastewater. Tailoring proposed treatments for cost-effective nitrogen removal, optimizing microbial interactions, and analyzing the techno-economics of emerging technologies are crucial.

Abstract:<p>In current biological nitrogen removal (BNR) processes, most of ammonium in municipal wastewater is biologically transformed to nitrogen gas, making ammonium recovery impossible. Thus, this article aims to provide a holistic review with in-depth discussion on (i) current BNR processes for municipal wastewater treatment, (ii) environmental and economic costs behind ammonium in municipal wastewater, (iii) state of the art of ammonium recovery from municipal wastewater including anaerobic membrane bioreactor turning municipal wastewater to a liquid fertilizer, capturing ammonium in phototrophic biomass, waste activated sludge for land application, bioelectrochemical systems, biological conversion of ammonium to nitrous oxide as a fuel oxidizer and adsorption, (iv) feasibility and challenge of adsorption for ammonium recovery from municipal wastewater and (v) innovative municipal wastewater reclamation processes coupled with ammonium recovery. Moving forward, municipal wastewater reclamation and resource recovery should be addressed under the framework of circular economy.</p>

Abstract:The deammonification process is an efficient alternative to remove nitrogen from wastewater with a low carbon/nitrogen ratio. However, the reactor configuration and operational factors pose challenges for applications in treatment systems to remove nitrogen from municipal and industrial wastewater on a large scale. To address this gap, this study evaluated a new deammonification strategy using a single-stage membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR), operated with continuous flow, under different hydraulic retention times (HRT) in the post-treatment of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater with a low nitrogen load, similar to domestic wastewater. The performance of the MABR reactor and the microbial community was evaluated over a long period at HRTs of 12, 24, and 36 hours, corresponding to nitrogen volumetric loads of 181.0 g N.m −3 .d −1 , 87.4 g N.m −3 .d −1 and 67.8 g N.m −3 .d −1 . The results show that total nitrogen (TN) removal and the microbial community in the MABR reactor were influenced by changes in HRT. The highest efficiency in TN removal was obtained with an HRT of 24 hours, in which the maximum TN removal efficiency was 77.04%. Candidatus Brocadia and Candidatus Jettenia were the two genera of bacteria with Anammox activity present in the reactor, with relative abundances of 7.27% and 0.74%, respectively. This study helps to deepen the understanding of the application of the single-stage MABR reactor in real wastewater treatment with a low nitrogen load.

Abstract:Animal manure and slurries produced by the animal breeding sector are still an environmental risk because their high nitrogen content hinders biological treatment processes. In addition, sludge from small wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) has few disposal options if a life cycle approach is considered. In this regard, the recent trend in wastewater processes is to move forward resources recovery options, moving from a linear to a circular economy approach. Therefore, this study aims to optimise anaerobic co-digestion of cattle manure and WWTP sludge, by removing the excess of ammonium nitrogen through struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate), prior to the biomethanation process, thus allowing the simultaneous recovery of energy and valuable N-P fertilizer.

Mainstream Ammonium Recovery to Advance Sustainable Urban Wastewater Management

Abstract:Throughout the 20th century, the prevailing approach toward nitrogen management in municipal wastewater treatment was to remove ammonium by transforming it into dinitrogen (N2) using biological processes such as conventional activated sludge. While this has been a very successful strategy for safeguarding human health and protecting aquatic ecosystems, the conversion of ammonium into its elemental form is incompatible with the developing circular economy of the 21st century. Equally important, the activated sludge process and other emerging ammonium removal pathways have several environmental and technological limitations. Here, we assess that the theoretical energy embedded in ammonium in domestic wastewater represents roughly 38-48% of the embedded chemical energy available in the whole of the discharged bodily waste. The current routes for ammonium removal not only neglect the energy embedded in ammonium, but they can also produce N2O, a very strong greenhouse gas, with such emissions comprising the equivalent of 14-26% of the overall carbon footprint of wastewater treatment plants. N2O emissions often exceed the carbon emissions related to the electricity consumption for the process requirements of WWTPs. Considering these limitations, there is a need to develop alternative ammonium management approaches that center around recovery of ammonium from domestic wastewater rather than deal with its "destruction" into elemental dinitrogen. Current ammonium recovery techniques are applicable only at orders of magnitude above domestic wastewater strength, and so new techniques based on physicochemical adsorption are of particular interest. A new pathway is proposed that allows for mainstream ammonium recovery from wastewater based on physicochemical adsorption through development of polymer-based adsorbents. Provided adequate adsorbents corresponding to characteristics outlined in this paper are designed and brought to industrial production, this adsorption-based approach opens perspectives for mainstream continuous adsorption coupled with side-stream recovery of ammonium with minimal chemical requirements. This proposed pathway can bring forward an effective resource-oriented approach to upgrade the fate of ammonium in urban water management without generating hidden externalized environmental costs.

