Abstract:In this paper, we derive mathematical formulas for the skin friction coefficient in wall-bounded turbulence based on the Reynolds averaged streamwise momentum equation and the total stress. Specifically, with a theoretical or empirical relation of the total stress, the skin friction coefficient is expressed in terms of the mean velocity and the Reynolds shear stress in an arbitrary wall-normal region [h(0), h(1)]. The formulas are validated using direct numerical simulation data of turbulent channel and boundary layer flows, and the results show that our formulas estimate the skin friction coefficient very accurately with an error less than 2%. The present integral formula can be used to determine the skin friction in turbulent channel and boundary layer flows at high Reynolds numbers where the near-wall statistics are very difficult to measure accurately.

Abstract:In this paper, a new immersed‐boundary method for simulating flows over complex immersed, moving boundaries is presented. The flow is computed on a fixed Cartesian mesh and the solid boundaries are allowed to move freely through the mesh. The present method is based on a finite‐difference approach on a staggered mesh together with a fractional‐step method. It must be noted that the immersed boundary is generally not coincident with the position of the solution variables on the grid, therefore, an appropriate strategy is needed to construct a relationship between the curved boundary and the grid points nearby. Furthermore, a momentum forcing is added on the body boundaries and also inside the body to satisfy the no‐slip boundary condition. The immersed boundary is represented by a series of interfacial markers, and the markers are also used as Lagrangian forcing points. A linear interpolation is then used to scale the Lagrangian forcing from the interfacial markers to the corresponding grid points nearby. This treatment of the immersed‐boundary is used to simulate several problems, which have been validated with previous experimental results in the open literature, verifying the accuracy of the present method. Abstract:Flow separation from a spherical particle in supercritical water (SCW) is the basic flow structure in supercritical water fluidized bed (SCWFB). In order to study flow separation from a spherical particle in SCW in detail, a numerical model fully accounting for variations in thermo-physical properties has been developed in the pseudo-critical zone. Flow separation parameters (separation angle, length of wake vortex, width of wake vortex, and drag coefficient) for forced convection, assisting convection, and opposing convection have been obtained at intermediate Reynolds numbers. Results show that variable viscosity has a remarkable effect on flow separation, and the decreasing viscosity results in higher velocity gradient around the sphere particle surface and a larger wake vortex on the rear particle surface. A simple expression of Cd/Cd-c = (mu(w)/mu(f))(0.15) is achieved to predicate the drag coefficient of the SCW flow with mu(w)/mu(f) between 0.7 and 1.0. Free convection inhibits the flow separation of the assisting convection, but enhances the flow separation of the opposing convection. Three flow separation zones (the rear-end separation zone, the transition zone, and the reversed flow zone) are observed for the opposing convection. (C) 2014 The Institution of Chemical Engineers. Abstract:A local mesh refinement virtual boundary method based on a uniform grid is designed to study the transition between the flow patterns of two spheres in tandem arrangement for Re = 250. For a small gap (L/D = 1.5), the flow field is axisymmetric. As the spacing ratio increases to 2.0, the pressure gradient induces the circumferential fluid motion and a plane-symmetric flow is constructed through a regular bifurcation. For L/D >= 2.5, the vortices are periodically shed from the right sphere, but the planar symmetry remains. The case for L/D=3.0 is picked up to give a detail investigation for the unsteady flow. The shedding frequency of vortical structure from the upper side of the right sphere is found to be double of the frequency of the lower side. With the flow spectra of various gaps given, the underlying competitive mechanism between the two shedding frequencies is studied and a critical spacing gap is revealed. Abstract:This paper describes the use of water tunnel plate experiments and large eddy simulations to understand ventilated partial cavity (VPC) flow, especially the mechanism of friction drag reduction. The different flow behaviors along the flow direction indicate that VPC can be divided into three regions: continuous cavity, transitional cavity, and mixing cavity. Specifically, in the continuous cavity region, the flow state can be regarded as laminar; the density and dynamic viscosity are close to those of the strictly gas phase; and the resulting wall shear stress reaches minimum level along the flow direction. In the transitional cavity region, the flow state is similar to the transition state of single-phase flow with density, viscosity, and wall shear stress along the flow direction all exhibiting exponential growth. In the mixing cavity region, the flow state is analogous to turbulence. The flow is in a phase mixed state. The dynamic viscosity is close to that of the strictly water phase. The resulting wall shear stress is stable with small fluctuations. Importantly, the analytical boundary layer equation for wall shear stress derived from the momentum equation remains applicable to the continuous cavity and the mixing cavity regions.
A Vorticity Dynamics Theory of Fully Three-Dimensional Flow Separation Near a Generic Separation Line

