Abstract:This study aims to contribute to understanding the gender biases that emerge in the digital technology-related field. More specifically we concentrate on examining whether gender gaps are diminishing or are persistent in terms of women's enrollment in technology-related programs at the tertiary level of education and for female STEM graduates. Next, this evidence is confronted with gender biases in the labor market regarding changing female and male employment in high-tech sectors; we detect whether gender gaps grow or diminish in this respect. Our data cover 29 European countries in the period 2011–2020 and are extracted from World Economic Forum reports, Eurostat, and UNESCO databases. Our methodological framework combines time trends analysis, cross-country inequalities, distributional changes, and non-parametric approximations examining relationships between variables. Our major conclusions support the view of negligibly diminishing gender inequalities in technology-related education and demonstrate increasing gender gaps regarding high-tech employment.

Abstract:The perception of teamwork and leadership as well as possibilities of improvements within groups completing virtual engineering laboratories are investigated and discussed. Results are differentiated by gender. The evaluations are found to be mostly homogeneous with the exception of the evaluation of female team leaders. To adapt to changes in digital transformation and related Learning and Working 4.0, laboratories in engineering education must leap forward and employ well‐thought‐out pedagogical designs. This includes digital laboratories that in return change social dynamics and interaction patterns of students. This contribution takes the first step of examining gender‐specific teamwork and leadership of groups conducting a digital laboratory in fluid mechanics. Self and external evaluation of perceived teamwork of team members (TMs) and leaders (TLs) was analyzed. Furthermore, possibilities for improvements were evaluated. A mixed‐methods analysis was performed with respect to gender and role to assess whether differences occur. Conclusions show considerable homogeneity between genders and roles and identify communication as most important point of improvement.

Abstract:Abstract We provide the first systematic analysis of how attitudes toward workplace automation and artificial intelligence (AI) vary by gender, using survey data from ten countries. Our analyses reveal a significant gender gap in the perceived fairness of automation and AI, similar in magnitude to that of job offshoring. Drawing on the literature on economic shocks, we examine four explanations based on gender differences in (a) economic self-interest, (b) technological knowledge, (c) sociotropic concerns and (d) social status perceptions. Including these variables in our models, however, narrows the observed gender gap by only 40%. To better understand the sources of attitudinal variation by gender, we rely on Kitagawa–Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition, which shows that distributional differences in group characteristics, specifically women’s lower levels of technological knowledge and self-reported social status, account for approximately one-third of the gap, while the other two-thirds are explained by differences in how specific variables differentially influence attitudes.

Between Frustration and Invigoration: Women Talking about Digital Technology at Work

Abstract:Work, Employment and Society, Ahead of Print. This study addresses the dearth of gender analysis within debates about technological innovation and workplace change. Qualitative analysis of 12 focus groups conducted with women in 'frontline' and 'professional' roles discussing their use and engagement with digital technologies at work reveals contrasting narratives of 'digital frustration' and 'digital invigoration'. To explain these distinct narratives, we synthesise insights from science and technology studies with findings from scholarship on gendered work and labour market inequality to show that these differences are not driven solely by a technology's form or the degree of automation it ostensibly represents. Instead, women's narratives reflect an interplay between technological design, employment context and workers' own voice and agency. These findings challenge assumptions about the totalising and transformative power of work-related technologies, redirecting attention to how social and political contestations over digital technologies inform worker experiences and shape the future of work.

Abstract:With a view to understanding the changes taking place, studying their impact, and identifying potential opportunities for achieving gender equality, the chapter aims to look at women in the labour market and at the gender digital divide. It discusses the structural change for equality in the information and knowledge society and analyses women's autonomy in the new technology paradigm. It provides four different gendered perspectives to understand women in the labour market in the era of technological development. A gendered perspective on new forms of employment highlights how job markets can be opened up in new and inclusive ways to women. The chapter discusses that if the digital gap is bridged, then it can provide new sources of global economic growth.

Abstract:How and why do societal, organizational and individual factors affecting gender equity in the IT field change over time? To answer this question a longitudinal investigation of the nature of change in factors affecting the position of women in the IT profession was undertaken. It was conducted in Ireland against the backdrop of fluctuations in the nation’s socio-economic status. The individual differences theory of gender and IT was used to analyze life history interviews conducted at four points in time with a total of 63 women whose stories cover the decades from the 1970s to the 2010s. What resulted is a dynamic extension of this theory through the addition of seven themes that characterize the nature of change in factors affecting women IT professionals. The effect on women of economic changes in Ireland is shown to occur through changes in other factors: environmental (i.e., policy, infrastructural, and cultural), identity (e.g., motherhood) and individual (e.g., family). The results reveal both gradual and dramatic changes in an evolving picture of women in this sector, against the back drop of the peaks and valleys of Ireland’s economy. Both transformational and enduring images emerge from this look at Ireland over five decades.

