Abstract:Mentoring is a popular resource for individual and organizational improvement. In this study we examined for the first time passion in executive mentoring as a potential approach to developing organizational innovativeness. In most previous studies the executives, for example, chief executive officers, were the mentors, but we took the opposite view, namely, the executives were the mentees. Results confirmed the hypotheses that the executive's perception of the mentor's passion was positively related to the executive's perception of organizational innovativeness, through the quality of mentoring and cognitive adaptability. Confirmatory factor analysis and regression analysis confirmed the validity of the results. Results demonstrated the value of passion in executive mentoring and the subsequent link to organizational innovativeness via the quality of mentoring and cognitive adaptability. Theoretical and managerial implications and directions for further research are discussed.

Abstract:Over the past five years, there's been an explosion of interest in purpose-driven leadership. Academics, business experts, and even doctors make the case that purpose is a key to exceptional leadership and the pathway to greater well-being. Despite this growing understanding, however, a big challenge remains. Few leaders have a strong sense of their own individual purpose, the authors' research and experience show, and even fewer can distill their purpose into a concrete statement or have a clear plan for translating purpose into action. As a result, they limit their aspirations and often fail to achieve their most ambitious professional and personal goals. In this article, the authors present a step-by-step framework that leaders can use to identify their purpose and develop an impact plan to achieve concrete results. Effective purpose-to-impact plans use language that is uniquely meaningful to the individual, rather than business jargon. They focus on future, big-picture aspirations and work backward with increasing specificity. And they emphasize the individual's strengths and encourage a holistic view on work and family.

Abstract:This exploratory study delves into the intricacies of transformational leadership within the technology sector, drawing insights from the leadership styles of Steve Jobs of Apple and Jeff Bezos of Amazon. The research aimed to understand how transformational leadership traits influence organizational outcomes like innovation, employee motivation, engagement, and overall performance. To achieve this, the study employed a mixed-method approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. Primary data was gathered using a structured questionnaire, which was administered to a purposively sampled group of 567 respondents, all holding leadership or managerial roles in various industries. The questionnaire design integrated both closed-ended and open-ended questions to facilitate a comprehensive analysis. The data analysis involved rigorous regression analysis to quantitatively assess the relationships between specific transformational leadership traits and organizational outcomes. Key findings revealed a strong positive correlation between the level of inspirational motivation demonstrated by leaders and the degree of organizational innovation. Additionally, significant relationships were observed between the extent of individualized consideration by leaders and employee motivation and engagement, as well as between strategic vision and risk-taking by leaders and key organizational performance metrics. Drawing from these insights, the study recommends cultivating a leadership style that emphasizes inspirational motivation, individualized consideration, and strategic risk-taking. This approach is crucial for fostering innovation, enhancing employee motivation and engagement, and improving overall organizational performance in the rapidly evolving technology sector.

Abstract:Introduction:In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, innovation has become a crucial factor for the success of entrepreneurial ventures in China. However, the mechanisms underlying the promotion of innovation by entrepreneurs are not yet fully understood. Drawing on self-determination theory, this study develops a comprehensive "motivation-behaviors-performance" model to examine the relationship between entrepreneurs' felt responsibility for constructive change and ventures' innovation performance.Methods:Two waves of questionnaire surveys with a sample of 376 entrepreneurs in East China were conducted. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to test the hypotheses.Results:The empirical findings demonstrate that entrepreneurs' felt responsibility for constructive change is a key driver of innovation performance in ventures. Furthermore, external learning, encompassing technological and market learning, serves as a mediator for the positive link between entrepreneurs' felt responsibility and innovation performance. The study also reveals that entrepreneurs' perception of shared vision moderates the relationships between entrepreneurs' felt responsibility and both technological and market learning, such that the relationships are stronger when the perception of shared vision is higher.Discussion:These results yield important contributions to the entrepreneurial psychology research and self-determination theory. The study also has managerial implications for entrepreneurs aiming to enhance ventures' innovation performance.

Abstract:Effective leadership is one of the most important key factors for organization success and long-term development. The purpose of this paper is to provide a new perspective for improving leadership skills through analyzing charismatic leadership. It firstly introduces the concept of charismatic leadership, and then briefly reviews of Jobs and his leadership art in Apple ltd, based on the above, it makes an analysis of key elements of charismatic leadership. The finding of this study reveals that four primary excellence traits which distinguish these leaders from other ordinary ones: excellent eloquences, persistence, perfectionism pursuer and self-confidence. The findings of this study has significant contribution to the body of knowledge in leadership theory, as well as practical implication to the management of a small and medium sized company (SME) especially in the area of organizational leadership influences organizational performance a lot.