Abstract:Membrane gas extraction technique enables recovery of high-purity ammonia from waste streams through gas-phase mass transfer across hydrophobic membranes. This study demonstrates the potential of ammonia recovery with gas permeable membrane, operated at moderately alkaline feed pH, as a substitute for the current approach of biological nitrogen removal in domestic wastewater treatment process. The measured apparent ammonia mass transfer coefficient in 3-h operation at a feed pH of 9.2 was 0.0713 cm/min, which, despite being 1.53-fold smaller than that at a feed pH of 11, was excellent for application to domestic wastewater. Application of lower feed pH prevented inorganic fouling of membrane. A notable advantage of the moderately alkaline feed pH condition is that the consumption of alkaline agents added for deprotonating bicarbonate instead of ammonium can be minimized. Calculation shows an opportunity that the monetary value of recovered ammonia exceeds the cost of the base consumed when moderately alkaline feed pH is applied. This study substantially extends current knowledge of the membrane gas extraction technique for ammonia recovery by investigating the process kinetics, fouling propensity, and chemical requirements as functions of pH, thereby verifying the potential of this technique to contribute to improving the sustainability of the global nitrogen cycle.

Abstract:Biological wastewater treatment processes such as activated sludge and anaerobic digestion remain the most favorable when compared to processes such as chemical precipitation and ion exchange due to their cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, ease of operation, and low maintenance. Since Abattoir Wastewater (AWW) is characterized as having high organic content, anaerobic digestion is slow and inadequate for complete removal of all nutrients and organic matter when required to produce a high-quality effluent that satisfies discharge standards. Multi-integrated systems can be designed in which additional stages are added before the anaerobic digester (pre-treatment), as well as after the digester (post-treatment) for nutrient recovery and pathogen removal. This can aid the water treatment plant effluent to meet the discharge regulations imposed by the legislator and allow the possibility for reuse on-site. This review aims to provide information on the principles of anaerobic digestion, aeration pre-treatment technology using enzymes and a hybrid membrane bioreactor, describing their various roles in AWW treatment. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification are essential to add after anaerobic digestion for nutrient recovery utilizing a single step process. Nutrient recovery has become more favorable than nutrient removal in wastewater treatment because it consumes less energy, making the process cost-effective. In addition, recovered nutrients can be used to make nutrient-based fertilizers, reducing the effects of eutrophication and land degradation. The downflow expanded granular bed reactor is also compared to other high-rate anaerobic reactors, such as the up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and the expanded granular sludge bed reactor (EGSB).

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), a promising technology for bio-nitrogen removal, has been a research hotspot in the field of leachate treatment. However, the inhibitory effect of organic matter and high-strength nitrogen on anammox bacteria and the limitation of the theoretical total nitrogen removal efficiency of anammox (<90%) are obstacles to its wider application. The mechanisms of the inhibitory effects of organic matter, ammonium, and nitrite on anammox bacteria, and the corresponding control strategies are summaries. The anammox-based processes developed for advanced nitrogen removal (ANR) in recent years, including anammox-based heterotrophic denitrification, anammox-based partial denitrification, and anammox-based constructed wetlands are systematically discussed. An integrated anaerobic system of simultaneous denitrification and methanogenesis (anaerobic membrane bioreactor) + anammox-based processes was proposed for the ANR and optimal energy recovery from leachate. This process showed a 16% increase in biogas yield, a 64% decrease in aeration energy consumption, and the decrease in the external carbon source is expected to be 100% compared to conventional leachate treatment processes such as anoxic/oxic-membrane bioreactors. Finally, a few research perspectives on leachate treatment using anammox-based processes are reviewed. The conclusions drawn from the studies presented herein provide guidance for further research and engineering applications in the field of leachate treatment.AnMBR pretreatment is proposed for energy recovery and elimination of inhibition of anammox bacteria by organics.Anammox-based heterotrophic denitrification, partial denitrification, and anammox-based constructed wetlands are discussed for ANR.SDM is proposed for ANR from leachate via anammox effluent recirculation.An SDM(AnMBR)+anammox based process is proposed for energy saving and recovery.

Abstract:Abstract Massive quantity of industrial wastewater is produced annually, and biological nitrogen recovery from these streams is a promising and sustainable measure to avoid nitrogen burdens on the environment and to provide novel resources to be reused in societies. This chapter discusses a few processes (bioelectrochemical systems, salt crystallization, and membrane technologies) to recover nitrogen in the form of microbial protein, organic fertilizers from microalgae, nitrous oxide, or ammonium. The microbial protein production has a low water and land demand, and the produced protein can be used as high-quality feeds for animals, or as supplement protein for humans. The organic fertilizer from microalgae may be applied in agriculture for growth of food crops. The recovered nitrous oxide can act as an effective oxidant for combustion fuels. The recovered ammonium can also be used for fertilizer production. Challenges and perspectives of the biological nitrogen recovery are concluded at the end of this chapter.
