Abstract:A fine-grained aggregate of identical cubic blocks, each of which consists of sixty-four differently oriented crystals of cubic shape is loaded beyond the elastic limit. Each crystal is assumed to have one slip plane with three equally spaced slip directions. The concept of treating the plastic strain gradient as equivalent body force (similar to Duhamel's analogy of treating temperature gradient as equivalent body force) is applied to calculate stress field due to slip. Heterogeneous slip and stress fields of this aggregate are calculated from single crystal slip properties. The method given satisfies the condition of compatibility and of equilibrium, as well as the single crystal stress-strain relationship throughout the aggregate. From these slip and stress fields, the yield surfaces under combined tension and torsion loadings are calculated. The initial yield surface of this aggregate giving infinitesimal plastic strain is very close to Tresca theory, while the surface in stress space giving a finite initial measurable plastic strain agrees well with von Mises. This explains why the observed experimental initial yield surfaces agree better with the von Mises rather than the Tresca plasticity theory. The yield surface of this aggregate loaded in tension to about 70 per cent beyond the elastic limit was calculated and is found to have a vertex at the loading point.
