Abstract:The slinky, released from rest hanging under its own weight, falls in a peculiar manner. The bottom stays at rest until a wave hits it from above. Two cases -- one unphysical one where the slinky is able to pass through itself, and the other where the coils of the slinky collide creating a shock wave travelling down the slinky -- are analysed. In the former case, the bottom begins to move much later than in the latter.

Abstract:Slinkys that start from a stretched equilibrium position supported at the top and then released to fall under the influence of gravity exhibit the interesting behavior that the bottom of the slinky does not move until the collapsing top of the Slinky reaches the bottom. In this paper, we examine this problem using numerical methods to investigate whether this property holds for generalizations of the slinky physics such as changing the restoring force from the traditional Hookes law or considering random and non-uniform distributions of masses.

Modeling a falling slinky

Abstract:A slinky is an example of a tension spring: in an unstretched state a slinky is collapsed, with turns touching, and a finite tension is required to separate the turns from this state. If a slinky is suspended from its top and stretched under gravity and then released, the bottom of the slinky does not begin to fall until the top section of the slinky, which collapses turn by turn from the top, collides with the bottom. The total collapse time t_c (typically ~0.3 s for real slinkies) corresponds to the time required for a wave front to propagate down the slinky to communicate the release of the top end. We present a modification to an existing model for a falling tension spring (Calkin 1993) and apply it to data from filmed drops of two real slinkies. The modification of the model is the inclusion of a finite time for collapse of the turns of the slinky behind the collapse front propagating down the slinky during the fall. The new finite-collapse time model achieves a good qualitative fit to the observed positions of the top of the real slinkies during the measured drops. The spring constant k for each slinky is taken to be a free parameter in the model. The best-fit model values for k for each slinky are approximately consistent with values obtained from measured periods of oscillation of the slinkies.

Abstract:If you release a slinky hung in midair from its initial stationary position, you can observe something interesting: the bottom of the slinky is at rest in midair for a while. Among physicists, this phenomenon is well known and has been discussed from the physical point of view. In this paper we deal with the problem of a freely falling slinky from the purely mathematical point of view. Through the rigorous mathematical process we obtained an explicit formula which describes the motion of the freely falling slinky and it turns out that this is a solution to an inhomogeneous wave equation. Our work gives the mathematical justification of the results obtained by physicists.

Abstract:A Slinky is a loose helical coil spring and is a well-known educational toy. In this paper a model for a Slinky is presented. The Slinky is represented as a sequence of rigid half coils connected by torsional springs. A range of Slinky configurations in static equilibrium are calculated. Where possible the torsion spring model is compared with the much simpler point mass model of a Slinky, and a more sophisticated model that includes axial and shear deformation. The torsional spring model is shown for the most part to produce similar qualitative behaviour as the more complex model. The simplicity of the torsional spring model makes it a candidate for a discrete stair walking dynamic model of a Slinky, The point mass model is straightforward to derive and solve and makes it possible for an undergraduate engineering student in the early part of their degree course to understand. The torsional spring model is a useful tool for showing what can be done in a more advanced mechanics course to model a system that most students would have previous experience of.

Abstract:International Journal of Mechanical Engineering Education, Ahead of Print. The Lagrange method is applied to two dynamic models of a Slinky, one based on point masses and linear springs and a second where the Slinky is represented as a sequence of half hoops connected by torsion springs. For the first time, the use of Lagrange's method applied to a Slinky has produced a multi-body dynamic model that can potentially with minor modification reproduce all the interesting behaviour Slinkies are well known for; descending stairs, pseudo levitation, transmission of longitudinal and transverse waves. In this paper, the models are derived and a limited exploration of the two dynamic models' behaviour is considered. For unforced oscillation, the point mass model and torsion spring model produce a similar amplitude and frequency. When considering forced oscillations, the point mass model has a very different spectrum of natural frequencies than the torsion spring model. The torsion spring model is considered for different forcing conditions.

Abstract:This paper discusses the oscillations of a spring (slinky) under its own weight. A discrete model, describing the slinky by $N$ springs and $N$ masses, is introduced and compared to a continuous treatment. One interesting result is that the upper part of the slinky performs a triangular oscillation whereas the bottom part performs an almost harmonic oscillation if the slinky starts with "natural" initial conditions, where the spring is just pulled further down from its rest position under gravity and then released. It is also shown that the period of the oscillation is simply given by $T=\sqrt{32 L/g}$, where $L$ is the length of the slinky under its own weight and $g$ the acceleration of gravity independent of the other properties of the spring.

Abstract:We discuss the gravitational and the elastic potential energy of a Slinky suspended in a U-shape due to its own weight. If one symmetrically moves both ends of the Slinky along a particular parabola, or if one moves one end along a particular circle by fixing the other end, the total potential energy of the Slinky can be constant. External forces exchange these potential energies with each other without doing any net work. We present theoretical discussions and experiments suitable for physics classes in universities.

Abstract:The Slinky is a well-known example of a highly flexible helical spring, exhibiting large, geometrically nonlinear deformations from minimal applied forces. By considering it as a system of coils that act to resist axial, shearing, and rotational deformations, we develop a discretized model to predict the equilibrium configurations of a Slinky via the minimization of its potential energy. Careful consideration of the contact between coils enables this procedure to accurately describe the shape and stability of the Slinky under different modes of deformation. In addition, we provide simple geometric and material relations that describe a scaling of the general behavior of flexible, helical springs.