Abstract:A predictive theory of three-dimensional steady flow separation is presented in terms of the on-wall signatures of vorticity dynamics during separation. A general framework is developed first as a combination of the boundary vorticity dynamics and local Taylor expansion, which applies to separation from a generic smooth curved wall at any Reynolds numbers. Necessary on-wall conditions are given for the separation to occur, either in small scales inside an attached boundary layer or the whole boundary layer breaks away. A criterion for uniquely identifying a separation line is postulated, no matter the line is closed or open. At large Reynolds numbers, a scale analysis under certain assumptions leads to a threedimensional triple-deck structure near a generic separation line. Abstract:Spring analogy and remeshing method for dynamic unstructured grids are used to solve the problem of plates dispersion under low velocity flow.The process of plates dispersion is dynamically simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with six-degrees of freedom equations.The computational solution reveals the variations of velocity,trajectory,forces and flow characteristics effectively.The separating principle and aerodynamic interference among multi-plates are analysed based on the results.In the unsteady separating process the flow between single plate and mainbody is complex along with the form,movement and decline of wake.The nonlinear aerodynamic pressure on plate is the main reason for separation.

Abstract:Due to large energy losses associated with boundary-layer separation, the performance of fluid machinery is often controlled by flow separation. To predict three-dimensional incipient separation in fluid machinery, a 3-D model has been developed in this paper by correlating main flow and boundary layer flow. In the model, the velocity distribution in boundary layer is divided into inner viscous layer and outer layer, and the correlation factor A between the main flow and the secondary flow has been given out. In the section normal to 3-D separation line, the flow characteristic is simliar to that of 2-D flow separation. The different angle between the directions of the secondary flow and the adverse gradient has different effect on 3-D flow separation. The point far from the 2-D separation point may be separation point in 3-D flow. The point near the 2-D separation point is also near the 3-D separation point. The correlation factor A has great effect on the relative location of the 3-D flow separation point.
Prediction of Incompressible Turbulent Separated Flows Using the Viscous Layer Model

Abstract:A viscous layer model is presented to solve separated flows accurately and efficiently, and its mathematical character near the point of separation is analyzed. For a laminar incompressible flow it is demonstrated that even at the separation point the viscous layer equations are still regular and they can be used to solve the separated flows. The viscous layer equations for turbulent flows in an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system are derived. The numerical examples of the flows with or without separation show that the calculation is accurate and simple.

Abstract:Understanding the mean-flow structures of a separated turbulent boundary layer (TBL) is crucial for turbulence modeling. This study investigates the spatial scaling properties of the total shear stress and mixing length in the TBLs bounding a two-dimensional (2D) separation bubble, aiming to derive analytical descriptions for the entire mean-velocity profiles of the TBLs. For the adverse pressure gradient (APG) TBL upstream of the separation bubble, the total shear stress possesses a two-layer structure with an inner layer adhering to a linear law and an outer layer conforming to a defect power law. In contrast, the mixing length profile consists of four layers, namely the viscous sublayer, the buffer layer, the overlap layer, and the wake region. Each of the layers exhibits a power law or a defect power law relationship with the spatial coordinate normal to the wall. In the four-layer structure, three parameters are sensitive to the variation of the APG: the buffer-layer thickness, the relative magnitude of the mixing length at the boundary layer edge, and a defect power law exponent quantifying the extent of the wake region. For the reattached TBL downstream of the separation bubble, the total shear stress consists of two parts. One part is induced by the pressure gradient and retains the two-layer structure, while the other, engendered by the intense turbulence advected from the separated shear layer, exhibits a dual-power-law distribution. The advected turbulence also significantly alters the four-layer structure of the mixing length, resulting in an augmented buffer layer, a diminished overlap layer, and a wake region that mimics a turbulent mixing layer. Via a dilation ansatz to describe the scaling transition between adjacent layers, the study formulates the complete profiles of the total shear stress and mixing length. The formulation leads to the derivation of novel analytical expressions for the entire mean-velocity profiles of the TBLs. The expressions are in precise accord with the direct numerical simulations of an incompressible 2D separation-bubble flow and a 2D impinging shock wave/TBL interaction. The elucidation of the mean-flow structures through this study is anticipated to facilitate the analysis of turbulence models, thereby enhancing their performance in simulating separated TBLs. The construction of the mean-flow descriptions by inspecting the spatial scaling properties of turbulence paves a promising way for theoretical exploration of complex nonequilibrium TBLs.

