Abstract:Two kinds of acrylate-modified polyesters were synthesized, one of the two is semi-crystalline while the other is amorphous, and the UV-curable powder coatings with two components can be made up by mixing these two kinds of polyesters in different ratios. Experiments show that the introduction of semi-crystalline polyester into the coating will substantially improve the direct and reverse impact resistance and the crosshatch adhesion of the cured film while the other general properties of the UV-curable powder coatings remain excellent.

Abstract:Styrene/butyl acrylate/crosslinker emulsion copolymerization was studied using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as emulsifier, potassium persulfate (KPS) as initiator and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and polybutadiene rubber (PB) as crosslinker. Effects of monomers ratio, reaction temperature, emulsifier concentration and initiator concentration on the rate of copolymerization were investigated. Experimental results showed that overall apparent activation energy of the copolymerization system was 70.67 kJ/mol, the rate of copolymerization had a direct ratio to power of 0.43 of emulsifier, power of 0.56 of initiator as well as power of 0.49 of monomer butyl acrylate.

Abstract:We report the recent progress in the preparation of functional poly(disubstituted acetylene)s (PDSAs) through post-polymerization modification routes. The metathesis polymerization of disubstituted acetylene monomers activated by Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts, which do not tolerate highly polar functionalities, was assumed to be a key step in the polymer synthetic procedures. We and other groups have explored several approaches to prepare PDSAs with latent reactive functionalities, which are inactive to Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts but can be used as highly reactive sites for post-polymerization modification. Click chemistry, Michael-type addition reactions, the use of activated esters and other strategies are demonstrated by recently published examples. These works indicate that post-polymerization modification is an efficient route to the synthesis of various functional PDSAs.

Abstract:Two disubstituted acetylenes bearing a vinyl group at one end (M1 and M2) were synthesized and polymerized by WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst. The expected poly(disubstituted acetylenes) PDSAs (P1 and P2) were obtained in high yields. Both P1 and P2 have reactive vinyl groups on their side chains, thus they were used as precursors to be subsequently modified with a mercapto compound through the thiol-ene click reaction to produce the novel PDSAs (P1S and P2S) in good yield. The chemical structures of the polymers were carefully characterized by standard spectroscopic methods such as gel permeation chromatography (GPC), NMR, NMR and FTIR techniques, and satisfactory data were collected. The post-polymerization modification of P1 took a long reaction time (3 days) to convert P1 to P1S because the ene-functionality at the end of side chain of P1 links to a saturated alkyl segment. By using an activated ene-functionality (alpha,beta-unsaturated vinyl), the modification of P2 to P2S took only 1 day under mild conditions. Moreover, the activated end-ene group allowed the post-polymerization modification of P2 by Michael addition, which was confirmed using butylamine as the representative amine compound and the characterization data indicated the validity of the expected P2N. The thermal analysis results indicated that the modified polymers were highly stable thermally with a decomposition temperature over at least 240 degrees C, except for P2N, which showed lower stability due to unstable imine groups. Meanwhile, it was found that the modified polymers P1S and P2S were fluorescent and showed similar emission efficiency to their precursors P1 and P2. These results indicated that the thiol-ene click reaction and Michael addition reaction are accessible routes for post-polymerization modification to generate novel functional PDSAs.

Abstract:The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp(3))-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp(3))-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp(3))-H activation was successfully established. Regio-and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M-w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp(3))-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.

Abstract:A two-step polymerization and grafting-crosslinking reaction was developed for modification of polystyrene. Styrene was first polymerized in dichloroethane at 25°C using SnCl4 as catalyst. The cationically prepared polystyrene was then grafted with 1,4-dimethyl-2,5-dichloromethyl benzene in dichloroethane at 50°C in a Friedel-Crafts reaction system. The kinetics of the reaction were followed by titrating the evolved HCI from the reaction system. The maximum reaction rate was found to vary with both the initial concentration of 1,4-dimethyl-2,5-dichloromethyl benzene and the initial concentration of SnCl4. Determination of the concentration of junctions of the grafted polystyrene samples and analysis of their u.v. spectra were used to determine the progress of the reaction, and to propose a reaction mechanism.