Abstract:We discuss the effect of the natural length of a Slinky on its form suspended in a U-shape. For a typical Slinky, the natural length L is small compared to the elongation due to its weight. It is known that the form of the Slinky is described by a quadratic function when L = 0. In this article, we will find the deviation from the quadratic function up to the first order of L when L ≠ 0. We show that our result is better fitted to the shape of an actual Slinky than the quadratic function by a simple experiment. The theoretical and experimental subjects of our study will be suitable for physics students in universities.

Abstract:Neste artigo, analisamos o movimento de uma mola Slinky em queda, a partir do repouso, inicialmente suspensa em uma de suas extremidades. É bem conhecido que, nessas condições, a Slinky se move de forma inusitada: sua extremidade inferior fica em repouso até a chegada da extremidade superior – como se a gravidade estivesse sendo desafiada! Fizemos uma revisão da literatura, e identificamos que a explicação mais amplamente divulgada para esse fenômeno de levitação aparente da base da Slinky em queda faz uso do conceito de informação (e parece não agradar a muitos). Mostramos que tal fenômeno pode ser explicado – e reproduzido através de uma simulação computacional, com um modelo simples – sem a ideia de que “leva um tempo para a informação de que a Slinky foi solta, em sua extremidade superior, chegar à extremidade inferior”.
The Motion Of A Spring Released From Uniform Circular Motion

Abstract:A weak spring is connected at one end to a rotor turning at constant angular velocity. The spring extends to a stretched length as determined by the spring mass, rest length, spring constant, rotor radius and rotor angular velocity. When released from the rotor, the inner end of the spring pulls away as expected, causing a wave to travel down the spring as it collapses. During this time interval, the outer end of the spring continues to move along its original circular path in uniform circular motion, as if the spring were still connected to the rotor. This is analogous to the effect of a hanging Slinky released from rest whose bottom end remains at a fixed position above the ground until a wave from the top of the Slinky reaches the bottom of the Slinky. Values from a numerical model and measurements from video analysis show that upon release the inner end travels along a circle of similar radius as the outer end. The effect appears as a series of alternating semi-circles. In addition, the simulation and data agree that (1) the spring extension and drag angle increase with the angular velocity of the rotor; (2) the droop angle decreases with angular velocity of the rotor; (3) the collapse time and bend angle of the collapsing spring are independent of the angular velocity.

Abstract:In this study we experimentally show that a stretched rainbow spring under gravity or extra weight may exhibit unconventional fall motion. Specially, when the rainbow spring is released from a high place, its lower end remains stationary until the spring wires stack together and then all the parts of the rainbow spring falls down together. We utilize a high-speed camera to record the fall process of one plastic and one metal rainbow spring under different loading conditions to systematically investigate this unconventional physical phenomenon. We use the time of the elastic wave propagating the length of the spring to predict the duration of the lower end of the rainbow spring remaining still. The findings from this study elucidate this physical phenomenon which has potential for the areas requiring temporary absolute space positioning.

Abstract:In this paper we study the global dynamics of the inverted spherical pendulum with a vertically vibrating suspension point in the presence of an external horizontal periodic force field. We do not assume that this force field is weak or rapidly oscillating. We prove that there always exists a non-falling periodic solution, i.e., there exists an initial condition such that the rod of the pendulum never becomes horizontal along the corresponding solution. We also show numerically that there exists an asymptotically stable non-falling solution for a wide range of parameters of the system.

Abstract:A freely falling chain from a cup at certain height can jump. The process can be divided into two parts: a stable suspension and an accelerating procedure. Variational principle and force analysis demonstrate that the shape of stable suspension is an inverted catenary. The requirement of the jumping and the parameters to describe the jumping catenary have been studied in detail, and experiments have been conducted to verify the theoretical analysis. The physical picture of the falling chain could be useful in certain falling systems, providing valuable insight into the dynamical system.

Abstract:A helical spring is one of the fundamental mechanical elements commonly used throughout human history, whose deformation characteristic is well described by Hooke's law. Based on in silico studies, this work reported a novel structural transition from a homogeneous morphology to an inhomogeneous configuration in the normal helical nanospring (NS) for the first time, which provides rigorous proof for the "breakdown of Hooke's law" at the nanoscale. Theoretical analyses and numerical results show that the transition is expected to occur in a wide range of two-dimensional (2D) material based normal helical NSs, and the driving mechanism is the interlayer van der Waals (vdW) interactions. A series spring model is established to describe this transition phenomenon by considering the elastic deformation energy and interlayer interactions, which explicitly illustrates the competition between the surface energy and the elastic constant in controlling such a structural transition. It is expected that the structural transition is strictly limited to the nanoscale system, where the interlayer interactions exert significant influence on its mechanical properties. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the non-Hookean behavior of NSs, and sheds light on their applications in micro- and nanomachines or mechanical systems, such as nanoelectromechanical systems, nanorobots or soft machines.

Abstract:In the present article the linear mass Density for vertically suspended heavy springs is calculated for two different cases. First for a spring of invariable length suspended at the top and fixed at the bottom of the spring, then for a hanging heavy spring with an additional load. Both cases are solved by minimizing the total energy which is a sum of potential energy and energy due to the deformation.
