Abstract:Understanding the factors governing the stability of fault slip is a crucial problem in fault mechanics 1,2,3 . The importance of fault geometry and roughness on fault-slip behaviour has been highlighted in recent lab experiments 4,5,6,7 and numerical models 8,9,10,11 , and emerging evidence suggests that large-scale complexities in fault networks have a vital role in the fault-rupture process 12,13,14,15,16,17,18 . Here we present a new perspective on fault creep by investigating the link between fault-network geometry and surface creep rates in California, USA. Our analysis reveals that fault groups exhibiting creeping behaviour show smaller misalignment in their fault-network geometry. The observation indicates that the surface fault traces of creeping regions tend to be simple, whereas locked regions tend to be more complex. We propose that the presence of complex fault-network geometries results in geometric locking that promotes stick-slip behaviour characterized by earthquakes, whereas simpler geometries facilitate smooth fault creep. Our findings challenge traditional hypotheses on the physical origins of fault creep explained primarily in terms of fault friction 19,20,21 and demonstrate the potential for a new framework in which large-scale earthquake frictional behaviour is determined by a combination of geometric factors and rheological yielding properties.

Abstract:Abstract We investigate fault friction from dynamic modeling of fault slip prior to and following the M w 6.0 earthquake which ruptured the Parkfield segment of the San Andreas Fault in 2004. The dynamic modeling assumes a purely rate‐strengthening friction law, with a logarithmic dependency on sliding rate: . The initial state of stress is explicitly taken into account, and afterslip is triggered by the stress change induced by the earthquake source model given a priori. We consider different initial stress states and two coseismic models, and invert for the other model parameters using a nonlinear inversion scheme. The model parameters include the reference friction μ * , the friction rate dependency characterized by the quantity a‐b , assumed to be either uniform or depth dependent. The model parameters are determined from fitting the transient postseismic geodetic signal measured at continuous GPS stations. Our study provides a view of frictional properties at the kilometers scale over the 0–15 km depth illuminated by the coseismic stress change induced by the Parkfield earthquake. The reference friction is estimated to be between 0.1 and 0.5. With independent a priori constraints on the amplitude of differential stress, the range of possible values narrows down to 0.1–0.17. The friction rate coefficient a‐b is estimated to be ∼ 10 − 3 − 10 − 2 with a hint that it increases upward from about 1–3 × 10 –3 at 3–7 km depth to about 4–7 × 10 –3 at 0–1 km depth. It is remarkable that our results are consistent with frictional properties measured on rock samples recovered from the fault zone thanks to the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth experiment. Abstract:Abstract The potential of faults to show earthquake‐generating slip instabilities depends not only on the intrinsic frictional properties of the fault zone, but also on the elasticity of the surrounding material. A velocity‐weakening fault is expected to show increasingly unstable frictional behavior with decreasing local elastic stiffness around the fault zone. Fault zone roughness can cause slip in the shear direction to be accompanied by fault‐normal movement, modulated by fault‐normal elastic properties, however these effects are poorly understood. Here, we systematically vary the stiffness surrounding the fault in both the shear‐parallel and fault‐normal directions, to investigate the origin of slip instabilities and changes in friction constitutive properties. We confirm the transition from stable sliding through slow slip to stick‐slip due to reduced fault‐parallel stiffness, and that the occurrence of different types of slip events can be explained by the ratio between shear and critical stiffness. In contrast, reducing the fault‐normal stiffness produces stick‐slip instabilities under conditions where the conventional critical stiffness criterion predicts stable sliding, and does not produce transitional slow slip events. Our data suggest that: (a) the stability criterion for frictional slip should be modified to incorporate fault‐normal stiffness, and (b) the unexpected slip instabilities may represent wrinkle‐like slip pulses, possibly due to a stiffness asymmetry introduced by lowering the fault normal stiffness on one side of the fault. This implies that earthquakes may occur when the fault‐normal stiffness, or bulk modulus for natural faults, is decreased and/or asymmetric across the fault zone, both of which may be common in nature.

Frictional Strength and Sliding Behaviors of an Analogue Rock-Fault Structure: A Laboratory Study

Abstract:Preexisting faults exert a dominant control on frictional strength and stability of crustal faults. However, the complex interplay between fault and host rocks and their influences on frictional behaviors of fault zones remain poorly known. Here, we mimic natural fault-rock binary structures with rock-gouge assemblages made of fractured granite with or without gouge sandwiched inside. Then, we quantitatively assessed the frictional strength and sliding stability of the granite fractures by performing velocity stepping (VS) and slide-hold-slide (SHS) experiments. The VS results reveal a positive relationship between friction coefficient and velocity jump, indicating a velocity strengthening behavior. Besides, friction coefficient of fractured granite is found to be susceptible to gouge thickness and fracture roughness, while it is less affected by normal stress. According to the SHS experiment, frictional healing (Δμ) is scaled logarithmically with hole time, this linear link is mainly caused by the logarithmic grow in contact area during the hold period. By comparing the pre- and post-shear surfaces, it is found that the fractures with rougher surface and thinner gouge layer suffer more severe damage in the post-shear surface, reflecting the dominant impacts of gouge and fracture roughness on the frictional sliding behaviors. Accordingly, three modes, namely fracture-surface-dominant, mix, and gouge-dominant modes, are proposed to characterize frictional sliding of fractured granite. Moreover, a threshold, termed as the critical gouge thickness, is identified based on frictional strength evolutions, exceeding of the critical gouge thickness will motivate the transitions of the sliding modes, and thus affect the frictional strength and stability. This study designed and conducted rock friction experiments, as a laboratory earthquake, on rock-gouge assemblages, the frictional strength and sliding stability of which were thoroughly explored, and therefore it shed light on the complex interplay of surrounding rocks with gouge in dominating the frictional properties of natural fault zones.

