Abstract:[2+2] photocycloadditions of 1,3-dienes represent a powerful yet synthetically underutilized class of reactions. We report that visible light absorbing transition metal complexes enable the [2+2] cycloaddition of a diverse range of 1,3-dienes. The ability to use long-wavelength visible light is attractive because these reaction conditions tolerate the presence of sensitive functional groups that might be readily decomposed by the high-energy UVC radiation required for direct photoexcitation of 1,3-dienes. The resulting vinylcyclobutane products are poised for a variety of further diversification reactions, and this method is consequently expected to be powerfully enabling in the synthesis of complex organic targets.

Abstract:We report a new method for the formal [3+2] reaction of aryl cyclopropyl ketones with olefins to generate highly substituted cyclopentane ring systems. The key initiation step in this process is the one-electron reduction of the ketone to the corresponding radical anion, which is accomplished using a photocatalytic system comprising Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), La(OTf)(3), and TMEDA.

Abstract:A highly regio- and diastereoselective visible light-promoted [2 + 2] cycloaddition between readily available 1,4-dihydropyridines and olefins has been developed. This strategy is operationally simple and atom-economical and enables the construction of strained polysubstituted 2-azabicyclo[4.2.0]octanes with three all-carbon quaternary centers with good functional group tolerance. These products can be easily converted to various structurally unique derivatives. The primary mechanistic studies demonstrated that the reaction proceeds through an energy transfer pathway.

Abstract:The first nitro-group-initiated redox-neutral [3+2] cycloaddition of nitrocyclopropanes with alkenes by using visible-light-absorbing transition-metal complexes was reported. High diastereoselectivities were observed for two quaternary carbon centers on the ring and validated by DFT calculations. Spiro- or polycyclic structures can be constructed smoothly. Cyclic γ-amino acid derivatives and polysubstituted cyclic amino alcohols can be obtained easily through reduction of the nitro group.

Abstract:Photocatalytic [2 + 2] cycloaddition is a useful tool for the synthesis of cyclobutane derivatives, which contributes a large part to natural compound production. Usually, the [2 + 2] cycloadditions are catalyzed by transition-metal complexes. Here, we report the use of a pure organic photocatalyst based on a conjugated microporous polymer network for the [2 + 2] cycloaddition of styrene derivatives under the irradiation of visible light. Both unsymmetrical and homocycloaddition could be obtained with high conversion and selectivity. In addition, natural products, such as di-O-methylendiandrin A and endiandrin A are also synthesized with a high catalytic efficiency.

Abstract:Visible‐light‐mediated [2+2] photocycloaddition reaction can be considered an ideal solution due to its green and sustainable properties, and is one of the most efficient methods to synthesize four‐membered ring motifs. Although research on the [2+2] photocycloaddition of alkynes is challenging because of the diminished reactivity of alkynes, and the more significant ring strain of the products, remarkable achievements have been made in this field. In this article, we highlight the recent advances in visible‐light‐mediated [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions of alkynes, with focus on the reaction mechanism and the late‐stage synthetic applications. Advances in obtaining cyclobutenes, azetines, and oxetene active intermediates continue to be breakthroughs in this fascinating field of research.

Abstract:1,3-Dienes are readily available feedstocks that are widely used in the laboratory and industry. However, the potential of converting 1,3-dienes into value-added products, especially chiral products, has not yet been fully exploited. By synergetic photoredox/copper catalysis, we achieve the first visible-light-induced, enantioselective carbocyanation of 1,3-dienes by using carboxylic acid derivatives and trimethylsilyl cyanide. Under mild and neutral conditions, a diverse range of chiral allyl cyanides are produced in generally good efficiency and with high enantioselectivity from bench-stable and user-safe chemicals. Abstract:The electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes has clear advantages to provide complimentary reactivity in organic synthesis while avoiding the need for an expensive transition metal-based photocatalyst. It should be noted that transition metal-based photocatalysts such as Ir- and Ru-complexes have been successfully applied to perform [3+2] cycloaddition reactions for the synthesis of cyclopentane derivatives via the formation of a new C–C bond. Alternatively, we report an EDA complex-mediated strategy to synthesize heterocyclics via the formation of C–N bond. Relying on this strategy, donor/donor diazo compounds were generated in situ. Subsequently, rarely reported (spiro)pyrazolines bearing a quaternary carbon center were afforded via this [3+2] cycloaddition. This protocol exhibited a wide substrate scope, and selective transformations of existing bioactive molecules into functionalized (spiro)pyrazolines analogues were also successfully achieved. Finally, detailed mechanistic investigations proved the formation of the EDA complex and provided a clear mechanistic overview of this reaction.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed intramolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition of cyclopropyl (CP)-capped dienes with ynes/enes/allene was reported, providing an efficient method toward a spiro[2.5]octene ring system found in natural products, such as illudin. The [4 + 2] cycloadducts can be converted into other compounds via CP chemistry. This reaction can also be catalyzed by Ni. A density functional theory study on the reaction mechanisms is also reported here.

Abstract:Photo‐promoted cyanomethyl radical procedures for the preparation of 2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐indenes and 2,8‐dihydrocyclopenta[a]indenes from phenyl‐linked 1,6‐enynes with α‐halogenated acetonitriles are reported. The iodocyanomethylation/cyclization is performed via an atom‐transfer radical addition (ATRA) strategy under photocatalyst‐ and oxidant‐free conditions. In particular, the photoinduced cyanomethylative cascade bicyclization is carried out under the fac‐Ir(ppy)3/Na2CO3 catalystic symtem and visible light irradiation. These methods offer a one‐step and atom‐economical access to diverse cyano‐group containing five‐membered rings with broad substrate scope and high selectivity. A plausible reaction mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract:A visible-light-induced photocatalytic intermolecular dearomative cyclization of 2-bromo-1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and alkynes afforded biologically important spirocarbocycle structures in moderate to good yields via a 5-exo-dig radical cyclization under mild reaction conditions. A 5.0 mmol scale dearomatization reaction proceeded smoothly with 95% yield even when the catalyst loading was reduced to 0.1 mol %, suggesting that this method was suitable for large-scale synthesis.