Abstract:With the rising importance of technology in the information and knowledge society, the gender–technology relationship is ever more important when thinking about gender equality. Gender researchers have shown not only that the use and design of technologies is gendered, but that people also position themselves in relation to technology, based on certain gendered assumptions about technology in societies. This article looks at how people working in quintessential information and knowledge society professions, namely information communication technology (ICT) work, position themselves in relation to technology. Using a social constructivist framework and a discourse analysis, it shows how gender differences are achieved in communication: men tend to describe technology as a toy, while women tend to describe technology as a tool. In some instances this pattern is broken, which opens up the opportunity to rethink the gender binary. This article argues that the way in which people position themselves in relation to technology continues to be gendered, which may threaten gender equality in the information and knowledge society, and it also indicates that there is the possibility of change.

Abstract:The digital industries in the United Kingdom are said to have specific ‘image problems’. Public sector policy-makers and commentators have argued that few women choose to enter this sector because there is a misfit between its dominant image as ‘geeky’, technical and masculine, and women workers' self-perceptions. Drawing on Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity, this article juxtaposes these public policy claims with recruitment literature which seeks to disrupt or shift away from traditional stereotypes of the digital industries worker. This article considers the unintended consequences of these discursive objects and argues that they contribute to the re-inscription of gender norms rather than their disruption. The analysis identifies repetitions of particular discursive practices which fix gender offering only narrowly legible worker subject roles with which women workers are expected to find their fit. This article argues that attention to discursive performativity in official public texts and visual and textual organisational artefacts offers a means for enhanced understanding of the transformations and continuities of inequalities within contemporary work domains.

Abstract:Technological change and globalization have caused unprecedented transformations of labour markets, resulting in a growing division between workers who perform cognitive vs non-cognitive tasks. To date, only few studies have addressed the fertility effects of these long-term structural changes. This study fills that gap. We measure the cognitive task content of occupations using data from the Employment Survey of the German Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, which we link to individual histories from the German Socio-Economic Panel 1984-2018. We find that women and men with non-cognitive jobs are increasingly less likely to enter parenthood; this is reflected in lower first-birth intensities but also in higher probabilities of childlessness compared with workers in highly cognitive jobs. These findings imply that structural shifts in the labour market are exacerbating disparities between low-skilled and highly skilled individuals, not only within the labour market but also in the realm of family formation.

Abstract:While in many economic models the 'representative agent' continues to be a useful abstraction to discuss numerous important questions, the actual populations the models and discussions relate to consist of diverse individuals. They differ from each other across countless dimensions including that of gender, with the quantitatively most important division being that between men and women. Across time and space there have been differences in peoples' ideas about what it means to be a 'man' and a 'woman'. These attitudes, both on an individual as well as on a societal level, impact many, perhaps even most, fundamental individual decisions. Everything from educational choices and labour market outcomes to family formation and consumption choices are, to different degrees, affected by ideas about gender roles. Abstract:Addressing women's under-representation in the software industry, a widely recognized concern, requires attracting as well as retaining more women. Hearing from women practitioners, particularly those positioned in multi-cultural settings, about their challenges and and adopting their lived experienced solutions can support the design of programs to resolve the under-representation issue. Goal: We investigated the challenges women face in global software development teams, particularly what motivates women to leave their company; how those challenges might break down according to demographics; and strategies to mitigate the identified challenges. Method: To achieve this goal, we conducted an exploratory case study in Ericsson, a global technology company. We surveyed 94 women and employed mixed-methods to analyze the data. Results: Our findings reveal that women face socio-cultural challenges, including work-life balance issues, benevolent and hostile sexism, lack of recognition and peer parity, impostor syndrome, glass ceiling bias effects, the prove-it-again phenomenon, and the maternal wall. The participants of our research provided different suggestions to address/mitigate the reported challenges, including sabbatical policies, flexibility of location and time, parenthood support, soft skills training for managers, equality of payment and opportunities between genders, mentoring and role models to support career growth, directives to hire more women, inclusive groups and events, women's empowerment, and recognition for women's success. The framework of challenges and suggestions can inspire further initiatives both in academia and industry to onboard and retain women.

Abstract:The Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, Ahead of Print. Based on a symbolic–interpretive and social–constructivist research approach, this longitudinal study explores how employees perceive workspace changes. Rich empirical processual data that were continuously collected during the change process were used to analyze workspace changes as a new type of organizational change, thereby contributing to sensemaking research. Three types of change recipients from employees' responses to a workspace change based on differences in their underlying cognitive, behavioral, and affective patterns throughout the sensemaking process were identified: those with positive attitudes and perceptions, those with negative attitudes and perceptions, and those exhibiting a change toward positive attitudes and perceptions. As a practical contribution, change agents and leaders can gain insights and guidance for managing different employees by considering the individual patterns that trigger changes in employees' perceptions throughout the change process. These insights about sensemaking also contribute to organizational development and change management research.