Abstract:In experimental aerodynamics (and hydrodynamics) it is well known that, if the flow past a solid body is steady, then the total force on the body can be conveniently estimated by the measured flow data on an appropriate control surface alone. We now show that, for the first time, the steady-flow condition can be removed provided that the flow is incompressible: two innovative formulas for the total force acting on any solid body that moves and deforms arbitrarily in a viscous incompressible fluid, solely in terms of control-surface integrals, are derived based on derivative-moment transformations. The formulas are verified by a numerical test for flow over a two-dimensional fishlike swimming body.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the back flow of the two-dimensional unsteady Prandtl boundary layer under an adverse pressure gradient. The occurrence of back flow is an important physical event in the evolution of boundary layer, which eventually leads to separation. For the two-dimensional unsteady Prandtl boundary layer equations, when the initial tangential velocity is strictly monotonic with respect to the normal variable, and the pressure gradient of the outer flow is adverse, we obtain that the first critical point of the tangential velocity profile with respect to the normal variable, if exists when the boundary layer evolves in time, must appear on the boundary. Moreover, we give a condition on the growth rate of the initial tangential velocity such that there is a back flow point of the Prandtl boundary layer under the adverse pressure gradient. In the appendix, we introduce two examples showing that back flow occurs either when the flow distance is long in the streamwise direction for a given initial monotonic tangential velocity field, or when the initial tangential velocity grows slowly in a large neighborhood of the boundary for a fixed flow distance in the streamwise direction.

Abstract:As typical flow characteristics in a low Reynolds number, laminar separation bubbles (LSBs) and transition to turbulence over airfoils have been extensively studied in recent years. In order to analyze their flow mechanism, numerical investigation using the finite volume method to solve the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a transition Shear Stress Transport (SST) four-equation transition model is performed in this work, combined with the experimental study facilitated by the oil film interferometry technique. Specifically, the transition SST four-equation transition model is solved to simulate the separation location and LSB structure at low Reynolds numbers on a Wortmann FX63-137 airfoil. Good agreement is obtained between the numerical simulation and experimental measurements regarding the separation, transition and reattachment location, aerodynamic coefficients, and overall flow structures. At higher Reynolds numbers of 200 000 and 300 000, similar bubble structures on the airfoil surface are observed, and the location of the bubble moves toward the leading edge of the airfoil by increasing the angle of attack. However, in Reynolds numbers ranging from 300 000 to 500 000, significant changes of the laminar flow separation structures emerge. The flow structure changes from the classical laminar separation bubble to the nonclassical separation flow structure that is composed of a major vortex 1(V1) and a minor vortex 2(V2). Due to the small distance between V1 and V2, it is difficult to distinguish the delicate structure of the two separation bubbles from the classical laminar separation bubble by the experimental method. Numerical simulations of attachment-line boundary layer in hypersonic flow, Part II: the features of three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer

Abstract:In this study,we investigate the characteristics of three-dimensional turbulent boundary layers influenced by transverse flow and pressure gradients. Our findings reveal that even without assuming an infinite sweep, a fully developed turbulent boundary layer over the present swept blunt body maintains spanwise homogeneity, consistent with infinite sweep assumptions.We critically examine the law-of-the and temperature-velocity relationships, typically applied two-dimensional turbulent boundary layers, in three-dimensional contexts. Results show that with transverse velocity and pressure gradient, streamwise velocity adheres to classical velocity transformation relationships and the predictive accuracy of classical temperaturevelocity relationships diminishes because of pressure gradient. We show that near-wall streak structures persist and correspond with energetic structures in the outer region, though three-dimensional effects redistribute energy to align more with the external flow direction. Analysis of shear Reynolds stress and mean flow shear directions reveals in near-wall regions with low transverse flow velocity, but significant deviations at higher transverse velocities. Introduction of transverse pressure gradients together with the transverse velocities alter the velocity profile and mean flow shear directions, with shear Reynolds stress experiencing similar changes but with a lag increasing with transverse. Consistent directional alignment in outer regions suggests a partitioned relationship between shear Reynolds stress and mean flow shear: nonlinear in the inner region and approximately linear in the outer region.

