Abstract:A method for the direct one-pot synthesis of amine-stabilized gold nanoparticles using 3-(trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine (TMSP dien) is described. The amine groups of this bifunctional molecule act as a stabilizer for gold nanoparticles as they form by reduction of HAuCl4. Highly stable gold nanoparticles with sizes tunable between 8 and 20 nm can be readily obtained. This method is quite simple to implement and environmentally benign as there is no need to add an external reducing reagent. The incorporated siloxy functionality was subsequently used to form a silica shell around the gold particle.

Abstract:Here, we first report a facile one-step one-phase synthetic route to achieve size-controlled gold micro/nanoparticles with narrow size distribution by using o-diaminobenzene as a reducing agent in the presence of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) via a simple wet-chemical approach. All experimental data including that from scanning-electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques indicates that the gold micro/nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution were produced in high yield (approximately 100%).

Abstract:Shape-controlled gold nanostructures were successfully synthesized in an aqueous solution by a one-step, non-templated thermal reduction method through heating of a poly(vinylpyrrolidone)/HAuCl4 aqueous solution. Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) serves. as both the stabilizing surfactant and reducing agent for the controlled synthesis of gold nanostructures with different shapes. Upon adjusting the chain-length and the concentration of the PVP, decahedral, icosahedral and platelike gold nanostructures with dominating distribution were fabricated, respectively, with the ratio of terminating OH groups at the polymer to Au ions as an important experimental parameter. The results suggest that the morphology of the gold nanostructures could be tuned by this method. The successful preparation of gold nanostructures exemplifies a very facile, effective, and generic strategy for fabrication of gold nanoparticles with various shapes.
Guiding the High-Yield Synthesis of NHC-Ligated Gold Nanoclusters by 19F NMR Spectroscopy

Abstract:Optimizing the synthesis of atomically precise metal nanoclusters by virtue of molecular tools is highly desirable but quite challenging. Herein we report how 19F NMR spectroscopy can be used to guide the high-yield synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-stabilized gold nanoclusters. In spite of little difference, 19F NMR signals of fluoro-incorporated NHCs (FNHC) are highly sensitive to the tiny change in their surrounding chemical environments with different N-substituents, metals, or anions, thus providing a convenient strategy to discriminate species in reaction mixtures. By using 19F NMR, we first disclosed that the one-pot reduction of FNHC-Au-X (X is halide) yields multiple compounds, including cluster compounds and also a large amount of highly stable [Au(FNHC)2]+ byproduct. The detailed quantitative 19F NMR analyses over the reductive synthesis of NHC-stabilized Au nanoclusters reveal that the formation of the di-NHC complex is deleterious to the high-yield synthesis of NHC-stabilized Au nanoclusters. With the understanding, the reaction kinetic was then slowed by controlling the reduction rate to achieve the high yield of a [Au24(FNHC)14X2H3]3+ nanocluster with a unique structure. The strategy demonstrated in this work is expected to provide an effective tool to guide the high-yield synthesis of organic ligand-stabilized metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:Multifunctional hybrid silica nanoparticles with a fluorescent core and tunable organic or polymeric shell can easily be prepared by a sol-gel process followed by 1,3 dipolar cycloaddition (CuAAC) in the same reverse quaternary W/O microemulsion. Compared to a classical multistep process, this one-pot synthesis reduces greatly the number of purification steps and avoids aggregation phenomena. The confinement of reactants inside the micellar system gives rise to a noticeable increase of the CuAAC reaction rate. In addition, using simultaneously two different substrates for CuAAC on silica allows us to obtain directly multifunctional hybrid nanoparticles displaying a double grafting without any separation or purification steps except the final recovery by centrifugation, which opens the door to a tunable coating of the nanoparticles. Particularly, the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of the coating can be adjusted by implementing the pertinent MPEG:dodecyl azide ratio. As an application, the great versatility of this strategy has been proved by the one-pot synthesis of fluorescent silica nanoparticles with a PEG coating and encapsulating silver clusters.

Abstract:A facile one-pot method has been developed to synthesize uniform gold@mesoporous silica nanospheres (Au@MSNs), which have a well-defined core-shell structure with ordered mesoporous silica as a shell. The resulting Au@MSNs have a high surface area (∼521 m2/g) and uniform pore size (∼2.5 nm) for the mesoporous silica shell. The diameter of the gold core can be regulated by adjusting the amount of HAuCl4. The catalytic performance of the Au@MSNs was investigated using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as a model reaction. The mesopores of the silica shells provide direct access for the reactant molecules to diffuse and subsequently interact with the gold cores. In addition, the Au@MSNs display the great advantage of sintering-resistance to 950 °C because the mesoporous silica shells inhibit aggregation or deformation of the gold cores. The high thermal stability enables the Au@MSNs to be employed in high-temperature catalytic reactions.

