Abstract:Organizational culture is created gradually by founder leaders on the basis of their values, assumptions and beliefs. Organizational culture is tangible in terms of the architecture of the company, office layout and exhibits and intangible in terms of behaviour of employees, decisions, policies and procedures. This article aims to perform a comparative analysis of some of the founder leaders of Indian and American businesses and their influence on the culture of the organization. The study adopts the case method research design where the focus is on the specific interesting cases, articles and interviews of the founder(s) in their formational years and cases when the company had a stable organizational culture. The unit of analysis is the founder leader. The company’s culture is evaluated using Schein’s Model of Organizational Culture while that of the founder leader is evaluated using Hofstede’s model of cultural dimensions. This study does not equate national culture to individual’s culture to avoid ecological fallacy of interpreting country-level relationships being applied to individuals. The study shows that there exist layers of subcultures in each individual. The article discusses an interesting paradigm, that is, the culture in which they are born/trained and the culture they adopt intentionally. When founders adopt other cultures, some traces of adopted cultures are reflected in the organization. The article concludes that founder leaders’ culture needs a better framework in order to see its effects on the organization. Hofstede’s model does not show the relationship between different layers of the culture. Hence, the model seems inadequate to be applied to analyse founder leaders.

Abstract:This paper explores the connection between founder personality and organizational culture in founder-led entrepreneurial companies. It draws from the literature in upper echelon/top management teams, family business and organizational psychology – notably the Attraction-Selection-Attrition (ASA: Schneider, 1987) and Person-Organization fit (P-O: O'Reilly, Chatman, & Caldwell, 1991) theories. Using ethnographic, psychological and organizational data from the founders and employees of four small firms from multiple industries, we find that, contrary to ASA and P-O predictions, aggregate personality seems to mediate the effect of founder personality on culture. At the same time, the direct impact of founder personality seems to be enhanced by intentional efforts to build culture and by sheer force of personality. The paper concludes with plans for further research into the personality-organizational culture effects and thoughts about the applicability of these results for founders.

Abstract:Weber’s (1946) model of charismatic leadership offers a framework within which more recent theories and findings can be shown to have a place. The process he described begins as a challenge to an existing status quo and paves the way for another. The charismatic leader elicits a willing response from followers, who begin in the faith that they are pursuing purposes greater than their own but lay the foundations of a new status quo when they seek to legitimate their positions of power. Empirical theories and findings elucidate the stages of this process. The initial status quo, leader dependence upon the support of followers, attributions of charisma and the importance of follower feelings have been described under the headings of substitutes for leadership, leader traits and behavior, implicit leadership and transformational leadership. Leader-member exchange (LMX) and strategic contingencies theory describes the appearance of an administrative staff and tendencies toward a new status quo. Descriptions of organizational development bear similarities to Weber’s model and suggest opportunities for empirical research.

Abstract:In searching for the sources of heterogeneity in organizational cultures, one possibility is that new ventures show a cultural spawning of incorporating elements from the culture of the organization that the founder left (the parent) when starting the new venture. Such a genealogical effect would explain why some organizational cultures remain different, despite the opportunities to learn cultural elements from other organizations. This study investigates whether and under what circumstances such cultural spawning occurs. We argue that cultural spawning occurs, but with varying strength, depending on the founder and the culture of the parent organization. Applying the cultural toolkit perspective, we predict that it is stronger when founders have a longer tenure in the parent organization, the parent culture is more internally coherent, and the parent culture is more atypical, compared with other organizations. These ideas were tested with a sample of U.S. technology startups in Crunchbase. Natural language processing of Glassdoor employee reviews was used to identify the cultural elements of the technology companies. The analysis demonstrates that cultural spawning occurs and reveals previously unexplored contingencies of cultural transmission through congruency and atypicality. Abstract:There has been growing interest in the rhetorical use of history to express organizational identity claims. Yet the evolving role of the founder figure in managerial accounts has not so far received specific attention. In this study, we examine how the founder figure is used to articulate, enact, stretch, preserve or refresh expressions of organizational identity, drawing on an 80-year magazine archive of a financial cooperative. We identify five modes of founder invocation, and show how distance from founding events leads to increasing abstraction in linkages between the founder and organizational identity claims. The paper offers a dynamic perspective on the mobilization of the founder in organizational identity construction as well as an understanding of how and why founders may remain established identity markers long after their demise.