Abstract:The traction evolution is a fundamental ingredient to model the dynamics of an earthquake rupture which ultimately controls, during the coseismic phase, the energy release, the stress redistribution and the consequent excitation of seismic waves. In the present paper we explore the use of the friction behavior derived from laboratory shear experiments performed on granular materials at low normal stress. We find that the rheological properties emerging from these laboratory experiments can not be described in terms of preexisting governing models already presented in literature; our results indicate that neither rate-and state-dependent friction laws nor nonlinear slip-dependent models, commonly adopted for modeling earthquake ruptures, are able to capture all the features of the experimental data. Then, by exploiting a novel numerical approach, we directly incorporate the laboratory data into a code to simulate the fully dynamic propagation of a 3-D slip failure. We demonstrate that the rheology of the granular material, imposed as fault boundary condition, is dynamically consistent. Indeed, it is able to reproduce the basic features of a crustal earthquake, spontaneously accelerating up to some terminal rupture speed, both sub- and supershear.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the role of thermal pressurization in the frictional response of a fault under large coseismic slip. We investigate the role of the seismic slip velocity, mixture compressibility, characteristic grain size and viscosity parameter in the frictional response of the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical problem, taking into account the fault's microstructure. Starting from the mass, energy and momentum balance for Cosserat continua we derive the equations of our model. We complete the mathematical description using perfect plasticity and Perzyna viscoplasticity in the material constitutive behavior. We investigate both the rate independent as well as the rate dependent frictional response and compare with existing models found in literature, namely the rate and state friction law (Dieterich (1992),Ruina(1983a)). We show that our model is capable of predicting strain rate hardening and velocity softening without the assumption of a state variable. We observe traveling instabilities inside the layer that lead to oscillations in the fault's frictional response, like in the case of Portevin Le Chatelier (PLC) effect. This behavior is not captured by existing numerical analyses presented in Rattez et al. (2018c,b,a) and go beyond the established models of uniform shear (Lachenbruch (1980)) and shear on a mathematical plane (Rice (2006a)), which predict a strictly monotonous behavior during shearing. Recent experimental analyses, which have managed to insulate thermal pressurization from other weakening mechanisms (Badt et al. (2020)), corroborate our numerical results.

Coupling 3D geodynamics and dynamic earthquake rupture: fault geometry, rheology and stresses across timescales

Abstract:Tectonic deformation crucially shapes the Earth's surface, with strain localization resulting in the formation of shear zones and faults that accommodate significant tectonic displacement. Earthquake dynamic rupture models, which provide valuable insights into earthquake mechanics and seismic ground motions, rely on initial conditions such as pre-stress states and fault geometry. However, these are often inadequately constrained due to observational limitations. To address these challenges, we develop a new method that loosely couples 3D geodynamic models to 3D dynamic rupture simulations, providing a mechanically consistent framework for earthquake analysis. Our approach does not prescribe fault geometry but derives it from the underlying lithospheric rheology and tectonic velocities using the medial axis transform. We perform three long-term geodynamics models of a strike-slip geodynamic system, each involving different continental crust rheology. We link these with nine dynamic rupture models, in which we investigate the role of varying fracture energy and plastic strain energy dissipation in the dynamic rupture behavior. These simulations suggest that for our fault, long-term rheology, and geodynamic system, a plausible critical linear slip weakening distance falls within Dc in [0.6,1.5]. Our results indicate that the long-term 3D stress field favors slip on fault segments better aligned with the regional plate motion and that minor variations in the long-term 3D stress field can strongly affect rupture dynamics, providing a physical mechanism for arresting earthquake propagation. Our geodynamically informed earthquake models highlight the need for detailed 3D fault modeling across time scales for a comprehensive understanding of earthquake mechanics.