Atomically Precise Preorganization of Open Metal Sites on Gold Nanoclusters with High Catalytic Performance

Abstract:Gold nanoclusters with surface open sites are crucial for practical applications in catalysis. We have developed a surface geometric mismatch strategy by using mixed ligands of different type of hindrance. When bulky phosphine Ph3 P and planar dipyridyl amine (Hdpa) are simultaneously used, steric repulsion between the ligands will reduce the ligand coverage of gold clusters. A well-defined access granted gold nanocluster [Au23 (Ph3 P)10 (dpa)2 Cl](SO3 CF3 )2 (Au23 , dpa=dipyridylamido) has been successfully synthesized. Single crystal structural determination reveals that Au23 has eight uncoordinated gold atoms in the shape of a distorted bicapped triangular prism. The accessibility of the exposed Au atoms has been confirmed quantitatively by luminescent titration with 2-naphthalenethiol. This cluster has excellent performance toward selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and demonstrates excellent stability due to the protection of negatively charged multidentate ligand dpa.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of Au nanoparticles with adjustable sizes (10−50 nm) and narrow size distributions (<10% in standard deviation) was realized by reducing hydrochloroauric acid with α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) in an alkaline aqueous solution, which was very simple and “green”. It was revealed that a proper pH was essential to the formation of stable dispersions of nonaggregated Au nanoparticles and a higher pH would lead to the welding of the Au nanoparticles into one-dimensional (1D) wires or three-dimensional (3D) aggregates. Moreover, 1D assembly of α-CD-capped Au nanoparticles into nanochains was readily induced by partial removal of the organic stabilization shell, which resulted from the host−guest interactions between α-CDs capped on Au nanoparticle surfaces and toluene molecules. Abstract:A two-step, one-pot synthesis of fused pyrroles is realized by firstly condensing an N-alkynylhydroxammonium salt with a readily enolizable ketone under mild basic conditions and then subjecting the reaction mixture to a gold catalyst, which triggers a cascade reaction involving a facile initial [3.3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of the gold-catalysis product, that is, an N,O-dialkenylhydroxamine. The reaction provides a facile access to polycyclic pyrroles in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:Amine monofunctional gold nanoparticles (1-AuNPs) were synthesized by employing a solid-supported technique and pH-switchable pseudorotaxane formation. Purification was repeatedly facilitated using crown ether peripherally coated superparamagnetic iron oxide microspheres to yield the monofunctional gold nanoparticles in excellent yield. The product and its related intermediate superstructures were characterized by IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Novel supramolecular dimers and trimers were prepared by titrating the 1-AuNPs with bisDB24C8 and trisDB24C8 at different ratios. UV/visible absorption spectroscopic analyses of the supramolecular dimer and trimer solutions, which were formed by mixing their separate components in different ratios, indicated the gradual appearance of two distinct plasmonic resonance bands at 620 and approximately 700 nm. Furthermore, TEM images of the dimers revealed a significant amount of dimer pairs on the surface, while the TEM images of the trimers demonstrated the presence of both dimers and trimers. The trimers appeared as triangular or near-linear shapes.

Abstract:A highly efficient and selective reaction for the synthesis of 2-substituted benzoxazoles and benzimidazoles catalyzed by Au/TiO2 has been developed via two hydrogen-transfer processes. This reaction has a good tolerance to air and water, a wide substrate scope, and represents a new avenue for practical C-N and C-O bond formation. More importantly, no additional additives, oxidants and reductants are required for the reaction and the catalyst can be recovered and reused readily.

Abstract:Poly(ortho-toluidine) (POT)-gold (Au) and palladium (Pd) composite nanospheres were successfully synthesized by the reaction of o-toluidine with the corresponding metal (Au or Pd) colloidal solution through self-assembly process in the presence of dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA), which acts as both a dopant and surfactant, and ammonium peroxydisulfate as an oxidizing agent. The composites (POT-DBSA/Au or Pd) were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and electrical conductivity measurements. TEM images of the nanocomposites reveal that metal (Au or Pd) nanoparticles were well dispersed on POT spheres. TGA and XRD results show that the composites exhibit high thermal stability and are more crystalline compared with pristine POT. It was found that the electrical conductivity of the POT-DBSA/Au or Pd composites is 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of pristine polymer. Also, the POT-DBSA/Pd composite exhibits magnetic property. The formation mechanism of the POT-DBSA/Au or Pd composite nanosphere is discussed.

Abstract:In this study, TiO2−Bis[TMS−NH2+ C(NO2)3−] as an efficient, heterogeneous and recyclable nano‐catalyst was introduced, then, the catalytic activity of this reagent was investigated in the promotion of the synthesis of 1,2,4‐triazolo[4,3‐a]pyrimidines. In the current study, N1‐N4‐bis (3‐(trimethoxysilyl) propyl) butane‐1,4‐diammonium trinitromethanide on titanium dioxide {TiO2−Bis [TMS−NH2+ C(NO2)3−]} was synthesized and characterized using a variety of techniques including energy dispersive X‐ray analysis (EDX), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). Then TiO2−Bis [TMS−NH2+ C(NO2)3−] was used as an efficient nano‐catalyst in the one‐pot synthesis of 1,2,4‐triazolo[4,3‐a] pyrimidine derivatives at 120 °C under the solvent‐free conditions with good to excellent yields. Easy separation of the products from the catalyst, short period of the reaction times, and reusability of the catalyst are among the most important features of the reported method.

Abstract:Metallic alloy nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit interesting optical, electrical and catalytic properties, dependent on their size, shape and composition. In particular, silver–gold alloy NPs are widely applied as model systems to better understand the syntheses and formation (kinetics) of alloy NPs, as the two elements are fully miscible. Our study targets product design via environmentally friendly synthesis conditions. We use dextran as the reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of homogeneous silver–gold alloy NPs at room temperature. Our approach is a one-pot, low temperature, reaction-controlled, green and scalable synthesis route of well-controlled composition and narrow particle size distribution. The composition over a broad range of molar gold contents is confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDX) measurements and auxiliary inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy measurements (ICP-OES). The distributions of the resulting particles in size and composition are obtained from multi-wavelength analytical ultracentrifugation using the optical back coupling method and further confirmed by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Finally, we provide insight into the reaction kinetics during the synthesis, discuss the reaction mechanism and demonstrate possibilities for scale-up by a factor of more than 250 by increasing the reactor volume and NP concentration.