Organizational culture is a system of shared meaning held by members that distinguishes an organization from other organizations. This system of shared meaning is a set of key characteristics that the organization holds in high esteem. Organizational culture is created by the "founder" i.e. people who have already been in the organization, where the culture becomes a tradition, an inherent habit, which is embraced by members of the organization. Culture relates to something of positive value, which is unique which is the character of an organization. Like the pattern of leadership, administrative tidiness, discipline, reward system, authority system, and many other cultures adopted by the organization. Therefore, organizational culture should make a positive contribution to organizational development, especially in improving the performance of an organization and individuals within the organization.

Abstract:How do successive CEOs use myths in an organization over time? While studies start to provide us with understanding of the discourse employed by particular organizational actors, we lack studies about the discourse used by successive strategic actors over long periods of time and the precise mechanisms of such use. To address this gap we theorise the components of mythopoetical behaviour of CEOs and apply critical discourse analysis to unpack the discursive mechanisms used by three CEOs at Hewlett Packard over a 27-year period. We offer two contributions: first, we elaborate on the concept of mythopoetical behaviour (mythopoesis) and show how it forms part of the four discursive mechanisms of authorization, moral evaluation, rationalization and mythopoesis that allow incoming CEOs to construct and legitimise their identity as strategic actors. Second, we develop the notion of mythopoetical distance to provide a method to examine how myths developed by CEOs are compared to the institutionalised myths in their firms.

Abstract:In Short This article presents a model of shared equity leadership that helps transform campus cultures so that students, faculty, staff, and administrators from all backgrounds experience greater inclusion and ameliorates equity gaps. The key to success is the combination of personal- and organizational-level changes that create a critical mass of employees dedicated to the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The findings also showed that each faculty, staff and administrator must first turn inwards and do their own personal work in order to then turn outwards to transform their institutions. Organizational-level changes (such as hiring diverse leaders, revising reward and incentive structures, and expanding accountability systems to include a focus on DEI) were simultaneously enacted as campus change agents worked on their personal journeys.

Abstract:We explore the role of cultural heritage in explaining CEOs overconfidence and its impact on the propensity and performance of corporate acquisitions. CEOs are more prone to overconfidence if the culture in their ancestral country of origin is characterized by strong individualism, independence, long-term orientation, and inequality. We find that the culture-related sources of CEO overconfidence have a significantly negative impact on acquisition performance.

Abstract:Organizational culture plays a crucial role in determining employee performance, especially within the context of start-up companies that face unique and dynamic challenges. This study aims to explore how organizational culture can enhance employee performance in start-ups, as well as the key factors that support the effectiveness of such culture. Through a literature review and empirical analysis, it was found that an inclusive, collaborative, and innovative organizational culture significantly contributes to increased productivity, job satisfaction, and employee loyalty. In start-up companies, where organizational structures are often flatter and work processes more flexible, a culture that encourages openness and adaptation to change becomes critical. Additionally, leadership that can instill core company values and support the development of individuals and teams further strengthens employee engagement with the organization. These factors, when implemented effectively, not only improve individual performance but also drive the overall sustainability and growth of the company. This study concludes that start-ups must consciously build and manage their organizational culture to achieve optimal performance. These findings are expected to serve as a guide for managers and founders of start-up companies in designing effective organizational culture strategies to maximize employee potential and achieve long-term business goals.

Abstract:Design thinking comprises an approach to problem solving that uses tools traditionally utilized by designers of commercial products, processes, and environments (e.g., designing a new car or the layout of a new airport). While design thinking was originally introduced as an approach that would work best when infused into the culture of an organization, most early studies of design thinking focused on identifying the specific tools and methods that might be used to solve management problems. Only recently have researchers examined how the implementation of design thinking might relate to organizational-level constructs, such as organizational culture. In this review, we examine empirical research (mostly from the past decade) that relates the practice of design thinking to the development of culture in organizations. Through this review, we identify how the use of specific design thinking tools supports the development of specific organizational cultures and vice versa. In addition, we identify how using design thinking tools produces emotional experiences and physical artifacts that help users to understand why and how specific cultures support the effective use of specific tools. Together, our review findings suggest that the experiential nature of design thinking tools and cultures (i.e., that they require people to actively engage in hands-on work) allows them to support one another. On the basis of this insight, we develop a general framework for organizing design thinking research and identify a number of avenues for future research that might advance our understanding of design thinking in organizational contexts.

