Abstract:In this paper, we study an optimal control problem arising in plasma transport which is governed by a singularly perturbed system. Time-scale separation allows us to focus on an uncoupled parabolic PDE with diffusivity-interior-boundary actuation. We prove the existence of the optimal control solution and carry out numerical experiments using quadratic programming (SQP).

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of semidiscrete finite element approximation of time optimal control problem governed by semilinear heat equation with nonsmooth initial data. When the control is acted locally, an error estimate for the optimal time is obtained by making use of the approximation results for the equations. Moreover, with the help of Pontryagin’s maximum principle and the unique continuation property for the heat equation, a better error estimate for the optimal time can be derived when the control is acted globally into the state equation.

Abstract:In the paper we deal with a time optimal control problem for a class of evolutionary equations involving two linear operators and a bilinear operator. Based on the existence and uniqueness of the solution, we establish the existence of optimal controls and several optimality conditions for the time optimal control problem. Finally, the main results are applied to a class of quasistatic frictional contact problems.

Abstract:Optimal control of infinite dimensional systems is one of the central problems in the control of distributed parameter systems. With the development of high performance computers, numerical methods for optimal control design have regained attention and achieved significant progress, mostly in the form of open-loop solutions. We consider in this work an optimal control problem for a bilinear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) system. Based on the optimality conditions derived from Pontryagin's maximum principle for a reduced-order model, and stated as a two-boundary-value problem, we propose an iterative scheme for suboptimal closed-loop control design. In each iteration step, we take advantage of linear synthesis methods to construct a sequence of controllers. The convergence of the controller sequence is proved in appropriate functional spaces. When compared with previous iterative schemes, the proposed scheme avoids repeated numerical computation of the Riccati equation and therefore reduces significantly the number of ODEs that must be solved at each iteration step. A numerical simulation study shows the effectiveness of this new approach.
Analysis and approximation to parabolic optimal control problems with measure-valued controls in time

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an optimal control problem governed by parabolic equations with measure-valued controls over time. We establish the well-posedness of the optimal control problem and derive the first-order optimality condition using Clarke's subgradients, revealing a sparsity structure in time for the optimal control. Consequently, these optimal control problems represent a generalization of impulse control for evolution equations. To discretize the optimal control problem, we employ the space-time finite element method. Here, the state equation is approximated using piecewise linear and continuous finite elements in space, alongside a Petrov-Galerkin method utilizing piecewise constant trial functions and piecewise linear and continuous test functions in time. The control variable is discretized using the variational discretization concept. For error estimation, we initially derive a priori error estimates and stabilities for the finite element discretizations of the state and adjoint equations. Subsequently, we establish weak-* convergence for the control under the norm $\mathcal{M}(\bar I_c;L^2(\omega))$, with a convergence order of $O(h^\frac{1}{2}+\tau^\frac{1}{4})$ for the state.

Abstract:An optimal control problem is investigated for an abstract semilinear differential equation of the first order in time in a Hilbert space with an unbounded operator and control involved linearly in the right-hand side. The cost functional is assumed to be additively separated with respect to state and control, with a rather general dependence on the state. For this problem, the existence of an optimal control is proved and the properties of the set of optimal controls are established. The author's previous results on the total preservation of unique global solvability (totally global solvability) and on solution estimation for such equations are developed in the context of the nonlinearity of the equation under study. The indicated estimate is found important for the present study. A nonlinear heat equation and a nonlinear wave equation are considered as examples.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of exact controllability of linear control systems with compact semigroup in non-reflexive state spaces and control spaces. The weak convergence of bounded sequence of control functions with respect to the subspace of the dual space is studied and a lemma for the weak convergence is proved. Based on the lemma and the strong separation theorem, a necessary and sufficient condition for exact controllability of compact semigroups with respect to the space consisting all essentially bounded measurable functions is obtained. An example of heat equation is presented to illustrate the utility of the result. Some related problems remaining for further study are addressed.

Abstract:We study optimal control problems that are governed by semilinear elliptic partial differential equations that involve non-Lipschitzian nonlinearities. It is shown that, for a certain class of such PDEs, the solution map is Fréchet differentiable even though the differential operator contains a nondifferentiable term. We exploit this effect to establish first-order necessary optimality conditions for minimizers of the considered control problems. The resulting KKT-conditions take the form of coupled PDE-systems that are posed in non-Muckenhoupt weighted Sobolev spaces and raise interesting questions regarding the regularity of optimal controls, the derivation of second-order optimality conditions, and the analysis of finite element discretizations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study time optimal control problems for heat equations on $\Omega\times \mathbb{R}^+$. Two properties under consideration are the existence and the bang-bang properties of time optimal controls. It is proved that those two properties hold when controls are imposed on some proper subsets of $\Omega$; while they do not stand when controls are active on the whole $\Omega$. Besides, a new property for eigenfunctions of $-\Delta$ with Dirichlet boundary condition is revealed.