Abstract:The numerical method which is based on flux difference splitting, LU decomposition, and implicit high-resolution third-order Essentially Non-Oscillatory (ENO) scheme was constructed for the efficient computation of steady state solution to three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in general coordinates. The flow fields over underwater axisymmetric bodies, full-appended axisymmetric bodies and axisymmetric bodies with a ring-wing duct were simulated. The method is proved to be capable of predicting the circumferential-mean velocity distribution at model scale to the accuracy of around 3% of measured values, and of predicting some details of flow features, for example, the wake harmonics.

Abstract:A primary objective of integral methods, such as the momentum integral method, is to discern the physical processes contributing to skin friction. These methods encompass the momentum, kinetic energy and angular momentum integrals. This paper reformulates existing integrals based on the double-averaged Navier–Stokes equations, and extends their application to flows over rough walls. Our derivation yields distinct decompositions for the bottom-wall viscous friction coefficient, denoted as , and the roughness element drag coefficient . The decompositions comprise three terms: a viscous term, a turbulent term and a roughness (dispersive) term – regardless of the flow configuration, be it channel or boundary layer. Notably, when these integrals are evaluated for laminar flow scenarios, only the viscous term remains significant. In addition, we elucidate the spatial distributions of the terms within these decompositions. To demonstrate the practicality of our formulations, we apply them to analyse data from direct numerical simulations of turbulent half-channel flows. These flows feature aligned and staggered cubical roughness at various packing densities. Our analyses, based on kinetic-energy-oriented decompositions, reveal that when the surface coverage density is small, the dominant terms within the decompositions are the viscous and turbulent terms. With increasing , the viscous dissipation term decreases, while the turbulent production term increases and then decreases. These variations arise from a subdued near-wall cycle and the development of a shear layer at the height of the cubes.

Abstract:A boundary element method for potential flow problem coupled with the dynamics of rigid body was developed to determine numerically the resultant force and moment of force acting on an arbitrarily three-dimensional solid body and its motion in a current of an infinite fluid. An accurate integration method for singular integrands occurring in the boundary integral equations, a computational method for the tangential gradient of a velocity potential on a surface, and a method to properly treat the singularities appearing in the system of the dynamic equations of a rigid body, were proposed to complete the numerical solution of the problem. Several numerical examples were given to show the validity of the method.

Abstract:This Letter revisits the problem of the existence of a universal Strouhal number in the separated flow past a stationary bluff body. Physical hypotheses based on flow kinematics only are formulated on the phenomenom. They lead to a simple closed-form mathematical formulation. The model thus developped predicts a universal Strouhal number equal to 1/2π≈0.159 , whichmatches experimental observations. The model has been expanded to predict the Strouhal-Reynolds relationship in the supercritical regime. The formulation has a universal character since said relationship depends on the critical Strouhal and Reynolds numbers only. The circular, square, and triangular cross-section shapes have been used for validation purposes. The case on an accelerating incoming flow has also been considered. The theoretical model thus developed supports the idea, suggested experimentally by other researchers, that time-averaged flow speed during a vortex formation cycle governs vortex dynamics in this accelerating flow case. Abstract:ABSTRACT In this paper, we will combine an upwind radial basis function-finite element with direct velocity–pressure formulation to study the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with free surface flows. We will examine this formulation in an improved mixed-order finite element and localized radial basis function method. A particle tracking method and the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian scheme will then be applied to simulate the two-dimensional high Reynolds free surface flows. An upwind improved finite element formulation based on a localized radial basis function differential quadrature (LRBFDQ) method is used to deal with high Reynolds number convection dominated flows. This study successfully obtained very high Reynolds number free surface flows, up to Re = 500 000. Finally, we will demonstrate and discuss the capability and feasibility of the proposed model by simulating two complex free surface flow problems: (1) a highly nonlinear free oscillation flow and (2) a large amplitude sloshing problem. Using even very coarse grids in all computing scenarios, we have achieved good results in accuracy and efficiency.
