Abstract:We report the first example of realizing the multi-functionalization of photodegradable polymers for the preparation of reactive micropatterns. Three o-nitrobenzaldehyde monomers (M1, M2, and M3) with ally!, propargyl, and epoxy groups were synthesized in high yields by the simple reactions of 5-hydroxy-2-nitro-benzaldehyde with ally! bromide, propargyl bromide, and epichlorohydrin, respectively. Passerini multicomponent polymerization (Passerini MCP) of M1, M2, or M3 with 1,6-hexanedioic acid and 1,6-diisocyanohexane generated three poly(ester-amide)s (P1, P2, and P3), the ester linkages of which were o-nitrobenzyl derivatives with functional groups from the corresponding monomers. Therefore, these polymers are photodegradable and can also be further modified by efficient click reactions like thiol-ene, copper catalyzed azide- alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), and epoxy amine reaction. Furthermore, Passerini MCP of M1, M2, and M3 with 1,6-hexanedioic acid and 1,6-diisocyanohexane could yield a photodegradable triply functional polymer (P4) containing all the three functional side groups which can be further modified by sequential click reactions. All the polymers were thoroughly characterized by H-1 NMR and GPC. Degradation of the polymers in solution under UV irradiation was investigated by UV vis and GPC, and they can all be photocleaved into oligomers and small molecules in 30 min. These functional polymers are extremely useful as positive photoresists to create reactive micropatterns. As an example, the triply functional polymer film was fabricated and cross-linked by epoxy amine reaction. After photoirradiation under a mask, reactive patterns with allyl and propargyl groups were obtained. Sequential modification of the reactive sites by CuAAC and thiol-ene reactions afforded multifunctional patterned surfaces with tunable properties as confirmed by scanning electron micrograph (SEM) and confocal fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract:We report a facile method for the synthesis of multi-block copolymers consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(ester-amide) segments with an ordered side group sequence via multicomponent polymerization based on the Passerini reaction (PR). The technique involves the polymer supported liquid-phase synthesis of three PEG diacid macromonomers (M1-M3) via stepwise PR with tert-butyl isocyanoacetate and a functional aldehyde followed by selective hydrolysis, and the final multicomponent polymerization of M1-M3 with phenylacetaldehyde and 1,6-diisocyanohexane.

Abstract:Multicomponent polymerizations have become powerful tools for the construction of sequence-defined polymers. Although the Passerini multicomponent reaction has been widely used in the synthesis of sequence-defined polymers, the tandem usage of the Passerini multicomponent reaction and other multicomponent reactions in one-pot for the synthesis of sequence-defined polymers has not been developed until now. In this contribution, we report the tandem usage of the Passerini three-component reaction and the three-component amine-thiol-ene conjugation reaction in one pot for the synthesis of sequence-defined polymers. The Passerini reaction between methacrylic acid, adipaldehyde, and 2-isocyanobutanoate was carried out, affording a new molecule containing two alkene units. Subsequently, an amine and a thiolactone were added to the reaction system, whereupon the three-component amine-thiol-ene conjugating reaction occurred to yield a sequence-defined polymer. This method offers more rapid access to sequence-defined polymers with high molecular diversity and complexity.

Abstract:Multicomponent polymerization based on Passerini reaction is described. Room temperature polymerization of dicarboxyl acid, monoaldehyde, and diisocyanide leads to the formation of a new type of sequence regulated poly(ester-amide)s in an efficient one-pot process. The polymerization was confirmed to be a stepwise mechanism, and the resulting polymers were characterized and determined to be linear polymers with a sequence regulated backbone repeating unit of esteresteramideamide. When functional aldehydes were used, functional side groups could be easily introduced at the same time, providing a simple way for further modification.

Abstract:The present work describes a facile approach to sequence-regulated polymers via a combination of orthogonal Passerini three-component reaction and thiol-ene reaction. The first step was the synthesis of an am-diene compound via the Passerini three-component reaction of 1, 6-diisocyanohexane with 10-undecylenic acid and a monoaldehyde. In the second step, thiol-ene reaction of this diene compound with 3-mercaptopropionic acid converted the dienes to dicarboxylic acids. Finally, these dicarboxylic acid monomers were copolymerized with 1, 6-diisocyanohexane and another monoaldehyde to get polymers, each repeating unit of which contains four different side groups in an AABB sequence.