Abstract:This article argues that a leader’s narrative and storytelling skills play a critical role in constructing their charismatic identity. In line with Goffman’s (1959) observations, we argue that these skills are effected through ‘stage management’: a segregation between back and front ‘performing regions’ that serves to minimise potential incursions, leaks, disruptions and faux pas that may undermine the leader’s performance. Further, we suggest that Burke’s (1966) observations in relation to the importance of scene setting offer important insights into the impact of leader storytelling and narrative on followers. We revise and extend Gardner and Avolio’s (1998) dramaturgical model of the charismatic relationship in order to reflect these observations, and go on to apply this model to an analysis of three public performances by a case-study leader — Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc. We examine Jobs’ performances as discursive texts, exploring the ways in which he uses them, through stage management, to practice narrative and storytelling and explore how, through these discursive activities, he is able to define himself and his world for his followers. In doing so, we empirically demonstrate and extend the utility of the dramaturgical metaphor to the study of charismatic leadership.

Abstract:Abstract The author is former CEO of 7‐Eleven, Inc., and Blockbuster, Inc., and has been involved at the board level and other key positions in various nonprofits and artistic organizations. He says that in his career, he “grew to appreciate the critical importance of education to the individual, the corporation, and to the humanity at large.” He says that he has tried to “capture ”what′′ learnings were necessary, “how” to make leadership a dynamic learning process, and “why” continued learning is such a fundamental requirement for effective leadership. I have distilled the what, how, and why of my leadership education into 9 principles I call the “C‐Suite Learnings.” The three areas of what to learn are, in his words, change, confidence, and clarity. In how to learn, they are critical thinking, curiosity, and creativity. For why to learn, collaboration, cultural literacy, and character. “My goal,” he concludes, “is to help others find their own path to academic, professional, and even personal success. By practicing these nine Cs, we can Live to Learn; freeing ourselves from personal and societal constraints that limit our success. Only then will we truly Learn to Live; and in turn Learn to Lead.”

Abstract:Steve Jobs is frequently invoked as an example of a ‘visionary’ leader in business. But what is it about his ‘vision’ that was so distinctive? In his famous speech at Stanford University in 2005, he gave a clue – the calligraphy lessons he took at Reed College in 1972. Seemingly devoid of any practical utility at the time, the accumulated skills and enhanced aesthetic sensitivity acquired from exposure to calligraphy were put into use a decade later when creating the first Macintosh computer. Its elegant design would give rise to a full-blown commitment to aesthetics that became the hallmark of Apple. Calligraphy is not merely a way of writing, but a philosophical process articulated through the careful configuration of brush strokes, which combines poetry, literature and painting. That this complex art form would imprint itself on one of the most celebrated narratives of business success is a testament to more than the role of chance in life. It embodies the propensity to reconsider the role of aesthetics in business, and the recognition that, to paraphrase Albert Einstein, the greatest managers are also artists.

Make your company a talent factory

Abstract:Despite the great sums of money companies dedicate to talent management systems, many still struggle to fill key positions - limiting their potential for growth in the process. Virtually all the human resource executives in the authors' 2005 survey of 40 companies around the world said that their pipeline of high-potential employees was insufficient to fill strategic management roles. The survey revealed two primary reasons for this. First, the formal procedures for identifying and developing next-generation leaders have fallen out of sync with what companies need to grow or expand into new markets. To save money, for example, some firms have eliminated positions that would expose high-potential employees to a broad range of problems, thus sacrificing future development opportunities that would far outweigh any initial savings from the job cuts. Second, HR executives often have trouble keeping top leaders' attention on talent issues, despite those leaders' vigorous assertions that obtaining and keeping the best people is a major priority. If passion for that objective doesn't start at the top and infuse the culture, say the authors, talent management can easily deteriorate into the management of bureaucratic routines. Yet there are companies that can face the future with confidence. These firms don't just manage talent, they build talent factories. The authors describe the experiences of two such corporations - consumer products icon Procter & Gamble and financial services giant HSBC Group -that figured out how to develop and retain key employees and fill positions quickly to meet evolving business needs. Though each company approached talent management from a different direction, they both maintained a twin focus on functionality (rigorous talent processes that support strategic and cultural objectives) and vitality (management's emotional commitment, which is reflected in daily actions).

Abstract:In this paper, we conceptualize CEO passion for organizational development (CEO POD) as CEOs' strong inclination to continuously grow and improve their companies, which they find important and fulfilling. We draw from social information processing theory to articulate how and when CEO POD may trickle down to facilitate frontline employees' creativity. Our research encompasses three studies employing different methodologies, including a multilevel, multisource, and multiphase survey and two vignette-based experiments. The results consistently support our model, revealing that CEO POD inspires middle managers to exhibit transformational leadership, which subsequently fosters frontline employees' creativity. Moreover, CEO self-promotion skills augment the indirect effect of CEO POD on employee creativity via middle managers' transformational leadership. Our findings generate valuable theoretical and practical implications to leverage CEO POD to foster employees' creativity in the fast-changing business environment.

