Abstract:[2+2] photocycloadditions of 1,3-dienes represent a powerful yet synthetically underutilized class of reactions. We report that visible light absorbing transition metal complexes enable the [2+2] cycloaddition of a diverse range of 1,3-dienes. The ability to use long-wavelength visible light is attractive because these reaction conditions tolerate the presence of sensitive functional groups that might be readily decomposed by the high-energy UVC radiation required for direct photoexcitation of 1,3-dienes. The resulting vinylcyclobutane products are poised for a variety of further diversification reactions, and this method is consequently expected to be powerfully enabling in the synthesis of complex organic targets.

Abstract:Photocatalytic [2 + 2] cycloaddition is a useful tool for the synthesis of cyclobutane derivatives, which contributes a large part to natural compound production. Usually, the [2 + 2] cycloadditions are catalyzed by transition-metal complexes. Here, we report the use of a pure organic photocatalyst based on a conjugated microporous polymer network for the [2 + 2] cycloaddition of styrene derivatives under the irradiation of visible light. Both unsymmetrical and homocycloaddition could be obtained with high conversion and selectivity. In addition, natural products, such as di-O-methylendiandrin A and endiandrin A are also synthesized with a high catalytic efficiency.

Abstract:We report a new method for the formal [3+2] reaction of aryl cyclopropyl ketones with olefins to generate highly substituted cyclopentane ring systems. The key initiation step in this process is the one-electron reduction of the ketone to the corresponding radical anion, which is accomplished using a photocatalytic system comprising Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), La(OTf)(3), and TMEDA.

Abstract:The first nitro-group-initiated redox-neutral [3+2] cycloaddition of nitrocyclopropanes with alkenes by using visible-light-absorbing transition-metal complexes was reported. High diastereoselectivities were observed for two quaternary carbon centers on the ring and validated by DFT calculations. Spiro- or polycyclic structures can be constructed smoothly. Cyclic γ-amino acid derivatives and polysubstituted cyclic amino alcohols can be obtained easily through reduction of the nitro group.

Abstract:The recent thioxanthone-sensitizer-catalyzed intermolecular [2 + 2] cycloaddition induced by visible-light irradiation set the stage for the future development of feasible photocycloadditions. Nonetheless, the mechanism of this reaction still remains under debate, especially on the activation mode of the thioxanthone photosensitizer (energy transfer, bielectron exchange, and hydrogen transfer are all possible mechanisms). To settle this issue, systematic density functional theory calculations have been carried out. The results indicate that the energy-transfer pathway is more favorable than the bielectron-exchange and the hydrogen-transfer pathways. Meanwhile, the overall transformations involve the complexation and excitation of photosensitizer, the first C-C bond formation, the dissociation of the sensitizer, the triplet-to-singlet electronic state crossing, and the second C-C bond formation. The first C-C bond formation is the rate- and selectivity-determining step, and synergistic energy and electron transfer from photosensitizer to substrate moieties takes place along this process. On this basis, the effect of olefin substrates (ethyl vinyl ketone vs vinyl acetate) on the stereoselectivity was finally analyzed.

Abstract:Reported herein is the first example of the synthesis of carbazoles via oxidative cyclization of 3-alkenylindoles with styrenes under visible light. The irradiation of a catalytic amount of [Ir(dtbbpy)(ppy)<sub>2</sub>][PF<sub>6</sub>] as the photocatalyst enables various 3-alkenylindoles and styrenes to undergo tandem [2 + 2] cycloaddition/rearrangement, thereby leading to carbazole derivatives in good to excellent yields under aerobic conditions. Abstract:In this minireview, catalytic enantioselective transformations via visible light photocatalysis are discussed. High enantioselectivities are achieved from the combination of visible light photocatalysis with chiral organocatalysts. Considering the huge progress made in both asymmetric synthetic chemistry and visible light photocatalysis chemistry, more new chiral catalysts with varieties of transition-metals will be developed and engaged in the field of asymmetric photoreactions.

Abstract:Light-tunable covalent chemistry is highly urgent in the fields of chemistry, biology, and materials science, especially for the smart materials and surface, due to the spatiotemporal control and feasible operation. Here, a new type of wavelength-selective photo-cycloaddition of styryl-anthracene carboxylic acid (SACA) is reported. Upon the irradiation of 450 nm visible light or 365 nm UV light, SACA can undergo [2+2] or [2+4] photocycloaddition, respectively. Furthermore, the [2+2] photocycloaddition induced by vis-light of 450 nm is reversible and can be disrupted by 365 nm UV light to form dimer-24 which cannot be photo-cleavable. Owing to the feasibility and spatiotemporal characteristics of UV-vis light-controlled photocycloaddition, the SACA possesses potential applications in various areas such as self-assembly, dynamic wrinkles, and fluorescence patterns, which are also explored and exhibited in this work.

Abstract:The facile electron transfer catalysis of diaryl diselenides was utilized for the visible-light [4+2] homodimerization of decomposition-prone styrenes. Abstract:We report that Ru(bpz)32+ is an excellent sensitizer for the photooxygenation of aryl cyclopropanes upon irradiation with visible light. The effectiveness of this photocatalyst enables the synthesis of a range of five-membered endoperoxides in excellent yield with quite low (0.5 mol%) catalyst loadings even when standard household light sources are utilized.

Abstract:We have studied 2‐(2‐aminophenyl)benzothiazole and related derivatives for their photophysical properties in view of employing them as new and readily tunable organic photocatalysts. Their triplet energies were estimated by DFT calculations to be in the range of 52‐57 kcal·mol‐1 suggesting their suitability for the [2+2] photocycloaddition of unsaturated acyl imidazoles with styrene derivatives. Experimental studies have shown that 2‐(2‐aminophenyl)benzothiazoles comprising alkylamino groups (NHMe, NHiPr) or the native amino group provide the best photocatalytic results in these visible‐light mediated [2+2] reactions without the need of any additives yielding a range of cyclobutane derivatives. A combined experimental and theoretical approach has provided insights into the underlying triplet‐triplet energy transfer process.