Abstract:A new polymerization method based on the Passerini three‐component reaction of a dicarboxylic acid, an alcohol, and a diisocyanide in the presence of an oxidant is reported. This polymerization involves the concurrent oxidation of alcohols by o‐iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) and the Passerini three‐component polymerization. The kinetics of the alcohol oxidation and the Passerini reaction are investigated, and the results indicate that the cascade process can occur efficiently. The reaction conditions are optimized, and various functional alcohols are examined to get insight into the applicability of the method. Based on the optimized conditions, a variety of functional poly(ester amide)s are prepared in a one‐pot fashion via using 1,6‐diisocyanohexane, 1,6‐hexanedioic acid, different functional alcohols, and iodoxybenzoic acid. The introduction of functional pendant groups, especially alkynyl, alkenyl and epoxy groups, to the final poly(ester amide)s, provides an efficient way for further modification of the polymers. image

Abstract:We report a facile 'grafting from' approach to graft copolymers with polyamide backbones and controlled vinyl polymer or polyester side chains. Two polyamides with in situ-formed pendant bromide or hydroxyl groups were obtained by Passerini-based multicomponent polymerization. They were used respectively to initiate the atom-transfer radical polymerization of vinyl monomers or the ring-opening polymerization of lactones to generate two new types of graft copolymers. One of the important features of the method is that the pendant initiators are generated in situ from non-branching monomers, and they are linked to the polymer backbone by ester bonds. Therefore, the vinyl polymer side chains could be detached from the backbones, and their structures could thus be fully characterized. Moreover, multicomponent polymerization and atom-transfer radical polymerization can even be carried out in a one-pot manner.

Abstract:Exploring new polymerization strategy for current available monomers is a big challenge in polymer science.Here we re-investigate radical polymerization of monovinyl monomer(MVM)initiated by uniform branched polyfunctional initiator(PFI),which is termed non-linear radical additions-coupling polymerization(NLRAsCP).In NLRAsCP,both addition and coupling reactions of radical contribute to the construction of the polymer chains,which leads to continuous growth of branch topology.Theoretical analysis of NLRAsCP predicts that the gelation is determined by the functionality of PFI(a),the extent of initiation of the PFI(q)and the termination factor of radical(φ).NLRAsCPs of styrene and methyl methacrylate promoted by Cu(0)/Me6TREN or Mn2(CO)10/visible light were conducted.After the cleavage of incorporated PFI fragment or junctions in the network,the network was transformed to linear chains having almost the same structure as segmental chains in the precursor network.This allows the reverse deducing the network structure from its cleaved products.It has been proven that NLRAsCP includes stepwise initiation of PFI,chain-growth of segmental chains and successive endlinking of macroradicals derived from PFI.The three parameters related to the gelation process,a,q and φ,were adjusted via binary PFI,the feed ratio of[Mn2(CO)10]/[PFI]and addition of non-homopolymerizable comonomer respectively.The minimum values of a and q,and the minimum amount of comonomer required for gelation were determined,which can be applied to estimate φ of various macroradicals.NLRAsCP opens a general and facile strategy for synthesis of a variety of polymer networks with heritable architecture by one-pot polymerization of various MVMs.
Synthesis of Functional Poly(disubstituted Acetylene)s Through the Post-Polymerization Modification Route.

Abstract:We report the recent progress in the preparation of functional poly(disubstituted acetylene)s (PDSAs) through post-polymerization modification routes. The metathesis polymerization of disubstituted acetylene monomers activated by Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts, which do not tolerate highly polar functionalities, was assumed to be a key step in the polymer synthetic procedures. We and other groups have explored several approaches to prepare PDSAs with latent reactive functionalities, which are inactive to Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts but can be used as highly reactive sites for post-polymerization modification. Click chemistry, Michael-type addition reactions, the use of activated esters and other strategies are demonstrated by recently published examples. These works indicate that post-polymerization modification is an efficient route to the synthesis of various functional PDSAs.
Simultaneous Dual End-Functionalization Of Peg Via The Passerini Three-Component Reaction For The Synthesis Of Abc Miktoarm Terpolymers

