Abstract:A novel laser feedback interferometry based on high-order feedback is presented and realized for the first time. The interferometer uses a birefringence dual frequency laser and a tilted feedback mirror with high amplitude reflectivity to generate high density cosine-like optical fringes. These optical fringes have nanoscale resolution. Particularly, phase quasi-quadrature between the dual frequency fringes is obtained because of the phase shift caused by the changes of external optical path length. This phase characteristic can be used to distinguish the direction of movement easily. Under typical room conditions, the system's resolution is 0.51nm in 850μm range, and its 2 min displacement accuracy is 5nm.

Abstract:This paper describes the design and realization of a heterodyne laser interferometer system that is applicable to metrology comparison. In this research, an iodine-stabilized Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm served as the light source. Two spatially separated beams with different offset frequencies are generated by two acousto-optic modulators to prevent any source mixing and polarization leakage. The interferometry components are integrated to a monolithic prism to reduce the difficulty of the light path adjustment and to guarantee the measuring accuracy. The experimental results show there is a sub-nanometer periodic nonlinearity, which mainly results from the ghost reflection. Placed in a vacuum chamber, the interferometer is applicable for measuring comparison using a piezo nanopositioner and a precision translation stage. Finally, a commercial interferometer is calibrated with the interferometer system.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-channel dispersive interferometer using femtosecond laser is developed with a reference long optical fiber. The width spectrum of the femtosecond laser is divided into a ranging channel and a monitor channel using a coarse wavelength division multiplexer. The ranging channel uses long fiber to construct an unbalanced interferometer to eliminate measurement dead zone by changing the repetition frequency. The monitor channel can measure the fluctuation of long optical fiber in real-time. The dual-channel interference signal then can be received by one single spectrometer. The optical path drift of the long fiber-based reference path can be synchronously compensated to achieve high-precision ranging. In experiments, a 116 m long optical fiber was compensated to 3 × 10 −8 stability for one hour. Compared with a commercial interferometer, the ranging accuracy is better than ±4 μm within a range of 300 mm.

Abstract:Modern technology development requires interferometry of uttermost quality, which is characterized as high measurement speed, large measurement range, low drift and super-high resolution, good accuracy and efficiency.Firstly this paper introduces a frequency stabilized laser with 5MHz beat frequency which is based on the bi-reflection principle, and a high measurement speed dual-frequency laser interferometer whose allowable displacement velocity is over In's using this kind of laser. Abstract:A high-resolution displacement measurement system based on weak feedback effect of birefringence dual frequency lasers has been presented and demonstrated.The experimental setup of an optical feedback dual-frequency laser is developed by using the phase delay between the optical feedback fringes of the two orthogonally polarized lights to realize displacement division and direction discrimination.A concise theory is given to explain this experimental result.The sub-circuit is mainly composed of the 5-division ASIC,and the FPGA which is used to realize the signal 4-division.A novel displacement apparatus with a resolution of being as high as 15.8 nm,as well as the function of direction discrimination,can meet the demand of high-precision measurement.

Abstract:A real-time processing system for the two-color CO2 laser interferometer on the JT-60SA has been developed for density feedback control. The system has a novel feature that can detect fringe jumps due to off-normal events, such as loss detection due to displacement of the beam axis and changes in the laser wavelengths. Because a phase change due to the JT-60SA plasma is smaller than π/2, corresponding to the line-integral electron density NL of ∼6×1019 m−2 in a short interval of 500 ns, the threshold of the fringe jump detection is decided to be π/2. Hence, off-normal events can be detected from a fringe jump, leading to the abort of the real-time feedback control. In the density feedback control of the JT-60SA plasma, the system is employed as a density monitor, with NL being successfully controlled at 16.8% ± 6.6% lower than the reference.

Abstract:Broadly tunable mid-infrared (IR) lasers, including quantum cascade lasers (QCL), are an asset for vibrational spectroscopy wherein high-intensity, coherent illumination can target specific spectral bands for rapid, direct chemical detection with microscopic localization. These emerging spectrometers are capable of high measurement throughputs with large detector signals from the high-intensity lasers and fast detection speeds as short as a single laser pulse, challenging the decades old benchmarks of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. However, noise in QCL emissions limits the feasible acquisition time for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data. Here, we present an implementation that is broadly compatible with many laser-based spectrometer and microscope designs to address these limitations by leveraging high-speed digitizers and dual detectors to digitally reference each pulse individually. Digitally referenced detection (DRD) is shown to improve measurement sensitivity, with broad spectral indifference, regardless of imbalance due to dissimilarities among system designs or component manufacturers. We incorporated DRD into existing instruments and demonstrated its generalizability: a spectrometer with a 10-fold reduction in spectral noise, a microscope with reduced pixel dwell times to as low as 1 pulse while maintaining SNR normally achieved when operating 8-fold slower, and finally, a spectrometer to measure vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) with a ∼ 4-fold reduction in scan times. The approach not only proves versatile and effective but can also be tailored for specific applications with minimal hardware changes, positioning it as a simple and promising module for spectrometer designs using lasers.

