Abstract:Keywords: No potential conflict of interest was reported by the author.1 Mahmud Kemal was one of the sons of Mühürdar (Seal Bearer) Mehmed Emin Pasha, chef-de-cabinet and distant relative of Yusuf Kâmil Pasha (1808 – 1876), an Ottoman minister who served in many high-level posts including that of Grand Vizier between January and June 1863. Apart from Turkish, Yusuf Kâmil Pasha knew Arabic and French well and is remembered in Turkey for having made the first translation of Fénelon's Les aventures de Télémaque, fils d'Ulysse into Turkish. In his earliest work, Mahmud Kemal used the additional prefix Emin Paşazâde (son of Emin Pasha) and styled himself Emin Paşazâde Mahmud Kemal; however, he replaced this prefix after a few years with İbnülemin (son of Emin). He later took the surname İnal (a Turkish equivalent of Emin, meaning 'trustworthy') after the Turkish law related to surnames was passed in 1934, thus resulting in an impressive and sonorous full name. Some sources give the year of his birth as 1871.2 A list of the main published works of İbnülemin Mahmud Kemal İnal is given in several sources (e.g. under the website of the İbnülemin Pious Foundation with the address www.ibnulemin.org and also within the article by Akün (Note 8)). A fairly detailed examination of the published works of İbnülemin may be found in Part 2 of Dursun Gürlek (Note 6 below). Works not treated in the text of the present article are listed below with brief explanatory notes and references; dates of publication have been taken from Akün:Menafiüssavm: a booklet published in Istanbul in 1893, detailing the benefits of fasting during the month of Ramadan and its place in Islam.Ahlâk: a collection of articles published in 1892 in Istanbul which originally appeared in the newspapers Tercümân-ı Hakikat [Interpreter of Truth] and Mürüvvet [Courage]. Ravzatül-Kemal: a collection of articles and essays published in Istanbul in 1892 on the merits and splendour of Eastern and Islamic culture. Hülâsa-i Ziraat: a booklet published in Istanbul in 1891 indicating the advantages and crop yields of modern scientific farming methods.Hülâsa-i Ticaret: a booklet published in Istanbul in 1893 with proposals on the importance of organizing trade for the wellbeing and happiness of the citizens.Bir Yetimin Sergüzesti: the tearful story of the adventures of an orphan, published in instalments between December 1896 and February 1897 in the journal Mütâlâa [Investigation / Examination]. Rahşan: a sad novel which appeared in instalments between August 1897 and March 1898 in the newspaper Asır [Century] about the travails of a girl who is forced by her parents to give up the man she loves and marry a rich suitor. Akün (Note 8) suggests that there may be some echoes here of the failure of İbnülemin's desire to seek the hand of the daughter of the Grand Vizier Said Pasha.Sabih: a novel published in Thessaloniki in 1900 which first appeared in instalments in the newspaper Asır [Century]. It is an historical adventure set in the early eighth century during the time of the 6th Umayyad Caliph Al-Walid.A Master's Thesis by Şemsettin Şeker with the title, İbnülemin Mahmut Kemal İnal'ın Tarihi Romanı: Sabih [A Historical Novel by İbnülemin Mahmut Kemal İnal: Sabih], Marmara University, Istanbul, 2009, 311 pp. treats all aspects of the novel in detail, and includes the text of the novel in the modern Turkish script. Şemsettin Şeker also has a comprehensive article in which he analyses all three novels by İbnülemin, i.e. Bir Yetimin Sergüzeşti, Rahşan and Sabih enumerated above; the reference is Şemsettin Şeker, 'İbnülemin Mahmud Kemâl'ın Romanları Üzerine Bazı Dikkatler' [Some Points to Note in the Novels of İbnülemin Mahmud Kemâl], Türkiyat Mecmuası [Turcology Journal], (Istanbul: Istanbul University, Spring 2012), Vol. 22, pp.19–222.Yetîm-i Alîl: The title translates as The Sick Orphan. This is a short story that was published in Resimli Gazete, Istanbul, No. 64, 1898, pp.764–65.Kemalü'l-İsmet: This is a biographical forty-page study of the historian Fındıklılı İsmet Efendi, which was written by İbnülemin within two days of the death of İsmet Efendi in 1904, but was published only in 1912 in Istanbul at the Cağaloğlu Ruşen Press.Kemalü'l-Hikme: In addition to assembling and publishing the Divan of Hersekli Arif Hikmet, İbnülemin also wrote a biography of the poet, published in Istanbul in 1911 at the Tercüman-ı Hakikat Press.Kâmil Pasa'nin Sadareti ve Konak Meselesi: This pamphlet of thirty-two pages, published in Istanbul in 1912 at the Mahmud Bey Press, deals with the Grand Vizierate period of Yusuf Kâmil Pasha and the Matter of Mansions.
