Abstract:A slip boundary has been shown to have a significant impact on flow past bluff bodies. In this work and using a circular cylinder as a model system, the effects of various slip configurations on the passing flow are investigated. A theoretical analysis using matched-asymptotic expansion is first performed in the small-Reynolds number regime following Stokes and Oseen. A slip boundary condition is shown to lead to only higher-order effects (~1/ln(Re)) on the resulting drag coefficient. For higher Reynolds numbers (100–500), the effects of five types of symmetric slip boundary conditions, namely, no slip, fore-side slip, aft-side slip, flank slip, and all slip on the flow field and pertinent parameters are investigated with numerical simulations. Detailed results on the flow structure and force distribution are presented. Flank slip is found to have the best effect for drag reduction with comparable coverage of slip area. For asymmetric slip distributions, torque and lift are found to generally occur.

Abstract:A direction adaptive approach for the reduction of drag and the suppression of lift fluctuation in flow passing a circular cylinder is developed. Flexible filaments are attached to the surface of the cylinder, and different configurations, including the number, lengths, and angles of attachment of the filaments, as well as their tension and bending features, are investigated. In this comprehensive numerical study, the configuration with two filaments 180^{o} apart is found to be optimal for drag reduction and lift fluctuation suppression and is adaptive to the direction of the incoming flow. A drag reduction of 10.8% and a lift fluctuation suppression of 34.6% can be achieved as one filament is attached to the rear stagnation point and the other to the front stagnation point. The hairy coating resembled by 12 evenly attached filaments is also considered. Though marked drag reduction has not been found for this configuration, we leave it an open question for future studies to explore various properties of the filaments in turbulent flow, whose interaction with the filaments would be significant.
Stability and Drag Reduction in Transient Channel Flow of Fibre Suspension

Abstract:> Drag reduction features in the transition regime of channel flow with fibre suspension were analyzed in terms of the linear stability theory. The modified stability equation was obtained based on the slender-body theory and natural closure approximation. Results of the stability analysis show attenuating effects of fibre additives to the flow instability. For the cases leading to transition, drag reduction rate increases with the characteristic parameter H of fibres. The mechanism of drag reduction by fibres is revealed through the variation of velocity profile and the decrease of wall shear stress. The theoretical results are qualitatively consistent with some typical experiments.

Abstract:An LB-DF/FD method, combined with lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and direct-forcing/fictitious domain (DF/FD) scheme, is set up for fluid-solid interaction problems. The LB-DF/FD method uses two unrelated meshes to avoid re-meshing procedure. They are Eulerian mesh for the flow domain and Lagrangian mesh for the solid domain. LB-DF/FD method overcomes fluctuations in computation of forces on solid particle in conventional LBM. The method is validated with simulation of flow past a fixed circular cylinder, a circular cylinder moving in an infinite channel or rotating in an infinite field. Flow around two circular cylinders in tandem at low Reynolds numbers is simulated by using LB-DF/FD method. Effects of spacing gap between cylinders (g *) and Renolds number (Re) are investigated. Numerical results including streamlines, lift and drag force and torque exerted on the cylinder, at Re=0.001, 0.1 and 10, 0.2≤g *≤8.0 are presented. g * shows remarkable effect on lift and drag force and torque exerted on cylinders. Stokes cell number and drag force exerted on cylinders depend on Re.

Abstract:The classical theory of high-speed flow predicts that a moving rigid object experiences a drag proportional to the square of its speed. However, this reasoning does not apply if the object in the flow is flexible, because its shape then becomes a function of its speed--for example, the rolling up of broad tree leaves in a stiff wind. The reconfiguration of bodies by fluid forces is common in nature, and can result in a substantial drag reduction that is beneficial for many organisms. Experimental studies of such flow-structure interactions generally lack a theoretical interpretation that unifies the body and flow mechanics. Here we use a flexible fibre immersed in a flowing soap film to measure the drag reduction that arises from bending of the fibre by the flow. Using a model that couples hydrodynamics to bending, we predict a reduced drag growth compared to the classical theory. The fibre undergoes a bending transition, producing shapes that are self-similar; for such configurations, the drag scales with the length of self-similarity, rather than the fibre profile width. These predictions are supported by our experimental data.

Abstract:This study employs numerical simulation to investigate the two-dimensional flow of a rectangular cylinder with an aspect ratio of 5, under various flow attack angles ( α ) and Reynolds numbers. The lift and drag coefficients, surface pressure distributions, and flow structures are analyzed using the HODMD method. The findings suggest that a rise in flow attack angle increases the lift and drag coefficients of rectangular cylinders, but the turning point of the Reynolds number leads to an opposite trend in the increase of drag coefficients. The sensitivity of the flow field is intricately related to the Reynolds number and flow attack angle. Additionally, the increase in both Reynolds number and flow attack angle enhances the complexity of the flow structure, particularly at the trailing edge, which is a sensitive part of applying flow control. HODMD analysis shows that the first three modes dominate dynamics. Odd-order modes contribute significantly to lift at low α , while even-order modes cancel each other. As α increases, the contributing modes of lift gradually shift from odd to even order. This study provides valuable insights for prospective flow control strategies and addresses vibration concerns in associated submerged structures.