Abstract:In this article, we demonstrate the Passerini three-component reaction as a simple, effective method for the synthesis of polymers with double functional end groups, which are key precursors for the preparation of ABC miktoarm terpolymers. Thus, via the one-step Passerini reaction of monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-propionaldehyde (PEG-CHO) with 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid and propargyl isocyanoacetamide, the PEG chain end was simultaneously functionalized with one atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating site and one alkynyl group. The resulting PEG(-alkynyl)-Br was then used for the synthesis of three types of miktoarm ABC terpolymers via two approaches. First, we conducted ATRP of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), then click reaction with azido-terminated polystyrene (PS-N-3) or poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PtBA-N-3) and obtained two ABC miktoarm terpolymers PEG(b-PNIPAM)-b-PS and PEG(-b-PNIPAM)-b-PtBA. Alternatively, we conducted single electron transfer living radical polymerization of tBA and click reaction with PS-N-3 simultaneously to give PEG(-b-PtBA)-b-PS. All the polymer precursors and miktoarm terpolymers have been characterized by H-1 NMR, Fourier transform infrared, gel permeation chromatography, demonstrating that both approaches provided well-defined ABC miktoarm terpolymers. Abstract:We describe a straightforward synthetic strategy for a new family of functional poly(ester–amide)s (PEAs) with tertiary ester linkages via the Passerini multicomponent polymerization (Passerini-MCP) of a diacid (A2), 1,6-diisocyanohexane (B2), and four kinds of electron-deficient ketones. First, Passerini three-component reactions (Passerni-3CR) of hexanoic acid and tert-butyl isocyanide with nine kinds of ketones were investigated to evaluate the reactivities of these ketones toward Passerni-3CR. Four electron-deficient ketones, 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone (1), 1,1,1-trifluoroacetophenone (2), ethyl pyruvate (3), and 2,3-butanedione (4), were found to be excellent oxo-compounds for this Passerini-3CR. Then, the Passerini-MCP of A2 and B2 with 1, 2, 3, and 4 in CH2Cl2 was performed to generate polymers P1–P4 with tertiary ester linkages and different electron-withdrawing substituents. Abstract:The synthesis of polymers with various functional groups has always been the core of polymer chemistry. Traditionally, there are two approaches to prepare such polymers: i) preparing functional monomers first and then conducting polymerization to get target functional polymers; and ii) post‐modification of a precursor polymer. Both methods unavoidably involve separation and purification of intermediate products, which is laborious and time‐consuming. A one‐pot synthesis strategy, which combines monomer preparation and controlled polymerization in just one reactor to generate well‐defined polymers efficiently, is thus proposed. Abstract:The quest for circular designs and ways to reuse polymer materials demands further advances in the development of reversible chemistries. Stimuli-responsive systems incorporated into polymer materials that enable the formation and cleavage of covalent bonds, hold great potential to reversibly decompose materials into their original building blocks. [2π+2π] photocycloadditions, for which the addition and reversion mechanism can be triggered by disparate wavelengths, stand as an attractive platform for triggering such controlled and reversible photoligation towards achieving renewable polymer materials. This perspective highlights the potential of this type of photochemistry to incorporate solid polymer materials and generate reversible polymerizations. The design of effective photoresponsive materials with specific functions requires the consideration of a number of parameters. Following a bottom-up approach - from molecular chemistry to macromolecular functionality - this perspective provides a recipe of the key aspects to consider in the design of such advanced renewable materials. Furthermore, examples of the state of the art in the field are highlighted and an overview of the fundamental challenges that remain is provided. Finally, an outlook on the next frontiers to cross is proposed.
Multicomponent Click Chemistry in Polymer Synthesis——New Opportunity for Polymer Chemistry