In this paper, we use the "gender as a social structure" framework to assess macro-, interactional-, and micro-level mechanisms explaining the stalled revolution in gender ideologies. Using the European Values Study 2008 data and latent class analysis, we look at the spread of gender ideologies and examine their association with national levels of gendered ascription of work and care roles, work–family compatibility, social inequality and societal affluence, individual characteristics, and cross-level interactions with gender and education in 36 (post-)industrialized countries. By including a large number of Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern European countries, we provide a new and comprehensive picture of the gender ideology landscapes of Europe, reflected in two unidimensional classes—egalitarian and traditional—and four multidimensional classes, covering more than 60 percent of respondents—family oriented, choice egalitarian, intensive motherhood, and neotraditional. By modeling key features of macro-level variation, we show how the spread of gender ideologies is associated with distinct contextual conditions. We consolidate previous findings on multidimensional gender ideologies, which were based on fewer countries.

Abstract:Most research on gender and digital communication centers on how women use digital media, how they participate online, or how they are treated in online forums and social media. This article, in contrast, approaches gender from a behind the screen perspective. How algorithms and platforms are created, designed, and maintained, the affordances they provide for users and how they govern the ways users communicate with each other, has a major impact on digital communication. However, it is mostly men who create these technologies. Our study approaches technologies as socio-cultural, departing from the concept of network media logic. Empirically, it is based on (1) the review of a diverse body of literature from the history of programming, professional sociology, and computer science and documents such as the diversity reports from tech giants, as well as on (2) 64 semi-structured expert interviews conducted with male and female programmers in seven countries over a time-period of four years. Results show that the gender gap continues to run deep. We report results in four dimensions: professional culture, pervasive stereotypes, lack of role models and typical career paths.

Abstract:The era of technological change entails complex patterns of changes in wages and employment. We develop a unified framework to measure the contribution of technological change embodied in new capital to changes in the relative wages and income shares of different types of labor. We obtain the aggregate elasticities of substitution by estimating and aggregating sectoral production function parameters with cross-country and cross-industry panel data from OECD countries. We show that advances in information, communication, and computation technologies contribute significantly to narrowing the gender wage gap, widening the skill wage gap, and declining labor shares.

Abstract:Recent studies show that gender diversity in IT teams has a positive impact on the software development process. However, there is still a great gender inequality. The aim of our study was to examine how the working atmosphere depends on the gender differentiation of IT teams. The analysis of the results of the interviews and questionnaires showed that the atmosphere in gender-differentiated teams is more pleasant compared to purely male ones. The paper also discusses the problem of gender discrimination, which, according to the results of the study, unfortunately still exists and affects the working atmosphere. Finally, we looked at ways to reduce the gender inequity, where it turned out that soft approaches such as dedicated training, workshops to show the human face of the IT industry are preferred.

Are women journalists in leadership changing work conditions and newsroom culture?

Abstract:Journalism, Ahead of Print. Using standpoint epistemology and critical mass theory this study analyzes the potential impact on work culture and conditions in German newsrooms following a call for voluntary gender quotas in newsroom leadership. In-depth interviews with 53 journalists in 21 leading newsrooms in Germany find positive changes in work culture and conditions for all journalists in all newsrooms that reached or approached critical mass of women in leadership. Through the eyes of women and men working in these national newsrooms, an increase in women in newsrooms that came near or superseded the voluntary quota in leadership positions helped boost ongoing institutional support regarding paid parental leave and childcare options and augmented transparency around opportunities for mentoring, coaching, and hiring through more institutionalized processes. We recommend a continued implementation of voluntary quotas and further research to document and analyze long-term structural and systemic changes that more women in newsroom leadership could bring.

Investigating the Perceived Impact of Maternity on Software Engineering: a Women's Perspective

Abstract:Background: Several researchers report the impact of gender on software development teams, especially in relation to women. In general, women are under-represented on these teams and face challenges and difficulties in their workplaces. When it comes to women who are mothers, these challenges can be amplified and directly impact these women's professional lives, both in industry and academia. However, little is known about women ICT practitioners' perceptions of the challenges of maternity in their professional careers. Objective: This paper investigates mothers' challenges and difficulties in global software development teams. Method: We conducted a survey with women ICT practitioners who work in academia and global technology companies. We surveyed 141 mothers from different countries and employed mixed methods to analyze the data. Results: Our findings reveal that women face sociocultural challenges, including work-life balance issues, bad jokes, and moral harassment. Furthermore, few women occupy leadership positions in software teams, and most reported that they did not have a support network during and after maternity leave, feeling overloaded. The surveyed women suggested a set of actions to reduce the challenges they face in their workplaces, such as: i) changing culture; ii) creating a code of conduct for men; iii) more empathy; iv) creating childcare within companies; and v) creating opportunities/programs for women in the software industry and academia. Conclusion: Adding to the underrepresentation of ICT roles, women also face many challenges in one important phase of women's lives, maternity. Our findings explore these challenges and can help organizations in developing policies to minimize them. Furthermore, it can help raise awareness of co-workers and bosses, toward a more friendly and inclusive workplace.

