Abstract:In the Raniganj Coalfield beside Ajay River, the coal seams are generally thick, but some of the formations are moderate seam. Coal pillars are standing under shale roof and caved goaf of overlying seam. Taking into consideration the mining hazards like gas, fire and inundation, a feasible mining methodology for the coal pillar extraction is still its infancy. In this paper, a methodology is applied for the extraction of coal seam having 3 m thickness under shale roof and caved goaf. The percentage of extraction from the panel is found 70% by load haul dumper with belt conveyor combination. No spontaneous heating was observed during the extraction of the panel. The Graham Ratio, Jones and Trickett ratio, and dry bulb and wet bulb temperature were also found in lower side. In addition, no irregularities found, while local fall and main fall occur. Roof fall characteristics and immediate roof strata were monitored by the strata monitoring instruments as per strata control and monitoring plan and simultaneously precautions were taken to prevent spontaneous heating of coal and inundation.