Abstract:Stefan flow is a mass flow perpendicular to the particle surface induced by the reaction or component diffusion occurring inside particles. It significantly affects the interphase transfer process in gas?solid reacting flows. In this work, a second-order immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) is adopted for analyzing the influence of Stefan flow on the drag force in flows past fixed random arrays of spherical particles. The effect of Stefan flow is introduced by assigning specific fluid velocities at Lagrangian markers on the sphere surface. The simulation results show that the drag force exerting on particles decreases as the Stefan Reynolds number increases. The drag force reduction caused by Stefan flow is weakened as the solid volume fraction increases. This is because the thick boundary layer caused by Stefan flow on each particle is suppressed by Stefan flow from their neighboring particles. Based on the simulation results, a novel drag correction coefficient is developed, which considers the joint influence of the Stefan Reynolds number, particle Reynolds number and solid volume fraction.

Abstract:This paper presents a variable density topology optimization method to numerically investigate the optimal drag-reduction shape of objects in the two-dimensional and three-dimensional flows with steady incompressible external flow conditions, taking into account material volume constraints. By introducing the porous media model, the artificial Darcy friction is added to the Navier-Stokes equation to characterize the influence of materials on the fluid. Material density is applied to implement material interpolation. By transforming the boundary integral form of viscous dissipative expression of drag into the volume integral of artificial Darcy friction and convection term, we solve the problem of drag expression on the implicit interface corresponding to the structure. The continuous adjoint method is used to analyze gradient information for iteratively solving topology optimization problems. We obtain the relevant topology optimization structures of the minimum drag shapes, investigate the effect of the low Reynolds number on the drag force corresponding to two objective functions and discuss the mechanism of drag reduction by a hydrodynamic body shape.

Abstract:An aerodynamic analysis of the Ahmed body in motion is presented in this work. The goal is to investigate the effect of motion on aerodynamic forces with the aim of generating useful information for reducing drag energy consumption and improving stability and comfort. The research is carried out using finite volume computational simulation with the OpenFOAM(R) libraries. Using the well-known benchmark for a fixed Ahmed body geometry, the numerical model is validated with experimental data. A hybrid RANS-LES turbulence model is employed and achieves an excellent level of agreement. The Ahmed body is then simulated under dynamic conditions, using a spectrum of frequencies and amplitudes corresponding to typical heaving motion observed in passenger cars. Furthermore, a quasi-dynamic model is proposed and evaluated to reduce the computational cost of dynamic simulations. The results of the dynamic study differ significantly from those of the static study, demonstrating that vertical velocity, position, and flow inertia have a major impact. The evaluated quasi-dynamic model may not precisely capture quantitative values, but it provides insight into the general trend of aerodynamic forces throughout the oscillation cycle.

Abstract:In this study, flow structures and their evolution over a track cyclist were investigated through wind tunnel tests. In supplement to the experiment, high-fidelity numerical simulations were also conducted to demonstrate the origins of global flow structures. In wind tunnel tests, a full-scale track cyclist mannequin was built based on the three-dimensional scanning of an elite track cyclist in a riding position of a sprint event, and a Cobra probe was used to measure the wake structures. The results show that the preeminent flow structures around the track cyclist mannequin are the streamwise vortices originating from different body parts. The evolution of these vortices involves strong vortex interactions and performs differently on each side, resulting in a dominant streamwise vortex merged behind the right thigh, which is associated with aerodynamic drag productions. In particular, leg position affects the lateral displacement between the elbow vortex and upper thigh, which is the reason for the distinct flow behaviors on each side. This study helps to better understand the flow around a track cyclist, facilitating the development of drag-saving strategies in the future.

The flow structure on drag-reduced riblet surfaces

Abstract:The structure of air flow on riblet surfaces has been studied with direct numerical simulations. Drag reduction was achieved through optimization of riblet geometry affecting the flow structure in riblet grooves. Force analysis and flow structure is studied based on k-ε turbulence model, and drag reduction and increase mechanism on riblet surfaces is related to the flow alteration. Reynolds shear stress is significantly decreased which is considered the dominant factor resulting in drag reduction. Through force analysis, the significant decrease of viscous force is considered the dominant factor resulting in drag reduction.Pressure drag on riblet surfaces generating from the deviation of static pressure on the front and rear end of the riblet occurred and grew exponentially with the flow rate. Near-wall vortical structures, Reynolds shear stress, static pressure and velocity field on riblet surfaces is analyzed in detail.