Abstract:With the increasing attention non-binary people receive in Western societies, strategies of gender-fair language have started to move away from binary (only female/male) concepts of gender. Nevertheless, hardly any approaches to take these identities into account into machine translation models exist so far. A lack of understanding of the socio-technical implications of such technologies risks further reproducing linguistic mechanisms of oppression and mislabelling. In this paper, we describe the methods and results of a workshop on gender-fair language and language technologies, which was led and organised by ten researchers from TU Wien, St. Pölten UAS, FH Campus Wien and the University of Vienna and took place in Vienna in autumn 2021. A wide range of interest groups and their representatives were invited to ensure that the topic could be dealt with holistically. Accordingly, we aimed to include translators, machine translation experts and non-binary individuals (as "community experts") on an equal footing. Our analysis shows that gender in machine translation requires a high degree of context sensitivity, that developers of such technologies need to position themselves cautiously in a process still under social negotiation, and that flexible approaches seem most adequate at present. We then illustrate steps that follow from our results for the field of gender-fair language technologies so that technological developments can adequately line up with social advancements. ---- Mit zunehmender gesamtgesellschaftlicher Wahrnehmung nicht-binärer Personen haben sich in den letzten Jahren auch Konzepte von genderfairer Sprache von der bisher verwendeten Binarität (weiblich/männlich) entfernt. Trotzdem gibt es bislang nur wenige Ansätze dazu, diese Identitäten in maschineller Übersetzung abzubilden. Ein fehlendes Verständnis unterschiedlicher sozio-technischer Implikationen derartiger Technologien birgt in sich die Gefahr, fehlerhafte Ansprachen und Bezeichnungen sowie sprachliche Unterdrückungsmechanismen zu reproduzieren. In diesem Beitrag beschreiben wir die Methoden und Ergebnisse eines Workshops zu genderfairer Sprache in technologischen Zusammenhängen, der im Herbst 2021 in Wien stattgefunden hat. Zehn Forscher*innen der TU Wien, FH St. Pölten, FH Campus Wien und Universität Wien organisierten und leiteten den Workshop. Dabei wurden unterschiedlichste Interessensgruppen und deren Vertreter*innen breit gestreut eingeladen, um sicherzustellen, dass das Thema holistisch behandelt werden kann. Dementsprechend setzten wir uns zum Ziel, Machine-Translation-Entwickler*innen, Übersetzer*innen, und nicht-binäre Privatpersonen (als "Lebenswelt-Expert*innen") gleichberechtigt einzubinden. Unsere Analyse zeigt, dass Geschlecht in maschineller Übersetzung eine maßgeblich kontextsensible Herangehensweise erfordert, die Entwicklung von Sprachtechnologien sich vorsichtig in einem sich noch in Aushandlung befindlichen gesellschaftlichen Prozess positionieren muss, und flexible Ansätze derzeit am adäquatesten erscheinen. Wir zeigen auf, welche nächsten Schritte im Bereich genderfairer Technologien notwendig sind, damit technische mit sozialen Entwicklungen mithalten können.

Abstract:The increasing diversity of cultural backgrounds, migration status and age is shaping modern working life. Previous research demonstrated that the attitudes and competences of team members and leaders toward diversity play a crucial role in utilizing the potential of heterogeneous teams and preventing detrimental behavior and discrimination. But even though leaders appear to be key figures in the process of diversity management, their perception of diversity as well as related challenges and chances are poorly investigated. The current paper aims to contribute to the understanding of leaders’ perspective on and role in diversity management building on a comparative analysis of two explorative qualitative studies with 16 employees and 22 leaders. The overall research questions are how employees and leaders perceive diversity of culture and age from their specific point of view, which experiences are likely to contribute to their opinion on and perception of diversity and in how far do employees and leaders differ in these aspects. Participants come from the German sector of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), which is the most internationalized and least psychologically investigated sector in Germany. The results show that employees are aware of the topic of diversity in general but have poor competences in dealing with diversity in their daily work life. This seems to be associated with a lack of experience with intercultural interaction and a lack of support from the respective organizations/leaders. We further found that individuals with a migration background do not show any signs of stereotype threat rather than expressing a feeling of being isolated from employees without a migration background. By comparing perspectives of leaders and employees, the current study contributes to the understanding of the processes underlying the experiences of inequalities of migrants and experiences of intercultural miscommunication and faultlines of people without migration background. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