Abstract:Polymer synthesis is the starting point of polymer science, screening and using suitable organic reactions to prepare novel polymers is the core of polymer synthesis. Recently, polymer synthesis via multicomponent reactions (MCRs) has attracted widespread attention and is becoming a new vibrant branch of polymer chemistry. During the study of MCRs, the overlap between click chemistry and multicomponent reactions has been discovered, leading to the concept of multicomponent click (MCC) chemistry, i. e. some highly efficient, atom economy multicomponent reactions, which only form harmless byproducts, can also be looked at as click reactions. The MCC reactions can work as efficient coupling tools like traditional two component click reactions, meanwhile, new functional groups can be easily introduced due to the multicomponent nature of those reactions. As a result, multifunctional polymers, which are normally prepared via laborious multi-step methods, can be facilely achieved through one-step MCC reactions, providing a new strategy to synthesize functional polymers for multipurpose applications. In this article, the similar characteristics of click chemistry and MCRs will be discussed to illuminate the concept of MCC chemistry. As concrete examples, the large-scaled prepared functional polymers via the Biginelli reaction (a typical MCC reaction) will be introduced, suggesting the Biginelli reaction an excellent elementary reaction for polymer synthesis. The chain-end or chain-middle modified polymers via the Ugi reaction (another typical MCC reaction) will also be presented, indicating the Ugi reaction a powerful tool for the preparation of high valueadded polymers. In particular, the advantage and disadvantage of the Biginelli reaction and the Ugi reaction will be pointed out, respectively, and some perspectives for the future development of multicomponent click chemistry in polymer chemistry will be summarized.

Abstract:In this work, a series of polyesters with different functional side groups were successfully prepared by Passerini three-component polymerization (P-3CP) in "one-pot" from biorenewable l-glutamic acid (l-GA)-based monomers. First, the polymerization conditions including monomer feed ratios, solvents and comonomer were systematically studied using Boc-protected l-GA with adipaldehyde and tert-butyl isocyanide. Under the optimal polymerization conditions, a variety of N-substituted l-GA-based monomers as well as functional isocyanides were attempted in the P-3CP to produce polyesters with different functionalities. Moreover, it was found that after removal of pendant protecting groups, the obtained l-GA-based polyester degraded spontaneously into small molecules via 1,5-intramolecular cyclization between the pendant amine groups and the ester groups in polymer backbone. The structures and thermal properties of obtained polymers were determined by 1H NMR, IR, SEC, MALDI-ToF-MS, DSC, and TGA measurements. Starting from biorenewable l-GA, this approach will provide a facile and straightforward route to produce functional and biodegradable polyesters, thus effectively expanding the range of biodegradable polymers.

Abstract:A novel method is presented, demonstrating the facile generation of α‐acyloxy carboxamide radicals via photoredox catalysis of Passerini adducts, obtained employing a 4‐formyl‐1,4‐dihydropyridine. These radicals efficiently undergo Giese reactions with various olefins, yielding novel Passerini compounds unattainable through traditional aldehyde‐based routes. The facile generation of the α‐acyloxy carboxamide radical is hereby reported for the first time, utilizing a photoredox catalyzed reaction of Passerini adducts synthesized using a 4‐formyl‐1,4‐dihydropyridine as the carbonyl component. This radical effectively engages in a Giese reaction with a range of olefins, ultimately leading to the synthesis of novel Passerini‐derived products not previously amenable to direct aldehyde‐based transformations. Consequently, the resulting strategy, developed both in batch and in flow, offers a promising opportunity to expand the chemical space accessible through the Passerini reaction, virtually incorporating "impossible" aldehydes.

Abstract:Although visible-light photoredox catalysis has implemented diverse reaction mechanisms for the synthesis of well-defined polymers with precision spatiotemporal control, the tolerance of redox-sensitive monomers remains a formidable challenge. In an alternative way, the photoiniferter polymerization technique offers an opportunity to address this unmet need. Herein, we report an efficient iodine-transfer radical ring-opening polymerization of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs), affording unsaturated linear polymers with predictable molecular weight and low dispersity. Commercially available alkyl iodide and light strips are used to initiate and control the polymer chain growth. Notably, this light-driven system tolerates active pentafluorophenyl ester group, whereby nearly quantitative post-modifications proceed and have rendered one-for-all preparation of polymers including crystalline semi-fluorinated P(VCPs) with enhanced material properties.