Abstract:In this paper, we study two subjects on internally controlled heat equations with time varying potentials: the attainable subspaces and the bang-bang property for some time optimal control problems. We present some equivalent characterizations on the attainable subspaces and provide a sufficient condition to ensure the bang-bang property. Both the above-mentioned characterizations and the sufficient condition are closely related to some function spaces consisting of some solutions to the adjoint equations. It seems for us that the existing ways to derive the bang-bang property for heat equations with time-invariant potentials (see, for instance, [H. O. Fattorini, Infinite Dimensional Linear Control Systems: The Time Optimal and Norm Optimal Problems, Elsevier, Amsterdam 2005], [F. Gozzi and P. Loreti, SIAM J. Control Optim., 37 (1999), pp. 1195-1221], [V. Mizel and T. Seidman, SIAM J. Control Optim., 35 (1997), pp. 1204-1216], and [G. Wang, SIAM J. Control Optim., 47 (2008), pp. 1701-1720]) do not work for the case where the potentials are time varying. We provide another way to approach it in the current paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we present some properties of time optimal controls for linear ODEs with the ball-type control constraint. More precisely, for an optimal control, we build up an upper bound for the number of its switching points; show that it jumps from one direction to the reverse direction at each switching point; give its dynamic behaviour between two consecutive switching points; and study its switching directions.

We first prove the well-posedness and regularity of the optimal control problem. Furthermore, we discuss the fully discrete scheme and analyze its stability and a priori error estimate. Abstract:We focus on optimal control problems governed by elliptic, quasilinear PDEs. Though there are various examples of such problems in the literature, we make an attempt at describing some general principles by dealing with three basic situations. In the first one, we assume that the state equation is variational; the second one focuses on a non-variational, monotone operator as state equation; finally, we add a non-linear term off the divergence part of the equation. In the first two cases, existence of optimal solutions can be established under suitable sets of assumptions, while relaxation is required for the third situation. Concerning the cost functional, and though more general examples can be dealt with, we will take a typical case consisting of two terms: one depending on the state, and another one of the form of a typical Thychonov regularization.

Abstract:We consider optimal control of fractional in time (subdiffusive, i.e., for $% 0<\gamma <1$) semilinear parabolic PDEs associated with various notions of diffusion operators in an unifying fashion. Under general assumptions on the nonlinearity we{~\textsf{first show}} the existence and regularity of solutions to the forward and the associated {\textsf{backward (adjoint)}} problems. In the second part, we prove existence of optimal {\textsf{controls% }} and characterize the associated {\textsf{first order}} optimality conditions. Several examples involving fractional in time (and some fractional in space diffusion) equations are described in detail. The most challenging obstacle we overcome is the failure of the\ semigroup property for the semilinear problem in any scaling of (frequency-domain) Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:A parallel-in-time method for the optimal control problem governed by linear parabolic equations is analyzed. The corresponding optimal system consists of a state equation (forward in time) and an adjoint equation (backward in time) which are coupled by the necessary condition. The whole time interval is divided into non-overlapping subdomains which are associated by the Robin-type transmission conditions. We apply discontinuous Galerkin method for time discretization in each subdomain and keep continuous in space. In order to prove the convergence of the algorithm, the semi-discretization errors at initial and final points are obtained based on nodal stability estimates. We complete the convergence analysis for iterative solution of the nonoverlapping Schwarz method through energy estimates for two subdomains and present the convergence rate affected by the transmission parameters. Finally, numerical experiments verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:A class of optimal control problems of hybrid nature governed by semilinear parabolic equations is considered. These problems involve the optimization of switching times at which the dynamics, the integral cost, and the bounds on the control may change. First- and second-order optimality conditions are derived. The analysis is based on a reformulation involving a judiciously chosen transformation of the time domains. For autonomous systems and time-independent integral cost, we prove that the Hamiltonian is constant in time when evaluated along the optimal controls and trajectories. A numerical example is provided.

Abstract:This paper gives an existence result for solutions to an elliptic optimal control problem based on a general fractional kernel, where the admissible controls come from a class satisfying both a growth bound and a superlinear-subcritical condition. Each admissible control is known to produce a nontrivial corresponding state by applying the Mountain Pass Theorem to fractional equations. The main theoretical contribution is the construction of a suitable set of admissible controls on which the the standard existence theory for control problems with linear and semi-linear state constraints can be adapted. Extra care is taken to explain what new difficulties arise for these types of control problems, to justify the limitations of this theory. For completeness, the corresponding local elliptic control problem is also studied.