This paper demonstrates how a strong organisational brand highlights the role of the CEO and executive team in engaging employees. Several for-profit and nonprofit organisational examples are provided — Blue Cross Blue Shield, Disney, California Dental Association, Lululemon, Rush University Medical Center, Stamford University, Southwest, World Wildlife Fund and Zurich — and concepts are applied to the current stage of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Students will combine the facts presented in the case with their own perceptions and experiences with Apple's products to answer the discussion questions. The case makes valuable contributions related to the historical background of one of the most successful companies in the world and consistently voted the most innovative company. Furthermore, the case examines the psychology of an entrepreneur, Steve Jobs, and takes the student through the entrepreneurial process of starting Apple along with Steve Wozniak. A unique aspect of this case is that Apple products are so ubiquitous that most students will have experienced the technological innovativeness of the company through personal ownership of an iPod, iPhone, or Apple computer product (MAC or laptop). This aspect should make the case both relevant and interesting to students. The following questions are recommended for discussion. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS WITH SUGGESTED ANSWERS 1. Discuss the attributes that contribute to the success of Steve Jobs. Students should draw from facts presented in the case highlighting various attributes that could be argued to be related to his success. Evidence of this may include the following: Passion-- Job's introduction to the world of electronics came during High School with the discovery of electronic hobby kits. He realized that the electric world was not as complicated as it first seemed and that electronics was an interesting field. It quickly became his passion. He began attending lectures conducted by the Hewlett Packard Company (HP) and audited classes at Reed College. This further fueled his appetite for the field and eventually he found summer employment at HP. Jobs (and Wozniak) attended meetings of the Homebrew Computer Club. The club consisted of other electronics enthusiasts who presented news of new innovations in the electronics world and discussed updates of the progressions made by members in creating their own computers. Intelligence and Confidence-- Early on, he found school to be so easy that he was able to skip 5th grade and move directly into Middle School. Later, while working at his job at Atari, some of his fellow workers viewed him as arrogant and overly confident. Although, this was not necessarily an attribute conducive to a collegial work environment, it did provide Jobs the opportunity to work the night shift where it was easier for him to befriend Steve Wozniak who assisted Jobs with the technical aspects of his work. Others described Jobs as "referring to most people as bozos". Although this was a condescending way of viewing his future customers, it did serve to ensure that Apple products were developed in a user-friendly and understandable manner. Resourcefulness-- Atari invited Jobs to develop the circuitry that would transform the popular game, Pong into something more innovative (Breakout), however he was given only four days to complete the task. Realizing that this project was beyond his capabilities, he contacted his friend, Steve Wozniak who helped him accomplish the task. This event, turned out to be the motivation for starting the Apple Computer Company. Visionary and Opportunistic-- Jobs recognized an opportunity to pitch a working model (developed by Wozniak) of a computer that could be viewed on a TV (as opposed to a costly monitor) to HP and Atari. Although neither company chose to invest in the production and marketing, Jobs persuaded Wozniak that this creation was good enough that they should try to produce and market the computer on their own. They raised $1,750 to begin this venture, which turned out to be the start of the Apple Computer Company (Young and Simon, 2005). Abstract:PurposeInnovation has been identified as a critical element to achieve firms' growth. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of chief executive officer (CEO) passion on firm innovation, including exploratory and exploitative innovation and examine the moderating roles of market and technological turbulence.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopts the methodology of survey and uses multisource and time-lagged data of 146 firms in China. Seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) is used to test the hypotheses of this study.FindingsThis study finds that CEO passion promotes exploratory and exploitative innovation. Results also indicate that market turbulence strengthens the effect of CEO passion on exploratory and exploitative innovation, whereas technological turbulence weakens such an effect.Originality/valueCEO passion is an important, positive affect which inspires CEOs to work for firms, but it has not yet received enough attention in the innovation literature. This study contributes to examining the impact of CEO passion on firm innovation and contributes to the contingency under which CEO passion influences firm innovation. Furthermore, this research finds that the moderating effects of market and technological turbulence are different in the relationship between CEO passion and firm innovation.

Abstract:Organizational purpose has flourished in the professional management literature, yet despite increased scholarly interest, academic knowledge and empirical research on the topic remain scarce. Moreover, studies that have been conducted contain important oversights including the lack of a clear conceptualization and misinterpretations that hinder the further development and understanding of organizational purpose. In view of these shortcomings, our interview study aimed to contribute to academic and societal conversations on the contemporary meaning and function of organizational purpose considering the voices and perspectives of 44 global experts. Employing template analysis, we defined organizational purpose as “an organization’s reason for being characterized by significance, aspiration, direction, unification, and motivation.” Moreover, we proposed an explanatory conceptual model, including drivers and outcomes of purpose, important boundary conditions, and explanatory mechanisms. Drawing on self-determination theory, person–organization fit theory, job characteristics theory, and conservation of resources theory, we were able to explain how and under what conditions these concepts are related to organizational purpose. In doing so, our research contributes to advancing the knowledge and understanding of organizational purpose and its effects on human lives within and outside organizations. Our study thereby enhances the understanding of the role of organizations in society and helps in evaluating whether organizations take responsibility by living their purpose in the society they are part of. As such, our study provides important insights for theory development, scale development, and further empirical research on organizational purpose and its effects in different streams such as OB, HRM, marketing, leadership, and strategy.