Abstract:A heterodyne detection scheme is combined with a 10.59 μm CO2 laser dispersion interferometer for the first time to allow large bandwidth measurements in the 10-100 MHz range. The approach employed utilizes a 40 MHz acousto-optic cell operating on the frequency doubled CO2 beam which is obtained using a high 2nd harmonic conversion efficiency orientation patterned gallium arsenide crystal. The measured standard deviation of the line integrated electron density equivalent phase resolution obtained with digital phase demodulation technique, is 4 × 1017 m-2. Air flow was found to significantly affect the baseline of the phase signal, which an optical table cover was able to reduce considerably. The heterodyne dispersion interferometer (DI) approach is found to be robustly insensitive to motion, with measured phase shifts below baseline drifts even in the presence of several centimeters of retroreflector induced path length variations. Plasma induced dispersion was simulated with a wedged ZnSe plate and the measured DI phase shifts are consistent with expectations.

Abstract:The measurement of the spectral broadening, or temporal coherence property of very narrow linewidth lasers is not an easy task, while such a measurement is essential in any interferometric applications of the lasers. The beat note between two assumingly identical lasers only provides the convolutional spectral profile of the two lasers, but not characterizes the single laser. The delayed self-heterodyne interferometer (DSHI) would not be effective for kHz linewidth range because the finite delay cannot realize complete de-correlation. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, the complete characterization of the modulus of the degree of coherence (DOC) of kHz linewidth lasers, with a self-referenced fashion where any other reference beam is not used, accordingly, characterize the spectral profile. The method is based on speckle statistical analysis of the Rayleigh scattering in the coherent fiber reflectometry, and would be a novel strong tool to characterize very narrow linewidth lasers.

Abstract:A high-speed high-resolution heterodyne interferometer using a laser with low beat frequency is developed. The interferometer has two spatially separated parallel beams with different frequencies. Two interference signals with opposite Doppler shift are optically generated by the interferometric optics. The measurement electronics uses two identical phasemeters for the two opposite interference signals. The two interference signals are selectively used according to the speed of the target, which makes sure that the Doppler shift of the selected signal is always positive, so that the measurable speed is no longer limited by the beat frequency of the laser source. Experimental results show that the measurement resolution is 0.62 nm. The measurable speed can exceed the restriction determined by the beat frequency. Compared with a commercial interferometer, the displacement difference is less than 40 nm in a travel range of 900 mm.
A High-Resolution Displacement Sensor Based on Multiple Feedback Effect of Birefringence Dual Frequency Lasers

Abstract:A high-resolution displacement sensor based on multiple feedback effect of birefringence dual frequency lasers has been presented and demonstrated. When the system operates in very strong feedback regime with asymmetric feedback induced by incline of an external feedback reflector in an orthogonal polarized dual frequency laser, the modulation frequency of the laser intensity is seven times higher than what the conventional optical feedback system can achieve, due to multiple feedback effect. A fringe shift will correspond to a displacement of a fourteenth wavelength of the external reflector. The intensity transferring periodically between the two frequencies is studied. One period of intensity transfer can be divided into four states: o-light, o-light and e-light, e-light, and no light, and each polarization state corresponds to λ/56 displacement of the external reflector. According to the appearing sequence of the four states, the movement direction of external reflector can be discriminated. Thus, a novel displacement sensor with a resolution of being as high as 11.3 nm, as well as function of direction discrimination, is believed to achieve.
High-precision Absolute Distance Measurement using Dual-Laser Frequency Scanned Interferometry Under Realistic Conditions

Abstract:In this paper, we report on new high-precision absolute distance measurements performed with frequency scanned interferometry using a pair of single-mode optical fibers. Absolute distances were determined by counting the interference fringes produced while scanning the frequencies of the two chopped lasers. High-finesse Fabry-Perot interferometers were used to determine frequency changes during scanning. Dual lasers with oppositely scanning directions, combined with a multi-distance-measurement technique previously reported, were used to cancel drift errors and to suppress vibration effects and interference fringe uncertainties. Under realistic conditions, a precision about 0.2 microns was achieved for a distance of 0.41 meters.

