Abstract:Molecular dynamics calculations were performed to simulate the dynamics of an impurity jump process by means of a vacancy mechanism in an fcc lattice. The system, interacting by Lennard-Jones (12-6) potentials, consisted of 254 lattice atoms, one impurity atom, and one vacancy (T=60 K). The temporal and spatial behavior of the impurity and the nearest neighbors of the split vacancies is analyzed, and discussed in terms of several position-dependent quantities. On its way from the saddle-point to the vacant site the impurity exhibits a ballistic behavior with a time of flight of 1.5×10−12 s. In comparison, the relaxation process of the four gate atoms is considerably longer, 2.5×10−12 s, and is superimposed on their vibrational motion. The other nearest neighbors of the split vacancies are not directly affected by the jumping impurity, but their motion is strongly correlated with that of nearest-neighbor gate atoms.