Abstract:Carbene-involving cross-coupling reactions of N-tosylhydrazones and arylbromides have been introduced into polymer chemistry for the first time, providing a novel method to access a new type of cross-conjugated polymer, poly(arylene-1,1-vinylidene) s (isoPAVs). The pendant double bonds of these cross-conjugated polymers allow for further post-polymerization functionalization. The good thermal stability and remarkable optical properties of these cross-conjugated polymers reveal their potential for applications.

Abstract:We report a new synthetic strategy to derive functional poly(disubstituted acetylenes) (PDSAs) through "phenol-yne click reaction". The phenol-containing PDSA was prepared by the polymerization of the triisopropylsilane (TIPS)-protected 4-((4- fluorophenyl) ethynyl) phenol monomer and by a subsequent deprotection step. Then, different functional groups (e. g., ester and amide) were grafted onto the PDSA side chains via the highly efficient "phenol-yne click reaction". Thepost-polymerization modification was carried out under mild conditions (at 40 degrees C, in common solvent) under an air atmosphere for a short time (4 h).The structures of the products were well characterized by GPC, NMR, and FTIR techniques and satisfactory data were collected. The data indicated that the phenol groups on the precursor PDSA were highly active to react with activated acetylenic compounds bearing functional groups intolerable to direct polymerization. This is the first example of the preparation of phenol-containing PDSA and the use of it as a precursor to prepare functional PDSAs. Besides the activated ester, thiol-ene click reaction, Michael addition reaction and Cu(I) catalysed alkyne-azide click reaction, we added a new tool in the tool-box for the synthesis of functional polymers.

Abstract:Synthesis of olefin–styrene copolymers with defined architecture is challenging due to the limitations associated with the inherent reactivity ratios for these monomers in radical or metal-catalyzed polymerizations. Herein, we developed a straightforward approach to alternating styrene–propylene and styrene–ethylene copolymers by combining radical polymerizations and powerful post-polymerization modification reactions. We employed reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization between styrene derivatives and saccharin (meth)acrylamide to generate alternating copolymers. Once polymerized, the amide bond of the saccharin monomers was highly reactive toward hydrolysis, an observation exploited to obtain alternating styrene–acrylic acid/methacrylic acid copolymers. Subsequent mild decarboxylation of the (meth)acrylic acid groups in the presence of a photocatalyst and a hydrogen source under visible light resulted in the styrene- alt -ethylene/propylene copolymers. Alternating copolymers comprised of either propylene or ethylene units alternating with functional styrene derivatives were also prepared, illustrating the compatibility of this approach for functional polymer synthesis. Finally, the thermal properties of the alternating copolymers were compared to those from statistical copolymer analogs to elucidate the effect of microarchitecture and styrene substituents on the glass transition temperature.

Abstract:While the synthesis of conjugated polymers has received significant attention, the preparation of cross-conjugated polymers, where the pi-electron delocalization cannot extend along the backbone, has received much less success. We have exploited a new catalytic polymerization process and developed the Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling enabled synthesis of cross conjugated polymers with readily accessible N-tosylhydrazones and aryl halides. A broad scope of cross-conjugated polymers with good processability and thermal stability has been prepared in high yields using dialkylbiarylphospine-Pd precatalysts. Owing to their unique vinyl structures, these polymers could be easily modified in postpolymerization fashions to impart high degrees of structural complexities. Moreover, these materials were shown to have interesting and tunable optical and conductive properties, featuring their great potentials in a variety of applications.

Abstract:The Pd-catalyzed carbene coupling reaction of N-tosylhydrazones and benzyl bromides has been developed into a polymerization process for the first time, providing an efficient method for the synthesis of poly(arylene vinylene)s (PAVs). This method affords PAVs bearing E-vinylene units predominantly. It can also introduce a CF3 group on each vinylene carbon atom in the polymer main chain. The polymerization has a broad scope and the resultant polymers exhibit interesting optical properties and good thermal stabilities.