Abstract:This article proposes a theoretical framework for elucidating how organizational culture evolves as an organization goes through its life cycle. This framework reveals that as the organization goes through its life stages of start-up, growth, maturity, and revival, organizational culture evolves through corresponding mechanisms of inspiration, implantation, negotiation, and transformation. This framework contributes to the literature on the dynamic view of culture. Abstract:Abstract We have lived under the hegemony of the reductionistic scientific worldview since Galileo, Newton, and Laplace. In this view, the universe is meaningless, as Stephen Weinberg famously said, and organisms and a court of law are “nothing but” particles in morion. This scientific view is inadequate. Physicists are beginning to abandon reductionism in favor of emergence. Emergence, both epistemological and ontological, embraces the emergence of life and of agency. With agency comes meaning, value, and doing, beyond mere happenings. More organisms are conscious. None of this violates any laws of physics, but it cannot be reduced to physics. Emergence is real, and the tiger chasing the gazelle are real parts of the real universe. We live, therefore, in an emergent universe. This emergence often is entirely unpredictable beforehand, from the evolution of novel functionalities in organisms to the evolution of the economy and human history. We are surrounded on all sides by a creativity that cannot even be prestated. Thus we have the first glimmerings of a new scientific worldview, beyond reductionism. In our universe emergence is real, and there is ceaseless, stunning creativity that has given rise to our biosphere, our humanity, and our history. We are partial co‐creators of this emergent creativity. It is our choice whether we use the God word. I believe it is wise to do so. God can be our shared name for the true creativity in the natural universe. Such a view invites a new sense of the sacred, as those aspects of the creativity in the universe that we deem worthy of holding sacred. We are not logically forced to this view. Yet a global civilization, hopefully persistently diverse and creative, is emerging. I believe we need a shared view of God, a fully natural God, to orient our lives. We need a shared view of the sacred that is open to slow evolution, because rigidity in our view of the sacred violates how our most precious values evolve and invites ethical hegemony. We need a shared global ethic beyond our materialism. I believe a sense of God as the natural, awesome creativity in the universe can help us construct the sacred and a global ethic to help shape the global civilization toward what we choose with the best of our limited wisdom.

Abstract:Based on a three-year inductive field study of first-time founders, we reveal the dynamic identity relationships that tie founders to their ventures: what such relationships comprise, how they evolve over time, and with what strategic implications for the development of new businesses. Specifically, we found that such relationships comprise both identification and construals, which capture the degree to which founders saw their ventures as self-defining and founder-venture psychological distance. Construals, and shifts in construals over time, were critical in explaining how entrepreneurs handled venture-related challenges, as well as how they strategically (re)focused their ventures in terms of scope, whether by diversifying or specializing. By explaining these dynamics, we contribute to research on entrepreneurial identity as well as to construal level theory. In addition, as we distinguish construals from identification, we highlight the importance of construals for understanding identity relationships beyond entrepreneurship. The Role of National Context in the Relationship Between Founder CEO and IPO Performance

Abstract:Although founders are often replaced with external CEOs prior to firms making IPOs, firms that do retain founder CEOs generally perform better at IPO. However, this relationship may be contingent upon context. This study investigates how national context influences the relationship between a founder CEO and IPO long-run performance. We hypothesize that founder-CEOs will perform better in IPO firms in countries where managerial discretion, future orientation, and level of conformity to professionalize management are high, and uncertainty avoidance is low. Using insights from the upper echelon and the institutional theory and utilizing hierarchical linear modeling to analyze over 1,000 firms, we find that founder CEOs perform best in IPO firms in a national context where managerial discretion is low, uncertainty avoidance is high, and level of conformity is high. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:This article endeavors to advance research on the cultural resonance of brands by building bridges between branding scholarship in the consumer psychology tradition and interpretive research regarding brands and their meaning makers. We adopt a cognitivist conceptualization of cultural meaning and focus on the application of interpretive insights to well‐established constructs in the consumer psychology of brands: brand associations, product category associations, social identity, and self‐identity. This integrative exercise highlights the value of cultural models in explaining the processes whereby brands acquire meaning, and suggests several themes that are under‐valued when considering this process problem through a psychological lens: the motivational underpinnings of myths and other cultural meaning models, the relative value of shared cultural and brand meanings versus idiosyncratic meanings, the power and primacy of category‐level meaning making over brand‐level meaning making, the complex processes whereby brands gain and lose legitimacy, and the influence of lay theories about brands and branding on how consumers co‐create meaning for brands.