Abstract:Triaxial deformation is a general feature of continental tectonics, but its controls and the systematics of associated fault networks remain poorly understood. We present triaxial analog experiments mimicking crustal thinning resulting from distributed longitudinal extension and lateral shortening. Contemporary longitudinal extension and lateral shortening are related by the principal horizontal strain ratio (PHSR). We investigate the effect of crustal geometry, rheology and strain rate on deformation localization, faulting regime and pattern, and PHSR in brittle and brittle‐viscous crustal‐scale models. We find that in brittle models the fault networks reflect the basal boundary condition and fault‐density scales inversely with brittle layer thickness. Hydrodynamics of fault gouges from constitutive modelling to the physics of friction

Abstract:The development of rate- and state-dependent friction laws offered important insights into the key physical mechanisms of the frictional behaviour of fault gouges and their seismic cycle. However, past approaches were specifically tailored to address the problem of fault shearing, leaving questions about their ability to comprehensively represent the gouge material under general loading conditions. This work establishes an alternative approach for developing a physical friction law for fault gouges that is grounded on the rigour of the hydrodynamic procedure with two-scale temperatures through Terracotta, a thoroughly robust constitutive model for clay in triaxial loading conditions. By specifying the model for direct shearing, the approach yields an alternative friction law that readily captures the frictional dynamics of fault gouges, including explicit dependencies on gouge layer thickness, normal stress, and solid fraction. Validated against available laboratory experiments, the friction law retains the original predictive capabilities of Terracotta in triaxial conditions and explains the rate- and state-dependent, dilatational behaviour of fault gouges in direct shear conditions. Finally, when the Terracotta friction law is connected to a spring-dashpot representation of the host rock, the combined model predicts an elastic buildup precursor to the onset of and subsequent seismicity, with results closely reflecting experimental evidence and field observations. While this study focuses on clay-rich gouges, the approach and findings are expected to offer much wider implications to a variety of materials.

Abstract:Nearly all aspects of earthquake rupture are controlled by the friction along the fault that progressively increases with tectonic forcing, but in general cannot be directly measured. We show that fault friction can be determined at any time, from the continuous seismic signal. In a classic laboratory experiment of repeating earthquakes, we find that the seismic signal follows a specific pattern with respect to fault friction, allowing us to determine the fault's position within its failure cycle. Using machine learning, we show that instantaneous statistical characteristics of the seismic signal are a fingerprint of the fault zone shear stress and frictional state. Further analysis of this fingerprint leads to a simple equation of state quantitatively relating the seismic signal power and the friction on the fault. These results show that fault zone frictional characteristics and the state of stress in the surroundings of the fault can be inferred from seismic waves, at least in the laboratory.

Abstract:The knowledge on properties and dynamics of earthquakes and faults remains highly incomplete despite considerable research spanning over 100 years.The main difficulties stem from the limited resolution of the available observations, strongly nonlinear behavior and other complexities in the governing physics, along with existence of multiscale multi-phase (solid, granular, fluid) crustal heterogeneities.Recent theoretical and technique developments, novel laboratory experiments, dense seismic arrays, and other high quality data sets provide new opportunities for advancing the understanding of earthquakes and fault zones.These and related topics were discussed in a workshop titled ''Frontiers in Studies of Earthquakes and Faults'', conducted during Nov 27-Dec 1, 2017 at the Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China.The papers in this topical issue are based on presentations given at the workshop and additional contributions, and they describe the stateof-the-art in several key frontiers.Topics covered in this volume include analysis of earthquake source properties, models of dynamic ruptures and slow slip events, imaging fault zones and the crust, detection of small earthquakes, high-resolution results from laboratory fracturing experiments, quantifying temporal changes of seismic properties, inversions of focal mechanisms to stress and more.
Numerical investigation of frictional heating effect on the earthquake faulting based on the Ruina- and Chester-Higgs- models

Abstract:<p>Rate- and state-dependent friction laws (RSF laws) are empirical laws derived from laboratory experiments related to rock friction. They have been used to quantitatively describe complex fault friction processes. With a combination of the RSF laws and the McKenzie-Brune frictional heat generation model, we have studied the effects of frictional heating processs on the fault strength variation and temporal evolution of temperature based on the spring-slider-fault system subjected to Ruina and Chester-Higgs RSF laws. The system equations are solved efficiently by Dormand-Prince method with adaptive steps. First, with a comparison to the Ruina- model in which the temperature effect due to frictional heating on frictional strength is neglected, the numerical results show that the fault will be unstable slightly earlier for the Chester-Higgs- model in which the temperature effect due to frictional heating on frictional strength is taken into consideration, which indicates that the rise of temperature caused by frictional heating can lead to a slight time advance of fault instability. Second, by contrast with Ruina- model, the frictional strength will keep a little bit higher for the Chester-Higgs- model when the fault sliding at high speed, indicating that frictional heat can strengthen faults to a certain extent. Third, the simulation results also suggest that, at the same rupture velocity, the temperature change for the Chester-Higgs- model is much smaller than that given by the Ruina- model, indicating that frictional heat can also restrain the sharp rise of temperature on fault surface. In addition, under the same parameters and initial conditions, the seismic occurrence time giving by the Chester-Higgs- model is obviously shorter than that by the Ruina- model, indicating that a significant effect of friction heating generated on entire fault temporal evolution could greatly reduce the seismic recurrence time. Correspondingly, both static stress drop and total slip resulted from the Chester-Higgs- model is also smaller than that from the Ruina- model, respectively.</p>