Abstract:Photocatalytic [2 + 2] cycloaddition is a useful tool for the synthesis of cyclobutane derivatives, which contributes a large part to natural compound production. Usually, the [2 + 2] cycloadditions are catalyzed by transition-metal complexes. Here, we report the use of a pure organic photocatalyst based on a conjugated microporous polymer network for the [2 + 2] cycloaddition of styrene derivatives under the irradiation of visible light. Both unsymmetrical and homocycloaddition could be obtained with high conversion and selectivity. In addition, natural products, such as di-O-methylendiandrin A and endiandrin A are also synthesized with a high catalytic efficiency.

Abstract:Living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and a fluorescent comonomer with 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid 3-azidopropyl ester and 2-bromo-2-methylhept-6-yn-3-one as initiators has been successfully employed for the synthesis of fluorescently tagged azide and alkyne terminated PMMA with close to that predicted, PDI < 1.20, and good first order kinetics as expected for a living polymerisation. Cotton and organic resin surfaces have been functionalised with alkyne groups using a condensation with 4-chlorocarbonylbutyric acid prop-2-ynyl ester. The surfaces have been further modified using a Huisgen [2 + 3] cycloaddition ("click") reaction of polymeric and small molecule azides. Different functional azides, mono azido-PEG and a new fluorescent hostasol derivative have been prepared and tested as model substrates for cotton surface modification. FTIR, tensiometry, FE-SEM and confocal spectroscopy have been used to characterize the modified surfaces. Tensiometry shows an increase in the hydrophobicity of the surface; verified by FE-SEM which shows a change in surface morphology. The use of the fluorescence label allows fluorescent and confocal microscopy to demonstrate the surface reactions. This approach is shown to be very general allowing soft and hard surfaces with different geometries to be modified. In particular it is an excellent method to alter the nature of organic resins allowing the incorporation of many different functionalities.

Abstract:Polyfurans (PFus) are a type of conjugated polymer but have usually been considered to be inherently unstable and poorly processable. In this work, the multicomponent cyclopolymerization (MCC) of diisocyanide, dialkylacetylene dicarboxylates, and dialdehyde was developed to prepare modified PFus under mild conditions with catalyst-free one-pot reactions. The approach afforded high molecular weight poly(amine–furan–arylene)s (PAFAs) (M w up to 76400), which contained 3,4-substituted furan that in situ formed during the polymerization, with good thermal stability and film-processing properties. All the experimental conditions such as molar ratio of monomers, polymerization solvents and temperature, monomer structures, and reactivity were investigated in detail. PAFAs’ structures were well characterized by GPC, FTIR, and NMR. One of the PAFAs carrying dimethylbenzene moieties exhibited the characteristics of a black material. Thus, this MCC provides a new method to modify PFus with a variety of functional groups of main and/or side chains.

Abstract:Photoresponsive polymers have attracted increasing attention. Herein, we designed and synthesized a photoresponsive liquid crystal polymer (LCP). The LCP was prepared through the copolymerization of a styrylpyrene‐containing photoresponsive monomer and a monomer containing mesogen 4‐cyanophenyl benzoate. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) curve and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectrum confirmed that the LCP was successfully synthesized. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry curves showed that the LCP had high thermal stability, with a decomposition temperature at 5% weight loss of 305°C, and Tg and Ti of 46 and 128°C, respectively. Polarized optical microscopy studies suggested that thermal annealing promoted the orientation of the LCP films. Model compounds containing styrylpyrene units showed photo‐controlled dimerization. Furthermore, the dimerization of the styrylpyrene units could control the crosslinking densities in the LCP, thereby regulating the network structures and properties. These properties demonstrate that the LCP is a promising photoresponsive material.

Abstract:Styrene (St)/n-butyl acrylate (BA) copolymers were prepared by two-stage polymerization: St/BA was pre-polymerized to a viscous state by bulk polymerization with initiation by benzoyl peroxide (BPO) followed by 60Co γ-ray radiation curing. The resultant copolymers had higher molecular weight and narrower molecular weight distribution than conventional methods. After incorporation of ultra-fine powdered styrene–butadiene rubber (UFSBR) with a particle size of 100nm in the monomer, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of St–BA copolymer increased at low rubber content. Both the St–BA copolymer and the St–BA copolymer/UFSBR composites had good transparency at BA content below 40%.