Abstract:The fluid–structure interaction problem composed of an elongated, finite-length, flexible cylinder falling in a fluid at rest is investigated experimentally. Tomographic reconstruction of the cylinder and three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry of the surrounding fluid, based on the Shake-The-Box algorithm, are used jointly to capture both solid and fluid motions. Starting from the rectilinear vertical fall characterized by a steady wake, focus is placed on subsequent regimes involving, mainly in the horizontal direction, periodic rigid-body motions (RBM) of weak amplitude or periodic large-amplitude bending oscillations (BO). Two RBM regimes are explored: the TRA regime where the cylinder exhibits translational oscillations in a plane perpendicular to its axis, and the AZI regime in which the body displays an azimuthal oscillation around its centre. The associated unsteady wakes are composed of counter-rotating vortices bending near the body ends to connect with the adjacent vortex rows. Specific organizations of the vortical structures are uncovered, depending on the regime. In particular, in the AZI regime, they present an antisymmetrical distribution relative to the midspan point. For a sufficiently long cylinder, BO regimes emerge, resembling the structural modes of an unsupported beam. The associated wakes exhibit a cellular organization. Within each cell delimited by two deformation nodes, two counter-rotating vortex rows are shed per oscillation cycle. Flow velocity fluctuations are in phase opposition on each side of a deformation node. For both RBM and BO regimes, frequency and phase analyses of cylinder and wake behaviours, along the span, highlight the spatio-temporal synchronization of the unsteady flow and moving body.

Abstract:Dynamics of two-dimensional flow past a rigid flat plate with a trailing closed flexible filament acting as a deformable afterbody are investigated numerically by an immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method for the fluid flow and a finite element method for the filament motion. The effects of Reynolds number ( ) and length ratio ( ) on the flow patterns and dynamics of the rigid-flexible coupling system are studied. Based on our numerical results, five typical state modes have been identified in plane in terms of the filament shape and corresponding dynamics, i.e. static deformation, micro-vibration, multi-frequency flapping, periodic flapping and chaotic flapping modes, respectively. Benefiting from the passive flow control by using the flexible filament as a deformable afterbody, the coupled system may enjoy a significant drag reduction (up to ) compared with bare plate scenarios ( ). Maximum drag reduction achieved at is often accompanied by the onset of the system state transition. The flow characteristic and its relation to the change in hydrodynamic drag are further explored in order to reveal the underlying mechanisms of the counterintuitive dynamical behaviour of the coupled system. The scaling laws for the form drag and the friction drag, which arise from the pressure and viscous effects, respectively, are proposed to estimate the overall drag acting on the system. The results obtained in the present study may shed some light on understanding the dynamical behaviour of rigid-flexible coupling systems.

Abstract:Experimental study of flow structure and its aerodynamic characteristics over an ogive-cylinder was conducted by dyeing streak and laser-induced fluorescence techniques in water tunnel of BUAA and by surface pressure measurement in wind tunnel of NPU NF-3. At subcritical Reynolds numbers, an asymmetric multi-vortices series is generated on the leeside of the ogive-cylinder at high incidences and zero sideslip and a damped sinusoidal distribution of side force is induced along the body. The spatial movement trajectory of the vortices series is a typical three-dimensional configuration in which all the shed vortices approach or cross over the symmetry plane while developing downstream along the body except the first one. By correlated analysis of vortices movement, cross flow pattern and special points at the side force distribution curves, a 3-D structural model of asymmetric multi-vortices flow is developed.

Abstract:Tian Xinliang’s group proposed a novel flow control method called "Flexible coating reduces drag" (FCRD) with a flexible enclosure constructed behind the bluff body to adjust the fluid forces received and the flow pattern around it. Compared with the traditional flow control methods, FCRD does not change the structure of the control object and thus has a positive engineering application prospect. Besides, FCRD brings out a new "fluid-structure-fluid" interaction problem, which needs further investigation.

Abstract:In this study, a coupled numerical model for simulation of 3D flow interacting with a slender body is proposed. A discrete-forcing immersed boundary method is implemented to couple the fluid motion and structure deformation. To model the dynamic response of a slender structure, an efficient nonlinear beam model is developed. A new surface reconstruction method is proposed to accurately represent the occupation of the moving structure with different cross-sections in the fixed Cartesian grids of the fluid domain. A quadratic interpolation based on the least-squares method is proposed to realize the local fluid velocity near the relocated solid surface. To validate the model, several fluid–structure interaction problems including a flexible plate attached to a circular cylinder in a flow, a flexible flag in a flow, etc. are simulated. The numerical results are in good agreement with reference results from either experiments or numerical modelling. The model is further employed to investigate the vortex-induced vibration of a flexible riser under unidirectional and oscillatory flow conditions as well as impulse force analysis for a swinging carangiform swimmer in different swing frequencies, the latter has a varying cross-sectional shape along the body’s central axis.
