Abstract:[1] In the paper “Crustal motion in the zone of the 1960 Chile earthquake: Detangling earthquake-cycle deformation and forearc-sliver translation” by K. Wang, Y. Hu, M. Bevis, E. Kendrick, R. Smalley Jr., R. B. Vargas, and E. Lauría (Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 8, Q10010, doi:10.1029/2007GC001721, 2007), in paragraph 8, two incorrect numbers were quoted in the following sentence: “The motion must have substantially slowed down from these rates, because the present margin-parallel component of the Nazca–South America motion is only about 9 mm/a according to geodetic observations [Angermann et al., 1999; Kendrick et al., 2003] or 11 mm/a according to the NUVEL-1a global plate motion model [DeMets et al., 1994].” The numbers 9 and 11 in this sentence should be replaced with 23 and 28, respectively. Accordingly, the phrase “about 75% of the margin-parallel component” in the Abstract should read “about 30% of the margin-parallel component.” This error has no effect on the data, modeling results, and conclusions presented in this paper.

Abstract:Large earthquakes occurring worldwide have long been recognised to be non Poisson distributed, so involving some large scale correlation mechanism, which could be internal or external to the Earth. Till now, no statistically significant correlation of the global seismicity with one of the possible mechanisms has been demonstrated yet. In this paper, we analyse 20 years of proton density and velocity data, as reported by the ISC-GEM catalogue. We found clear correlation between proton density and the occurrence of large earthquakes (M>5.8), with a time shift of one day. The significance of such correlation is very high, with probability to be wrong less than 10-5. The correlation increases with the magnitude threshold of the seismic catalogue. A tentative model explaining such a correlation is also proposed, in terms of the reverse piezoelectric effect induced by the applied electric field. This result opens new perspectives in seismological interpretations, as well as in earthquake forecast.

Reduced seismic activity after mega earthquakes

Abstract:Mainshocks are often followed by increased earthquake activity (aftershocks). According to the Omori-Utsu law, the rate of aftershocks decays as a power law over time. While aftershocks typically occur in the vicinity of the mainshock, previous studies have suggested that mainshocks can also trigger earthquakes in remote locations. Here we examine the earthquake rate in the days following mega-earthquakes (magnitude >= 7.5) and find that the rate is significantly lower beyond a certain distance from the epicenter compared to surrogate data. However, the remote earthquake rate after the strongest earthquakes (magnitude >= 8) can also be significantly higher than that of the rate based on surrogate data. Comparing our findings to the global ETAS model, we find that the model does not capture the earthquake rate found in the data, hinting at a potential missing mechanism. We suggest that the diminished earthquake rate is due the release of global energy/tension subsequent to substantial mainshock events. This conjecture holds the potential to enhance our comprehension of the intricacies governing post-seismic activity.

Phenomenological Analysis of D Meson Lifetimes

Abstract:The QCD-based operator-product-expansion technique is systematically applied to the study of charmed meson lifetimes. We stress that it is crucial to take into account the momentum of the spectator light quark of charmed mesons, otherwise the destructive Pauli-interference effect in $D^+$ decays will lead to a negative decay width for the $D^+$. We have applied the QCD sum rule approach to estimate the hadronic matrix elements of color-singlet and color-octet 4-quark operators relevant to nonleptonic inclusive $D$ decays. The lifetime of $D_s^+$ is found to be longer than that of $D^0$ because the latter receives a constructive $W$-exchange contribution, whereas the hadronic annihilation and leptonic contributions to the former are compensated by the Pauli interference. We obtain the lifetime ratio $\tau(D_s^+)/\tau(D^0)$ $\approx 1.08\pm 0.04$, which is larger than some earlier theoretical estimates, but still smaller than the recent measurements by CLEO and E791.

Abstract:Crustal deformation due to the 2016 earthquake sequence in Kumamoto, Japan, that culminated in a preceding earthquake of magnitude M6.5 and a subsequent M7.3 earthquake 28 hours later, caused stress perturbation on and around the causative Futagawa-Hinagu fault zone. Monitoring changes in seismicity pattern along this zone plays a role in understanding the process before and after major earthquakes. For this purpose, stress-dependent laws in statistical seismology can be used: the Gutenberg-Richter frequency-size law and the Omori-Utsu aftershock-decay law. We review the results obtained by using these laws in previous studies to show a zone of high stress near the eventual epicenters of the M6.5 and M7.3 earthquakes before the start of the Kumamoto sequence, and after it, showing a decreasing trend in stress along the Futagawa-Hinagu fault zone. Detailed analysis suggests aseismic slips along the causative fault zone. The aseismic preslip locally reduced stress just prior to the M7.3 earthquake near its epicenter. Recently, a system was proposed by Gulia and Wiemer (2019) that utilizes the Gutenberg-Richter frequency-size law to judge, immediately after a large earthquake, whether it was the mainshock or a foreshock to a future event. Based on the reviewed results and our new results, further research that takes into account the spatial variation of frequency-size distribution, allowing the exploration of the possibility of a local preslip of a future nearby earthquake, is needed to improve this system.