Fiber-Coupled Near-Infrared Laser Heterodyne Interferometer with Fast Optical Scanning

Abstract:A fiber-coupled infrared laser heterodyne interferometer system based on optical scanning is proposed. In this system, the sample is scanned through the combined configuration of a micro-electro-mechanical system mirror and an F-theta lens set. The distortion index of the F-theta lens set is less than 0.01%. In order to enhance the sensitivity of the heterodyne detection system, the dual-balanced heterodyne detection is applied in the measurement of the intermediate frequency signal. The theoretical model and the signal-to-noise ratio expression of the dual-balanced heterodyne detection system are derived in this paper. The interferometer system has a vertical resolution of 0.43 nm and a lateral resolution of 0.95 mu m. The stability of this system is approximately 1.90 nm for 1 h. Furthermore, the system possesses 8 s measurement time, 94.18 MHz output frequency, and 1550 nm eye-safe operating wavelength. Application of the system may be realized for any sample that has higher transmittance for the eye-safe wavelength. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America
Synthetic-wavelength Based Absolute Distance Measurement Using Hetero Dyne Interferometry of a Femtosecond Laser

Abstract:Large-scale and high precision absolute distance measurement is essential in aerospace technology and advanced manufacturing. Traditional method of measuring distance cannot meet this requirement. Since the advent of optical frequency comb, it has brought a revolutionary breakthrough to absolute distance measurement. In the past decade, there were proposed many methods to measure long absolute distances with high accuracy. Especially, the simple method of using adjacent pulse-to-pulse distance as a ruler for distance measurement has been widely used. The accuracy of this method depends mainly on the knowledge of relative positions of the two overlapped pulses, i.e., pulse-to-pulse alignment. In our previous study, we have proposed a heterodyne interferometer based on synthetic wavelength method with femtosecond laser. The synthetic wavelength is derived from the virtual second harmonic and the real second harmonic, and the real second harmonic is produced by a piece of periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) crystal. However, the second harmonic generation system makes the system complicated, and causes a great optical energy loss. In order to solve this problem, we generate the synthetic wavelength by two spatial band-pass filters in our present study, which can simplify the system greatly. Moreover, we can reduce the optical energy loss and tune the synthetic wavelength by controlling the angle of the filter. The synthetic wavelength used in the present system is 71.39 μm. The interferometricphase of the synthetic wavelength is used as a mark for the pulse-to-pulse alignment. In order to reduce the influences of air disturbance and temperature variation, we set up a thermal-insulated cover for the interferometer to stabilize the environment in the system. By using this cover, the optical path length difference of the system in 450 s can be reduced from 8.56 μm to 0.21 μm. To demonstrate the e?cacy of the method described above, the target mirror is moved by eight steps in steps of 5 mm. We compare the measurement results with those obtained by a commercial interferometer, and the residual error is less than 100 nm. Since the measurement range is larger than our previous study, the relative accuracy is better than the previous system. In conclusion, we demonstrate a synthetic-wavelength based absolute distance measurement by using heterodyne interferometry of a femtosecond laser. Two spatial band-pass filters are used to generate the synthetic wavelength, which can simplify the system. The comparison results show that the system has an accuracy better than 100 nm in a displacement of 40 mm. The accuracy of the experimental system can be further improved by making the common-path of the two interferometers longer, locking the fceo to the atomic clock and sampling the data synchronously.

Abstract:A high accuracy and real-time amplitude-phase demodulation method based on the pulse counting of optical fringes is proposed for a laser interferometer to realize vibration measurement in primary vibration calibration system. The two orthogonally analog signals with high frequency are converted into two digital signals through the comparison module instead of a high-speed data acquisition device. Then one displacement increment during a quarter period of the digital signal can be obtained by the high-frequency clock through comparing the four states of two orthogonally digital signals. The output rate of the displacement value can be adjusted by sub -sample according to the vibration frequency. The experimental results from the proposed method get a good consistence with that from the traditional sine approximation method in the primary vibration calibration, not only for homodyne interferometer but also for heterodyne interferometer. The proposed method involves less complicated hardware equipment and algorithm, so it is sufficient for real-time and high-precision demodulation of the laser interference signals to realize vibration measurements in primary vibration calibration.
On-the-fly precision spectroscopy with a dual-modulated tunable diode laser and Hz-level referencing to a cavity

Abstract:Advances in high-resolution laser spectroscopy have enabled many scientific breakthroughs in physics, chemistry, biology and astronomy. Optical frequency combs have pushed measurement limits with ultrahigh-frequency accuracy and fast-measurement speed while tunable diode laser spectroscopy is used in scenarios that require high power and continuous spectral coverage. Despite these advantages of tunable diode laser spectroscopy, it is challenging to precisely determine the instantaneous frequency of the laser because of fluctuations in the scan speed. Here we demonstrate a simple spectroscopy scheme with a frequency modulated diode laser that references the diode laser on-the-fly to a fiber cavity with sub-15 Hz frequency precision over an 11-THz range at a measurement speed of 1 THz/s. This is an improvement of more than two orders of magnitude compared to existing diode laser spectroscopy methods. Our scheme provides precise frequency calibration markers while simultaneously tracking the instantaneous scan speed of the laser. We demonstrate several applications, including dispersion measurement of an ultra-high-Q microresonator and spectroscopy of an HF gas cell, which can be used for absolute frequency referencing of the tunable diode laser. The simplicity, robustness and low costs of this spectroscopy scheme could prove extremely valuable for out-of-the-lab applications like LIDAR, gas spectroscopy and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometry is a traceable high-resolution method for displacement metrology that has no nonlinearity. Compared with the single resonance tracking F-P interferometry, the dual resonance tracking (DRT) F-P interferometer system is able to realize tens of millimeters measurement range while maintaining the intrinsic high resolution. A DRT F-P system is thus developed for absolute displacement measurement in metrology applications. Two external cavity diode lasers (ECDLs) are simultaneously locked to two resonances of a high-finesse F-P cavity using the Pound-Drever-Hall locking scheme. The absolute optical frequencies of the locked ECDLs are measured using a reference diode laser, with the frequency stabilized and controlled by an optical frequency comb. The absolute cavity resonance order numbers are investigated. The measurement range is experimentally tested to achieve 20 mm, while the resolution reaches ~10 pm level, mainly limited by the mechanical stability of the F-P cavity. Compared with the measurement results from a self-developed displacement-angle heterodyne interferometer, the displacement residuals are within 10 nm in the range of 20 mm. This high-resolution interferometer may become a candidate for length metrology such as in Watt balance or Joule balance projects.

Abstract:In the present article, we propose a monolithically integrated Michelson interferometer using a λ = 4 μm InGaAs/InAlAs quantum cascade laser as the light source. By using simple fringe detection and a four-point interpolation on each fringe, we will be able to detect minimal object displacements of 500 nm—corresponding to 25% of half the laser emission wavelength. Such an interferometric photonic integrated circuit has interesting applications for precision computerized numerical controlled machines. Since the industrial standard of such machines currently consists of glass-based linear encoders with a resolution of 5 μm, our interferometer-based system will enable an improvement of at least one order of magnitude.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an instantaneous-wavelength-variation monitoring system for the wavelengthswept distributed feedback (DFB) laser, which consists of the wavelength-swept DFB laser, an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), a 3-port optical circulator and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The unbalanced MZI contains two arms with different delay lengths to generate a beat signal when the DFB laser sweeps its wavelength. An acoustic optic modulator (AOM) is added to the delay arm to introduce an extra frequency shift to increase the beat signal. So the tuning direction of the DFB's wavelength can be recognized via the change of the beat frequency. In-phase/Quadrature (IQ) demodulation algorithm is selected as the optimized method to demodulate the change of wavelength, and the FBG acts as a reference to confirm the absolute wavelength during wavelength tuning. In the experiment, the wavelength-tuning direction can be accurately determined when the laser wavelength sweeps by 1.6 nm within 30 ms. Furthermore, this rapid and precise wavelength-tuning monitoring system can be used to enhance the performance of the FBG interrogator to achieve real-time and accurate temperature and strain sensing in the future.

Abstract:A Dammann grating interferometer using transverse Zeeman laser as light resource is developed in this paper. It takes advantages of reducing the effect of thermal expansion. Drift of the air refraction index can be easily conquered due to equivalent beam length. It is an attractive configuration with resolution of 0.7 nm. The error caused by the depolarization effect of the grating is analyzed. Calibration experiment between this grating interferometer and a differential dual-frequency interferometer has been implemented. The experimental results show that the equal divisions of the grating pitch by 8 times via optical system and the nonlinearity error is no more than 25 nm when the grating pitch equals 20 μm.
